AP News, I'm Ben Thomas. On the first night at the Republican National Convention, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina spoke of the assassination attempt against Donald Trump. "On Saturday, the devil came to Pennsylvania holding a rifle. But an American lion got back up on his feet and he roared!" The delegates formally nominated Trump at their 2024 presidential candidate shortly after he announced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance's running mate, Mick Canard, has more on him. Vance was first elected to the Senate in 2022 after receiving an endorsement from Trump in a contested Republican primary. Vance, who pinned his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, about life in Appalachia, once described himself as a "never-trumper." But when he was running for Senate, Vance said he regretted those comments and was a supporter of Trump. Throughout this year's campaign, Vance has appeared on the trail with Trump and in support of him at various events across the country. He also traveled to New York City during Trump's Hush Money trial, where Vance spoke out vehemently against the charges that prosecutors were pursuing. In an interview with NBC News's Lester Holt, President Biden addressed his comment that he wanted to put a bullseye on Donald Trump. "I didn't say crosshairs, I have a bullseye, I have a bullseye, I have a focus on him. Focus on what he's doing, focus on one as far as policies, focus on the number of lies he told him to be, there's a whole range of things that, look, I'm not the guy that said I want to be a dictator on day one." Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Secret Service Protection for the candidates. "Adjustments have been made to the former president's detail, to the current president's detail as well as to the vice president's detail." Protection's also being extended to independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., while a long shot in his events have drawn large crowds. This is AP News. A massive pipe organ originally used in a Detroit theater for silent movies nearly a century ago is getting new life at a theater at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Archie Zarletta has the story. That is the organ known as the Barton Opus when it was last played in 1959, shortly before Detroit's Hollywood theater closed for good. The organ was built in 1927, stood nearly two stories tall, and could play not just organ sounds, but strings, flutes, tuba, steamboats, and bird whistles. It also contained real xylophone, cymbals, and drums. The organ was sold at auction in the 1960s, then stored in thousands of pieces for four decades. Professional organist Stephen Ball has donated it to the Rochester Institute of Technology, which has finished about two-thirds of the organ's restoration. The school has built a theater specially to house the organ. It will open in January 2026. I'm Archie Zarletta. And I'm Ben Thomas, AP News. Thanks for listening. An official message from Medicare.
