Be Kind, not Nice | 5 Minute Friday

Nuances matter. Today, Eddie focuses on a specific language nuance and encourages us to be kind, not nice.

In explaining the distinction, he suggests that niceness involves telling someone what they want to hear.Kindness, on the other hand, is speaking the truth in a way that respects the person.

Tyler latches onto this distinction as an opportunity to extend some kindness to Eddie. We take a bit of a turn as we spend some time listing things that make us want to eagerly share some kindness.

Go out there this week and be kind to those around you while you build something awesome.

(upbeat music) This episode is brought to you by Bluebeam. You know what software you could pry out of my cold, dead lifeless hands? What's that, Bluebeam? (laughs) It's made this simple thing simple. It was built for people in construction, so I quit asking, why doesn't this software do this? It has made the everyday easier. I am so glad that it was my idea to install the software. You are a dang liar, sir. - It wasn't my idea. - No, it was my idea to install Bluebeam first. This is a great mystery in our company, and I guess we'll never know. - I have proof, I know for a fact it was me, but guys, it doesn't have to be a mystery for you, 'cause all you gotta do is you go to Bluebeam.com/bros and you can download a free trial today. And then you've got that marker in the sand that says, guess what? I was the one that had the idea to install Bluebeam. - Now you want it. - Yeah, Bluebeam.com/bros. (upbeat music) - Welcome to Five Minute Friday, everybody. Where are we? We share our best tips and tricks to help you get just a little bit better every week. Eddie? - Another quote? - No. - Really? - Really? - We'll be back next week, though. (laughing) What'd you got? What'd you got? All right, be kind. Don't be nice. Here's what I mean. Let's give an example. All right, so you come to me with a situation and I have knowledge that might upset you that I could feed back to you. Kindness is upsetting you anyway. I'm doing you a kindness because I'm telling you the truth. I'm doing you a kindness because I'm helping you. In spite of the fact that you might be frustrated at me for the moment. Being nice is, you know, I'm not a good person. I'm not a good person. I'm not a good person. What's nice is, like, you're happy. - Yeah. - I'm telling you what you wanna hear. - Right. - Well, from here you go. Oh, that looks great. Everything's awesome. - It's good. - Good job. - I can't believe this guy. - Oh my gosh, can you believe that, yeah. - Yeah. So be kind, not nice. We're gonna ignore that. - Can I be kind right now? Do you? - We're gonna ignore the fun. - I'm gonna be very kind to you right now. Every time we come in here, I ask you to turn off your freaking phone. And the one time I just trust that you do it, you didn't do it. And so we get your phone vibrating on the table. And that goes straight up into this microphone and goes straight into our viewers and our listeners. - Our viewers ears? - Ears. Straight into their ear holes, right? So stop doing that, man. - Yeah, all right. Weren't you the one that we got on a full podcast with guests that left his phone on? - That was, no, that was-- - No, that was you. - No, that was you. - That was-- - That was different. - You from my friend. - That was my wife. - My brother. - That was my wife calling me, sir. No, actually it wasn't. No, not that time. - Yeah. - So wait, are you now being kind to me by pointing out my fault? - Yes. - And I am kind, every time I can be to you, Tyler. (laughing) - Every possible time, I can be kind to you. - Even if I will be kind to you. - Even if I will. (laughing) - I take every opportunity I can. - Every opportunity I kindness, every time. - Well, he left more cups out. Now's a chance to be kind. - I'm gonna be kind. - Hey, you dip. (laughing) Pick up after yourself. - Sorry. - Yes, yes, that is kindness. - No. - What would niceness be? - Niceness? - Niceness, niceness. - Me fuming, like I normally do, you never fume. - I just talk to you about when I have a sink full of dishes left to me, a few. - And you don't actually say anything, though. - Oh, if I'm nice, I don't. But if I'm kind, I do. (laughing) And from now on. And from now on, I'm pledging to you, Tyler. I'm gonna be kind to you. - You know what? - About your dishes. - I think I'm a person. - I was kind to you yesterday about the clutter on the table. - I'm gonna reciprocate. - In front of our producer, I was kind to you. - I was kind to you. - In front of people, Tyler. - Wait, wait, wait. Where's the, wait, the clutter? Oh, that clutter? - The clutter. - Yeah, the clutter. - The dirty table. - One, only need look around your station to find the clutter. Kindness. Bam. - Are we getting the idea? Is this? - So. - Is this resonating? - But this isn't-- - But it's called us making each other better here. - I know, but like. Listen to every, we are enhancing each other. Iron sharpens iron, right? - Right now, right? - And sometimes the sparks fly when it's doing it, man. - It's true. That's true. Eddie, you know, I've been realizing lately. Yeah. I've been realizing something lately, okay. You, your hair just continues to go away. All right. I feel it is me being kind to you to go and buy you that spray on stuff that they had back in the 90s. Just be kind to you, you know? - I don't think that's kind. - I think that is, you know? I think that's kind. It's kind to all of us. And the light that shines on your head, and you know, it blinds us. - It's why we're ahead. - You know? - At all times. - But I know that you-- - Oh, that one episode. - Yeah, but I know that you like internalize that. - You even said that my head didn't shine too much in that episode. Not as much as you expected. - Yeah, but that's because you forgot to shave your head. Like you normally do. Like you will shave it. - Yeah. - And so-- - Thank you for that kindness, Tyler. I appreciate you. - You're welcoming out the thing that I have no control over so that you can give me a gag gift to make me feel bad about this. - Listen, you're the one that started it, all right? Like you're the one that brought this. - I don't think that was a good example of kindness, Tyler. - I think they're across the line, Tyler. I think you're making fun of something that I-- - We're gonna take it up with HR, ready? - Go take it up with HR. - Well, maybe I will, maybe I'll go to the top of the podcast later and find out who's there. Mom, settle this. - Come on. - All right, guys. - Do you get the picture? - Oh, I'm sick. - Do you understand? - Do you understand what we're saying here? Kindness, guys. Reciprocate it. Don't be nice. Be kind. You can go build something awesome. (laughs) Good job. Are we gonna air that? Holy heck, yes, we are. (upbeat music) - This episode is brought to you by Bluebeam.
