Geekscape 410: Our Only Option Is To 'Crush The Skull'!

I always love it when a Geekscapist tells me that they first heard about a comic, a game or a movie on Geekscape and that they turned out to love it. That's our main job here, isn't it? This episode of the podcast is no different as my friend Viet Nguyen drops by to tell Kenny and I about his new feature horror comedy 'Crush The Skull' about a few proactive criminals at the mercy of a serial killer. Kill them before they kill you, right? Alongside him on the show are actors Katie Savoy and Chris Riedell, who each have cool projects of their own. Chris' superhero series 'Some Kind Of Evil' even features our own beloved Stan Lee! And speaking of Stan, Kenny and I do get to talk a little spoiler free 'Captain America: Civil War' opinions. It's a packed episode so enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Right next to this episode where we're talking about a movie that opens this weekend in a couple select markets and then a week later, maybe a week from now, a little over a week from now, you guys can find it on iTunes and all sorts of VOD services. It's called Crush the Skull. I don't know if you've seen the short Geekscapes, but I think the short's amazing and it was directed by one of my good friends, Viet, who's sitting right here. And the movie comes out this Thursday. Yes, it does. And I'm glad to know that I'm one of your good friends. You are. You are. It's a very exclusive club, not because of my own choosing, but not a lot of people are in the staying in that club. The club's kind of dead. I mean, you do have that kind of friend-horry vibe, but... Yeah. Wait, is that what I want to go with? Is that really mean? No, no, it's not. I think it's talking about Captain America. I think it's accurate. Is it friend-horring or is it just flat-out desperation? Yeah, I think it's flat-out desperation. Well, we're both in the same market, so I think we found each other. We're in the market. Awesome. Geekscapes, you want to be our friends? Go ahead and know. This movie, we're also joined by Katie Savoy, who's in the movie, in our friend Chris Rydell, who is one of the two Rydell brothers, who I met like a month and a half ago. And I didn't put two and two together until earlier today when the Rydell brothers tweeted out that Chris was going to be on Geekscape. Same. And I was like, "I'm going to see you today. I emailed you." He emailed me, I was like, "Am I going to see you today?" And I said, "Don, if I see you first." Ooh, and #thegamebegins. Yeah. To which... Like... 10 seconds later? It still hasn't ended. No, they got this playing room on that. The game is... The game is in its early status. I think we went around to straight-horring. Yeah, just straight. It's very primal here on Geekscape. But like 10 seconds after I got the... I sent that email to Chris. I was all happy with myself. I was like, "Yeah." "It's going to be fun." And then I get a piece of spam for like some prepper thing, like product for survival. And the subject line in all bold was, all caps was, "You will not survive." And I just assumed because I'd just been emailing with him that it was Chris, like, quick responding. I was like, "This guy's fucking hilarious. He just sends me like the most threatening email." But it was the preppers though. Chris is like, "I'm really not that hilarious." I'm not funny. But I think Chris could have sent that email. Just know that Geekscape is that the friendship has been established to be a most dangerous game type of friendship. I like it. Where we give each other a lie. It's going to be like, "Yeah, it's going to be like Battle Royale." Where one of us ends up with a cheese grater and the other one ends up with a spoon and we have to hunt each other. But it'll be worth it in the end. I think we'll learn a lot about ourselves and each other and the limits of the human experience. I agree. This whole dynamic makes me really nervous. Katie, you're the sequel. She's the sequel. I'm all about it. Winter gets Katie. You just standing there. Wait a second. You just tossed her up. You're like, "Yeah, Winter gets Katie." No, Katie gets to fight her. Wow. It's hunted by Katie. I hope so. You missed out. You're the third film in the franchise called Rocket Sled. You're cried. It's like we just soup you up with all these weapons. You guys use me as the mechanism for jousting. I think that Geekscape is who you're creating. The Geekscape drinking game. It's drink when Jonathan says that we're going to weaponize Kenny's wheelchair. Yeah. Which is basically every two or three episodes. But let's not talk about that. Let's talk about this movie that's going to open in two days. Crash the skull. Let's talk about the origin of the movie. This short that you made. And all that. Or maybe your background. Or maybe suck a starburst into the microphone a little more. He's like, "Do we have the five man starburst delicious?" You guys want to see me blow a bubble? I can't. It's funny because I can't even hear it. I can't. No, it's cool. I was surprised that you could hear it. He just forcibly swallows it and dies. It's like, "Oops." How did he die? I feel so really bad. No, don't feel bad. Talk around the starburst about Crash the Skull. Because Geekscape is, if you're on the internet what you are right now watching this show, you can Google the short and I think the short is awesome. Why don't you talk about it? Let's talk about it. Actually, I mean, I told you about this. I still have the starburst first. It's going away soon. It's not going anywhere. Swallow it now. Our weapon is the starburst. The short was, you know, there's really nothing really kind of dramatic to say about this short at all. I mean, you were still in this heart. You know what? It kind of sucks. You know, the audience is halfway through brutally hitting. No, back to Ford. No, he doesn't even believe in it. No, Crash the Skull. I told you this. But I was just kind of in the middle of just shooting random shit all the time. And this happened to be the next project that I was shooting. I just bought a Canon 7D. This was like seven years ago. And I was like, "Let's shoot something." And my buddy, John, who is the DP of that short. This all sounds like porn right now. You're like, "Hey, let's shoot something." And then all of a sudden you're talking about DP. And I'm like, "Oh, this is definitely porn." Mine always starts with, "You know any girls who are very familiar?" We know each other. Or get that donkey mask. Mine starts like you'd prep for the purge. That's how mine would start. It feels right. I think we should just talk about that. But no, no, I'm being silly. I'm being silly. I think the short's amazing. No, yeah. But you just made it. Chris and I are my co-writer who started in it. We were trying to write a feature actually. And then we had this funny idea while we were watching a horror movie where we said, "You know what? I'm sick and tired of all these characters who are so unaware that someone's trying to kill them." So why don't we make a short where somebody, a serial killer, comes upon two people and they know that this guy is completely dead. They're saying, "Let's kill this guy first." So that was just kind of the idea. We wrote it really quickly. We shot it three weeks later in one day in one location with just, you know, there's three actors and three crew members. Me. It started to rain. Yes, that was not planned, but it ended up making it look pretty cool at the end. And thank goodness you shot in sequence. As you're watching it, it starts to sprinkle towards the end of the short. And I'm like, "I bet when they were wrapping up and getting out of there, they were fucked up hustling out." That's actually what happened when we drove away after shooting in the rain. Well, first of all, it started raining and I was like, "Oh, great." We got to come back another day. Exactly. Let's just shoot it and we'll see what happens. We're driving home and I'm like, "I don't even know what the hell we just did today." I was very discouraged by the whole thing. We ended up putting it together and then, I don't know, something happened and it ended up being okay. I think it's great. But what ended up happening is we submitted it to some film festivals and then we got into a really big one called the NBC Shortcuts Festival. And then we ended up winning. And then that kind of was the catalyst of everything else that's happened since then. It propelled you guys to have enough, maybe you won some equipment from an endorsement from Panavision. Yeah, package. We got a script deal with NBC so we were to a pilot for them. The main thing was you were maybe down the road towards that feature. Yeah, so we thought, "Oh, we'll use this Panavision package and shoot a feature next year." And then, of course, five years later. Hey, can we still use this package? I think my next step is I have to shoot a feature or else my wife will just burn the couch that I sometimes sleep on because my anxiety is halfway through the night. I'll be like, "I'm just going to read comics the rest of the night." And so she'll wake up, she'll see a stack of comics and a pillow and she'll know exactly what happened. And she'll be like, "I'm just going to burn the couch. You'll have nowhere to run, but just make the fucking movie." You'll have nowhere to go. In the movie, it turned out really good, guys. Chris was involved in that one too. Your co-writer, he co-wrote the film with you. He co-wrote and then he started it, of course. This guy is hilarious. Like, A, the script is funny. I had not seen this short. How could he have said it like you were surprised? You know what, that guy's actually funny. Guys, guys, Viet and I were in the Warner Brothers Directing workshop last summer and so I got to know Viet and very early on, Viet was like, "Hey, the LA Film Festival in which you guys won Best Horror last year. The LA Film Festival is going on and my film is screening." And I was like, "You know what? I just met this dude, but I want to see what his chops are and I want to see it." And you know when you go see a friend's movie, sometimes you're like, "It was good." Yeah. I mean, guys, there have been a couple times when I've got to see a friend's movie and you're like, "What'd you think?" I was like, "You made a movie!" I'm like, "All I can imagine right now is your friend Steve is sitting there going, "Just crying." You know what? I mean, Chris, Katie, you guys have been in that situation where it's like, it doesn't always work. It doesn't work and you're finding weird things to compliment. And I'm like, "Oh, that first song was really strong." Chris, is that the move? Because I always go to the soundtrack too. I'm like, "Then you get all those songs that completely tried to distract me from the fact that I can see the fucking microphone." I'm like, "Dude, this movie was ass." So I'm watching this movie and I was like, "I hope this is good because I got to see Viet for several more weeks of this workshop." And I thought the movie was good and right off the bat what I loved about it is that sense of humor. Having watched the short again for the first time recently, that sense of humor is there and it's consistent with the movie. And what you guys, I think, will see if you go see this film, especially you guys who are horror fans right now. There's two selling points for you, Geekscape. First off, like horror, if you guys are horror fans and horror comedy fans especially, which I know all you saw out of the dead fans are, go see this movie because it is both funny and frightening. And the other thing is, like, we're all talking about diversity. A lot of this cast is Asian and if you don't know it, it's Asian. But, and I said, "Can you bring me the Asian actors?" He was like, "No, I'm going to bring Katie and Chris." I'm going to bring more white people. But they're the minorities of the movie. Yeah, but they actually are the minorities of the movie. And I found it refreshing because you're intensely capable as a director. I found it really refreshing because of the level of humor in that script and the script is very tight and fun. And then I found it refreshing just because I got to see some diversity in diversity at a very high level, which is awesome. And I think Chris is a great actor and he was great. It was fun to watch him. You know, had that all come together and how long did you know Chris? Well, Chris and I, we met through the film festival circuits through the Asian-American film festival circuits. And then we decided to work on something together. And Crush the Skull was the very first thing we wrote to him. Holy crap, because you guys have a, there's like a familiarity with the material that, like, you feel like you only get through repetition. Yeah, it's one of those things where we just kind of hit it off and kind of got each other's humor right away. Asian ESP, I think is what you're going to say. Exactly. Asian ESP? Yeah, that's, that's the kind of cool term, actually. All right. What? What? I think it's ASP. It's like some Zen shit, you know, like, you know, it's like ninjas. What? What did you call me? This just got so racist. What's up? And then, at what point did Katie and Chris get involved? So, Katie and Chris were... They're not in the short. I looked for them. They're not in the short. Well, they were. I met these guys through Chris who had worked with you guys in some capacity. You guys can talk about that. Well, I'd known Chris in for, I don't think about six, seven years. I had done a little web series for him. And he's the one that reached out when you guys were looking for a new lady because they're first lady. Sorry, too far away from the mic. Sorry. Their first lady couldn't do the features, so they were looking for somebody else. And he sent me the script and sent me two reference shorts. Crushed the skull and then things you don't joke about, which is the other short they did together. And I realized I had seen both of them over the years because... Oh, nice. I just, I knew the other actors in those films and had loved them, you know, three or four years prior when I had seen them. Oh, yeah. And the soundtracks were really good. Right first song. Who did your music? Yeah. And it almost distracted me from what I was saying. And then Chris, how'd you get involved? Same deal. I had worked with Chris in through Wong Fu. I did like a short. I was in their feature. And then I think the same deal, he like sent me a script. And I had seen the shorts because I think Wong Fu would blast him out or somebody and Nathan, I think Nathan was in. Nathan was in one of them too. Yeah. And I thought it was hilarious and I was like, yeah, and I came in for the read. I think, was that the first time that we met each other? Yeah. And the audition? Yeah. The first time. And it was great. It was one of those ones that you're like, I hope I get it. You know, you leave and you're just like, it was a fun day, but you know this movie is going to kick ass if we, you know, no matter what. Yeah, I would say that these guys, you know, Chris knew them and obviously spoke highly of them. I'd never met them. The cool, the cool. But it was one of those things where both of them... They're white as fuck, but the cool, bro. They're fucking mustache for hireing them. I mean, they are white, but... But... But no, they came in and they were the ones that really got it. They really understood the balance of playing it real, but playing it funny. Sure. And, you know, not going... It's colorful, yeah. Yeah, I mean, just, they got it. They got that it's going to be really scary and it, but you know, it's not, but the funny is not going to be Ace Ventura. You know, kind of... Aw. No, I want to make that movie. It's gonna be more Ace Ventura too. Oh, yeah. When nobody's laughing. Nobody's laughing. Nobody wants to play with me and also nobody wants to watch the movie. Aw. I would say I love Ace Ventura and I would love to make one of those. Yeah. But that's a whole different genre, bro. Um, Geekscapes, we're going to talk a little bit more about Cress the Skull, but we've got to take a spot break here on ZHollywood. We'll be right back. We're going to talk to Chris and Katie a little bit more about what else they got going on. And of course, guys, look at the calendar. Realize you've already watched Captain America five times and say, "What else can I watch?" And then look at this movie as an option. We're going to be right back here on Geekscape, so don't go anywhere. Hey, what's up Geekscapes? Uh, we're back. And in case you didn't know from listening to the first 10 or 15 minutes, Cress the Skull is out in select theaters right now. Or in a few days. Where can they go for this website information? Like, where can they go to look at screenings? Oh, you can hit our Facebook page, Cress the Skull. Cress the Skull, yeah. But we are going to be screening starting this Thursday at the Limley in North Hollywood at 9.55pm. One of their cities. And then the only other city is Portland, actually. Okay. Yeah, we had some others that we kind of fell through, so it's going to be Portland and LA and then big VOD push after that. You guys do enough of the VOD and the movie has legs. VIT has agreed to do like a tour where he'll come to your house. Oh, yeah. And watch the movie with your parents. Do you have to have a certain size like television? Like, so it looks like a screener? No. No. I'll play it off my iPhone. I'll play it off the phone. Can you just come over and cook for me? I make great Vietnamese food, actually. Oh, sweet. VIT, is that true? Are you fucking around? Yeah, because I'm like, oh, we should do that. I can't make some Vietnamese dishes, yes. All right, we're going to do that. I'm sorry. I just invited myself to you. Geez. We did it for my wife and I. Yeah. We're here inviting you. All right. Then we're going to watch your movie. Don't worry. We're going to watch your movie. I'm so tired and full. Can we watch it tomorrow? Thanks for the food, VIT. Guys, again, like you said, go to the Facebook group or the Facebook page and check out where they're going to be screening. And then by this time next week or a little after next week, by next weekend, there's going to be this thing on iTunes. We launch iTunes and VOD and Amazon, all that stuff on May 17th. May 17th. I'm writing that down. I'm writing that down. I'm going to circle it. And then I'm going to draw a robot. He's doing an antenna. Jonathan, Jonathan. Oh, I'm still having a show. He didn't have eyes. Now he has arms. Jonathan? All right. Anyway, Chris. Yes. Chris and I met a month and a half ago when I was doing Stanley's Kamikaze all year long. I was hosting that over for our good neighbors at the stream and you were talking about your superhero series. Yeah. And well, I know the name of it. Some kind of evil. Yes. We did this for Stanley's World of Heroes. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. We got connected with some folks of the YouTube space and Stanley's World of Heroes. And they're like, hey, do you want to do a project with Stan Lee? And we were like, oh, yeah. Eric, let me think about it. And then, dude, I know what. What? Sorry, my childhood doesn't acknowledge you. But it was great. So we kind of came up with this idea of a superhero who's already kind of fallen down, figuring out if you can get back up. And he's an alcoholic. And it makes fun of itself as much as it is kind of serious. Kind of in the same vein, honestly, of crush a little bit. I think we probably subconsciously kept that tone. How long have you been sober? For about two and a half years now. For real? Yeah. Seriously. But you're being serious, right? Yeah, I'm being totally serious. Yeah, because that's like part of it, right? That's totally part of it, dude. Well, we wrote it. I was like, oh shit. I was like, there's kind of an ocean in kind of like, for me, whenever... Okay, so somebody is like, what do you love about superheroes? And it's never like the bombastic shit about superheroes. It is always what they say about us. Like, science fiction, you know? Like, superheroes for me, like what I love about them the most is the metaphor. Right. And so when you said that, and I was like... Okay, last time, you're like, where did you go to create this character? Yeah. And I was like, Nick and I looked at each other and we're like, are real lives? Yeah. At the bottom of a bottle. Yeah. I think that's as far as it got on Stanley's television. Hey dude. But this geekscave is a little more real. Well, it's a little more real. Yeah. But I mean, it was good. I mean, it's obviously a good thing in my own life. Uh-huh. But it was a fun, a fun character to explore. And so the idea is that we're, I can't say really who yet, but they're out there, hopefully developing this into an episodic that we'll carry. And I don't know, we'll see if we can get who to play the main guy. I might play... Will Smith. Will Smith. In Hancock too. Yeah. Darker version. Handcocked and loaded. Yeah. Whoa. I actually like that movie. I mean, I think that there's a lot there that like... That third act twist. Yeah. Well, okay. I just came up. Yeah. But I mean, he's great. Yeah, I mean, well, he's great. He's awesome, and Charlie Stearns is awesome. And I think it was the first time we saw Jason Bateman like not doing it. Like, kind of doing a comedy, but it was like Jason Bateman being like, "Oh, wait a second. He's got it." Yeah, exactly. This works. Before what he did in the gift, which was great. The gift's phenomenal. Which was... Yeah, I recommend. If you haven't watched the gift yet, watch it. The soundtrack is amazing. The soundtrack is awesome. The first song. The first song. Can you see the gift of the Gillette Gritin movie? Yes. That's like, holy shit. Gillette Gritin brothers are super, super, super talented. Right. Like, their shorts are amazing. Their movies are amazing, and I hate them. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah. So, I mean, that's kind of in process. And then my brother and I, we're looking to direct another movie this year. So, we'll see. Things are being signed. Well, we'll take what has to follow into place. No, like, basically, we started the process of signing papers now. Right. So, it's just everyone making decisions that are in bigger studios than us. Right. We kind of have to wait for other things to fall in place. And then. And for you guys not to fall out of place. Right. That's how it works, man. We attached this actor, and he doesn't quite get you. He doesn't like you. Yeah. Yeah. He doesn't like you. Yeah. He doesn't like you. Yeah. Yeah. We talked to Will. And he thinks it's a perfect first vehicle for Jayden's directing. Yes. Oh, God. And, uh, watch the best thing in the world. We don't really agree with the rocket sled, boy. I'm sorry. You're right. Yeah. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Oh, my God. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. And he kind of lost his way and you were like come back to the light. Yes Can you can you go back to really quickly? How did you have a superhero costume ready to go? Oh, yeah, I love how we like on geeks game. We just like Who doesn't have a superhero costume ready to go? So you totally have one if this was me in high school I'd have been like oh I can't continue the show We're gonna need to clean up our eye on me Oh The superhero Dig to no, I want to know now either way you were great. Okay, I'm sorry keep going sorry I mean, Chris and I had just done a movie together. Yeah, right before crash where we played Husband and wife and we're brother and sister and then we were lovers. Yeah, we do weird shit. Yeah I'm ready to go it was fun. It was a it was a fun. It was a fun project And so hopefully you know later this summer will begin something and then to be able to help my history Gonna be be it when it's called crescent skull - I know I'm I surprised it was so good You know, I just wanted to give you money to do it. I just go to You know you're like no, I still know right here credit if if I were if if someone else were to do crescent skull - I'd want them to do it Right me. Yeah, I'm I'm it would be in good hands. Yeah as long as like uncle Steve Austin's in it He's a skull crusher Who's the Asian version of stone cold Steve Austin? I'll go with that so when my brother when my brother was in ww one of his good friends was a guy named Jimmy Yang Who's like one of the one of the few Asians in ww if ever one day? Jim they changed Jimmy's gimmick to a cowboy Versus West type thing and he had to come out with an accent be like how do y'all? It was just so fucked up. I was like, yeah, he's got six months left on And you'd be like hey Jimmy, what do you think of the new gimmick because he lived in Korea He lived in Korea town and I feel like Jimmy, what do you think of the gimmick and he could just be like? Yeah, I Really like the soundtrack but he's wrestling is any gimmick any better or worse than any other gimmick It just seems like it's all pasta getting through I'm wrestling all it comes down to is if you keep winning Then you can just you're right if you hold that belt up at the end my my right Yeah, it would be like really digging down and being a real champion My brother texted me something earlier today if you get you just don't know this and you're not watching Lucha underground on all right my brother's now wrestling for them And he's one of the agents who developed some of the storylines and choreography for the some of the other wrestlers And he texted me someday about a new storyline and I can't they're taping the show is pre-taped And then they edit it together and they air it maybe like two three months later and He was so excited this weekend about this new gimmick they were gonna do and I was like good luck with that because it just sounded Psychotic and I don't I don't can't say it here on the air because he'll kill me crossover But earlier today I was texting back on the form of my brother and I was like hey, man How you doing he goes that blank blank gimmick went over like crazy and I was just like Watch wrestling fans. We got to learn what we got to find a way to make plenty of those guys We need to do a wrestling thing that'd be fun. I don't know. I just want to do more crush the skull Is there a potential for that if enough of these kids to go out to Portland in L. A Seattle go down to Portland well, I mean yeah I don't know if it's gonna depend on the theaters, but yes, it may be on VOD No, VOD no one can get 35 people to Thursdays. You can make it we will have a Trilogy. Yeah, yes, maybe quadrilege. Yeah, if you are in LA, that's true because we're gonna be there, right? Yeah, you guys will be at the Lemley on starting this Thursday and so Well, yeah, I think he's gave this if you guys want to have a pajama party and can stay up late enough We are going to be doing the ten o'clock screening. Yep at the Lemley no-ho and I'll be moderating the Q&A Yeah, we'll be Asian actors be there. Yes. They were there. There will be Asians there. Yes Checking they're checking. I mean, I love Katie. Oh, Chris, but like sure it's time. You know, you get out of the way Operations motherfucker reparations reparations of this bitch. All right, we're bringing something back for the minority Okay, of which that isn't which are the white people in the film though It's an internal battle that my Mexican American ass has to fight every day where it's like I hate you I hate you. I was here for never mind. I'm not gonna talk about my internal struggle You find your way. Did you find yourself driving out in the back into LA over and over again? I was like wait, wait, did you really know the trick I should be in yeah, okay, let's just say when I go to home depot I'm like, do I drive? I don't know. It's just got so fucking you okay. You went to Westlake, right? Oh, wait, no, I was born in like Barton Hill. I was born in like So like like I was I would have gone if the house I was born into I would have gone into the Austin school district You got an awesome high I would have been room. Oh, yeah. Thank God that didn't happen. That was that was also a rich school But yeah, well, yeah, but when you grew up when you grew up where you a Mexican kid or were you? I mean, yes, I've got I've got the rat tail photos to prove Like dude, we went full bowl cut my mom raised up She tried to raise us like full Mexican kids, and it just wasn't gonna happen when we moved to Westlake It just wasn't happen the rat tail had to go by the way Anyone who doesn't know what's like is the affluent what do you talk about? We all totally know all this stuff about Texas go on Westlake what are the top public school and Texas? People how dare you like I'm from Austin. I was like and I'm like, that's not awesome Let's keep in mind. Let's keep in mind my house close to the state capo then via its house. Wow information Real you technically grew up on the other side of the state as far as I'm concerned Right, and you stay on that side right kid. Yeah, I'm kidding Right. Hey Reagan high school represent. We don't have to see it. We don't have to we don't have to have this out here Okay Guys it's not all about Chris and his superhero web series right Katie's got one going on right now She's got this one called living with models dark. It's at living with models.com. I don't know what it is Cuz models don't talk to me what unless they're like models that I would make into little figurines for Dungeons and Dragons Okay, those are in the web series. You just have to look really hard to find all right They're just hidden they're hidden in the scenes. We're on season three right now and that comes out in June Lauren reader is the writer creator Jeff Newman's our director and Disguise in it basically look and Lauren by the way We know Lauren plays plays one of the Lauren is is plays the the girl trapped in the movie in question. Oh cool So she was a creator. Yeah, I don't want to spoil what her characters. Well. Yeah, she's trapped in her trap Yeah, and so she We found Lauren through Katie after we cast Katie and so anyway It's basically about a girl who has reality show about her life And then the producers think it's boring and they bring in these models In ridiculous you play one of the models is like who's extra And then season three we end up spoofing a lot of different reality kind of tropes throughout season Shot like a reality show. So it's like hey, yeah, it's great. That's cool. It's a it's on the first two seasons are hello giggles Okay, and then season three will be on live in the follows.com and then why the split what's going on there? Why like the hello giggles split like why not? I think they just change the stuff up when they book okay, okay, all right because they fucking hate each other I don't know what's going on with anything web portal. I don't know what's going on You know, I always think like oh, I just want to go to one place and get all three seasons Nothing bad. Yeah, that's google.com. You can find it all there. I don't know find us on the Google Yeah, how many episodes are in the seasons 12, okay? I think yeah, yeah, that's totally right Okay, okay It's it's a really really I mean actually what ended up happening is okay So we got Katie in and I started watching the season I was like whoa, whoa, I want that person and then we end up stealing a whole shit ton of people That that series I want every Asian in that show So the Too Asian Jessica Jessica who is the blonde woman in the beginning of the movie. She's in it Tim Who plays Riley? So funny when we were getting up to meet the first time I ever met you we sat down for breakfast And you're like so I was gonna watch the first episode of living with models to see kind of what you do And then I watch the whole yeah Similar I mean you show me like hey, you got any other friends I can use You got anything else my roller decks are running dry Geeks gave it we're gonna take another one of the spot breaks right here on Hollywood Z Hollywood and then when we get back we're gonna talk a little bit more about Crushed the skull with you guys in Portland in Los Angeles should be setting your schedules to watch and also May 17th be ready to download this thing. Okay, we'll be right back on Geeks Cape Hey, what's up? I think he had just tried to like tag team me I was like, what's this guy doing? No, who we were all doing the world so Jay are one of our engineers whenever and this happens every time we get new engineers throughout the Whatever years of doing the show is early on. They're like, hey, man Sorry about that mess up. I was like no the mess ups are what make this show like trust right not after nine years The audience is very very familiar That should be the drinking aspect of it if a geekscape episode was flawless. It wouldn't be geeks game Right, trust me. It would be something else. And I don't know if we want that speaking of flawless geeksapists I told you at the top of the show Ian Kerner and I sat down to talk about Captain America Civil War and there's a whole hour long conversation with the guy who knows everything about comic books Ian and I And I just want to tell you guys like if you haven't seen this movie and you probably have if you're listening geekscape It's the best Marvel movie. I think so. I think so Kenny. You saw it. Did you see it? Did you see it? I don't like we obviously like we're not gonna spoil it here because that's what the episode Yeah Captain Tony like are about to kill each other. They just go what's your not mother's name. It was a Martha. Oh god They start crying no I thought it was pretty incredible and here's the thing going into the movie I was a little apathetic and I have to admit geeks gave us you're like wait How could John that not be looking for like a superhero movie, but we just got Deadpool Yeah, that was amazing like for how good at all look at these things once a month now Right and you you're just like you're just waiting for it You're to be disappointed at this point because they're at they've all like most of them. I would imagine after Batman super right Yeah, I don't want to be a cynic, but like Deadpool was so awesome shortly after Deadpool remember we get 13 episodes of Daredevil Which is fantastic and I'm really stoked to see this Punisher spin-off. That's been greenlit because I thought John Bernthal was amazing And then we get Batman Superman and now there's like huge fighting on the geekscape Facebook group. I posted a picture that was a like a joke meme of Chris Evans Laughing with his hand on sad Ben Affleck. Yeah, like it looked like they were in the photo together And obviously as a Marvel shirt and Ben Affleck has a DC shirt and this like rotten tomato scores are above them so harsh it literally caught I mean the guys go to the kinky Facebook page and look at this thread because Everybody going the internet there are these DC fans who I mean the movie I don't think was I thought the movie was a bit convoluted and I thought the movie was over complicated and And it was what it was There was some cool shit in the movie man seeing like that the Holy Trinity at the end of the movie together I was like, yes, we got Superman Batman and Wonder Woman ready to kick some ass Yeah, and then there's parts where it's like Batman loves guns and guns were the one like Biggest thing in his life that shaped him towards this That's like being like like rice or Roni killed my parents love eating it. Oh let's just go tree Can't get enough of it just complicated. It's like wait a minute Yeah, he's like he's just complicated. Did you like Ben Affleck though? Is Batman is great? Yeah, and I trusted Ben and Geekscape has been named as an executive producer. I know that's a sleek movie So you got to have a little more fake. I think there's a little bit of course correction going on over there And it's and I'm open to all of it. I'm really looking forward to suicide squad. I think that thing has attitude See now we know why they wanted more Batman. Yeah, I think yeah But here's the thing as I was telling you somebody on that geekscape thread As I was defending not being a total Marvel fanboy cuz I don't think you can spend the amount of dollars I do in convox each week and just read one company's books. Oh God and so I was saying that like really the the The architecture of this thing has to be established firmly with Superman and I don't everybody their mom loves Batman It's great congrats, but I think Batman is a bit of a contradiction as a character I see him more as the Hulk and we talked about this on the show how I think that Bruce Wayne in Batman Coexisting within the same body doesn't totally make a lot of sense because if you're a billionaire You're gonna go around and punch people one at a time in the face dress like a rodent Yeah, it's probably not the best way to eliminate crime in a city and then vice versa If you're a guy who just loves violence, you would hate putting on a suit and being a millionaire You just want to be out there all day like Frank Castle taking people out So that character's always been conflicting to me But obviously the barometer for superheroes is Superman and if you don't do if you don't get that right if you don't make him very clear As man of steel may have not have succeeded in yeah then then it's hard to define the rest of the Justice League and everything that comes after because where's the Barometer for these people with the ultimate amount of altruism that will then Stop everything from a purse never to an intergalactic threat You need that ability to have a character that says no matter what I will lay myself down for those who are Less powerful than right and that that's exactly the reason where I why I call that movie Batman versus uberman Because they had the whole thing or like wait wait no, it's not versus it's V But then when I when I saw it, I was like no, it's versus and it just happens to be uberman And yeah, superman is nowhere existed in that film and yeah, the fuck is superman There were a lot of plate spinning and I don't know if they were all still spinning by the end of the movie But Captain America on the other hand it felt like it's a complicated issue Do we go and get registered under the government as vigilantes or do we continue our vigilantism? Unchecked and I love the writing in this movie. Yeah As much as I love the action in this movie and you guys go get the podcast because it's a lot more detailed I just thought as much as they were doing and as many characters are in this movie There's a crap ton of characters in this movie every single one of them had an arc and each of one of them had a justifiable reason for going For taking the stance that they were taking and all the stances were Obviously the kept the marketing campaign as team Iron Man team Captain America, but It wasn't that yeah, there were gradations between the two Like all the other characters like I want to decide with them more than either because they all have their own individual It was just very good writing so like black panther was Going to the movie and thinking okay. Well, this is more of the same and I know there's an X-Men movie around the corner Like I'm optimistic, but hey, I could wait till the weekend to see this Yeah, Ian got tickets for the first screening because he's Ian. I was like, okay I'll go see it in every five minutes I seem I feel like I was turning the lore and be like this is really good Like the actions good the writing's good. This is really damn good. And then by the time the movie was over. I was fully back on board Yes, if that is more of the same Marvel Sign me up for that because I wanted to see the movie five more times over the weekend That was last weekend though this coming weekend those you in Portland in Los Angeles You're gonna find yourselves in the theater watching crush the skull and then on the same team You're gonna be downloading it. Yeah, I've been doing the show for a while I've been doing the show right up into the point where it's past being sad and now it's just oh That's Jonathan. He likes to talk to people on the Internet At least it's not just a chat room like and with my free camp. I think it will be pretty soon We're just gonna be like the most lonely twitch channel. It would just be you and me. I'll be in the chat I'll be the first you love that twitch games. You're not following Kenny on Twitter every now and then like I and I get the emails Now because I follow you on twitch. It's like Kenny's about to go live and play a video game and I'm like fucking nerd I'm with you dude And I wish like like I want to go to E3 and I want to do other video game stuff But like honestly it's just too much time is too kind time consuming better if the writers do it Like the geeks gave writers and like that stuff's all coming you geeks gave us so like if you're going to San Diego comic-con We're gonna be there at booth 39 19 as we've been the last six years One thing we're also gonna do is we're gonna promote crush the skull at our booth at comic-con So if any of the guys from the movie are at San Diego comic-con We're gonna do it across the skull signing and we're gonna let you guys know where to get it on iTunes I just decided that for be it right now I was like cool, but I'm sure but I'm but I'm dead serious if you have a if you have a poster or if you have postcards Yeah, yeah, we're doing that for sure and then That's kind of why I built gear. We're kind of building. It's gonna be there as Vito. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I just thought about that No, yeah, yeah, yeah, I kind of was thinking it myself. Yeah. Yeah, only We're gonna define it, okay, and I think we'll just find you know, let's find it It's exploration will explore, but you're in the speedo. Yeah, it doesn't have to be pre thought They're known to be a very primal and instinct what under the surface here Um, what is this? Last year passion last year geeks in the November project chapter in San Diego. We sponsored a cosplay 5k Oh, so I ran 5k in the fucking speedo, which I had actually done before and people were like, yeah And here's the thing we put the course behind the convention center where on the Friday where everyone who wants to get return tickets is standing in line Like 3 a.m. They're all standing in line out there. So and I knew that so I was like for maximum exposure No pun, please for maximum exposure. We should have the 5k course go past all these kids who are in cosplay Oh, and then we have a bunch of people in cosplay running past them and people showed up It's like Thor and Catherine America all the stuff they ran the race But we're gonna do that again this year and I think Sam will be there as well I think super action man will definitely be there. Yeah, so I'm throwing the gauntlet down for Chris here to be like Hey, man, you're running the 5k with us with in the speedo. Yeah Yeah, go ahead then I won't be so low and if I have diarrhea Waters right there right there right there. Suddenly. It's Aquaman cosplay Good job. I mess with the city. Oh man. The oops - you guys dead fish just raised I might control all of them via what is next for you, man You got this movie and then like you and I talked you directed an episode of my zombie this past season Yeah, I'm gonna put him the safe bet.
