We've all come down here for. The King of Kong, or the Comic-Con Convention, and the King of Kong Festival of Quarters has a booth here and I'm here just for the publicity and the more. That's right. My guest host right now is, right now you guys are like, "Who the hell is this guy?" I'm telling you right now a year from now. You're going to be a skywalker to these people. I'm here with Steve Weavy. He's the, you want to say main character, main actor. Yeah, but it's real life. It's you. Yeah. So competitor. That's right. Back in episode 12, remember, about 20 episodes ago, I told you guys about a movie. I saw South by Southwest, King of Kong. I didn't know I'd be standing here. The main subject of the film, Steve Weavy. You know I raved about it. Raved about it again when I saw it a couple weeks later and pretty nervous right now. Well, I'm flattered. That take a chill pillow. We're good. We're all good here. I'm flattered. You know all about pressure. That's the deal. You know all about pressure. Yeah, it actually will make your game rise a level. So you don't have to be nervous. Just relax and everything will be good. Deep breath. Well, this is Geekscape. It's all about movies, video games and comics. And this is a movie about video games. And it has the drama of our favorite comics. This movie, the King of Kong, is the drama that happened to your real life where you went through some rough times. You're a teacher in Seattle in Kirkland, Washington. Kirkland, Suburb. But you came about teaching because you've been laid off. Sure. And to get back on track or just focus, fill your days. What were you going through? Just for fun. Yeah, I had been working at Boeing, got laid off. And I actually got another job in the computer science, like doing software testing. Got laid off there. And during this time, I was really curious about the score I had achieved back in the early 90s when I was really playing Donkey Kong. I had a machine in my fraternity and it mastered the game. I got to a screen that killed me and I had not been hit by any obstacle. There was no barrel or fireball that got me. I learned later on it's called the kill screen in that I was always curious what is the high score in Donkey Kong. So I looked online, saw that it was in the 870,000 range by Billy Mitchell. And I thought, "Hey, I'm going to have to go buy a machine now and try to get that." I could do this. Yeah, I knew I could get the record. So I just went and got a machine again because I was looking for something to cheer me up through all this being laid off. I mean, we have tons of listeners out there who are out every night on the Xbox live trying to get achievements. They're trying to get scores. You're the guy who got the score. Then once you had the score and you had proof of the score, then we started adding the other characters in the film who started doubting the score and doing anything they can to keep the score from going into the record books. Yeah, so there's a group of gamers that I wasn't even aware of when I was casually playing game in my garage submitting a videotape. And once I had kind of infringed on one of their legendary gamers records, then they started trying to figure out, "Is this guy for real?" And when they looked into something, there was a time when two guys came to my house and looked at my machine. Almost broke basically in your house. Yeah, they didn't... I don't know the legality of the term. They were led in, but... You watched the film, and it comes to this point, we don't want to run too much of the film because the best film you're going to see this year. But it really makes you angry. Yeah, I mean, you get... I mean, throughout the film, you're feeling this drama... There's an emotional anger. Yeah, I was kind of a little bit upset when I arrived at and saw two people in my garage. And you don't fuck with leaving? Yeah, that's what it comes down to. But I was polite about it, and when I met them, they introduced themselves, and I let them go about their business. But then they found something that linked me to Roy Schilt's character. Who's somebody who had crossed paths with them before? Yeah, and... Thank you, thank you. There was some bad blood between... They crossed paths with me before... Are they cheering for you? Yeah, I don't even know what I'm doing. So the bad blood between Roy and Billy... Brought a ton of heat on you. Yeah, they looked at me as, "Hey, this guy's in cahoots with this." Yeah. So now you have to go and prove that not only did you get the score once, you can do it again. Do it again, if you can do it once, you can do it again. That's what the movie is about. I talked to Seth Gordon, your director, who came in, I guess he heard it from the story from your friend. Sure, yeah, that's how we hooked up. Ed, the producer, Ed Cunningham, his friends with Mike Thompson, who I've grown up with. So he was in my band, we had a band together, we played baseball together. And Mike was always keeping him in tune with what was going on with all this. And when it got to a point where the guys came over and entered my garage... Yeah, then it was like, "Ed, you got to follow the story, this is getting crazy." And then Ed... It gets crazy. Yeah, from there, they jumped on board right about that point and it even got crazy. The guy whose record it was was Billy Campbell, who is just like... Billy Mitchell. Billy Campbell, who's Billy Campbell? There's a Billy Campbell. There's a Billy Campbell, right? Wasn't he the rocketeer? He was the rocketeer. We're all geeks here. Billy Mitchell, that was his record. They're Billy Mitchell fans. That was his record. But you're going to show them up. You're going to go to... Yeah. Where's this place you have to go? So it's in New Hampshire called Fun Spot. You've got to go to Fun Spot. Yeah. I mean, he adds as normal as you are as a human being and as good as you are as a human being. You can almost say the opposite is true of Billy. Yeah, I'm not going to label him as... We don't know him personally. Yeah. So I don't know. But from the footage that the director was able to gather, you know, he's pretty private. You know, he has his private life. He didn't let them into his home and research everything about his life. So from what they gathered, yeah, he comes across as that. That's the guy you want to see get beat. Yeah. He had a perfect Pac-Man record. Yeah. He was the first to get a perfect Pac-Man score. But this movie's all about you trying to take him down. Yeah. And we'll leave it up to you guys. We'll leave it up to you guys to go out and see it. But we've King of Kong comes out August 17th. They'll be opening in Austin, Texas. Where I saw it? Yeah. New York, L.A. and Seattle, which is my hometown. And then the next week it'll open in 10 more cities. What do you think of Comic Con? What do you think of all this? This is great. You know, the weather is fantastic here in San Diego. You do know that this is the easiest you're ever going to have getting around Comic Con. This year, because once this movie comes out, you're going to be bigger than Luke Skywalker. You know that, right? You might want to dress as Luke Skywalker just to have some anonymity. Well, yeah. Or dress as Chewbacca. Sure. Nobody's going to know who you are next year. It's Chewbacca. Maybe the only way you get around, because the second people see this movie, they're going to love it. Well, I'm a hero to that. Yeah. You know, it's great that I'm flattered. Come on. Yeah. I just want the success of the film would be great. I just wanted people to go see it and kind of feel what I went through and enjoy the ride. It's really amazing. Well, what I told Seth was that the moments with your family, the moments where we get to know you a little more, take your family to the beach in the midst of all this drama really gives a context to how human this is. Yeah. Just going after a goal. Sure. Just going after something and achieving it because you believe that you can do it. Yeah, that's pretty much the message it could be about any competition. Yeah. We've all been wrong. Yeah. Anyone should be able to relate. Most people can about something. They were an outsider, they were kind of label something. They did something where they deserve credit and they had to fight for what they believed in. So you're like Sylvester Stallone in over the top. Yeah. You could say Ralph Majo and Crotty. Ralph's what I kind of joke. Don't clap in there in every movie. Yeah. That's right. Your favorite movie, I'm going to wrap you up about your favorite movies, video games, comics that the show is about, what are some of the stuff that you geek out on? As far as movies or about video games, I never got into the comic book craze. I collected baseball cards, kind of what I did when I was growing up, and this played video games. Atari 2600 was like the huge console in the house and it went to arcades. But nowadays, I got a family I'm pretty much teaching, you know, raising, you know, spending time with the family. I play Donkey Kong here and there when I get a chance and just enjoying it the ride right now for what, because it doesn't happen everybody. This is what's happened with this movie. I never would have thought this would happen. I don't think the ride has even started. The movie hasn't been seen. Yeah. The public has been in the festivals and if the public reacts like the way the festival crowd, this movie will be. I'm telling you, you're going to come back next year and be like, people are going to be like, you see weebie, you're going to have to come dress as Chewbacca or clean or something. It's going to be the only way you're going to be able to pass it this place without getting just taken down. What? Yeah. Dress is a Naruto character. Do you know what Naruto is? I do not. Yeah. I don't think I get it either. It's one of these Japanese animation things. All right. Well, I'd love to come back next year and yeah, we'll see we'll see what happens. The saga continues, Billy Mitchell is not going to go away quietly and I'm not either. Sickle baby. Yeah, there's going to be a sequel probably. It's like a game Donkey Kong Junior? Yeah. There is a Donkey Kong Junior but the Donkey Kong has the, yeah, no one really cares about Donkey Kong Junior. Donkey Kong has the roots of just the classic legendary game. And Seth is doing a fictionalized version of this movie. There's going to be a remake. Who's playing you? I don't know yet. But I guess you talked Ralph Machio and I said that should be one of, or Mark Hamill. Mark Hamill. That was kind of a, he's probably. You're going to be bigger than Luke Skywalker next year because you're the real thing and you didn't have bad prequels. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Tell Seth not to make a bad prequel. Don't go back in time. You're a man. All right. You know, where he adds a bunch of stuff and you know, it contradicts the way we've already seen. Okay. I'll remind him. This movie stands alone, dude. Well, you know, I've got to pick up some rocks and some big boulders occasionally, just battling all these creatures that you'd find in the game, keeps you pretty fit, running around, chasing. I'm made and I don't know where she went. I'm always having to chase her. Keeps running away from me, so keeps you pretty fit right there. Hey, guys, all you F-Zero fans, big video game fans. You basically can use any element when most people are restricted to one or two. And it's, uh, it's a standard thing, I guess. You can detach any part of your body and use it as a weapon? Um, sort of. He just sends him out and attacks people with him. He has... He has five hearts. He's torn out of other people. And he can use them to use any element he wants and control his body parts when they're not attached to him. You know the body part I'm wondering about. Does he ever use that to send out and maybe... But all of those great actors, all of those fabulous characters, and they were like, "Oh, we're going to have the beast. We're going to have this. We're going to have that. We're going to add this. We're going to add that." And I was kind of like, "God, I'm interested in what you already have." But for them, it was about, you know, keep the spectacle going, which makes sense. I get it. It's just a different way to go. So yours was maybe more character driven. There's more plot driven. I would say so. Wow. It's great. It was driven by my plot. Awesome. care of this baby because she dies okay so the court did you spoil some shit for us this happens like right away so now let me just tell you this movie is all about action okay every single moment is full of action it you know I wanted I was I was watching him like is a super action I had to I had to judge of course of course I wouldn't call it super action what I would say is that they wanted it to be super action but they didn't quite make it there you know my best subs in my best description of this is it has everything I loved about crank and just those action sequences that just build like it starts off just bam and it just works its way up and each time you're like how are they gonna top this last action scene how are they gonna top this and then they do and how are they gonna top that and then they do and how are they gonna top that and then they do and it just keeps going and going and going and going and going I feel like there's an accept coming on well the only problems really is that in the in between moments between the action sequences they they have the thing that I hated most about lucky number seven right in the fact that they just were a little too quippy right they you know self-aware the guy the guy the the director Matt I didn't get his last name I didn't get his last name but this is his first it's his directorial debut and he was there beforehand and I will tell you this isn't spoiling anything but it might just help you enjoy the movie a little bit more is that he said that he used to be he's a big fan of the James Bond genre okay of the the villains that are just really put together and the heroes that are just really put together no matter what no matter what situation they're put in and if you bring that into the theater you're gonna enjoy it a lot more because I think that if you just if you just go into it you're gonna have a good time I would say go see it matinee maybe you know check it out check it out check it out it's definitely worth it I think a lot of people in our audience will get a kick out of it and I will say this first movie soundtrack in a long time that from the very first song I'm like I'm getting this they're not even I stop reading those I'm not even worth picking up and right now with the news with that we just said kind of vaguely is that we're now gonna have three Spider-mans a month three Spider-Man books coming out a month which means that these three guys are gonna be writing the same continuity and I think it's gonna be a train wreck remember the other that was nothing that was that happened that was that happening three guys doing three a month that was that's what that was happening that's what we're gonna get amazing Spider-Man's one of my favorite things especially right now are you reading your night right now right now with the back and black with him getting all pissed he's actually gonna you know kill Kingpin if Aunt May dies it's exciting but I think they're gonna yeah dude you big on the Metal Gear song a series I gotta tell you right now dude this morning I woke up grab this grab the mic grab the mic center is up center is up and where we go where we go dude did you see this playable stuff on Metal Gear 4 this is Metal Gear 4 Guns of the Patriots they had gameplay video running have you seen this no I missed that dude I was by the Konami booth dude I was it's online there's gameplay video let me just tell you a little bit of what happens because this is the first time I've actually been up for getting through a Metal Gear game because for the most part they stressed me out too much and I just want to run through and shoot people this one you've got a guy using Octocammo where you hide in all these different shadows and stuff but it looks like the mechanics are so subtle there's so many things that you can do to take people out you can hold somebody up knock them out you've got a knife that electrifies them knocks them down but it looks sweet dude yeah it's tough it's smooth yeah it looks sexy and there's no cardboard but there's a cardboard box but dude there's a can you can get inside of a giant drum barrel and once you're in it takes more damage you roll you knock the guys out the footage of this is awesome the one problem with using the role technique on the drum barrel when you get out you puke nice I didn't see that I didn't catch it the details in this game are incredible you can also go into the first person shooter mode yeah yeah a lot of amazing stuff too there's the first one that I actually really want to get it's a really really great series I love Metal Gear series but some of the other games that we can expect for you out of musk be playing up on Xbox Live when we take you down well I'm looking forward to the new Street Fighter HD 2 remix because I've been did it have you seen anything like that here I always buy the Capcom booth but I didn't catch none of that they were just showing off the what is it Resident Evil 4 for the Wii I didn't get to play none of that they're showing off Devil May Cry 4 yeah I didn't get to play that either no it looks pretty sick like you know one for a metal Devil May Cry but yeah I will pick that up if I get the money so what else you got what else you got in video games you've been hanging out with a lot of the video game booths I'm kind of right now I've been playing a lot of Warcraft so that's why you guys haven't seen me on Xbox Live but if I'm ever on Xbox Live and you guys do have you know a game I have good you know we'll put it up go matcho
