Evolving Prisons

Psychological dangers of prison work

William Young is a Correctional Officer in Nebraska, USA and has been in this work since 2005. He also has a business called Just Corrections where he aims to bring awareness to the emotional and psychological dangers of correctional work. In this episode, William speaks about the impact being a Correctional Officer can have on your physical and mental health, and your life outside of work. We discuss his book, 'The Nothing That Never Happened', where William shares experiences that happen in prison that officers don’t think are a big deal but can actually cause trauma to them. We also discuss why we believe Correctional Officers should be seen in the same light as the police force, the fire service and the health service.

You can purchase a copy of William's book here.
