In our daily lives, we still frequently encounter difficult and distressing situations that we absolutely have no control over, the global economy, and how it affects us all. Surely, we are afraid of all these things that are happening. We are afraid that one day, our lives might be affected directly and badly. We worry about the existence of our own lives here on Earth. So what is the message of our Lord today for us? We hear Jesus using the term, "I am." As in, "I am the good shepherd." John chapter 10 verse 11, "Nrsv, and what will he do?" As a good shepherd, he will not only protect us, but will also take care of us and feed us. He will look after us. We hear another important phrase from Jesus, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." John chapter 10 verse 10, "Yes, life is full. Yes, life is abundant. Reassuring, isn't it? But this is not our daily experience. We are often taught to accommodate more because we never feel enough. Then in that search for more, we become greedy. We become cautious of others when we see them having more or less than us, the ones who have more than us may have the power to take what we have. The ones who have less than us may also find ways to steal from us. Eventually, we become enemies to each other. We are often taught to have our guards up. We become selfish just to take care and protect our own lives, even at the risk of others' lives, when we are at the edge. So the question we ask is, what are we to do? We should recognize the voice of the good shepherd, that he will protect and take care of us. We recognize his voice by being attentive, and remember what he says, and obeys what he instructs. And how do we live our lives, knowing that God is watching over us, in the midst of the many bad things that are happening. Genesis chapter 18 verse 15 says, "I am with you, and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. Our Lord, our loving Father, our good shepherd has promised that he will watch over us all the ways we go, and all the corners we turn because he has a plan for our lives. He will not leave us to the destruction of earthly calamities and damages. So what more shall we ask from him? Let us live our daily lives in joy and peace, knowing that God's loving hands are with us always. Some of us might jump right away to the conclusion that God has abandoned us when things go wrong in our personal lives. But God is always with us if we feel alone during our time of need. We think at times there are issues and concerns to trivial, to bring to the Lord in prayer. We are mistaken. If we think there is anything too small or insignificant to bring to the Lord, He cares about every little detail of our lives. The reason why we should not be afraid is that the God who cares about the fate of every sparrow will not stop loving us when we fall. Matthew chapter 10 verse 31 says, So do not be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows. If Jesus mentions the care of God for each and every sparrow, perhaps the most common of birds. Jesus wishes to demonstrate just how valuable each one of us is before God. Jesus said that not once sparrow falls to the ground without your father's consent. God does not prevent sparrows from falling and perhaps dying, but He knows and cares for each one of them. At times we think that we have fallen so many times and have disappointed God so much, and that He no longer cares for us and might start punishing us for our offenses. Jesus assures us, God knows when we fall, but still continues to love and care for us. When we stumble, He holds us even more strongly, and that is when we need to hold His hand even more tightly. Our God is not an evil tyrant, watching and waiting for us to fall and thus be punished. Our God is a loving Father who always wishes the best for us. Just as He watches over every insignificant sparrow that falls, much more does He care and watch over each one of us. Many of us struggle with fear about our health, our jobs, and our financial and family problems. We would find peace with the assurance that we have a loving Father who cares about every little detail of our lives, so we should not be afraid of anything that comes our way. God knows and He cares. He will never leave or forsake us. We can leave our fears behind and say, "If He watches over each sparrow, I know He is watching over me." Lord God, we pray for Your protection. You are our hiding place, and under Your wings, we can always find refuge. Protect us from trouble wherever we go. You are watching over us. You are able to see everything we do. Your eyes are looking at each one of us. Only You can help us and save us from our situations. Help us to walk in the way where You lead us to walk.
