Born, in a stable, or in a cave, among cattle, he certainly was a humble gift. God in his wisdom chose to send Jesus not born like a king, but born as a king, but born in such a way that every single person on the face of this earth could identify with him, because he was born this simple child. And the fact is that when he grew up, here's what he said about himself. He said, "I came not to be served, but to serve." And so, where he was born fits who he was. God sent his gift to us, and Jesus came in the most humble of circumstances. He was born in a cave, not in a palace. He was wrapped in rats, not even clean sheets, and certainly not satin. He shivered in the cold night air, as he entered our world, and breathed our air, and lived our life, and walked on our shoes, and then he died in our place. Why did he come? Why did God send his son to this earth? Why did Jesus walk among us as a man? Why was all this done? So God could give to you the greatest gift of all, the gift of eternal life. Romans 6, 23 says, "It's the gift of God, which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." How do you receive this gift? Jesus said in John 17, 3, "This is the way to have eternal life to know you, the only God in Jesus Christ, whom you have sent." So my question for you is, do you know God in a personal way tonight? This is why he came to bring you this gift. This gift was his very son, as I were told over in Isaiah 9, 6, unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. It was a gift from heaven. Jesus himself said, "For God so loved the world." He gave his only begotten son, and whoever believes in him will not perish, but have ever lost in life. Jesus Christ, according to Christmas, is God come to save us, to do for us what we can't do for ourselves? To know him is eternal life. It's not like he comes and you follow him and you do the things that you should do when you live a good life, and then God blesses you and God saves you. No, no, he is the life. That God knew exactly what we needed. We needed a Savior. And all that that involves, a deliverer who could deliver us from our own sinfulness because we would never be able to deliver ourselves. So God sent a gift, Jesus. And a lot of people spend their whole lives trying to repay him, or feeling like we're not doing enough, or we haven't made up for all of our past sins, and we're working, working, working, working. Well, that's not what God wants. He wants us to enjoy the Savior that he's given us, enjoy our forgiveness, enjoy this life that we can have. God the Father sent him because the world, living in sin, needed to save you. He came as a needed gift because the truth is every single one of us have, all of us have needed him. Each one of us needs him. Every person needs him. And many people need him who do not even believe that he is, or that he exists, or that they have any needs. It is sinned within us that makes our need of the greatest gift God has ever given. The only person who can meet the sin need is Jesus Christ. He came into this world for the primary purpose of meeting that need. And when he was introduced, John the Baptist said, "He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." No gift ever known in mankind could match that. He was a very needed gift. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 9 and verse 15 says, "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift." He's talking about Jesus. The you and I can't put into words how awesome the gift of Jesus is. We still will be learning about this gift. We still will be marveling at the magnitude of God's grace and giving us Jesus Christ as a gift, as the Savior to save us from our sin, and that 100,000 years into heaven will still be learning about how great this gift is, unable to put it into human vocabulary because of the greatness of his gift. And yet as expansive, as magnificent as that gift is, still God has expressed it in a way with such simplicity that every single human being can understand that God has given a gift. The most famous verse in the Bible is probably John 3 16, where we read this, "For God so loved the world. He loved you. He loved me. He loves everybody. He loves all humanity." That he did what he gave. That's what Christmas is about celebrating the gift God gave. What did he give? He gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Jesus is God's gift to you and I. He is God's awesome gift to you and me, and everything good about us and all the hope and assurance and confidence that we have in light is wrapped up in the person of Jesus Christ. God did the most awesome thing. He came to earth in the form of a natural born baby. But he was sent from God the Father as a little boy, being God at the same time, having laid aside his glory, to be born into this world, to walk among men in order to reveal to us who the Father's like. We learned the intensity of God's love, the personhood of God, how he desires to have a personal intimate relationship with him. Things begin to take on a whole new perspective of our view of God. He says he was the gift who came down from heaven. He's God's awesome gift for us. And you see, the reason the Father did it the way he did it, sending him as a babe, revealing the Father, growing up, dying on a cross, going back to heaven, so that every single one of us could have him. And you think about the fact that he is a spiritual gift. Listen, he's the one gift that you and I have that no one can take away from us no matter what. Can't be bought, can't be remade, can't be cloned, just one. Nobody can take him away from us. Think about this. He's the one gift that you and I have that we can give away and still have. That no matter how many times we give him away to someone else and talk to them about him and introduce them to Jesus. And shall we say, give him them the gift of Jesus in their life. We still have him in ours. There's no gift like that. He's the eternal Son of God. What a gift. Every other gift you've ever received will pass away sooner or later. This is one that will not.
