In this episode I'm reading from Graeme Rendall's book 'The Frenc
h UFO Wave of 1954'.
In the second half of 1954, France was the location of numerous UFO sightings, some of which involved encounters with or observations of strange beings. It was the first large-scale "wave" of reports that occurred outside the United States since the start of the modern-day UFO phenomenon at the end of June 1947. A somewhat sceptical public found themselves bombarded with almost daily stories of strange lights, spherical craft or disc-shaped objects in their local newspapers, the press faithfully reporting on the hundreds of incidents that came to their attention. A few were hoaxes but the vast majority involved ordinary French citizens faced with the complete unknown. This new book lists most of the cases where at least some detail beyond a simple "light in the sky" is mentioned, culled from contemporary newspaper accounts. It tells the story of a perplexed nation, one that found it difficult to make sense of what was happening. Witnesses being paralysed, vehicle engines stalling and small hairy beings - the cases here provide a fascinating look at the French UFO "wave" of 1954.

(upbeat music) This is episode 41 of UFO Encounters. This week I'm reading from Graham Rendles' book, the French UFO wave of 1954. When I have guests on my podcast, I read their books to work out questions for the episodes. When I'm reading these books, I always find such fascinating information that never makes it into the podcast. And here I get a chance to give you a peek into the book. I've put a link to the book in the show notes, and I did seek permission to record the extract from the book and the author kindly said yes. And if you enjoy the podcast, please leave a review and be sure to subscribe. So I'm gonna start right at the beginning of the book. This is the first chapter, it's titled August 1954. This is what Graham has written. By the beginning of August 1954, the modern day UFO phenomenon was just over seven years old, if one discounts both the Foo Fighters and the Ghost Rockets. For most of those years, sightings of flying discs and other strange objects had largely been an American affair. June 1947 had seen pilot Kenneth Arnold witnessed nine unknowns moving at speed in apparent line formation over the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. Almost immediately, a whole host of sightings took place in the Pacific Northwest and across the rest of the country. But what about elsewhere? Were other countries home to similar events? As it happened, the answer to that question was yes. The number of reported cases may not have been so many, but a combination of reports appearing solely in limited circulation foreign language publications. Ones whose stories rarely broke into the English speaking world and a natural tendency for the American press to concentrate on sightings in their own country may have accounted for the US-centric focus. By the beginning of the 1950s, however, UFOs were a worldwide phenomenon. French researchers Charles Garro and Raymond Lavier received a letter from Madame Carrier informing them of something she witnessed in that we did dome area of France on the second of August 1954. Madame Carrier was on holiday with her husband and six children in the village of Saint Cervela Saint. On the morning of the second, she was returning to their holiday accommodation from collecting some provisions when she saw a black balloon land nearby, from which emerged, as she said, a very small man with a dreadful face, his face all black. Another being had remained in the balloon shaped machine. According to the witness, the one who ventured outside did so for just a few seconds before jumping back inside. The UFO immediately took off and ascended without any sound whatsoever, although it did leave a white trail behind it as it climbed away. Madame Carrier then found two cows in a neighbouring meadow. They had apparently fallen to the ground with their necks, as she said, rung as if they'd been tortured. There were two other witnesses, a farmer and his wife who was standing next to Madame Carrier. She told Caroo and Lavier in her letter that they, like she had been paralysed as if thunderstruck. The following day, another sighting occurred in the Poudy dome area, a Champau resident, Emporge, reported seeing a strange object heading for the Poudy dome. No further information is available, however, so it is unclear what the witness observed. According to pioneering French UFO author Jimmy Goh in his 1956 book, Blackout Sur la Suque Valance, on the evening of the 6th of August, 1954, there was a sighting at Beaumont du Perigord in the Dordoin. At around 2240 hours, Madame Lagoth thought she heard a whirring sound like the noise and aeroplane made. Looking up into the sky, she tried to locate the source of the sound but was unsuccessful. Even though by that point, it was rather perceptible. Calling for her husband and another member of her family, all three tried to see where the noise was coming from. At about 2245 hours, they saw a glowing point appear at the end of a long white trail. The latter looked like the light beam from a projector. At one stage, the point of light grew larger and then reversed itself before disappearing. Madame Lagoth initially believed that it was an aircraft but the three onlookers continued their visual. This was rewarded a quarter of an hour later when another whirring sound came from the Southwest. A red light looking almost bullet-like in shape like it had been fired from a revolver appeared followed by another similar object. By this point, her husband had summoned a neighbor to accompany them and to provide a further witness to what was taking place. A couple of minutes later, the two points of red light suddenly merged and then disappeared. The whirring sound reappeared some 10 minutes afterwards accompanied by a luminous white light that moved slowly across the sky. At around 20 hundred hours on the evening of Saturday 7th of August, 1954, what was described as a cigar-shaped meteor was spotted in the skies above the town of Doselle in the Vauge Department of Northeastern France. The sighting made the pages of La Libertaire de last newspaper five days later and this is what they wrote. The phenomenon seen in the sky over Doselle's, a cigar-shaped meteor was observed moving horizontally on Saturday, August 7th at around 8 p.m. on Rue Claude by several trustworthy local people and summer visitors. Their attention was suddenly attracted by a luminous phenomenon that moved in a north-easterly direction and was visible for about 20 seconds. This thing was not an aeroplane or a shooting star. It disappeared without an explosion. Was it a flying saucer or a meteor of the same nature as the one observed in the sky at Contraville, Vitale and Remermont? Mention of Contraville, Vitale and Remermont referred to two further UFO sightings which occurred on the day after the Doselle's case. At 0300 hours on the morning of Sunday 8th of August 1954, residents in the towns of Contraville and Vitale, also in the Vauge Department saw a second cigar-shaped object which was again reported in La Libertaire de last. This is what they wrote. A cigar flying in the sky over Contraville? Last Sunday at 3 a.m. Many trustworthy people observed a curious meteor that was moving horizontally in a south-to-north direction above Contraville and Vitale at an altitude which was estimated to be approximately 800 or 1,000 meters. The machine, if it was one, was of uncertain shape. Although some said it was cigar-shaped. Others say a flame escaped from the rear, one followed by a trail of sparks. It was not believed to be a shooting star or pyrotechnics as the fireworks at Lactallal Foil had finished an hour earlier. As it passed over Vitale, the meteor increased its speed considerably and disappeared. Vitale, of course, is better known for its grand spring which provides the bottled water whose brand bears the name of the town. Contraville is located just to the west, so residents of both locales would have had a good view of this cigar-shaped object. Some 30 miles to the southeast was the town of Romeremont where the same phenomenon was spotted that same morning. Here's a quote, "The flying cigar was also observed in Romeremont. Epinow, we reported in our issue on Monday that a cigar-shaped meteor flying horizontally had been observed in the night on Saturday to Sunday above Contraville and Vitale by several trustworthy people. On this subject, one of our Epinow readers sends us a letter which confirms our information. Our occasional correspondence was returning from a party at Romeremont. On leaving the town, he and his companion suffered a breakdown of their motorcycle. My attention was suddenly drawn, he writes, by a luminous phenomenon in the sky. My companion also shared my experience. It was visible for eight to 10 seconds. It then disappeared as abruptly as it appeared. It looked like a cigar, or if you like, a record seen in perspective. The incandescent object was white at the front, followed by an apparent burst of red orange flame, tipped with a whitish luminous area. About a minute later, we heard a faint dull explosion. Whether it had anything to do with this phenomenon, I don't know. This phenomenon must be the one you are describing in today's issue, noted at Contraville. Thus, the information that we have given is with confidence because of several other matching testimonies. The Libertale de Lest had plenty of coverage regarding the strange object in its 12th August 1954 edition. A second piece was titled Epinow. He saw a mysterious cigar. This is what they wrote. One of our friends from La Val, Mr. Perrin, a farmer, had to get up to soothe his dogs who were barking continuously. To his great surprise, he saw in the sky a luminous craft in the shape of a large cigar. One which left behind it a sheaf of sparks. This mysterious contraption was going quickly in the direction of Breaire. So this week I was reading from Graham Rendlesburg, the French UFO wave of 1954.
