The 67-year-old is stepping down at the end of June 2025. He told the Board of Trustees this afternoon that he is leaving the university better than he found it just before he received a standing ovation from them. More than two dozen Wake County public schools are operating under a so-called fire watch. Inspectors found the fire alarms could no longer alert school staff when they needed maintenance. So that means that a staffer has to walk the building constantly looking for fires whenever the buildings are occupied.
