Sizzling summer heat returns today with a heat index up to about 110, but we finally have an extended period of relief. I'll let you know when coming up. The clubs came off at a little league state tournament in Wilson. WREL is getting to the bottom of what led to a fight between a coach and an umpire and the punishment. Also, students at Wake County Public Schools could soon be banned from using cell phones at school. We'll explain who's behind this proposal and why some object. Imagine watching this scene play out in front of you on the highway. A hit and run rollover crash will tell you where it happened and the condition of the driver. It is dangerously hot. Again, this afternoon, the heat index forecast up to 110 degrees. Good afternoon to you. I'm Jeff Hogan. And I'm Renee Chiu. Thanks for joining us. Peter L. Just can't cable is in the W.R.O. Severe Weather Center with how hot it is right now and when we'll get some relief. It's on the way. We actually have a stretch of 80s in the forecast to look forward to. 91 degrees in the triangle right now with a heat index of 102. We had some clouds earlier this morning, so these numbers aren't quite as bad as they were at this time. Yesterday, but the clouds are thinning out there, so the numbers should be jumping up. The heat index, as I mentioned, 102 in the triangle as well as South Hill. The worst heat index is Clinton, 88 degrees, but feeling like 104 there at this hour. We are under a heat advisory today for all of the viewing area here in Orange. That's where the heat index should be between 105 and 110 this afternoon. Notice the pink. That's the excessive heat warning toward the coast of Plain and the coast. We were under that yesterday a tear down in severity of the heat today, but still stay hydrated, limit your time outside. The heat index should be in the triple digits all the way through sunset. When you've got eight, nine hours in a row with the heat index over 100, it really adds up and heat exhaustion becomes more likely. We have a cold front on the way. The good news about this cold front is it gets stuck over North Carolina. That's going to lead to a lot more cloud cover, increasing rain chances. We still need the rain given the drought that we're in, but check out the temperatures. That's going to be best of all. We get four days in a row with high temperatures in the 80s, some much needed rain on the way. This is a big pattern change for us, and I'll let you know how much longer it could last, and detail rain and flooding threats coming up. Breaking right now in the WRIA Live Center, we have just learned that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be allowed to run for president in North Carolina, state elections officials voted to approve his political party for the 2024 ballot. The board also voted to reject Cornell West. He will not be allowed to run. RFK running could throw a wrench into the campaigns here for both Biden and Trump. North Carolina was one of the most closely divided states in the last presidential election. RFK Jr. is expected to pull support from both Trump and Biden. An umpire and a coach came to blows at a baseball game. This was no ordinary game. It was the state tournament for little league players. W.R.S. Eric Miller has the shocking video, and he joins us live in Wilson, where this fight happened over the weekend. Eric. Well, Jeff, that fight broke out last night right here at home plate near Wilson's Gillette baseball complex. This game, going from 12-year-old swinging a bat to grown men swinging their fists. Just take a look at this video right here. This was the fifth inning. This is a game between Cheriville and the Bull City little league out of Durham. A Cheriville coach approaches the home plate umpire. That umpire says the coach should be ejected for using profanity. The coach then shoves the umpire during the brawl that follows a second umpire gets involved with that home plate umpire swinging his mask as a weapon. Finally, you can see that umpire restrained on the ground after another coach gets involved. We've reached out to Wilson police here. They tell us officers did come out here last night, but no report was filed. We've reached out to both Cheriville as well as the town of Wilson to ask what if any disciplinary action might be taken against the coaches involved against the umpires as well. We're still waiting for those details. We'll bring you that information as soon as we get it. In Wilson, Eric Miller, W.R.A.L. News. It is night two of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The theme for the night make America safe. We expect to hear former President Donald Trump's proposals to bolster law enforcement and combat illicit drugs. That will be front and center. Trump's former primary rival, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, once called Trump a catastrophe. She's now expected to stress Trump's new theme of unity. Democrats held the news conference today. Milwaukee urging voters to make sure they choose a leader who will govern for all. In this moment in our democracy, please vote for decency and kindness and empathy and grace. Those are the best American values and the best American virtues. Listen to how candidates talk about the other side about Democrats, if they're a Republican or about Republicans knows if they're a Democrat. That will show you whether they're a leader that really can bring us together. And many more people, we will be speaking at the RNC over the next two days. You can find a full list of events on WORAIL.COM. Leaders in the DNC plan to formalize President Joe Biden's nomination by the end of the month, even though some Democrats remain split. Since May, President Biden has been set to be confirmed through a virtual roll call weeks before the Democratic National Convention in August. Under the party's rules, he can be replaced as a nominee only if he agrees to step aside and release his delegates. Meanwhile, the Chicago police say that they are well prepared to handle the upcoming convention next. We see things where we know we need to make adjustments or we need additional manpower. We will make those adjustments as soon as possible. We are concerned about everyone in the city, especially those around that venue, and we're going to make sure that we do everything that we can to protect everyone. While the Secret Service will be in charge of securing that area, Chicago's police superintendent says they're monitoring the situation. Commerce Secretary Michelle Baker Sanders said today she welcomes the company's renewed commitment to our state. Well, Murinaga's current site in Meben is on the southeast side of town, I-85, I-40. It started operations back in 2015. We'll have more about this economic news for Orange County in our news starting at 4. Today's your last chance to visit BU Cafe's Boxyard RTP location. During the comedy rock band's concert in Sydney, Australia, Black presented Kyle Gas with a birthday cake and told him to make a wish. Gas responded, "Don't miss Trump next time." United has reached out to Davis to apologize and has removed the flight attendant from duty while it investigates. Power lines were knocked down, homes were damaged, trees were toppled. The storm also triggered several tornado warnings throughout the eastern part of the state. Thousands of people are without power right now. Officials say the outage could last through today. Our planet is spinning slower. Our days are getting longer. Don't worry though. We won't have to add another hour to the day. Melting ice caps are causing longer days. A newly released study says it is the result of human caused climate change. The changes are small a few milliseconds a day. Still it could have an impact on technology that we rely on including GPS. Ice melting. We'll see it. Yeah. A warmer planet. Huge, huge concerns there. A lot of melting ice cream too. In this heat, meteorologist Kit Campbell and the WRS Center. I know ice cream places are busy though on days like today. Oh yeah, and I mean, didn't that picture the icy water? I was just ready to jump in after walking into work today. It is a scorching summer day. We did have some clouds earlier this morning that helped hold down temperatures a little bit but the humidity is way up there. A good day to head to the pool as long as you are staying hydrated drinking plenty of water. As we get into the afternoon, temperatures reach the upper 90s to near 100. And there will be a chance of a few pop up thunderstorms later on this afternoon and evening. But we have a major pattern change coming our way for the end of the week. And that really begins on Thursday. Rain chances start to go up. Temperatures start to go down. We need the rain. We need a break from the heat and we're going to get both with this pattern change. So let's talk about it. Here comes our next front. It's going to get stuck over North Carolina. It'll stall out and with it nearby it's going to develop a lot of clouds each day. That'll keep temperatures down and better rain chances each day as well. So let's track the arrival of the front on future counts. This is our in-house model here. During the day tomorrow we're likely to be dry early on. It's as we get into the afternoon and evening that we start to see thunderstorms blossoming on the radar. It's about a 50% chance. Some of those storms could actually linger past midnight. But I think for the most part we would be dry by Thursday morning as you're waking up. But here is the front. It's going to be right overhead by Thursday. And that is why the potential for flooding begins to ramp up on Thursday. If you see some flash flooding we're under the same risk level that we were last Friday when we saw the flooding. And this is heavy rain showing up here on Futurecast. Here's the front on Friday. It's still hanging out nearby. And so Friday we've got another decent chance for rain and storms. A lot of clouds and temperatures just in the mid 80s. If you need to get some yard work done this week keep in mind even though we have a pretty good chance for showers and storms many of the days. No day are we forecasting an all day type of washout rain. I would recommend trying to get it done as early as possible. That way if you get it done in the morning you can beat the heat and hopefully you can beat the rain chances as well. There will be a level one threat for severe storms tomorrow from the triangle north and west including Chatham County Rocky Mount. The threat here damaging wind gusts. Keep in mind the severe risk maps do not account for heavy rain risk or lightning risk. But both of those will also be concerns. And if we look look more detailed on our flooding threat it is going to be a more moderate threat both Thursday and Friday before backing off to a low in threat on Saturday. Let's take a look at today's W.R.A.L. Weatherwater photo. This is from Irwin yesterday evening at sunset. The ice crystals in the clouds really created a beautiful display a lot of texture in those clouds. So thank you for sharing those pictures with us. Over the next seven days we get a nice little break from the heat. It is still going to be humid outside. Low temperatures are in the 70s. High temperatures are in the 80s. A lot more clouds so hopefully if you need some fresh air but it's been too hot to get outside you can get out early in the morning. That is going to be my plan so I can finally take my dog Jazzy on some overdue dog walks. It's just been too hot out there especially with the pavement. Understood Kat thank you. On average a child dies every 10 days from heat stroke in a car and often there accidents. Coming up today at 5, 5 on your side looks into how these deaths keep happening. And the Fed may cut interest rates before inflation drops to its target level. Those are among today's business headlines with Maribel Abraham. The Fed doesn't plan to wait until inflation drops at 2% before cutting interest rates. Instead, policymakers are looking for greater confidence that pricing pressures will eventually decline to that level. This is according to Fed Chair Jerome Powell. The Fed's target has been to slow inflation to a 2% annual rate. It's now around 3%. At an event yesterday Powell said the Fed can move sooner to cut rates as it sees more good inflation data. And he added that lately there's been more positive data showing price pressures easing. Google's parent Alphabet is close to making its biggest acquisition ever. Covering Wake County, a group is making a new push today to ban cell phones inside Wake County public schools. They say phones are detrimental to students learning and their mental health. WRL's Laura Levine is at Wake County schools headquarters in Cary with concerns from parents. [MUSIC] We are here outside of Wake School headquarters where this is going to be a big talker today. Listen, if you have a smartphone, you probably get these notifications. Let me know how much screen time you use per week. For me, you can see it's social media. Well, these concerned parents save the percentage for kids as much higher, especially during school hours. So members of this group include a former councilwoman Nicole Stewart, a family doctors and others. They are expected to request a district wide ban at today's meeting. The group is worried about mental health and academic issues stemming from mobile device use. Several counties in North Carolina have already done this and feedback in those counties indicate students are paying more attention in class. Stewart says it's the constant attention and addiction they want to address. Constant interruption is a huge part of it, right? Like, we're all addicted to our funds at this point. But children being interrupted in school ruins their attention. It brings down their grades. It interrupts the teachers who are trying to learn on a constant basis. We can get into the social media aspect part in terms of how our children's mental health is suffering, especially young girls. Currently, Wake schools, let's individual schools determine cell phone policies and enforcement. Many schools already banned them from being used in classrooms. However, those policies differ from school to school. Meanwhile, today's meeting will begin at 530 and the district is not expected to take any action on it today. Laura Levine, WRL news and Carrie. There are growing concerns surrounding a local mental health hospital after five teenagers escaped. WRL investigates received inspections of Holly Hill Hospital, conducted right after the teens escaped back in March. Pages from the inspection report address violations to the protocols that ensure patients can't escape. The Department of Health and Human Services documents show there is no evidence. Exit doors were checked on 14 of 51 days leading up to and just after the escapes. They also state Holly Hill employee broke the rules by not having two members outside during fresh airtime leading to an escape that day. One teen says she was allowed to go to the bathroom and was able to slip away. It was easy. I was surprised how it could get out. As soon as I wanted the bathroom, it went in with nobody there trying to stop me. The documents also show at least one employee failed to check on the patient listed as an escape risk every 15 minutes. WRL investigates found employees were asked to under report escapes as well. Since these findings, Holly Hill outlined an improvement plan. Dina escaped after those plans were put in place. The Wake County Animal Center is overwhelmed with animals and they need your help. Not everyone knows where they stand with their romantic partner. In the dating world, there's a term for that. We're talking about situationships. Situationships can be a fun, low pressure way to date while remaining single. Signs of a situation ship can include inconsistent communication, lack of growth and minimal future planning. Clinical psychologists say they don't work for everyone because without clarity and consistency, you might feel anxious and confused. If you find yourself in a situation ship, you can take a pause and ask yourself, is this meeting my needs and creating joy? Or is it causing anxiety and confusion? Clear and open communication about your boundaries and expectations can help both parties to be on the same page. And here's hoping you will get on the same page. A recent survey found 30% of today's generation would prefer to be in a situation ship instead of a committed relationship. Psychologists believe online dating might play a role in this because it gives people the flexibility and freedom to meet several people at the same time. About one in five teens in the US said they rarely or never have the social or emotional support they need. Parents were nearly three times more likely to think they were providing that. The concord native took lessons at a small airport in Indiana Trail. And get this. He didn't set out to get his pilot's license. I never actually wanted to be a pilot at first. I always wanted to be a ground screw member. That would wand into planes or marshal them in. And then I got started to talk to a Delta pilot. And I started talking about flight school, and that's how I got into it. Think big. The City of Concord recognized Garner's achievements last week, presenting him within official proclamation. Crowd of people gathered in the lobby of a hospital in Maryland for a special retirement celebration. This commemoration wasn't for a doctor or a nurse. It was for a dog. Griffin, about 150 pounds of fluff and unconditional love. He's a therapy dog who's been bringing joy and comfort to patients and staff weekly for seven years. To see the difference he makes in the attitude of the people is incredible. I can't even describe it. It changes them completely from what they were before. That's what I really love about it. It really changes somebody's outlook for that day. They're both smiling there. Griffin, he's so chill. Look at him. Isn't the only therapy dog they're roaming the halls of that hospital? There are eight dogs bringing unconditional love to patients and staff. He's so chill, but when you see him next to one of the little kids, wow, he's just giant. But, oh, good work. Here's an important reminder about a road closure tonight. A part of the I-40 near US-70 in Wake County will be closed in both directions overnight. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins launched into space atop an enormous Saturn B rocket. Four days later, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to walk on another planetary body. You've seen the video and heard the audio enough to feel like I was there or, you know, alive then. Just watching that take off with the flames coming out of that rocket engine, that sort of feels like when you go outside. Yeah, pretty much. Can't gammals over in the WRS of air weather center. We keep looking at these heat index temperatures. I mean, triple digits for everyone. Triple digits this afternoon for everybody. So even if you're not there yet, you'll be pretty soon. Boy, it's steamy out there. It's not as hot at this hour as it was yesterday. And one of the reasons why we had a lot of cloud cover around early this morning. It was left over from a few of the storms last night, but it's still steamy. 102 is what it feels like at RDU. Feels like 108 right now in South Hill and Clinton and 104 in Southern Pines. Not a great afternoon to head out for your dog walk. You've got the dangerous heat during the early afternoon and then we've got a chance of a couple of thunderstorms. It's about a 30% chance through sunset. Later this evening would be your best shot once the sun sets. That's when the pavement will cool down a little bit. It won't be quite as hot out there. It's still very humid, but I think it's a quick in and out out there today. The good news is the summer heat is backing off here pretty soon. It's going to come with a lot of clouds, so it's not a sunny day with temperatures in the 80s, but we need a break from the heat and we need some rain and those are both coming in this pattern change. You got to get through tomorrow 97 and then we get a normal day on Thursday. 91 is our normal high this time of year before our stretch of 80s begins with highs in the mid to upper 80s. It's four days in a row at least and I was just looking at some of the new extended model data and there are signs this could last into early next week as well. Let's talk about why we get a break from the heat. So far we've had a big area of high pressure that's been extending over North Carolina and bringing us this dangerous heat. What we're going to see change is this big dip in the jet stream. We've got this upper level low that's going to sit here and it's going to do two things. It's going to steer in all this moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. So we've got a constant supply of moisture to develop more clouds and storms and keep temperatures down and that's the first thing it's going to do. The other thing it's going to do is out ahead of an upper level low you typically get a lot of lift in the atmosphere and that helps to generate rain and those clouds in the first place. So we get that steady flow moisture with the jet stream that you can see here and that's what's going to bring the chance for rain and it's that chance for rain and cloud that's going to hold temperatures back for us. 91 degrees outside today so far the high has been 93 at it. The sun set 831 this evening. Notice the haze and a lot of the upper level clouds in the area. That's what's helped us out so far in terms of temperatures. It's backing off a bit. Not much to see yet on the dual Doppler 5000 radar. I do think we'll see a couple pop up storms today but tomorrow's storm chances do climb a bit. We are dry through lunchtime tomorrow but once we get to the evening even during the afternoon it's only about a 30% chance of a storm. But by tomorrow evening especially for the evening commute we're looking at a better chance of rain and storms. Storm chances up to about 50% tomorrow and they keep going up from there Thursday. We've got a threat for flooding as well as Friday. Tomorrow instead of the flooding risk we actually have the threat for an isolated severe storm with some strong wind gusts. There's our stretch of the 80s on the horizon. It begins on Friday lasting into the start of next week with decent rain chances on the way. Cat, thanks.
