Live from WRL News, headquarters in Raleigh, your number one source for local news. WRL News, coverage you can cut off. A second fire is broken out at a Raleigh apartment complex behind me. Coming up the new details we just learned from the Raleigh Fire Department. A shooting and stabbing closed the road in Durham for several hours over nights. We'll tell you what we know about that investigation. And for the 3rd straight day, we're under heat alerts all across the board. We'll show you how high the heat's going to get. And when it finally backs off, coming up... Plus former President Donald Trump made his first public appearance since Saturday's assassination attempt. What we can expect for day two of the Republican National Convention after he announced his running mate. We'll hunt to get to on your Tuesday morning 8 o'clock now on Fox 50. Thanks for joining us. I'm Michelle Mcconnicky. And I'm Jeff Hogan. Thanks for spending the early part of your Tuesday here so we get things rolling. It's already hot out there. You know, kind of getting used to it though. Chris Michaels over in the WRS, Pennsylvania Weather Center right now with all those dates that are dotting the landscape for heat alerts. Exactly. And you see more and more of those taking up space on this graphic. We've had 11 of the past 27 days where heat alerts have been issued yesterday. We had that excessive heat warning. R.D.U. The heat index hit 112 right now already starting out quite toasty out there. You got the clouds over the horizon. Live look from our WRAL camera, Tower camera out of South Eastern Wake County. Right now it's 80 degrees and it's only 8 o'clock in the morning. 72 due point is at the top of the scale. It's really that area you can wear once again. That contributes to the heat index getting well above triple digits this afternoon. It's going to feel like 104 to 108. Wear yourself lucky if you see a late day shower or storm. It's going to be pretty isolated out there. But the heat risk continues to stay very high through Wednesday, Thursday the heat slowly backing off a little bit. High temperatures still near 90 and even that is going to feel like a relief. But a stormy pattern setting up here as we head into the later part of the week. Rounds of rain on the way localize flooding. I'll show you what this does for a cool down coming up in just a little bit. 10. So we continue to follow this crash that's happened on I 87 in those southbound lanes. Take a look at what I'm talking about. It's really beginning to clear up just a little bit. That congestion was building all the way back to window falls parkway just a little while ago. Let's take you outside and sure exactly what we're talking about here. You can't see the crash on this camera, but those are the southbound lanes moving away from us. But you can still see the congestion building as a result of that crash. So keep that in mind if you're heading out this morning. Elsewhere around the triangle we're also looking at this crash there in the Roseville area. It happened just about an hour ago. It's in Zebulun Road northbound near Highway 98. Lewisburg Road might be an option for you if you're running into this, but you can see the heavy backup that's causing right there in that area. Elsewhere we're seeing some backups on the belt line and I 40. Take a look at the delay times right now. It's going to take you about 10 minutes extra this morning, so keep that in mind if you're about to head out. Following breaking news this morning as crews are working to put out a fire at a building on Donald Ross drive in Raleigh for the second time now in 12 hours. Two firefighters were injured in yesterday's fire and WRL's Nick Pirlin is live at that scene right now. Nick, as those crews are working to figure out the cause of this fire. Jeff, that's right, but about 10 minutes ago we just learned new information. The Raleigh fire chief did confirm with us that nobody was hurt, which is good news, but still a lot of damage to these buildings behind me. I'm going to step out of the way just so you can get a better look. You can still see Raleigh fire department here working to put out the rest of this fire and you can see just damage to that building in front of me. It looks like the roof is caved in. We also know that there's about four or five for at least apartment complexes on the left that I'm seeing better melted due to this fire. Now, the fire department did say they're still not ready to call these buildings its total loss, but at this point in time, we're still working. Once we get more information, we'll be sure to update you. Live in Raleigh, Nick Pirlin, WRL news. More breaking news on a shooting and stabbing in Durham. It happened on North Alston Avenue near Liberty Street around two o'clock this morning. Video from the WRL breaking news tracker shows portions of both streets were closed for hours as police investigated there. We are working to learn how many people were involved and if police have any suspect information. The Republican National Convention resumes today. The focus for day two will shift to immigration opening day included the first public appearance for former president Donald Trump since he survived an attempted assassination and you can see his injured ear there all bandaged up. He was greeted with chance of fight from the crowd and Trump appeared alongside his new running mate, J.D. Vance Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. She spoke early in the night followed by Senator Tim Scott and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. President Trump is expected to speak on Thursday. And many more people will be speaking at the RNC over the next couple of days so you can find a full list of events on WRAL.com and coming up in 10 minutes we'll take a closer look at former President Trump's vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance. North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson spoke at the convention last night and he had this to say about the GOP nominee. Under President Trump the American dream was alive and well. Under President Trump there was hope and we need that now more than ever. For working people and seeing several lawmakers and governors spoke last night including South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin. And President Biden sat down with NBC's Lester Holt for a one-on-one interview last night as the RNC was happening. Here's his response when asked if he has confidence in the Secret Service. You have confidence in the Secret Service, do you feel safe? I feel safe with the Secret Service but look, and you saw that what we did see was the Secret Service who responded, risked their lives and responded. They're ready to give the lives to the President. The question is should they have anticipated what happened or should they have done what they needed to do to prevent this from happening? That's a question, that's an open question. Biden also said that it was a mistake to say he wanted to put a bullseye on Trump but argued that his rival's rhetoric is the real problem. And Democrats are planning to speak about Project 2025 and Milwaukee this morning. Project 2025 is a 900-page policy that was written by Trump allies in anticipation of a second term. The plan would dramatically overhaul the tax code and create strict abortion restrictions and change many government programs. Members of the DNC will talk about Project 2025 and its implications this morning at 9am. We're learning more about former President Trump's attempted assassination as the FBI says technicians are now working 24 hours a day on the shooter's cell phone and laptop. They gained access to Tom's Crook's phone yesterday. The House Oversight Committee has formally requested documents from the Secret Service as it investigates the assassination attempt. The committee plans to hold a meeting, a hearing, next Monday. Crook's former high school counselor told NBC he was "flabbergasted" it was him. The counselor says Crook's was quiet, intelligent, and never got a call from a teacher about behavior problems. Covering Wake County, your child's classroom may soon look a little different. A group is making a new push today to ban cell phones inside Wake County Public Schools. WRLL's Laura Levine joins us live from the Wake County Public School headquarters in Carey. And Laura, this proposal comes as some Raleigh leaders worry about cell phone use and its effect on mental health and academic issues. Yeah, Michelle, well, if you have a smartphone, you may get these notifications that tell you how much screen time you use per week. Well, these concerned parents say the percentage for children is much higher, especially during school hours. So let's take a look at this group as members that include former councilwoman Nicole Stewart, a family doctor, and several others. They are expected to request a district-wide ban at today's meeting. The group is worried about mental health and academic issues stemming from mobile device use. Several counties in North Carolina have already done this, and feedback in those counties indicate students are paying more attention in class. If you've got three kids who are on their phone in the classroom, it's distracting the class and those children's grades are going to suffer. So the best way to think about this is it's a collective action issue, and if we all do it together, we can all stand hard together, firm together as parents, and do the right thing for our kiddos. Currently Wake Schools lets individual schools determine cell phone policies and enforcement. Many schools ban cell phones from the classrooms, but the policies differ from school to school. The school board will meet here at 530, and they're not expected to take any action on this today. Lora Levine, WRL News, live and carry. New Title IX regulations will meet changes to Wake Health School policies on sex-based discrimination. Later today, the school board will consider several language changes. Those include clarifying that Title IX complaints don't have to be written down and updates to the district's investigative processes. The Biden administration has approved new rules implementing the law that go into effect August 1st. The law bans sex-based discrimination at educational institutions that receive federal funding. "Ten minutes after eight on your Tuesday, Football Hall of Famer, Terrell Davis says he was wrongfully removed from a flight over the weekend. Why he says the incident left him feeling humiliated and powerless." Plus, Amazon expected to bring in billions of dollars during Prime Day just ahead how you can keep your information safe from scam artists during the retailer's biggest event. "And consider yourself lucky if you get a cooling down port today, but there's more on the way later this week. I'll show you when the chance for flooding goes up and how much temperatures are going to drop. It's coming up in my full forecast." What's next? "813 at the time right now, so welcome you back on your Tuesday morning, already hot out there. Not a surprise. We're in the WRS severe weather center right now, can't catch a break, but we will in a couple of days." "Exactly, yeah. We've just got to be a little more patient. I know it's hard to do with how hot things have been over the past several weeks, but yet again, another heat advisories and effects for areas in the orange. Check out the purple, just east of us. It's another excessive heat warning where the heat index gets to 110 to 115, just brutal out there. You've got a limited amount of time to where you can exercise outside and it actually be safe to do so. Just by 11 a.m., temperature of 92 degrees, lunchtime temps 94 to 96, our third straight day of triple digit heat in the triangle. But again, you factor in that humidity and it just feels brutal out there from time to time. Here's a look at the heat index topping out at 106 in Raleigh, Fayetteville. The sand hill is going to be feeling like 110, Roxborough, not exactly much more comfortable your heat index today about 103. Fast forward to tomorrow. It's more of the same, just kind of groundhog day all over again. Heat index of 105 to 110 tomorrow, but you notice more of a storm icon there. Let's plan that out hour by hour for your Wednesday and notice that they're pretty isolated first thing. But as we head deeper into the afternoon, we've bumped those chances up to about 60%, and a couple of those could be on the strong side, especially near and north of the triangle. But the pattern does turn wetter as we head later in the week. This is a look at the flood risk. Remember last Friday, it was at that yellow elevated level. That's what we see again Thursday and this Friday in the sand hills before going down to a marginal level on Saturday. The reason being is we're just kind of caught in this repetitive pattern. I'm going to back up the view a little bit and you'll notice two things. These two big, blue H's high pressure, kind of sandwiching in that front where it just kind of remains stationary between Thursday and at least Sunday. So most forecast data hinting at two to four inches of rain, but here's what this does for us. And you'll notice what I'm talking about in the seven day forecast. We're looking at four straight days below 90 degrees. That hasn't happened since May the 27th until June, the third. So we kind of have our own Amazon Prime Day deal going on where it's a 15% discount on temperatures later this week. All right, check it out 100 the high today, 97 tomorrow in the triangle. You're looking at a high of 91 Thursday. Keep in mind the humidity, the heat index is going to be about 100 to 105. There's that little bit of relief that we see later this week. It starts with Friday, high temperature of about 85 degrees, but you also notice storm chances coming up as that front gets closer to us. Highs in the eighties, they're at least early next week. Ken. All right, Chris. We got some good news with folks coming in from night deal that crash. We've been telling you about an I 87 cleared. You can see those southbound lanes moving along nicely, delay free at this time. I was right around the triangle this one that crash just happened as I was walking out of the W.R. traffic center, give me a few minutes. I'll figure out exactly what's going on and let you know if it's affecting your morning commute at all. We all can still continue to monitor this crash that's just cleared again as it was walking from the W.R. traffic center. You can see the lingering delays along highway 98. I was telling folks to use Lewisburg road as an alternate route, but clearly that crash is not happening there anymore. And that's just a lingering delay. So just keep that in mind. If you're about to head out, I would still use Lewisburg road because you're still seeing red showing up on the map this morning. As far around the triangle, you see the bulk line this morning and I-40 a minute ago, the drive time from I 440 to US one was up to nine minutes. It's getting a little better down to three minutes. If you're trying to get from Wade Avenue to I-540 this morning, it's down to two minutes. So keep that in mind. You're about to head out. Nearly 145,000 people in Texas are still without power more than a week after a barrel ripped through that state. The energy company in the city says 14,000 crew members are working 16-hour shifts to restore power for families across the area. Texas' Public Utilities Commission has initiated an investigation into the company's response. The governor threatened to issue an executive order to force the company to improve the reliability of its equipment. A quiet Pennsylvania neighborhood is now the center of a federal investigation after the assassination attempt to former President Donald Trump. People who live in the Bethel Park suburb near Pittsburgh are speaking out about the gunman Thomas Crooks. FBI agents were seen entering Crooks home yesterday. His neighbor, Liam Campbell, says Crooks mostly kept to himself. He says he just was so surprised to learn of this shooting. I was shocked because knowing that he lived so close to me that he did something like that. He was just quiet and I've never noticed anything off. I mean, he was just a normal kid to me walking around the neighborhood. I mean, he was just a bit odd, that's all. The FBI says Crooks social media profile contained no threatening language and they haven't found any history of mental health issues. They say Crooks acted alone and they have yet to identify a motive. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will receive Secret Service Protection according to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. It comes at the direction of President Biden as a result of the shooting at a Trump rally. Kennedy's father, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, as well as his uncle, President John Kennedy, were assassinated less than five years apart. In a post shared to ex, RFK Jr. thanked the president for granting him Secret Service Protection. And pro-football Hall of Famer, Terrell Davis, says he was wrongfully removed from a United Airlines plane. It happened on Saturday on a flight from Denver to California. Davis says he tapped a flight attendant's arm to ask for a cup of ice, and he says the flight attendant shouted, "Don't hit me" in response. After the plane landed, Davis says he was taken off the plane in handcuffs by the FBI. The former Denver Bronco is running back, said the incident has left him feeling humiliated, embarrassed, powerless, and angry. United Airlines has since removed the flight attendant from duty while the airline reviews the incident. A big question for the summer Olympics. How will the water quality be for the river Senate will be safe to hold Olympic events in the water? Paris authorities say they will be able to have those events take place. In fact, tomorrow the mayor of Paris and to other city officials say they will swim in the Senn River to show that it's safe. The water is currently being tested daily at various locations around Paris to check its levels of E. coli. It has a history of pollution from sewage overflows, especially during heavy periods of rain. If bacteria levels get too high during the Olympics, the triathlon would then drop the swimming portion and then the marathon swimming competition will then be moved to an arena. Verizon is facing a multi-billion dollar lawsuit over copyright infringement. The music group Warner Music and Sony Music all filed a $2.6 billion lawsuit against the company Friday. They claim Verizon ignored customers' copyright violations for profit. All three labels say they have sent nearly 350,000 infringement notices to the wireless company since 2020. The record labels say they are entitled to nearly $150,000 per violation. Prime Day kicks off today and if you're planning to be online hunting for those deep discounts, watch out for scams. Five on your sides, Keely Arthur shows us the pitfalls to watch out for while you shop, and after. A matrix of robots we threw one another, delivering purchased products to warehouse workers who package, sort, and ship. So now they're delivering them to our customers. That's how your same-day delivery Amazon package gets made at this Durham warehouse. And on Prime Day, things will get even busier. We deliver for our customers about the same amount of packages when it comes to Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and then the week leading up to Christmas. It's also Christmas in July for scammers, because it's not just Amazon, Walmart just did their deals. Target had Circle Week and other retailers are putting on their best sales to compete. Whenever there's a time of the year, when there are a lot of sales, we always recommend that people do their research. The Better Business Bureau is warning people to be on high alert right now. If you're buying from Amazon, look into the actual seller of the product and save any information that you can. If you get that sketchy text that your package is stuck in the warehouse and you need to click a link to update your info, don't. The fake package delivery scams, like that happens all the time still. You get them, I get them, and that's something to look out for after the sales are over too. Remember, social media ads aren't always trustworthy and beware of look alike websites. At first glance, it might look like the real thing, but once you, you know, take a second and dig a little deeper, the links on the web page don't work like they should, the URL looks fishy, or it's like a weird combination of numbers and letters. Again, do not click on any links that are in unsolicited messages. And if you want to make a purchase, you can do it, but try to pay with a credit card that's going to offer you way more protections than a debit card or payment app will. Keeley Arthur, five on your side. Students in Way County could soon be banned from using cell phones in schools. Why parents say the ban is needed to help students focus? Plus, the mother faces charges for leaving her two children in a hot car. Why she says the charges are unnecessary. What's next? As you get into your cartoon to WRL news plus on your radio in Raleigh on 99.3 FM, in Durham 96.5 FM at everywhere on 101.5 HD 3. Good morning. Happy Tuesday. Time now is 826. I'm Michelle McConnicky, meteorologist Chris Michaels, checking in on our temperatures right now and how hot we're going to get, Chris. It's already starting out warm there, Michelle. Right now it's 80 in Durham and Raleigh, Fayetteville 78, hoping that the clouds can kind of bell things out a little bit. It doesn't look like that's going to happen. Another heat advisory and effects for the entire area. That's what you see in the orange is the heat index, peaks between 105 and 110. That advisory, by the way, from noon until eight. You can see, once again, we're forecasting triple digit heat today. Just shy of that tomorrow, Thursday, feeling like triple digits. We'll show you when there's a break in the action coming up, Ken. We're all looking forward to that break. Quick check of your traffic this morning. We're seeing really the congestion picking up on the north side of the boat line. And really, truly, that north side is just that one lane and getting on to Wade Avenue that spits onto I-40 westbound. The south side of the boat line, we're seeing some break tapping going on as well. I'm going to keep an eye on that to make sure that doesn't affect your commute to badly this morning. We're seeing some break tapping going on in the US one, those northland lanes coming in from more county. I'll keep an eye on that for you and have an update for you over in Fox 50. Thanks, Ken. Breaking news. Crews have put out a fire at a building on Donald Ross drive in Raleigh. For the second time in 12 hours, the fire broke out this morning around 6 a.m. You can see the damage left behind after yesterday's fire. Luckily, nobody was hurt, investigators are working to learn the cause of this fire. And a person is in custody after stabbing a man in Durham overnight. It happened on North Alston Avenue near Liberty Street around 2 a.m. The road was closed for hours. The victim is expected to be okay. We are working to learn what charges the suspect is facing. Next on Fox 50, why parents in Wade County are pushing to ban cell phones in the classroom. And up next on today, how to start every day empowered. What's next at Moss Adams? Now breaking news from WRAL, coverage you can count on. A second fire at this building behind me coming up will show you what crews are working to put out. The person is heard after a stabbing in Durham, what we know about this investigation. And for the third day in a row, our area is under a heat advisory, we'll show you how long this intense heat is going to last and how much rain we're going to see coming up. Should cell phones be banned from school campuses across Wake County, that's the proposal that a group of Raleigh leaders have for Wake School leaders today. We're diving deep into this proposal and hearing their concern. 830 is the time right now, we'll bring you inside the WRAL studios here and Chris just mentioned the third day in a row, it feels like a third week in the row with the hanging on of this. I'm Jeff Hogan. And I'm Michelle McConnicky. It's like never ending heat, it's crazy, it's cool in studio but outside, not feeling too good right now. And it's only going to get worse meteorologist Chris Michael shows us the chores, the outdoor chores, you know, where you should do it, not this afternoon. And I feel like we've just been repeating ourselves every day, it's only going to get worse, right? Start out this morning, probably the best time if you have the chance to get outside and take care of some of those chores. Midday is iffy just because we've kind of gotten used to this sort of heat, but it gets dangerous by the afternoon as we see that heat index getting well into the triple digits. Live look at downtown Apex where things are bustling, right now the heat index is 84. Notice by 11 a.m. and by lunchtime it gets closer to triple digits out there and well exceeds that heading into the afternoon. Only thing that could bail us out in the 11th hours, maybe some clouds coming in from the north and west. You see that near Danville and Greensboro, so we'll keep tabs on that regardless. Very sticky day. You see the heat risk is at that extreme level like it was yesterday, but it gradually goes down here as we head later in the week and into the weekend. That is as rain chances come up. This system just doesn't really move and it's going to pour rain on us at times late this week into the weekend. I'm going to show you how much rain we expect and how much things cool off coming up in just a bit, Ken. All right, Chris, we look forward to that checking your commute this morning. Boy, things have definitely picked up all along a major thoroughfurs this morning. We're talking the Beltline I 540. Even over in Durham, you see the I 885 in both directions this morning. Just a minor disabled vehicle to tell you about this Creedmoor road in the northbound lanes, not far from Millbrook Road. A little while ago, that was causing some bumper to bumper traffic, but right now you see it's clearing up and probably that disabled vehicle is off to the side of the road. So just keep that in mind if you have to navigate that section of the area. Well, elsewhere around the triangle, let's take you outside and show you what's going on with the Beltline. This is the northern side of the Beltline. That's the troubled spot. That one lane right there, people are trying to get onto Wade Avenue and eventually onto I 40 westbound. It's just one lane. So that's why you're seeing the red showing up there on the north side of the Beltline. Just on the south side, you can see, well, this is an entertaining sign. The westbound lanes coming toward us, really moving this morning. We've been looking at those drive times on I 40 in terms of delay. Really, it's really come down to like four minutes, you're trying to get the Beltline to yours one. But that Wade Avenue to I 540, just adding about four minutes to your commute this morning. Thanks Ken. Breaking news, a fire broke out at a building on Donald Ross Drive in Raleigh for the second time and 12 hours, crews were able to put out the fire about 30 minutes ago and WRL's Nick Perlin is live at the scene right now. Nick, this was a huge scene earlier. That's right. Obviously very tame. Now we do know Red Cross is here to help people whose complexes were damaged. But I want to get out of the way just to show you that damage and you can see that building straight ahead. It looks as though the roof caved in during that fire and a little bit to the left. You can see some of those apartment complexes on the side badly damaged in this fire. Now, the good news from Raleigh Fire Department is we did learn that nobody was hurt in this fire, but we're still trying to find out what exactly caused this fire. And they're still working right now to figure out if those buildings are a total loss. They're still not sure at this point in time, but still a very difficult situation with two fires happening here within the span of 12 hours, we're going to keep working to find out more information on what caused these fires. Once we have that information, we'll be sure to update you. Live in Raleigh, Nick Perlin, WRL News. Breaking news. We're following this morning. A person has been arrested after stabbing a man in Durham. It happened on North Austin Avenue near Liberty Street around 2 a.m. Video from the WRL Breaking News Tracker shows portions of both streets closed for hours as police investigated. The man who was stabbed is expected to be okay. We're working to learn what charges are waiting for the man arrested. Second day of the Republican National Convention gets underway this morning, and the theme of today's event will be Make America Safe Once Again. Last night, Donald Trump made his first public appearance since the assassination attempt on him Saturday. You see his injured ear, he's got that bandage on it. He was greeted with chance of fight from the crowd. Trump appeared alongside his new running mate, J.D. Vance. Michael and Marjorie Taylor Greene spoke early in the night, followed by Senator Tim Scott and Virginia Governor Glenn Yunken. Melania Trump did not attend yesterday's event, but is expected to be at the RNC later this week. Many more people will be speaking at the RNC over the next two days. You can find a full list of events at WRL.com. Coming up in 10 minutes, we'll take a closer look at former President Trump's vice presidential pick, J.D. Vance. Meanwhile, President Biden sat down with NBC's Lester Holt for a one-on-one interview. Who do you listen to on deeply personal issues, like the decisions whether to stay in the race or not? The, look, I've been doing this a long time. The idea that I'm the old guy, I am, I'm old, but I'm only three years older than Trump, number one. And number two, my mental acuity's been pretty damn good. I've gotten more done than any President has in a long, long time and three and a half years. Why did the press ever talk about that? Biden's interview is the latest in a series of events, rallies, and interviews he's done since his bad performance during his debate with former President Trump. When asked if Biden feels safe with a secret service, he said yes. And more questions remain in the aftermath of the attempt to a former President Trump's life. The guy says technicians are working 24 hours a day on the shooter's cell phone and laptop. They gained access to Thomas Crook's phone yesterday. Crook's high school counselor told NBC he was, quote, "flapper gassed" and it was him. The counselor says Crook's was quiet, intelligent, and he never got a call from a teacher about any behavior problems. Trump's running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, says that he is calling for a full-scale investigation into the assassination attempt Vance told that to Fox News last night. Covering Wake County, pretty soon your kids may not be able to bring their cell phones to school. A group of parents plans to request that ban at the school board meeting today. They believe the ban could help improve mental health issues, depression, even sleeping problems. W.R.O.'s Laura Levine is at Wake County School's headquarters in Cary with these parents concerns. We are here outside of Wake School headquarters where this is going to be a big talker today. Listen, if you have a smartphone, you probably get these notifications letting you know how much screen time you use per week. For me, you can see it's social media. Well, these concerned parents save the percentage for kids as much higher, especially during school hours. So members of this group include a former councilwoman, Nicole Stewart, a family doctor's and others. They are expected to request a district-wide ban at today's meeting. The group is worried about mental health and academic issues stemming from mobile device use. Several counties in North Carolina have already done this, and feedback in those counties indicate students are paying more attention in class. Stewart says it's the constant attention and addiction they want to address. Constant interruption is a huge part of it, right, like we're all addicted to our funds at this point. But children being interrupted in school ruins their attention. It brings down their grades, interrupts the teachers who are trying to learn on a constant basis. We can get into the social media aspect part in terms of how our children's mental health is suffering, especially young girls. Currently, Wake Schools lets individual schools determine cell phone policies and enforcement. Many schools already ban them from being used in classrooms. However, those policies differ from school to school. Meanwhile, today's meeting will begin at 530, and the district is not expected to take any action on it today. Lorely Veeam, WRL News in Kerry. A mother in Wake County is facing child abuse charges after leaving her kids in a hot car. Sherry Price says she turned the car off, but left the windows down while she let her one-year-old and six-year-old children sleep. She says this happened during a 15-minute stop at a TJ Maxx in Fuqua, Varena. But police say they found her about 40 minutes after security cameras showed her entering that store. Price tells WRL that she believes the charges are unnecessary. "I feel like the child abuse charge was over the top, but it was, I don't feel like I could not tell if because it makes me feel like I'm harming my kids when they were unmoored. It was absolutely nothing wrong with her." "Does she only have the two kids?" Price's mom says the kids are okay, and she's keeping them, for now. A Duke emergency physician says kids are not as good as regulating their body temperatures as adults. She says your body can start shutting down if you overheat. "This morning, the state board of elections could decide the fate of two potential candidates for president. Cornell West and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are asking to be on the ballot in North Carolina this year. The elections board has so far resisted them. That decision divided the board right along political lines. Republicans wanted them on the ballot, but the board's Democratic majority delayed the decision. Poll show Kennedy and West could cut into Biden's support if they're allowed on the ballot. President Trump's board is expected to vote this morning on whether to allow them. Democrats are planning to speak about Project 2025 in Milwaukee this morning. Project 2025 is a 900-page policy written by Trump allies in anticipation of a second term. The plan would dramatically overhaul the tax code and create strict abortion restrictions and change many government programs. Members of the DNC will talk about Project 2025 and its implications this morning at 9am. Kennedy people are talking about the national anthem during Major League Baseball's home-run Derby. Why the performance had many people turning their heads? "Turn on the channel, maybe, too. Plus, one of the Netflix hit series is almost done filming. We are getting a behind-the-scenes look at the final season of Stranger Things." News, sun is shining, it's going to be hot today, probably a really good day to get to the beach. Meteorologist Chris Michaels showing us that we have a heat advisory again today. This is never-ending, it feels like. It seems like, yeah, and I'd like to be at rights filled beach too, but they're under an excessive heat warning, so you really can't escape the heat across North Carolina right now. Notice that heat advisory from noon until 8 p.m. The feels like reaching 105 to 110, yet again, the third straight day that we've had these sort of heat alerts in effect. Live look at the W.R.E.L. Gardens, lots of sunshine and apex, same for Chapel Hill, and outside our newsroom in Fayetteville. Right now, a lot of us starting in the upper 70s and lower 80s add the humidity to that and you want to get in the pool. I think today is a nice day to do that if you have the day off with the kids. Temperatures reaching triple digits, once again, only thing that may prevent that is some cloud cover from the West. Something we'll track closely here in the W.R.E.L. Severe Weather Center. Something we've gotten used to, it's been the hottest summer on record so far in Raleigh and really across the state, it's been an exceptionally hot summer. We've got more details on this and how it affects you right now on W.R.E.L. dot com. Heading into tomorrow, not much relief, still in that major heat risk category by Thursday slowly starts to back down. It's a process and the process includes this front coming in from the West. Today, a few stray showers and storms will call it about a 30 percent chance. While you're self-lucky, if you get under one of those cooling downpours, once that front gets closer to us, it takes the heat, it takes the humidity, rings it out like a wet towel so we see the increased chance for showers and storms tomorrow. Coming in out of the West, mostly after 2 or 3 p.m. and a couple of those could be on the strong side, especially from the triangle northward, then that front camps out with us and it delivers quite a bit of rain. This is the cumulative rain between mid-week heading into the weekend, most forecast models showing at least two inches. Reason being, is this system just camps out? It's being blocked by two areas of high pressure. So that pattern is going to remain stagnant for us, which means it's a wetter pattern, but it also means a longer break from the intense heat. We actually have four straight days below 90 degrees for the first time since late May, early June. And you see that here in the seven-day forecast. So just got to get through today and tomorrow before things gradually start to improve for us. It's a high temperature Thursday, 91 degrees, still humid with a heat index of about 100. But there you go, rising rain chances, dropping temperatures from Friday through Monday. Yeah, that's going to be nice. Thanks, Chris. Well, people who attended the Trump rally in Pennsylvania are still processing what happened on Saturday. Lynne Piawargic and her daughter Dee were among the thousands at the rally. They were seated eight rows behind the podium when they heard the gunshots. This is video of Dee, that she shot of the Secret Service escorting former President Trump out of the rally. And in NBC, footage, Lynne can be seen in the background there. Her husband saw her on TV himself and asked why she was not ducking down. There were people laying where our feet go, and, you know, we were crowded in there. So I had the gentleman next to me laying on the ground. I had the lady next to me laying on the ground. So there was nowhere for me to lay. Both women say they're still trying to wrap their heads around this moment in history. A federal judge has dismissed the classified documents case against Donald Trump, but it's already being appealed. Judge Alien Cannon said the appointment of the special counsel in this case, who was Jack Smith, violated the Constitution. She used an argument laid out by the conservative Justice Clarence Thomas in a recent Supreme Court ruling. Smith had charged the former President of mishandling top secret documents after leaving the White House. Last night, a spokesman for the special counsel's office said the Justice Department has approved plans to appeal. Trump picked Ohio Senator J.D. Vance to be his new running mate. Vance is 18 months into his first term as U.S. Senator. He was elected in 2022. He's a military veteran who is deployed to Iraq. He went to Yale Law School, wrote a best-selling memoir, then set his sights on politics. Vance is largely aligned with Trump's political beliefs, like opposing abortion rights and aid for Ukraine. Last night, the Biden campaign blasted the nomination, releasing a statement that reads in part, "Donald Trump picked J.D. Vance as his running mate because Vance will do what Mike Pence wouldn't do on January 6th, bend over backwards to enable Trump and his extreme MAGA agenda. If they win in November, Vance would be the third youngest vice president in history." As Republicans gain momentum with their convention this week, the Democrats are gearing up for a bruising battle in November and they're putting money toward that effort new this morning, the Democratic National Committee announcing it is pouring $15 million into the party's efforts in seven battleground states. North Carolina is one of those states that they see as a battleground state. Others include Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The DNC chair says this is the largest ever investment made to battleground states in order to boost the Biden-Harris ticket. Today's your last chance to visit BU Cafe's Boxyard RTP location. The Durham Coffee Staple is closing that location later today. This comes less than a month after BU closed its longtime brick and mortar location on Main Street in Durham. The company says the decision was necessary as they continued to restructure after the pandemic. Today marks 25 years since the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. on July 16, 1999, a plane piloted by Kennedy crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard, killing him as well as his wife Carolyn Bissette Kennedy and his sister-in-law. Growing up in a spotlight, JFK Jr. was born just days after his father was elected president. The American people watched closely as he grew up and became a lawyer and started a political magazine. "The performance of the National Anthem at the Home Run Derby last night has a lot of folks talking, not in a good way. It was performed by Grammy nominated country singer-songwriter Ingrid Andres. Here's part of it." "That's all we could bear to make you listen to there. Andres is being heavily criticized right now for that rendition right there. The 32-year-old appeared to have some trouble hitting several notes. Some are calling her rendition reminiscent of Fergie's iconic version at the 2019 NBA All-Star game. Rosie O'Donnell also comes to mind with that going back further. Los Angeles Dodgers, Hall Fielder Tapskar, Hernandez is the 2024 Major League Baseball Home Run champ. Hernandez hit his 14 home runs in the final round, edging out Kansas City Royal shortstop Bobby Witt who had 13 home runs and on his last swing hit the top of the centerfield wall. Almost tied it. He is the first Dodger to ever win the Derby. Major League Baseball's All-Star weekend concludes tonight with the All-Star game between the National League and the American League. You can watch that on Fox 50 tonight at eight o'clock." "Hopefully the National Anthem will be better tonight."
