Much of the focus this morning is on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, the investigation into the shooting and security. And we're under a heated advisory for today. It's going to feel like up to 110 in our viewing area will have several days in a row like this before a break in the heat is coming our way. Plus President Biden addresses the nation from the Oval Office. We cannot, we must not, go down this road in America. But he had to say to the country in the midst of concerns over political violence. North Carolina delegates and lawmakers have traveled to Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention. We're hearing reaction from them and how they say the tone has shifted. Good morning everyone. It is six o'clock. Former President Donald Trump is waking up in Milwaukee this morning, the Republican National Convention starting today. It is full steam ahead. Thanks for joining us. We're nearly two. And I'm Jeff Hogan. It is good to have you along here spending the early part of our Monday together here. Hopefully as people get back to work, back to school, back to normal after what a weekend it was. Elizabeth Gardner and the WRL severe weather center, we're back to that heat again for sure. And this is starting to feel normal. I've got some statistics about how close we are to passing the average in terms of our heat advisories coming up. So we do have a heat advisory in effect again for today. We'll see it tomorrow as well. We hit 100 yesterday. We'll hit 100 today. But it'll feel more like 110 and counties to our east are an excessive heat warning. It'll feel like 100 or 102 by lunchtime and then 108 to 110 at the hottest part of the day, mid to late afternoon. But even at eight o'clock, if you were thinking about, you know, walking the dog or getting outside, it's still going to feel like around 100, even at eight o'clock. Here's a look at RDU. Clear skies looking beautiful out there right now, but it's definitely warm and sticky. 78 is the temperature. The 2.73, which is very muggy temperatures out across the area, mainly mid to upper 70s, but it is 70 right now in Roxbury. We do have a small chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. It's a 20% chance that chance goes way up toward the end of the week as our temperatures begin to drop. But we still have to deal with some excessive heat over the next couple of days. I'll show you what it will feel like through Wednesday. Coming up, Ken. Well, it's about the 601 weather and traffic every 10 minutes to make sure you know exactly what to expect when you head out this morning. Right now, we're looking at a trouble free at all our major thoroughfares, all delay free this morning in Durham and Chapel Hill, simply as well. Let's take you outside and show you what's going on in I-40 and Airport Boulevard. I know many of you have early morning flights. This is exactly what you want to see this morning. All lanes are delayed free this morning on I-40. Just two days now after the assassination attempt to former President Donald Trump and his party will be coming together today in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. It's a live look right now at the venue where security will certainly be tight. Here's where the investigation stands right now. The latest this morning, the FBI is working to gain access to the gunman's phone as they work to figure out a motive behind Saturday shooting. We've also learned the shooter was a member of a sports club in Pennsylvania. That club's attorney says the facility has a rifle range of 200 yards and the Secret Service faces serious questions this morning. Still unclear how and why they left the rooftop where the shooter was uncovered after identifying it as a vulnerability. We have team coverage for you this morning. State lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are responding to what happened. Plus what you can expect today at the Republican National Convention. Michelle McConaughey is following these developments in the W-R-A-Lives Center. Yeah, today we're going to get an updated shooting on the shooting later today. President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, they did get an updated briefing at the White House yesterday. We're learning that from the Wall Street Journal this morning. Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Ray were among the officials they are at the briefing. The White House did say that Biden is scheduled to be delivering remarks at 1.30 p.m. today. We're also learning this morning that Biden did speak with former President Trump last night. We'll have more on that coming up in just a few minutes. The former president Trump is already in Milwaukee ahead of the convention. He was seen getting off his plane last night, less than 24 hours after surviving that assassination attempt. In a statement on social media, Trump says he considered delaying his trip to Wisconsin for a few days. But he says ultimately he couldn't allow a potential assassin to change his schedule. Trump is not expected to speak until Thursday, which is the last day of the convention. North Carolina lawmakers are asking for peace heading into this critical moment in the presidential campaign. W.R.S. Laura Levine joins us live from the legislative building in Raleigh with their concerns. Laura. For now, good morning, lawmakers, North Carolina delegates are calling this situation a wake-up call. We know nearly 2,400 delegates from across the country are coming together for this Republican National Convention this week in Wisconsin to formally offer President Trump the Republican Party's nomination, however, and we know a lot of them are North Carolina lawmakers. As we mentioned, delegates tell us that this year's convention in Milwaukee has significantly heightened security compared to previous years. However, that's not the only thing that has changed. The tone has also shifted. Some North Carolina delegates are energized and motivated. Others confident political rhetoric will calm down moving forward. I think you're going to see our delegates are more determined than ever to be there. We want to show the world that there's a sense of strength and that we can't back down. I think we pray about it. I think there's been more prayers lifted up for politics and politicians in this country over the last 24 hours than probably any time in our history. So we will continue to monitor the events happening at the convention this week, of course, with everything kicking off this morning, and we're also going to be checking in with those lawmakers and North Carolina delegates out there to continue to get some of their reaction. Lora Veeam, WREO News, live in Raleigh. President Biden is calling for unity after the gunman tried to kill Trump in an address from the Oval Office last night. He expressed support for Donald Trump's family, and he called on the country to, quote, "lower the temperature in our politics." You know, the political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that. Yes, we have deeply felt strong disagreements. The stakes in this election are enormously high. The president ended by calling on Americans to unite as one nation despite differing political views. Moments before shots were fired at Trump's campaign rally, a witness says he saw a gunman moving from roof to roof. I was up at the fence line, saw the guy move from roof to roof, talked, told an officer that he was on the roof. NBC authorities say Secret Service agents killed the gunman. NBC News reported that the rooftop where the gunman was identified was identified by the Secret Service as a potential vulnerability in the days before the event. And NBC News has learned from two sources that the rooftop from where the gunman opened fire at the rally was identified by Secret Service as a potential vulnerability days before. So take a look at this map of the shooting scene in Butler, about 35 miles north of Pittsburgh. The rally took place on the grounds of the Butler Farm Show, and you can see where the stage was set up, and on the roof of the building, where the Secret Service had snipers, they had a pretty good vantage point. And the gunman managed to get to the roof of an adjacent building. It's about 400 feet from the stage where Trump was speaking. Investigators are digging into the plan and response from Secret Service during the assassination attempt, and critics of the Secret Service actions say security planning at Trump's rally was poor. WRIL spoke to former FBI assistant director Chris Swecker about the Secret Service's response in the moments those shots began to fire. It took two minutes to get him off the podium, two full minutes I ticked it off. And then he stood up, and his face was showing, and his head was showing, and he pumped his fist. Great moment, he seized the moment for sure, but if they're a secondary shooter, he would have been gone. The FBI is leading an investigation into the Secret Service's actions. The head of the Secret Service is also expected to testify at a hearing with the House Committee on oversight and accountability that's happening one week from today. We are learning more about the man killed during the shooting at the rally. Corey Comprator was a husband and a father of two girls. He was also a firefighter. Pennsylvania's governor says Comprator was at the rally with his family. He said he shielded his family when shots rang out and died a hero. The firefighter worked with the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Department. In a statement on Facebook, the department said Corey will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Corey rest easy, brother, and we will take it from here. 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhagen were also injured. They are in critical condition. Milwaukee is praying for the victims of the attempted assassination of former President Trump. People there for the Republican National Convention held this vigil last night for the man killed in the shooting and the three others injured, including the former president. For more from security experts on the investigation and how to prevent this from happening again, go to www.wrail.com or our YouTube page. We also have information online about protests expected at the convention and a timeline of the assassination attempt. Other important news we're following for you this Monday. Summer break has come to an end for Cumberland County year-round students. About 15 school buses are expected to return to the roads this morning, bringing kids back to school there. Cumberland County's Board of Education made an agreement with local law enforcement last week to supply school resource and traffic control officers to schools. Now, each municipality will have their own officers as SROs, with unincorporated areas being covered by the sheriff's office, who confirmed they are ready to serve year-round schools in the county. During Wake County, City of Raleigh Water will close a section of Garner Road to eastbound traffic while they work on sewer repairs today. Garner Road will be closed from new ran road to Jones Sausage Road. This map shows the detour information so you can get around that construction. Expect traffic delays in that area around the area and Raleigh Water also says customers locally should not be experiencing any service interruption. Garner is estimated to take about two months. Today we'll kick off what will now be a very different Republican National Convention after the attempted assassination of Trump, how police are planning to protect the people who attend the convention. Plus, we'll explain the role local law enforcement plays in keeping presidents and candidates safe and a look at how they are preparing. We could break our record high today, we'll hit 100 again just like we did yesterday and we do have a heat advisory that's in effect will likely see another one tomorrow. But big changes come toward the end of the week, I'll show you what's going to bring us to cooler temperatures. It's going to feel like 105 to 110 in our viewing area and then the purple area is an excessive heat warning where it could feel like up to 115 that is just east of our viewing area. At lunchtime, it'll already feel like around 100 and feeling like more like 110 as we get into the afternoon. Very hot conditions coming our way. We take a look at what's happening across our area and we see partly cloudy skies, town by town. Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s to around 80 degrees. If you're considering doing any exercise outside, you need to get it done right now because even the evening hours, look at that, 94 at 7 o'clock and the heat index will still be in the triple digit. So planning your workout, get it done early before it gets too hot. Starting now in the WRL traffic center, we're noticing a major slowdown there on highway 540. That's a triangle expressway. We're working to find out exactly what's going on, but give me about 10 minutes. I'll let you know what's going on there. Elsewhere around the triangle, all the major routes that delay free this morning, which is what you want to hear. If the belt line is part of your morning commute this morning, there's our camera at I440 and Ridge Road traffic flowing nicely in both directions. Even looking live at Milwaukee right now, where the RNC is set to begin today, former President Donald Trump told the Washington Examiner he has rewritten the speech he was set to deliver at the Republican National Convention on Thursday after he was almost killed by a gunman. In that interview, he says he will call for unity. Coming up at 6.30, what President Biden had to say from the Oval Office last night and the federal investigations that are intensifying this morning. The Republican National Convention is scheduled to go on his planned tight security was seen around Pfizer forum in Milwaukee yesterday, which will host tens of thousands of people this week. Security fencing is in place and helicopters are serving the area. This is probably one of the most secure areas on the planet right now. We have thousands of law enforcement agencies from all over the state and all over the Midwest here. The convention starts today, it will run through Thursday. When it comes to presidential security, Secret Service is top of mind. However, local law enforcement also plays a role in keeping presidents and candidates safe. During a high-profile visit, local law enforcement takes on roles, like escorting, maintaining security checkpoints or securing a building. Wake County Sheriff's Office underwent training for these visits just a few months ago, and our own Deborah Morgan played the role of a dignitary they had to keep safe. Proper training and experience is why we had these classes, and that way we can effectively do our job whenever these visits occur. And the Wake County Sheriff's Office said there is continuous training done to stay prepared. As we know, North Carolina is a swing state and home to a lot of visitors, so this training is crucial. We're 6'17" right now is the time you see a nice sunrise there behind me, Elizabeth Gardner in the W.R.S. Weather Center right now with several other looks around town. It looks beautiful out there, but it is going to be dangerously hot this afternoon. Pretty sun just popped up over the horizon there in Goldsboro, a mix of sun and clouds there, taking a look at Apex and Chapel Hill, looking nice and calm. Chapel Hill courtesy of Top of the Hill Restaurant and of course, Fayetteville, our newsroom there on Hay Street. Here's what's happening. We have high pressure that's sitting just to our West and a cold front to our east. So we're sort of in a holding pattern right now where there's not a whole lot happening We will have the potential for some isolated storms, but that's because we have so much moisture in the atmosphere and the afternoon heating will help to pop up those storms. With lots of moisture in the atmosphere, a few of those could produce some heavy rain, but nothing that's going to cause us any problems, no flooding for today. Now that may change later on in the week. Take a look at our current pattern. We have high pressure that's sitting just offshore, a low pressure system that's going to drop to the south, and that's going to help to really increase the feed of moisture across the area and a cold front will slide in and then stall over us. And so that's going to start to bring us some heavy rain on Thursday that will continue on Friday and then we'll continue to have a chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday, but the heaviest days look like Thursday and Friday. So we'll see an increase in our chances for rain and a break from some of this intense heat that we're starting the week with. So we'll have a nice cool off, but we'll also have a flooding risk. We have a level two risk for flooding from the triangle area southward and eastward on Friday and Thursday. So just keep that in mind. So more widespread rain on Thursday and Friday, and our rain chances between now and then will mainly be just isolated in nature. So let's follow that. Put this into motion. You can see that stationary front there. Here's Thursday. You can see those yellow shaded areas, plenty of rain, and our forecast, as long as that front stays stalled there, we're going to continue to see that rain. That's Saturday at four o'clock, and we'll continue with the chance of rain on Sunday. We'll watch how things really start to crank up. So these are all cumulative amounts of rain for Raleigh, looking at about a little under an inch of rain by Thursday, over an inch by Friday. By the time we get to Sunday, we'll have totals looking at about two and a half inches. This is a look at that more widespread, as much as three inches along and east of I-95. So a good soaking rain for us over several days will really help our drought situation. Slow is also going to drag down some cooler air, and so that will be something that will be nice. We'll be out of the dangerous heat. The most dangerous heat we see this week will be today and tomorrow. But then highs over the weekend will be in the 80s, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It'll be nice to have that break, but we will talk about how dangerous it will be for us the next couple of days. Coming up, Ken. Hi, Elizabeth. It's six-twenty. Just a few minutes ago. I told you about what it was noticing on the highway 540, and there was a major slowdown there in the westbound lanes. Well, it's completely cleared up right now. Nothing to worry about. All the major routes in the capital city delay-free this morning. Let's give you a look at exactly what we're talking about. Endurum Hillsborough Chapel Hills. Similarly, 80, 540. All delay-free this morning, which is good news. That's what you want to hear. There's a live look at I-40 and Rockquarie Road traffic is beginning to pick up a bit. The westbound lanes are right there next to us, but traffic flowing nicely in both directions delay-free this morning. Ken, thank you. Up next, Princess Kate makes another public appearance as she continues to battle cancer. And stay with WRAL, because coming up at 7 a.m. today, we'll have the latest developments on the investigation and Trump's recovery as his party comes together tonight to officially nominate the former president as their nominee to kick off the Republican National Convention. A basketball power couple's sweet birthday well wishes. And a royal appearance at the championships at Wimbledon. Ken Smith here now with What's Trending on her Monday Ken. Yeah, let's start with those birthday well wishes. WNBA star Caitlyn Clark reached a morph and caught McCaffrey a happy birthday over the weekend. Clark also said that she is thankful to have him in her life and quote, "May this be the year you finally find a way to outshoot me." When Connie came back with a photo response saying, "I'll keep letting you win those shooting contests." Gotta love that cute banter between a young couple in law. Now if you don't know who Connor McCaffrey is, he's a former Iowa basketball player. He's the son of the head coach of the Iowa men's basketball team and you know they met back in college. And now he works for the Indianapolis Pacers. So he's in Indy with her. The deep ties. Perfect basketball with that couple. And this gave me goosebumps over the weekend, the princess Caitlyn making her second public appearance while in the midst of her battle with cancer, the princess of Wales and her daughter Charlotte attended the men's singles final championships at the Wimbledon tournament Sunday as soon as she appeared in the royal box, the crowd gave her a standing ovation. And what a match she got to see. Yes. Well, it was Carlos Alvarez clean sweep over Novak Jocovitch just in straight sets there. But she also was part of the closing ceremony after you know the awards in the championship and all didn't have any speaking role in it, but she was there right down there on the grass. Yeah. Good to see her resuming public appearances. That's encouraging. Still to come what the FBI is working on now as they gather more information on the man they say is responsible for Saturday shooting. And day one of the four day Republican National Convention kicks off today up next live discussion from Milwaukee with the breakdown. What's next at Moss Adams?
