Today is a W-O-R-E-L weather alert day. We're going to see bands of heavy rain and lightning moving across our area all day long. I'll show you how much rain we may total up and when you can see the best chance of flooding. And those bands of rain are affecting the morning commute. We have W-O-R-L lives storm tracker tracking the morning commute for you. Also, breaking news we're following this morning and early morning fire damaged an apartment complex near NC State's campus. We'll tell you what we have learned after crews spent hours on that scene. A lot of things in motion here on our Friday morning at W-O-R-E-L weather alert day first and foremost. I'm Jeff Hogan. And I'm Renee Choo. We'll help you navigate your way through this W-O-R-E weather alert day where we could see heavy rain. Yes, we need it, but it's going to be coming down in downpours and on and off throughout the day. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner shows us where those storms are now. So this will have a tropical feel to it. We have tropical systems come through. We tend to have bands of rain. This is not a tropical system, but we'll have a lot of those characteristics. There's lots of moisture in the atmosphere. We'll have some heavy downpours and a lot of lightning with these bands. A band number one that came through overnight last night is pushing out of our viewing area, still seeing some rain in the western part of Chatham County and a little bit of Orange County and Person County. Wave number two is here. We did have some very heavy rain with this. Earlier, it's up and down the I-95 corridor. That's gradually going to push westward. But right now, in the triangle per se, we don't have any rain falling. That will change as we get through the days. We see these waves continuing to move through and that's a pattern that sticks with us well into the evening. A little bit of lightning here around Wilson and just west of Rocky Mount. Be careful out there as you're trying to get the dog walked and head out to work. If you can hear thunder, you are in danger of being struck by lightning. We do have a flood watch. In effect, an inch and a half to three inches of rain, it's most likely that we'll see a better chance for flooding later in the afternoon after we've seen several of these bands of rain moving through. Here's 9 a.m. There's lunchtime. There's four, five o'clock this afternoon. You can see that rain just keeps on coming and it will be heavy in pockets. So, WR weather alert day flooding is possible today. The highest threat during the afternoon and it does cover the entire viewing area. It's really wet here in Roxborough. We just had a heavy band of rain move through 80 degrees in the triangle with a due point of 75, but it won't get much hotter than that. We do have a break from the heat today, but that intense heat does come back in a few days. I'll show you when coming up, Ken. All right, Elizabeth at 601 weather and traffic every 10 minutes to make sure you know exactly what's going on when you head out this morning. First of all, just take a look at these road conditions. Elizabeth just mentioned all the overnight showers that you receive. We've we're seeing it here with this road map. We also have you covered out on the road's photographer, Charles Bradley, is there right now. He's around the Glenwood Avenue era right near Crabtree Valley Mall. Right now, his rentee wipers are not going, but as Elizabeth just mentioned this morning, these rain bands will be coming in waves. So, just keep that in mind. Elsewhere around the triangle this morning, we just have really one major issue to report and this accident we've been tracking for the last hour. So, it's a serious crash on Capitol Boulevard in the Southbound lanes, the East Mobile Road. We're not seeing any issues in that area whatsoever, but if you have to navigate that area, you'll notice some police activity so far. Elsewhere around the triangle this morning, all the major routes are delivery at this hour. Good. Good morning. I'm Chris Loving. Good here in the WRL Live Center. Just getting you some look from a scene that cleared not too long ago. This is on South Wilmington Street as well as Peacan Road in Raleigh at that BP gas station. Investigators were looking at something at the time. You can see there's a detective out there looking for something on the ground, but it's not quite clear what exactly happened at that scene. That's why I've reached out to Raleigh Police. The watch commander said right now they're doing roll call to get specifics on this, but we're trying to give more details with it. As soon as we have that update today on what was going on here at this scene or porta here in the WRL Live Center. Raleigh firefighters responded to an apartment fire overnight near NC State's campus. It happened at the Centennial Lofts on Crest Road just after 1 a.m. The crews stayed on that scene for several hours working to clean up the aftermath. We know the American Red Cross also responded and is helping no word on how that fire started and we are working to get some more information about the extent of the damage and the number of people affected by it. Zevelin Police arrested a man for what they say was a domestic related shooting. Police responded to the scene on flannel way around 9 p.m. That's near Old Bun Road. 19-year-old Romeo Sanchez faces a charge of assault with the deadly weapon. The person who was shot is expected to be okay. We're working to learn more about what led to the shooting. President Joe Biden is defending his fitness for office. The president fielded questions in a high-stakes news conference last night. He says he will not leave the race. And I think I'm the most qualified person to run for president. I beat him once and I will beat him again. I'm not in this for my legacy. I'm in this to complete the job I started. At Biden's news conference had some gaffes. He referred to Vice President Harris as Vice President Trump at one point and called Ukrainian President Volodemer Zelensky, President Putin. This was Biden's 15th solo news conference, a historically low number compared to recent predecessors at this point in their presidencies. The Hope County Sheriff's Office arrested a man from New York who was wanted for murder. Stefan Gillam was found off of Ben Austin Road in Rayford. The Sheriff's Office says he had outstanding warrants for homicide. Once he was discovered in North Carolina, Hope County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the U.S. Marshals in taking him into custody. Fort Liberty is investigating how a slide labeling anti-abortion groups as terrorist organizations made it into a training presentation. On Wednesday, a picture of this slide was posted to X and has since gone viral. The training took place at Fort Liberty earlier this week to train soldiers to who man access points around the post. Officials say the slides weren't properly vetted and that a garrison employee made the presentation. Carol Tobias is president of the anti-abortion group National Right to Life is looking at the lasting impact of this. My concern is that people are on the country would be worried that, you know, are they going to be beat up because they are now considered terrorists? In a post to ex Senator Ted Bud called the incident despicable and disturbing both the U.S. Army and Fort Liberty are investigating. Covering Wake County, you have a chance today to snag some great deals on kids' toys, clothes, and more. The kids exchange consignment sale begins today. WRL's Kelsey Coffey joins us live from the state fairgrounds. Kelsey, I've been a buyer and a seller for this too and it can be overwhelming but it takes some time to find those deals. Renee, it does take some time so it's best to make a plan, have a list before you come and I wanted to give everyone some perspective on really just how great these prices are. So I decided to put together some outfits that you may give your child for the first day of school. So these are five outfits here all for a total of under $50. This is the highest price item in this group, $11. So that's how inexpensive and economic this can be for so many families out there. I want everyone to take a look at this. Dozens of sellers gathered yesterday, they were wrapped outside of the building for the sale. They get first dibs on all of these items before the big sale that happens today for the general public. This sale is an easy one-stop shop for back-to-school items. A new survey shows that more than a third of parents are setting a budget for back-to-school shopping this year. As prices keep going up, big bargains like the kids exchange can help family save. Having the three-year-old toddler, like I've been doing this since I was expecting in prep for him and I think we've probably saved hundreds over the years but for a lot of things, there's things that you can find here that I wouldn't be able to afford otherwise. And even if your student is not school age, there's really items for all ages. The kids exchange will open this morning at nine o'clock. It'll be open today from nine until six. You can also shop on Saturday and Sunday and Sunday. Everything will be half-price. Kelsey Coffee, WRL news, live in Raleigh. Today we'll get a better idea if the Federal Reserve will consider lowering interest rates or keep them the same. The Producer Price Index measures the average price businesses paid to suppliers, which in turn is passed on to us as we buy stuff. This is key inflation, information the Federal Reserve considers when making decisions about interest rates. The Fed meets again July 30th but a decision on interest rates likely won't be made until the fall. New this morning, 20 Starlink satellites are in the wrong orbit after SpaceX launch suffered a malfunction. That was the moment a Falcon 9 rocket took off from California last night. Around 130 this morning though, SpaceX reported a second stage engine did not burn as planned that left the satellites flying lower than intended in orbit. SpaceX says it's working to connect with satellites and adjust their trajectory if possible. We're at 610 right now on your Friday. Delta has an Olympic-sized problem on its hands. Why the airline says the Olympic Games in Paris are bringing them some issues. And the stars came out last night for the SB Awards. Did I hear you're shopping for a car because I've been at it for ages. Such a time suck, right? Not really. I bought it on Carvana. Super convenient. Oh, then comes all the financing, research. Am I right? Well, you can, but I got pre-qualified for a Carvana auto loan in like two minutes. Yeah, but then all the number crunching in terms, right? Nope. I saw real numbers as I shopped, found my dream car and got it in a couple of days. Wait, like you already have it? Yep. Go to Carvana.com to finance your car the convenient way. [whistles] 612, we have a WRL weather alert day for a flooding potential and we have a brand new flash flood warning. It's going to include Siler City. That's really the only part of the viewing area, this northwestern portion of Chatham County that's under that flash flood warning in our viewing area. It expires at nine o'clock, but along this heavy band of rain, we've seen as much as two to three, maybe even some pockets of four inches so far this morning. And so we do have a flood advisory that stretches all the way up through parts of Orange County as well. So just be careful as you're heading out. This band is moving out of the viewing area and this band is beginning to light up a little bit, but we're going to continue to see waves of rain on and off all day and some of those will be heavy at times. Lots of lightning out there this morning too, so just be careful. We have a flood watch in effect through the entire day for an inch and a half to three inches of rain. We see a good bit of rain in Clinton. You can see the wet streets here this morning. Our temperatures you're walking out is warm and sticky. Temperatures are in the mid 70s to around 80. If you're walking the dog this morning, just be careful out there. Watch out for lightning. You'll have to do the same later on this evening, Ken. Alright, let's have it happening now. The WO traffic's in all the overnight showers. You just mentioned Elizabeth. We're seeing it showing up on our rogue conditions map this morning. Anytime you see the green on this map, that's showing all the road conditions that we're expecting. And many of you are waking up to wet roads this morning, taking a live look outside right now. I-40 Lake Wheeler Road. You can see just a little bit of sheen right there on I-40 Westbound. If that's part of your morning commute, that's good news. Traffic is flowing nicely. Elsewhere around the Triangle, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, all the major routes are delay-free from an A. And the morning like that, commuters want to hear that kind of thing. Ken, from the road to air travel, the summer games in Paris are causing problems for Delta. The airline says the games will cost it $100 million in revenue. That's because travelers are skipping trips to Paris in an effort to avoid the city. Delta has the most service of any U.S. airline to Paris, including a joint venture with Air France. Delta says travelers are heading to other destinations hoping to avoid crowds. Some of the biggest stars in sports walked the red carpet of the EspĂ Awards last night, and W.R.S. Michelle McConkey is here with some of the biggest moments, Michelle. Yeah, it was quite a night, Jeff, led by host Serena Williams. The Espy celebrated a landmark year for women's sports with stars like Simone Biles, Kaitlyn Clark, and Juju Watkins among the honorees. Prince Harry was honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service. The Duke of Sussex served in the British military for 10 years, including two tours in Afghanistan. And former NFL player Steve Gleason was honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. He was diagnosed with ALS in 2011. His nonprofit, Team Gleason, helps people with ALS live purposeful lives. And Don Staley, coach of the National Champion South Carolina Women's Basketball Team, she received the Jimmy V award for perseverance, recognized for her fight for equality, for women's sports, and also for her leadership in the fight against cancer. The power to make a difference. You can stand up for what is right, you can inspire, motivate, and help others. All it takes is the will to do so to the in-heart. And she admitted she felt a little undeserving of this recognition, saying past recipients have faced incredible challenges and proven themselves as true warriors. College athletes Cooper Flag and Sadie Engelhardt, they were honored as Gatorade Best Female and Male Players of the Year. It's one of the biggest high school honors. Flag will attend Duke Engelhardt and see state this fall. There are some fun things happening this weekend in the triangle. Yeah, time to take a stroll about in our WRL out and about best bets right here. We're all these first summer festivals happening tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can head downtown and play games and enjoy some food trucks. There'll be beer and wine for adults who are interested. There is also going to be a corn hole tournament there. This event is free. Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is bringing his In Ain't Right tour to Raleigh tonight. He'll be performing at PNC Arena at 730. Tickets are still available this morning. They start at $25. Tomorrow night you can head out to Koga Booth Amphitheater and carry for some beach music. The Catalina's will take the stage at eight, bringing a score of beach music favorites. We'll have you dancing the night away for sure. Tickets are still available for that. For more about these events and other events you can go to WRL.com and search out and about. Before we get to enjoy those fun events we do have to get through a WRL weather alert day. It's going to be a rainy one. We haven't had one of these for a while Elizabeth and it won't be constant rain but just rather waves of rain. The rain is going to be heavy at times and that's where we could see some flooding. That's why we have our WRL weather alert day. So we have a flash flood warning that was just posted a few minutes ago. It expires at 9 a.m. We've had a band of very heavy rain coming through right here this area. So this is going to include parts of Chatham County. There's also an aerial flood advisory. It just means you should be on the lookout for that. That's that longer green box if you will that covers a good bit of orange county. Let's take a look at how much rain that we've seen especially here in this box right around Siler City. It's been as much as two and a half to three inches. You can see there in the southern part of Alamance County as much as three inches as well. So that heavy band of rain has really dumped some considerable rainfall there. So just keep in mind that that can happen anywhere as we get through the day today. We're going to see more and more bands of rain like this. The other thing you really need to be careful for all day today is lightning. These bands of rain are containing a lot of lightning. For those of us who have been here for a while and you're familiar with how tropical systems work in this area it's going to feel a lot like that. It's not a tropical system but it's going to have these bands of rain that are very heavy and they have a lot of lightning in them and they're just going to continue to push across the area. We had some heavy rain in Goldsboro earlier still dealing with some lightning there and some of that rain continuing to spread northward and of course we have that other heavy band that's moving westward out of the viewing area. There's a flood watch in effect for it today an inch and a half to three inches of rain and of course we've already had some pockets of three inches of rain. Expected wet commute this morning in places as the waves of rain move through and then this afternoon as we've seen multiple waves of rain we'll have the potential for flooding and then all of this will begin to ease up a little bit for us overnight and our flooding risk will begin to ease up a bit. A little bit of sunshine trying to break through in Roxborough but mostly we're going to end up with cloud cover for it today. We have a low pressure system that's down to the south that is pushing these waves of rain into the viewing area and you can see how far south it is right now. It has to move away from us all the way across the viewing area before it goes away. So lunchtime you can see the bands of heavy rain that continues there at five o'clock. There will be breaks where you are in between these bands but generally we're going to see this pattern of rain that's heavy at times moving through the area all the way into maybe even early tomorrow morning. There's five six o'clock on Saturday morning. We will see that shifting eastward and we'll see partly cloudy skies during the afternoon on Saturday. Best chance of rain Saturday will be in the first half of the day. We'll take a look at what we're expecting now. We have that level two risk of flooding for today as much as three inches of rain in pockets, widespread. It's going to be probably one to two inches. We definitely need the rain. Our drought situation isn't looking great. One positive for today is it'll be cooler at 83 degrees. The big heat returns for the weekend. We're going to talk about what it will feel like with the heat index but Ken I mean look at that on Tuesday 101. I don't even want to think about it. We'll get through today. How about that? The wet road conditions that Elizabeth has been mentioning all morning showing up right now. Many of you are waking up to these conditions this morning as you can see from our maps. Let's go ahead and take you outside and show exactly what we're talking about in terms of these wet road conditions. We want to start with I-40 and Lake Wheel of Road. You can see a little bit of sheen on interstate I-40 right now but the traffic is moving along nicely. On the other side of the butt line this is a live look at I-440 and Lake Boone Trail. Traffic is moving along nicely. Some people are using the windshield wipers depending on where they're coming from but as Elizabeth has been mentioning all morning these rains will be coming in waves during the morning taking a look at our traffic map this morning. The good news here is even though it's going to be a rainy morning commute right now all the major routes are delay free at this hour. Ken thanks.
