[MUSIC PLAYING] Now breaking news from WRAL, coverage you can count on. And that breaking news this morning? One person is shot here in Durham on Glenbrook Avenue. Coming up, I'm going to show you all the evidence markers behind me. Also, more breaking news for you. About 1,800 people in Durham are without power after crash took down power lines. We'll show you the extent of the damage. And if you thought yesterday was hot, we are only getting hotter today, excessive heat warnings out across the area. We're going to break down just how high those fields like temperatures could go coming up. Hurricane barrel regained strength overnight. Now setting its aim on the Yucatan Peninsula. When and where forecasters think, it will have impacts here in the US. A lot to tell you about here on this Friday. We hope you had a wonderful 4th of July. We're glad you're with us. I'm Renee Chu. And I'm Jeff Hoege. Great to have you along here Friday. You know yesterday kind of felt with a holiday. It almost felt like a Friday. But here we are on the 5th and a Friday. And Anthony Baglione in the WRA weather center. Turning up the heat. Yeah, it's going to get even hotter for us, guys. Yesterday, we tied a record across the area. 101 is what we set for a high temperature. Here's a look this morning at some new alerts that we have, an excessive heat warning. We've not seen this yet this year in that purple color contour. What that's saying is we could see feels like values up to about 110 degrees here across Raleigh. Durham, most of our viewing, or at least the central parts of our viewing area. Heat advisories outlined there in the orange, no matter where you are at. Plan for values feeling like 105 plus today. Where we currently sit across the area, temperatures are in the 70s. So it's manageable close to 80 though in Raleigh. 77 Rocky Mount. It's a muggy for us. And there's a look at those hour by hour feels like temps today. If you're out and about at all, 108 at 3 o'clock, 108 at 4, that's going to be the peak heating of the day, even into this evening. We're going to see values close to 100. So just please take that heat very seriously. We go through the day. There may be a spotty shower. We're storm to help cool us off. Not a lot though. You can see on Futurecast by about lunchtime. We're still quiet. We'll watch that potential here later on this afternoon. We do have much better rain chances, though, guys, on the way. We're going to talk about when those arrive here in just a few. Anthony, thanks. Breaking news, a person is in the hospital after an early morning shooting. This happened around 1 AM in a neighborhood on Glenbrook Drive. Nick Perlin joins us now, live from the scene in the W-O-R-E-L Breaking News Tracker. And Nick, you notice there are a lot of evidence markers there on the ground. Renee, it's very jarring how many of evidence markers there are actually. And I'm going to get behind the camera just so I can show you just how many. And as I zoom in here, you're going to see dozens of evidence markers all throughout Glenbrook here, and you can also see some detectives over there shining some flashlights on some of those evidence markers. I can tell you, I counted up to 65 evidence markers on a Glenbrook Drive. We do know one person was shot and taken to the hospital. Like Renee was saying, we're still working to get an update on that person's condition. And we're also trying to learn from Durham Police if they know who fired that gun early this morning. I'll stay on top of this one all morning. Live in Durham, Nick Pearl in WRL News. Well, some Chris Lovinggood here in the WRL Live Center with a breaking update. There was some sort of vehicle rollover crash that happened in Durham. And that resulted in 1,800 plus people being without power because power lines were brought down here. This is the Duke Energy Outage Map, where you can see in Durham right there. I'll hit that little button. And you'll see toward the left part of the screen where it reads 1,862 customers without power. This crash happened at Washington in making streets just after two this morning. I think we may have some video that we can play from the scene here. Morgan, do you see that in there? Are we able to play that? Looks like. OK, maybe not there. Well, in any case, Duke Energy's Map again shows this outage happened around 4.45 this morning, at least for a restoration time. No word just yet or more specifics with this. But WRL will stay with this story to try to get you some more information in terms of what led to that car crash even happening. The WRL breaking news tracker was also on the scene of this house fire early this morning. It happened on Wensley Court, right near Lewisburg Road in US 1 in Raleigh, just after 1 30 this morning. Raleigh Police and fire crews responded. We're working to learn if anyone was hurt or if they will be displaced after that fire. Crowds of people gathered at Raleigh's Dix Park did not get the fireworks show they imagined went a rain delay last night, created mass confusion. W Orioles Kelsey Coffee joins us now live from Dix Park this morning. And Kelsey organizers say rain and technical difficulties were to blame. Renee, this morning we're reaching out to city leaders to get to the bottom of what happened with all of that confusion, a huge crowd. Left this part of Dix Park yesterday after that major mix up. And right now you're looking at video of when those crowds were leaving in that mass exodus. Heavy rain moved through the area just before 9 30. That's when some people thought the park was being evacuated and left, creating a major traffic jam. Now, despite that rain, the show did go on, but only for a few minutes. The city later released a statement saying the show was cut short due to technical difficulties. Earlier, the city created a sign up link for text alerts about the show. We checked in on that. They did not send any notifications about the weather or delays and they also did not offer any updates on social media. The city did say that the show would not be rescheduled. Kelsey Coffee, WREO News, live in Raleigh. This morning Hurricane barrel has strengthened back into a category three storm. It is headed for what could be a direct hit on Mexico's Caribbean coast. Hopefully you had a great July 4th holiday - Let's talk about what we're looking at as we go through today because we do have a couple of rain chances on the way that are really gonna help to kind of mitigate some of our drought conditions across the area. Here's future cast for today. Number one, you can see we're starting off dry. We don't really have any issues through the majority of our forecast, aside from the heat. Please take that in mind today. It's gonna be very, very hot once again. We get into this afternoon and you notice it's still pretty quiet but there are some bubble up storms that could get going closer to this evening. Let's say after about six o'clock if you have any plans tonight, that may be a factor. A lot of that may stay north of the triangle. We get into tomorrow though, very similar story. Only better coverage tomorrow, afternoon and evening. - Firefighters in California are dealing with stifling heat as they try to put out this wildfire. The Coast Guard deployed drones, boats, and helicopters to monitor the waters. - We are weeks away from the start of the fall semester for many colleges. Some students still don't know if they'll be able to afford to go. That's because of delays with the new free application for federal student aid or FAFSA letters. The FAFSA's remodel was supposed to make the application process easier and faster to the application easier and faster to fill out. It made the application process easier for some but created glitches and crashes for others. Now, many students still don't know how much federal student aid they'll get, if any. And that's not normal for July. - So what would happen is we would give a student their admissions decision and then within two weeks be able to deliver a financial aid package. Which is really helpful because then they would have anywhere from two to three months to be able to work towards that May 1st deadline of when the National candidate reply date is. - Instead, weeks out from the fall semester admissions staff are struggling and parents are concerned. - The FBI is investigating a deadly shooting at Yellowstone National Park. According to a statement from the park, Rangers responded to Canyon Village overnight Thursday about an armed person making threats. When Rangers confronted that person, shots were fired. Gone now. - Yeah, we're starting off dry here this morning. We're gonna see a couple big stories for us as we head into the weekend. One of course is the heat that's been with us the past couple days and really gonna be continuing. And then a couple more storm chances that we really could use, which we'll talk about here in just a second. Let's go over though, kind of the heat alerts across this part of the country because it's incredible to see how many of these and how consistently they've been put out here the past little while. We see all of that orange right there. Those are heat advisories. What that's saying is it's one step below an excessive heat warning where we're seeing fields like values here in the orange showing up probably up to about 105 to 109 where it gets a little bit worse if the heat is up to about 110. Raleigh, most of the triangle right there, we have an excessive heat warning in place. No matter the designation, just make sure to keep all of the areas today in mind where we're expecting all of that heat. We start off this morning. Temperatures are currently in the upper 70s where it's 77 Rocky Mountain 73 in South Hill. We're going to continue to climb those temps here as far as the fields like values up into about 109 this afternoon. It still is going to be pretty hot here even this evening. 101 at seven o'clock. You notice some of those thunderstorm icons though coming in. Most of our day is totally dry but we get closer to this evening. Kind of like what we saw yesterday where we get the daytime heating. Some of those storms start to bubble on up and that will be a potential for us today. Here's lunchtime. We're still looking good to go. Just a nice mix of sun and clouds but that will be a very hot mix of sun and clouds today. We get closer to seven o'clock. You see some bubble up storms. There's one near Fayetteville. We get there's nine o'clock. You can see still relatively quiet but some of those that you see there on Futurecast could get closer as we head through tonight into tomorrow morning. Keep in mind too, we saw many, many rip current threat rescues yesterday or many rip current rescues. We have high rip currents along most of our coast today. So if you see the red flags flying and just in general, it is not going to be a good day to go in the water despite the fact with how warm it's going to be out there. Hurricane Beryl here in the tropics, it's starting to approach Kazumil, Mexico, right there, Cancun on the top of your screen. 110 mile prior wins. We expect a landfall with this system at any time here this morning and then it will push back out into the Gulf of Mexico and get closer to Mexico once again as we head into next week. And 102 for us today. Very, very hot. Keep the heat in mind 97 tomorrow. Milder though on Sunday at 89.
