A woman in Goldsboro is dead after shooting early this morning. Coming up I'm going to walk you through the crime scene. And there's rain on the radar. That's a good thing to see. I'll show you when we can see some storms though that could become severe. Coming up. [MUSIC] And more details on the case of Blake and London Devins so many updates here that we're learning there this morning. Thank you for joining us. I'm Eric Miller. We got to start off with that forecast today. Once again, going to be a hot one out there. And Elizabeth, there's even a chance for rain. We're so happy to see that for sure. We had some isolated showers early early this morning around the triangle and some of our eastern counties. But the cold front is headed our way and you can see much more rain around Greensboro, Winston-Salem. That's all going to slide into our area before lunchtime. And then in the afternoon we'll have the potential for some of those to become storms. South and east of the triangle we have a level one risk for severe weather, damaging winds, heavy rain, hail, all a possibility. Our rain chance up until lunchtime is about 20%. And then after lunch it goes up to 50% with that potential for some scattered storms. It's also the second day in a row of a heat advisory for most of us from Raleigh southward toward Fayetteville and then back over toward Wayne County. It'll feel like 102 to 108 right around Raleigh 103 to 104 and then in some of our southern counties up to 106 to 108. Starting to see the clouds building back in here in Durham. Boy, it's warm 82 degrees with a dew point of 73 so it's really warm and sticky as you step out this morning. Our highs will be in the mid 90s and it looks like we're going to have a high heat index again over the weekend. I'll show you what it could feel like coming up Ken. Alright Elizabeth, we continue to follow some breaking news out of I-95 this morning. I'm in the I-95 southbound, completely shut down. Just south of Fayetteville is exit 41, exit 41 which is chicken foot road. It's in the whole county area. Now a detour has been set up around 301 south. We'll get you over to back over to I-95. Sky 5 is actually over that scene right now. Let's take a live look at what we're seeing now right now on I-95 south. You can see two Jacknive trailers there. Semi's, a couple of FedEx trucks and another Jacknive trailer. Semi truck, they've crashed through the concrete barriers there along I-95 south. This road is likely going to be shut down for at least another hour according to the DOT. But you can see traffic is not moving at all. Those things are completely shut down. Unfortunately for those folks who are stuck there in that traffic right now, there's no moving at all. If you're listening to us on the radio, make sure you get off I-95 south. Whatever exit you're coming to, if you're still moving, get off right now. Get over to 301 south, work your way down and that'll work your way back to I-95 south. You can see the Sky 5 video showing you the huge backup on I-95 south. We'll keep monitoring it for you here in the WRL traffic center. Thank you. We're following breaking news out of Wayne County as well, where a woman is dead after her shooting in Goldsboro. This happened on Hollowell Avenue just after 2.30 this morning. The BRL's Nick Purlan was in the WRL breaking news tracker as police investigated. Goldsboro police were busy early this morning investigating a shooting on this stretch of Hollowell Street that left one woman dead. Now take a look at this video from the WRL breaking news tracker and you can see Goldsboro police taping off the 300 block of Hollowell Street early this morning. We're told the shooting happened at around 2.30. Now police were also investigating this gray car and as you can see right here, there's a bullet hole in the back windshield. Like I said, this shooting did happen at around 2.30 early this morning and one woman, sadly, died here on the scene. We're still trying to learn from Goldsboro police if they know who fired that gun. Once we have more information, we'll be sure to update you in Goldsboro. Nick Purlan, WRL News. To more breaking news this morning where police in Durham are investigating a stabbing at a home on North Alston Avenue. This is video from the WRL breaking news tracker. Officers responded to that scene near Hollowell Street just after 2 this morning. Police say a woman was stabbed in the head and she has serious injuries. They don't have any information on a suspect at this time. We're working to learn more about a house fire in Wake County. The WRL breaking news tracker was on Dolphin Turn Street in Willow Springs just around 11 last night. You can see several firefighters working as smoke could be seen coming from the home. We're working to find out the cause and if anyone was hurt. The adoptive mother facing murder charges in the deaths of two siblings is due in court today. Blake and London Devon were missing for years. Now police say they were starved and abused until they died. As WRL's Kelsey Coffee shares, Avante Devon is facing some shocking allegations. We're just hours away from seeing Avante Devon here in court for the first time. This comes as police released new details about Blake and London yesterday. They say the two children were likely abused and starved to death. Devon is now facing multiple charges including first degree murder, felony child abuse and concealment of death. She's accused of forcing someone else to burn and dismember their bodies. Police say Devon kept Blake, London and her other adopted kids in small rooms. Sometimes in complete darkness with little or no food. WRL spoke with Brianna Murrow once known as Cherish Devon who lived with them as a child. It was very horrible. You know, there were days where we didn't go with showers. We didn't go with baths. The only time we could turn on the bathtub or the sink was to get water. Devon's first court appearance is scheduled for this afternoon at 2.30. Kelsey Coffee, WRL news and Fayetteville. Police in Raleigh are trying to find the person who shot a man last night. Investigators were at the scene on Morgan's Mill Court for more than three hours until after one this morning. It's near Rush Street and Hammond Road. Video from the WRL breaking news tracker shows evidence markers scattered in the street as officers investigated. The man who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to live. President Joe Biden will be in Raleigh in less than 24 hours. He and first lady Jill Biden plan to fly to RDU immediately after tonight's debate in Atlanta. The president's itinerary shows he's expected to arrive at RDU just before 2 tomorrow morning. This will put the Bidens in place for a campaign event midday tomorrow in Raleigh. Former President Donald Trump will also be on the campaign trail tomorrow. He'll appear at a rally near Norfolk, Virginia. Tonight's debates will be the first time a current president and a former president will debate each other. It's a key moment for both campaigns as they try to set expectations ahead of November's election. President Biden has been at Camp David huddling with advisers and holding mock debates. Former President Trump has been at Mar-a-Lago doing more informal prep. He's expected to focus on the economy and the border during the 90 minute debate. Biden will likely zero in on abortion rights and threats to democracy. CNN is the host of the debate. It's happening at their studios in Atlanta. You can watch it live here on WRAL starting at 9. The state senate will vote today on three veto overrides. They're expected to pass on party lines. One bill would ban the wearing of cloth masks in public, though surgical or medical masks would still be allowed. Another rolls back some recent juvenile justice reforms. The third allows owners of billboards along highways to cut down more trees in front of the house over road. All three vetoes last night. When the senate follows suit, those bills will become law over the governor's objections. The state senate passed a bill that puts into law a broad definition of anti-Semitism. It adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of anti-Semitism. Some critics worry about the implications for free speech, particularly being critical of the state of Israel. The bill easily cleared the house earlier in the legislative session. For more on that bill, you can visit the NC Capital section of WRAL.com. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other presidential candidates will have to wait longer to find out if they'll be on the ballot here in North Carolina. The state elections board voted last night to deny initial bids from the party's sponsor in Kennedy, Cornell West and Randall Terry. The party is collected more than 13,000 signatures apiece from North Carolina voters, but officials say they've gotten allegations of flaws in each petition. The board says it'll make a final decision at a later date. You can read what board members had to say at the NC Capital section of WRAL.com. Well today will be a big day for the future of PNC Arena and the Carolina Hurricanes. The Centennial Authority, the group that owns the arena, is expected to give final approval today to a 20-year lease extension with the canes. That deal also includes an agreement to develop up to 80 acres of land around the arena. The development could include apartments, a hotel, restaurants, retail and office space, and a sports book and music venue. The board's special meeting is set for 10 this morning. And with the 16th pick in the 2024 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Jared McCain from Duke University. Come on, listen to that crowd roar. Duke's Jared McCain is on his way to the NBA. The Philadelphia 76ers chose him with the 16th pick in the first round of the draft last night. Kyle Philopowski was expected to go in the first round as well, but he wasn't chosen. Philopowski and UNC's Harrison Ingram are now expected to be drafted in tonight's second round. NC State's DJ Burns and DJ Horn are not expected to be chosen. Coming up in just 15 minutes, a look at some of the other picks, including who the Hornets chose. Tesla's autopilot technology is causing a major debate. While some people were concerned about that tech after a driver ended up on the train tracks. Plus, the LAPD is almost finished with their investigation into Matthew Perry's death. But a source close to the investigation says could happen in the coming months. Two things to watch out for today. We have the potential for some afternoon and evening storms, which could be strong to severe. I'll show you our severe level one risk. Plus, it's a heat advisory again for the second day in a row for parts of the viewing area. I'll show you where it will feel like more than 100. Your heart, it's the only one you have. Fortunately, you also have a choice. Expert cardiologists, talented surgeons, highly skilled specialists, all of whom chose WakeMed. Why? The main reason is the same reason patients choose WakeMed. Taking a live look there over Carolina Beach this morning where man, it is just a beautiful day yet again, kind of day that makes you want to dive into those waves right there. You know what? You're going to want to. It is a hot one yet again today. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner tracking those conditions for us and some showers out to our west. So much needed rain. We had a few showers early this morning, but a cold front is headed our way and it's already bringing some rain to Greensboro, Winston-Salem and back to the north across parts of the mountains. That rolls in here before lunchtime. But during the afternoon, we could see storms that become severe in our south and eastern counties, damaging winds, heavy rain and hail, all a possibility. Let's walk through that on future cast and you can see our cold front swinging through. Right here at noon, some showers, maybe some isolated storms, but notice how it starts to get a little angrier looking after two o'clock down here south and east of the triangle. So that's where we could see some heavier rain and the potential for some storms that could produce some wind damage. The cold front will stall to our south and bring the potential for an isolated shower or two in the afternoon on Friday. And then Saturday and Sunday, we're going to bump up those chances for storms again. So it does look like we'll have some potential for the next three or four days to see some rain, but it's not going to be kind of an all-day soaking rain, which is what we really need. Heat advisory, second day in a row from Raleigh, southward toward Fayetteville and eastward toward Goldsboro. It could feel like 102 to 108 with the heat index and the triangle 103 to 104, but down to the south, potentially 106 to 108. We take a live look at Durham right now and the clouds have really started to thicken up as that front is headed our way. It's getting active in the tropics too. We've been watching a system potentially that would develop and move into the Gulf of Mexico. That one has a small chance of developing, but this one here, coming off the coast of Africa, looks like one to watch. 70% chance that it will develop. It's possible that by early next week it's Hurricane Beryl, our first hurricane of the season. It's likely to come across the leeward islands and then on up into the Caribbean. We'll take a look at futurecast and we can watch that system that gaining some strength and moving again across the toward the Caribbean and possibly into the Gulf of Mexico. That's going to be sitting right there on the Yucatan Peninsula next weekend, so over a week from now. So it's got a long time to try to develop. This one not looking as likely, just a 20% chance, but it is developing in the same place that we saw Tropical Storm Alperto, which was our first named storm of the season. Checking temperatures over the weekend. We're looking at mid 90s, but we'll have a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. You can see a heat index that could spark a heat advisory for the weekend. I'll show you how hot it will feel. And of course, chance of storms, 50 to 60% chance, Ken. All right, Elizabeth, we continue to follow some breaking news in I-95, just south of Fayetteville. The southbound lanes are completely shut down and exit 41. That's a whole county exit. It's a chicken foot road right there in the south of Fayetteville. A detour has been set up. Let's give you a live look now at Sky 5 over that scene this morning. You can see a couple of semi-trucks that crashed through the barriers there on I-95 south, spilling whatever load it was carrying. You can see crews right now are in the process of trying to move those tractor trailers away, but the backup is stretching for miles as I-95, as Sky 5 pulls out to show you the incredible backup. There's absolutely no movement on I-95 southbound right now near Hope County. They're not going anywhere. But if you're listening to us on the radio, you're on I-95 and you're moving. Get off at that very next exit. Work your way over to 301 south and work your way down around this mess on I-95. And that'll get you back to I-95 south a bit lower down. But again, we'll continue to monitor this. And likely it will remain close for at least around 9 o'clock, maybe even later than that. But of course, we'll keep you updated here in the WRA traffic center. Else right around the triangle this morning, we'll see just a couple of disabled vehicles and a crash on local roads not really affecting your morning commute this morning. Ken, thank you very much. We'll check out this new video showing flooding at a Minnesota theme park. Some rides at the Valley Fair amusement park south of Minneapolis had to close. The whole park, though, still didn't close, just rides in the flood zone. And the St. Paul area is experiencing flooding as well as the level of the Mississippi River continues to rise. Eight people have died in four days in rip currents off Florida's coast. Authorities say the most recent death was reported on Sunday. That's when a 60-year-old Missouri woman got entangled in a rip current in their Panama City beach. A 19-year-old and a couple from Pennsylvania also died. The National Weather Service says there have been 19 rip current related deaths so far this year. Eight in Florida and eight in Puerto Rico. Two happened in Texas and there was one incident in Ohio on Lake Erie. Bolivia's government now has new military leaders after a failed coup attempt. Armored vehicles rammed into the doors of Bolivia's government palace on Wednesday. Bolivia officials say military and tanks were trying to take over the plaza there. The country's president fired his top general and swore in new military leaders. Bolivia has seen intensifying protests over its economy's decline. A Tesla driver in California found themselves on train tracks when they were using the autopilot function. Police in Woodland say the feature mistook the tracks for a road posing a serious danger. Thankfully, if nobody was hurt here. Some say this is yours to error, others say it's the car's fault. Police are now warning Tesla drivers to stay vigilant and be aware when driving hands-free. Multiple people could be facing charges related to actor Matthew Perry's death. According to a law enforcement source speaking to People magazine, the Los Angeles Police Department is almost done with their investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office will have to decide on possible charges. Perry was found dead in the pool at his palace Verde's home in October. His death was ruled an accident, but noted contributing factors like the effects of ketamine in his system. The Tennessee Attorney General's Office has turned over its investigation into the failed Graceland foreclosure to federal investigators. According to a statement from the office, they felt the probe into the failed foreclosure was better suited to federal law enforcement. This comes after Presley's daughter, Riley Keough, filed a lawsuit against a company that claimed to hold the deed. The company says Lisa Marie Presley used the estate as collateral to secure a $3.8 million loan that she didn't pay back. A judge blocked the sale in late May. The Biden administration is pushing to make housing more affordable. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced a plan earlier this week to help lower costs. But housing affordability is an ongoing crisis that's impacted by a variety of economic issues right now. Jen Sullivan looks at the various reasons for rising home costs. For the 11th month in a row, housing prices jumped year over year across the country according to the National Association of Realtors. The median existing home sales price last month jumped 5.8% to $419,300, the highest price ever recorded. There is not enough inventory, so the buyers are left with so few choices. The housing affordability crisis is an issue impacting the entire U.S. We face a very significant housing supply shortfall that has been building for a long time. And this supply crunch has led to an affordability crisis. Speaking in Minneapolis this week, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen unveiled the Biden administration's plan to create a $100 million fund to help finance affordable housing projects over the next three years. But it's not just the lack of inventory that's driving up prices. While inflation overall has cooled, shelter costs, which measure things like rent and mortgage costs, continue to rise according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of June 20th, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate averaged 6.87% according to Freddie Mac. In a recent analysis of data from Zillow and Street-Easy found rent prices last year grew faster than wages in about half of major metro areas. That is particularly upsetting because you know you can't really cut back on that. Many economic experts say these high housing costs aren't likely to come down any time soon. That was Jen Sullivan reporting there. Home owners are getting an ultimatum from their insurance companies, making pricey repairs or lose coverage. She started through the list a driveway and immediately I was like whoa wait a minute. Five on your side explains why an increasing number of homeowners are getting demands like this from their insurance companies and how drones are being used to decide what needs to be fixed as tonight at 6 on WRAL. We have breaking news in Goldsboro this morning, a woman is dead after a shooting, but we're learning from investigators as police remain on the scene. And the adopted mother accused in the deaths of two siblings is doing a courtroom today, shocking details in the case after a month's long investigation by Fayetteville Police. That ends so much more, still the comment on WRAL as we take a live look out there in a hot and steady ride. I'm Eric Miller, your meteorologist, Elizabeth Gardner. We have some showers that are showing up on dual dollar 5,000 radar. It's been a while, but over here in Greensboro, Winston-Salem and that's headed eastward. We should see some of that rain in our viewing area close to 11 o'clock this morning and then later on this afternoon. We'll have the potential for some of those to be strong to severe. In our eastern counties, we have a level one risk, damaging winds, heavy rain and hail would be our biggest threat. Our best chance of rain comes after lunchtime, but we may see a few of those isolated showers and just before noon. Also, second day of a heat advisory, it could feel like 102 to 108 from the triangle area southward and eastward over toward the coast, right around the triangle, expected to feel like 103 to 104. Temperatures this afternoon at the pool in the mid-90s, the biggest thing you'll have to watch for is those storms developing, Ken. Elizabeth, we continue to follow the breaking news of I-95 to south of Fayetteville. I know southbound link completely shut down this morning as a result of a crash. Of course, you can use a detour on Highway 301 south, work your way down around that mess, and we'll get an update for you at the bottom of the hour over in Fox 50. Back here in the triangle this morning, the belt line, we use your trouble spots this morning. There's a north side of the belt line, you can see the inner lanes, those folks are trying to stay on the belt line and get to all points south and west. That outer lane, those are the drivers trying to get onto I-40 westbound, so if this is part of your morning commute, you want to give yourselves some extra time this morning. A woman is dead after a shooting in Goldsboro. Police responded to a home on Hollowell Avenue just after 2.30 this morning. That's where they found Adriana Lewis suffering from gunshot wounds. She died at the scene. A suspect is not in custody. Coming up next on Fox 50, it's a big day for PNC Arena and the Carolina Hurricanes. A woman is dead after her shooting in Goldsboro, what we know about the investigation. And here comes some rain. It really is coming. Here it is. You can see it back in the triad. I'll show you when it arrives here and how much we may see. There's also the chance for severe storms. I'll show you. There were a lot of beatings because we would steal for food just to survive. But we're learning about the disappearance of two children. Now that their adoptive mother is charged with murder and set to appear in court today. Well thank you so much for getting your day started with us. I'm Eric Miller. Now you know where we got to start, right? We're talking about that heat yet again. But for folks who are dry out there, we do have some good news. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner tracking some rain. You know, if we had a bunch of days of soaking rain, that would be amazing. Hey, we'll take anything we can get, but this is not going to solve all the problems that we've seen with the dry conditions lately. But it is raining around Greensboro and Winston-Salem. That's going to come pushing into our northern counties by around 11 a.m. And then later this afternoon, after lunchtime, we'll see scattered storms in our eastern counties. We do have a level one risk for severe storms, damaging winds, heavy rain and hail would be our biggest threat. So a few scattered showers up through 11 o'clock and then after lunchtime, a 50% chance that we could see some storms in our eastern counties. It is also the second day in a row of a heat advisory. It could feel like 102 to 108 in the advisory area, which is going to be the triangle area southward and eastward around, say, Raleigh Durham. Our heat index will be 103 to 104. It'll be a little higher down to the south. We take a live look at Durham and we've seen a good bit of cloud cover here over the last hour or so. But it's really warm and muggy. 82, our temperature with a 2.73. So it's uncomfortable already this morning. We will climb into the mid-90s with scattered storms during the afternoon. It looks like we could have a high heat index into the weekend. I'll show you which days we're watching for heat advisories coming up again. Elizabeth, we continue to follow that breaking news of south of Fayetteville concerning I-95. All southbound lanes of I-95 at exit 41 completely shut down because of a crash. Let's give you a look at some video shot by Sky 5 just minutes ago. This scene has basically not changed what you're looking at right now. Two tractor trailers apparently crashed through the barriers there on I-95 south. It involves also a FedEx truck, but Sky 5 is showing you the incredible backup that we're seeing there this morning. That's another close-up look at one of the tractor trailers involved in this mess. If you're getting south this morning, 301 south is your best alternate route to get around this huge backup because nothing is moving right now on I-95 south. We'll keep monitoring it for you here in the WIO traffic center of course. Also around the triangle, you've seen just local incidents, disabled vehicles, local crashes on local roads not really affecting your morning commute at all. But you might want to see some slowdowns in the north side of the Beltline as well as the Salton, the Beltline, around the Carey area. But we'll keep monitoring for you here in the WIO traffic center. We know you're keeping track of it, thanks Ken. The development could include apartments, a hotel, restaurants, retail and office space and a sports book and music venue. The hurricanes and the authority announced non-binding agreements on the lease extension and development plan last August. They were tied to another deal announced around that same time. $300 million in funding from Raleigh and Wake County for a renovation of the arena. The board's special meeting is set for 10 this morning. State lawmakers are expected to vote today on whether to put several constitutional amendments on the ballot this fall. One would change the wording of the State Constitution to specify that non-citizens are not allowed to vote. Another would add to the Constitution the photo ID requirement for mail-in voting. Two others would cap the state income tax at 5 percent and limit the governor's power to replace members of the Council of State. Taking a live look there over southern pines. A beautiful view there. But you know those ground crews have been having to work extra hard lately just because of how dry it is. But you know what? We've got some good news on that front. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner tracking at least a little bit of rain. Here comes some. We had a little bit overnight last night. Some people may have seen what conditions a little bit of rain on their car this morning. But it wasn't much. It was just a little bit of light rain. But here comes a front. Spring is a rain to Greensboro and back to our west. That rolls in here by lunchtime. You can see here where that rain is right now. And it moves on in between 10 and 11 and our northern counties. And then that front slides southward. It does later this afternoon after two o'clock. It's likely that we'll have some storms. Some of those storms could produce some wind damage. We're looking at that level one risk for severe storms. And then as we go to Friday, that front stalls to our south. But it's close enough to us for some more scattered showers and storms during the afternoon and evening on Friday. It looks a little bit less intense with less coverage. And right now we're not under a level one risk. But we are for today. Everywhere from the eastern part of Halifax County all the way down to Hope County in eastern damaging winds and heavy rain would be the biggest threat. It's day two of a heat advisory. And of course we had a heat advisory on Sunday as well. So the effects of heat are cumulative on your body. And this has been a long heat wave. And it's not likely to be over any time soon. It looks like we could have more heat advisories over the weekend this afternoon. It'll feel like 102 to 108. Raleigh looking at maybe 103 to 104. And then down south it could be more like 106 to 108 around say Fayetteville or Goldsboro. Our live look at North Hills is cloudy out there right now. But it is still warm and sticky. 82 degrees. Our winds are light. Our dew point is at about 73. So it definitely feels sticky. Love this photo from Tess Murrow of that sunrise yesterday in eastern. Looking beautiful out there. We'd love to see your photos. Go to www.ril.com search weather watchers and send us a few. Mid nineties this afternoon and Raleigh upper nineties around Fayetteville and low nineties up near the Virginia line. But yesterday we hit 103. The previous record was 102. And 105 is the all time record. That's the hottest it's ever been at RDU. We were only two degrees from that yesterday. 73 is our dew point. It's tropical. It feels very sticky. That's what's going to bring us that heat advisory later this afternoon. And we'll keep it at tropical at least through Sunday before we start to see some changes on Monday and take a look at the heat index. Tomorrow is not likely to be a heat advisory at 101. But once we pass 105 say Saturday and then again Sunday at around 108. Those are likely to be days when we have a heat advisory. We'll be watching to see if the weather service issues those. A decent chance of afternoon and evening storm Saturday and Sunday too. With a 50 to 60 percent chance. We'll talk more about our rain potential coming up. Ken. Elizabeth we continue to follow that breaking news of I-95. We're talking about I-95 South. The entire lanes of I-95 Southbound are closed south of Fayetteville. We're talking about exit 41. That's a whole county exit. Drivers are being asked to go exit off of I-95 and get over to 301 South. Let's show you some video taken from Sky 5 just minutes ago. This is what the scene looked like in courtesy of Sky 5. A couple of trackless trailers right there. Apparently crashing through the concrete barriers there on the I-95 South. It involves a FedEx truck as you just saw right there and another truck. You can see them spilling their load. No movement whatsoever on I-95 Southbound right now. Just south of Fayetteville. So keep that in mind. Again that detour is around Highway 301 South. That'll get you around this mess and back up to I-95 South. Else around the triangle. What you see right now just local disabled vehicles and crashes. Not really going to affect your morning commute this morning. We are seeing things thinning out a bit on the south side of the Belt Line which is great news. But we're still seeing a bit of a slowdown on the north side of the Belt Line.
