today's a W-R-L weather alert day we have a heat advisory in effect for most of the viewing area it'll feel like as hot as a one oh six I'll walk you through the heat index hour by hour coming up a major road in Johnson County's closed this morning after a truck brought down utility lines the backups expected for your morning commute and two people are hurt after an early morning house fire and Durham coming up what we know about the damage and a scary moment for a driver on I-40 near Clayton as a crowbar flies through the air and crashes into the wheel windshield her reaction to this terrifying experience in a story that you'll see only on W-R-A-L. Good morning everyone it is six o'clock we will walk you through what's going to be a hot and humid Wednesday with a new heat advisory in place I'm Renee Chiu and I'm Jeff Hogan thanks for making us part of your Wednesday and that has led us right into this W-R-L weather alert day Elizabeth Gardner and the W-R on the severe weather center with what we're facing you can feel it as soon as you step out the door it feels stickier than it did yesterday so that increase in our humidity is gonna bump up our heat index it's gonna feel like 103 to 106 across our area this afternoon we take a live look at Durham right now and a pretty sunrise in progress but that's Sun's gonna be pretty brutal for us today there's enough moisture in the atmosphere here our dew point is 73 that's a high dew point for us even this time of year I'm just creating some low cloud cover in a few places not here in Durham but right here in Raleigh we started to see a deck of low clouds develop and that may keep our temperatures warming up as quickly but it's still not going to keep us from reaching that heat advisory criteria this afternoon right now it's 77 in Durham Raleigh 75 in Fayetteville and in Rocky Mountain so it's an impressive feel as you step out the door this morning it'll feel like 101 by lunchtime and feeling like 103 to 104 in the triangle could feel like 106 in our southern counties that are in that heat advisory as well so a hot day for us today we'll see a high temperature right around 100 we do have a cold front that's on the way that's gonna bring us a little relief for tomorrow better chance for showers and storms we'll take a look coming up Ken at 601 Elizabeth we continue to follow breaking news down there in Johnston County Cleveland Road shut down in both directions near highway 42 Nick Pearlland is there in the wriel breaking new strikers so Nick walk us through what happened and set the scene for us okay and you can see behind me this red dump truck and early this morning at around one it actually tore down some of the utility lines we're gonna get behind the camera and show you a little bit of what I'm talking about and you can see that dump truck is and as I zoom in here you're gonna see those utility lines torn down and scattered near the road here on Cleveland Road now like Ken was saying this stretch of the road is blocked off and as I pan over you can see Johnston County Sheriff's office here blocking this road to make sure nobody enters we're still working to find out when exactly this will open up but there is a detour a little bit further down the road on technology drive but again we're gonna continue to monitor this all morning for you reporting live in Johnston County Nick Pearlland wriel news of course back here in the wriel traffic center you can see what we're talking about that's Cleveland Road that's technology drive right there that Nick talked about in terms of that being the detour will continue to monitor technology drive to make sure that's free and clear for you this morning else running along the triangle you're seeing that slowdown right there it's actually just a slowdown nighttime construction there on the belt line just between Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street that's gonna clear up shortly nothing to worry about and all the other major routes are delay free at this hour. Ken thanks this heatwave we're experiencing is in only dangerous for our bodies on this WRA weather alert day now is the time to take care of your car. WRA's Laura Levine is at a repair shop in Raleigh and Laura mechanics are anticipating more repair calls. The RNA I called around and spoke to five different repair shops including Mission Valley here behind me all telling me that they do expect to see more customers as the temperatures continue to rise including today on what is going to be triple digit heat with that heat index so our car has been parked here for about two hours now I want to show you just how hot it is we're talking about temperatures right now almost 80 degrees at 6 a.m. so imagine how hot your car can get in the middle of a day like today that could have a huge impact on your car battery causing it to drain so we came here as we saw mechanics working on some dead batteries they tell us that heat can affect the chemical process inside the battery making it difficult for it to hold a charge and produce power. It's important to get your vehicles inspected. AAA says doing things like checking your batteries your tires and even brakes could be done right in your driveway with four to July travel picking up soon they expect to rescue nearly 800,000 stranded drivers during the nine-day holiday period because of heat-related car issues. Triple digit heat I mean that's just up I mean that's bad enough already and then add to the fact that we're talking about even holiday travel if you get stuck on the road during holiday travel you're going to have more and more vehicles on the road it's going to take you know us it's going to take rescuers longer to get to you. And she says it's really important to have an emergency kit in your car stocked up with plenty of water but to avoid that terrible situation all together get your car inspected. What a terrifying moment on i40 watch this left side of the well it's a crowbar flying through the wind shield of a moving car it happened to a WRL employee as she was driving on i40 east toward Clayton and a close-up look at the damage shows that crowbar hit the driver's side right where Diane Hyla was sitting. It was passing 306 I typically could off at 309 and just cruising along and all of a sudden I saw this projectile thing coming at me and i covered my face and said a prayer she was understandably shaken up thankfully though not hurt it appears another vehicle on the highway hit that crowbar sent it up flying into the air and into Hyla's windshield she said she'll be responsible for paying the damages glad our work made us safe. Goodness so glad too and she's so important to our team here right like someone had a final destination good morning i'm chris loving good here giving you a look at one of the things i'm tracking this morning the new home sales report expected out by the US Census Bureau today this is essentially what it'll kind of look like but this is from last month just to kind of give you perspective essentially we're seeing that last month that number was at 634 000 in terms of new home sales and we're only going to see at least projected increase of about 640 000 home sales total there the National Association of Realtor said the median price for existing home sales is up six percent from a year ago something to think about as well the new report is slated out at about 10 o'clock this morning and i want to leave you with one more thing here just because we're always trying to look at the stock market here and where the futures are this is kind of gives you a snapshot how things are performing in the overnight hours Verizon will need to pay a million dollars after a 9-1-1 outage that affected six states including North Carolina. WRL is the only station tracking the cancer cases since Poe Hall was closed 210 people have told 500 side they developed cancer after working or studying in that building. French president Emmanuel Macron has also said the ceremony could be moved from the send to an enclosed stadium if the security risk seems too great. Peyton Manning will co-host the opening ceremony of the Paris olympics and he's excited to be a part of what promises to be a grand spectacle with the world's greatest athletes. I'm envious of these athletes I would argue every athlete you know comes out of some sort of a tunnel or a locker room something kind of before the moment right I would argue that being on a boat on the river sand might be the coolest tunnel I think in sports history. Post Malone is coming to rally and presale tickets will be available today. The grammy nominated performer announces tour dates with a stop at coastal credit union music park he'll perform there october 5th he will also be performing in charlotte post Malone is expected to release his first country album in august six eighteen the time right now we'll have some cooler days ahead this summer today's not one of them elizabeth gardener is in the wrr severe weather center with that weather alert day heat advisory yes heat advisor for most of the viewing area i don't feel like 103 to 106 closer to 103 or 104 in the triangle closer to 106 or so and some of our southern counties of our heat index forecast it's going to feel like a 100 by 11 a.m. and that's when the advisory kicks in again in the triangle will feel like 103 to 104 for most of the afternoon and if you remember um heat is cumulative the impacts of heat on your body are cumulative so the more days in a row you're exposed to intense heat like this the more likely you are to succumb to heat related injuries we hit 100 on sunday so if you're one of those people who has to work outside or spend a lot of time outside maybe you've been fine so far this week but as the heat continues you may be more and more susceptible to a heat exhaustion or heat stroke so just be careful out there we're waking up to cloud cover in a lot of places this morning early early on it was clear but we have so much moisture in the atmosphere that as the sun is starting to come up we're seeing some of this cloud cover goldsboro an apex seeing mostly cloudy skies as well as chapel hill courtesy of top of the hill restaurant and they're in fayetteville at our newsroom our next best rain chance comes tomorrow we've been waiting for it it is not going to be a widespread soaker unfortunately we're just going to see some scattered thunderstorms the front will stall over us into friday and saturday and continue that chance of some showers and storms but again i can't promise that everybody is going to see rain out of this front it has been causing us some severe storms back across parts of the mid west the orange shaded area is a severe thunderstorm watch and a lot of severe thunderstorm warnings there those yellow boxes that are popping up and we do have a small chance of severe storms here as well at 10 a.m that front is starting to drop into our area tomorrow a few scattered storms possible right around lunchtime and then it intensifies a little bit in our eastern counties and settles settles down a little bit actually by the time we get to five o'clock or so then on friday we have the chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm as well during the afternoon looks like the coverage probably won't be quite as much on friday we have a level one risk for severe storms from edgecombe county all the way down our i-95 quarter down towards uh Cumberland county and hoke county so really along in east of i-95 and it's the typical threats when damage would be the biggest issue couldn't rule out an isolated storm today but we'll have a better chance tomorrow at 50 percent and then it's a 30 to 40 percent chance friday saturday and sunday we could over the next five or six days end up seeing as much as an inch of rain in parts of our viewing area total we definitely need that rain of course it's been very very dry it's likely to continue to be dry uh through the first uh week of july with that above normal temperatures continuing in the tropics things have been fairly quiet we do have a 20 percent chance of some development down in the gulf of mexico again 100 today with that to heat advisory and effect it's going to be a hot weekend too temperatures in the upper 90s will walk through the heat index for the next few days coming up kid all right let's put that 621 we continue to follow that breaking news out of johnston county this morning cleveland road shut down in both directions uh for uh near highway 42 let's give you a live look at that scene right now you can see the that uh dump truck apparently had its bed up and pull down some uh telecommunications line along cleveland road the crews are uh right there now trying to clear that scene but again uh cleveland road shut down in both directions uh detour is on technology drive for those of you uh who use uh cleveland road in the morning as your morning commute so again technology drive it's your uh detour this morning so keep that in mind else right along the triangle and surrounding community to see all the major routes that delay free this morning which is a good thing right let's take you outside right now and give you a live look at i-40 and airport boulevard traffic is definitely picked up but you have a morning fight on your way to the airport this is exactly what you want to see heard after a house fire in derm early this morning one of them has severe burns what we know about what caused this fire and the condition of those people and it's a WRL weather alert day we have a heat advisory in effect for most of our viewing area it's going to feel like 103 to 106 this afternoon and i'll show you how long this dangerous heat will continue so when i was looking to transfer it was um a lot of one-on-one and it didn't feel like i got lost in a huge university because i knew that if i came here there was going to be someone i could talk to about every aspect of the courses i needed to take but also too i loved the slower classroom sizes and i liked how interactive and immersive all of the learning was going to be it wasn't just going to be me sitting in a room with a couple hundred people and a professor who didn't know my name to find out more about transferring to William he's university visit peace.edu
