Coverage you can count on. Breaking news this noon, leaders in Johnston County meeting right now have just approved a package to help a major employer add hundreds of jobs in our area. We're live with the key details of that discussion. Plots, dramatic images of a restaurant in Durham after a driver slammed into the building overnight. We're asking the manager what's next for the business and. And our heat wave continues today. Our heat index is going to feel like close to 100. I'll show you when we could actually see some showers and storms. It might cool us down just a bit. We're experiencing some brutal heat right now at noon to the point that you need to take precautions when you head outdoors. Hello everyone, I'm Renee Chiu. And I'm Jeff hoping you can expect that heat index to climb to triple digits this afternoon or near there. Meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner is in the WREL severe weather patio right now and look at how hot it's going to feel the rest of the week Elizabeth. It's going to be just as hot as it has been over the weekend and we're going to see that for the next several days. We take a live look at Fayetteville because I wanted to show you the cloud cover. Notice there's a good bit of cloud cover there in Fayetteville and we're seeing the same thing here on the weather patio. Now we've seen the clouds thin from time to time and when the clouds thin boy, it makes all big big differences as you might expect. So it is tolerable to stand on the patio right now. The temperature is 92. The humidity or the dew point has dropped down to 67. Now this morning early on our dew point was at 75. That is really high 67 puts us definitely on the steamy side, but we're out of the tropical side. So I mean, for what that means, it just means that it won't feel quite as hot as it did yesterday. Yesterday we hit 100 and it felt more like 105 or hotter. So it just depends on where you are. So it feels like 95 in Raleigh, but it feels like 88 in Roxborough. It feels like 99 in Fayetteville. It feels like 104 in Rocky Mountain. So it just depends on how high that dew point is based on where you are around the triangle. It is likely to feel like triple digits this afternoon, at least for a little while. And then once we get to say eight o'clock, nine o'clock, it starts to feel more like upper eighties. We also have the chance of a few light showers. Right now we're seeing a few isolated showers and some of our far southern counties are going to walk you through that coming up on future cast. But our rain chances from here on until around 5 or 6 o'clock are going to be 30 to 40%. So we'll have that chance of some showers and storms, especially in our south and eastern counties. You can see that most of our eastern counties along at East Divine 95 are under a level one risk. So we'll walk through that and talk about what we could see later on coming up. Talk about precautions here. Anyone working outside today needs to take it slow and stay hydrated. The city of Raleigh is setting an example asking outdoor employees to work at a safe pace and asking residents to be patient if their trash is collected a little later in this weather. Even if you are outside for fun, you need to be on top of your heat exposure coming up at 1230. Laura Levine has suggestions for keeping yourself and your family safe. Breaking news in Johnston County officials have approved an incentive package to offer Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk benefits to expand its plant there. Our NC Capital team broke the news last week that the company's plans to expand would bring about a thousand more jobs to the area. WRL Sean Gallagher joins us live now from Johnston County and Sean. What else do we know about the plans? Yeah, well, there is a lot of excitement about this incentive package that the Board of Commissioners just passed. It includes a plan for Novo Nordisk to commit to 12 more years here in the county and it's an investment north of a billion and a half dollars and it could bring at least a hundred jobs. But like you said, we're hearing very many more that could be coming here to Johnston County. Now Novo Nordisk is the manufacturer of a diabetes and weight loss drug like we go v and ozempic and it already has a site in Johnston and Durham counties where they employ more than 2,500 people. The Board of Commissioners calls this arguably the biggest project in North Carolina history. WRL reported it was an investment of a billion and a half dollars though officials here tell me it could be much, much more than that. It's an expansion that the commissioner here Butch Lauder tells me won't just benefit Johnston County, but really the entire state. You have people from 25 other counties who come to Johnston County to work. So yes, it is tremendous for not just Johnston County, but for the whole region and the state as well. Now Novo Nordisk will hold a more formal announcement about this expansion in just a couple of hours in nearby Clayton that starts at two o'clock and we'll bring you the latest from that later this evening. Sean Gallagher, WRL news Smithfield. A Durham restaurant is closed for the foreseeable future after a car slammed into the side of it. Mezcoleto's Fayetteville Street location has significant damage. WRL's Monica Casey is inside the restaurant right now. Monica, how are things looking there? Jeff, there is so much damage here. Take a look at this wall. They have to rebuild this entire thing. You can see they have the framing up now and a tarp covering that gaping hole, but there is still a lot of cleanup here to do. Here's what things look like last night when this happened. The manager here at Mezcoleto Antonio Rebus tells me they were closing up for the day with customers still in the parking lot around 1045. He was on the front patio when this happened and says customers told him the driver hit the train tracks at a high rate of speed and made a you crashing into the side of the building. Luckily, none of the employees or customers in the parking lot were physically hurt. There were about maybe five feet away from the impact. Luckily, they were fortunate enough to not get hurt at all. They are shucking up. We are trying to take the best precautions that we can to help them with with what happened last night. We've said police from headquarters heard this happen and we're here within minutes Durham police tell us that driver was taken to the hospital and cited for reckless driving and take a look at this. This is what was up against the wall in that other room in the kitchen there. So a lot of damage here, but luckily no one hurt. Rebus tells me construction could be complete by two o'clock this afternoon, but they will still need approval from the health department to reopen. So their reopening date is not set in stone just yet in Durham. Monica, please see several are young news. New details this noon on a story we've been tackling through the morning hours. Three people are in the hospital after shooting in a Raleigh parking lot. This happened around 11 p.m. at the fall center on falls of news road. Police were called to La Buena Vida and knew this hour. We've learned from the owners who say everyone associated with a restaurant is fine and it happened in the parking lot after the restaurant was closed. Police say a man and woman have not like threatening injuries. Another man is seriously injured. The W. Royal breaking news tracker responded to a crime scene at a shopping center parking lot, not far from there. Two people were shot there and a car crashed nearby. Both of those scenes played out near New Hope Church Road and Atlantic Avenue in Raleigh. W.R. L.S. Nick Pirlan was there and shares what we know about that large police scene. Raleigh police were busy early this morning investigating a very large crime scene at a shopping center right off of New Hope Church Road. We can show you this video from the W.R. A. L. breaking news tracker just so you can see for yourself just how large this crime scene was as Raleigh police tried to piece together what exactly happened early this morning. We do know two people were shot. They are expected to recover. Now I do also want to show you this video as well. This is a car crash that happened right off of New Hope Church Road right next to that shopping center where that shooting happened and the reason why this is important is because you can see Raleigh police here searching through this white car and taking pictures of it. Now we're still trying to learn for Raleigh police if they know if this crash had anything to do with that shooting that left two people hurt. We're going to keep asking for more information this morning in Raleigh, Nick Pirlan, W.R. L. News. The breaking news tracker also check out this house fire on across Link Road in Raleigh. Investigators have not said what may have started the fire or how badly damaged that home was. The state Senate is expected to vote today on how the state should spend a billion dollar surplus. The vote is another step in a standoff with the state house over how to spend the money. The chambers need to agree on a proposal for any of it to be spent, but lawmakers are still at odds over things such as extra raises for state workers. The new fiscal year begins in a week. Buckingham Palace says the 73-year-old royal was injured and received a concussion and an incident Sunday. The exact cause has not been announced, but there were horses in the area and the medical team said her head injuries were consistent with a possible impact from a horse's head or leg. A palace spokesperson says the king's sister is hospitalized solely for observation and is expected to make a full recovery. A fire inside a lithium battery plant in South Korea killed at least 22 people. The fire started overnight when a series of battery cells exploded inside a warehouse near Seoul. Dozens more workers are still concerned missing as firefighters check for more hotspots. No word yet on what sparked the explosions. Police in Arkansas are giving more details about a mass shooting that killed four people at a supermarket. State police say the suspected shooter started firing as soon as he got out of his truck in the parking lot Friday. They say he then went into the store, firing at both customers and employees. State police say they were on the scene three minutes after the first call. About 13 people were shot, including two officers. The suspected shooter, Travis Posey, faces four counts of capital murder. He's doing court today. Authorities say they don't know why he started shooting. The cargo ship that had brought down Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore is on the move right now. The Dolly left the port of Baltimore this morning and these are live pictures of it right now. We showed you this live this morning in the WR Live Center as it happened during our eight o'clock news. The ship is on its way to Norfolk, Virginia for repairs. That trip will take about 16 to 20 hours. The ship has been sitting in place for the last three months with its crew on board while federal agents investigated what happened when the ship hit the bridge. The U.S. is racing for what could be a monumental week for the Supreme Court. There could be several decisions in high-stakes rulings, including abortion access, social media and free speech, and the question of presidential immunity. Rebecca Castor has more on what we can expect to see as the justices' self-imposed deadline is just around the corner. The Supreme Court's summer session is nearing its end, but more than a dozen cases remain undecided, including one that could have a profound impact on the presidency. The justices are still weighing whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for actions he took while in office, a case that stems from the Capitol riot on January 6. The court has always shied away from sort of tackling this issue. They now have to. And that means they have to get it right. The court never gives advance notice on when specific rulings will be released, but it's possible this decision comes out just hours before the first presidential debate. Nobody's going to be watching the debate on Thursday night, right? Nobody. Will anybody be watching? While President Biden has certainly campaigned off Trump's legal issues ahead of the debate, he's keeping the abortion issue in the spotlight, out with a new campaign ad on the second anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Decades of progress shattered just because the last bag got four years from the White House. The justices still have yet to rule on another abortion related case this session, whether doctors and states with restrictive abortion laws can be forced under federal law to perform the procedure in a medical emergency. The government should not be telling women what to do with their bodies. That decision will likely come this week, along with rulings on other high profile cases related to social media regulations and free speech, homelessness and the opioid epidemic. I'm Eric Knuller in the WRAL Live Center. Just in the last couple of minutes, Vice President Kamala Harris continuing to press many of those points around abortion rights. You see right here, her speech just wrapped up here. The Vice President looking to highlight the Biden administration's commitments to protecting both abortion rights and rights to contraception. Harris, hopeful they could use this as an effective wedge issue as we get closer and closer to November and closer and closer to that first presidential debate. And Eric, we are also seeing events looking at that anniversary of the ruling today here in Raleigh. And the NC Values Coalition gathered women from across the state this morning to talk about the effect of the DOV's decision, which stated there is no constitutional right to an abortion. Some focused on the changes in state law, others spoke about their personal experiences. In this afternoon, the state branch of the National Organization for Women will lead a reproductive rights rally in March. It starts at three outside the state legislative building. We take you outside right now, Elizabeth Gardner's in the WRL weather patio right now. Before it gets too hot, are we there yet? Elizabeth? Yes, we're definitely here. Which is why we're in this shirt and not a dress. What we're looking at right now, though, is some cloud cover. And we talked about that in the beginning of the newscast. And that is making it feel tolerable out here right now. It's also bringing a few stray showers. Boy, we need the rain. And it also helps to keep things a little bit cooler. Let's start off by heading down to the south. And you can see a little bit of lightning and thunder just south of Rayford moving toward Parkton and Hope Mills. We're moving right to the south of Fayetteville. So a thunderstorm there. There's going to be some brief heavy rain and some breezy conditions. Winds may gust up to around 40 miles per hour or so with this first round of cells. Now, a little later this afternoon, when we get even hotter out, some of those cells could produce winds up to 60 miles per hour. And of course, that's our severe weather criteria. So a little bit of rain down there in the south. There's also some up to the north. It's just started to pop up. You can see a Murfreesboro. It's just outside of our viewing area. There's a little thunder and lightning with that. So a little bit of rain in the south. There's a little bit of rain out there in the south. There's a little bit of rain in the south. Okay, we're already in the 90s at 1230 and the heat is definitely a danger today. It's even more dangerous when you talk about the cumulative effect over a number of days. A meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner is here with a look at how long we could be feeling this extreme heat Elizabeth. We hit 100 yesterday for the first time this year. We may see more of that Wednesday. It could put us at 99 or 100 again. This is how it feels as you're stepping out the door right now. It's 92 in the triangle. It feels like 95 in Durham and Raleigh. It feels like 100 in Clinton. It feels like 104 in Rocky Mountain, 99 in Goldsboro, 97 in the South Hill. And this is just going to continue through the day today. It'll feel like 99 to 100 once we get into the middle of the afternoon. And there's a possibility that we would have a few isolated thunderstorms. We've seen a few of those popping up already. We'll touch on that a little bit more coming up in just a while. But experts always urge, you know, the longer you're exposed to the heat, the more you are subjected to heat-related illnesses. And we're going to see that opportunity really all week long. We don't really see a break from the intense heat all the way through the weekend and beyond into July. This is really the kind of heat where you need to be taking all the necessary precautions when you go outside. And WRS Laura Levine explains people are at risk for heat-related illnesses if they don't take this seriously. Excessive heat can really take a toll on your body if you're not careful. That's what doctors are saying as we're here at Nightdale Station Park behind me. You can see the playground and the splash pad. This is going to be a very popular area throughout the day. As many people try to beat the heat. But this heat wave will have temperatures feeling like the triple digits. We're talking about 100 degrees today. So earlier today we saw people coming out even before the sun came to get that workout in an exercise. First responders and hospitals have already seen an influx of patients for this month, anticipating to see more in the coming days. With County EMS told WRL News they received eight heat-related calls on Saturday and they've treated more than 20 patients because of this since the start of June. Dr. JJ Hoff with Duke University Hospital says knowing the symptoms and pre-hydrating is key. Very often in the early stages of heatwaves like this we... You don't really see people come in saying that they're here because they're hot but what you do see is a little more people here for things like light-headedness and dehydration and things of that nature where they're starting to feel the effects. And he says if you or someone you know begins to feel overheated, it's important to take immediate action by what they call evaporative cooling by throwing some cold water on someone, taking a nice damn towel and placing it on their body, or just having a nice fan to cool off. Thanks for the Veeam, WRL News in Nightdale. A reminder to be careful if you're headed to the beach to cool down lifeguards along our coast, stay busy over the weekend. They had to make nearly 60 rip current rescues. On Saturday in New Hanover County there were 30 rescues at Carolina Beach, 22 rescues at Currie Beach, and six rescues at Ritesville Beach. Red flags are flying at beaches along our coast to warn about the dangers of rip currents, and when people stay out of the water, lifeguards say these warnings should be taken seriously. Our county by county coverage takes us to Orange, More, and Wilson Counties. In Orange County police are helping people cope with the weather, officers are collecting new fans, and window AC units for people who need relief from the heat. You can drop off a donation at the police station on Churton Street through Friday. More county leaders passed a new budget that lowered property taxes. Property tax rate drops by two cents next year. Even so, the budget adds EMS positions and funds the requests from the Sheriff's Office and Fire Department. This is the Rapid Dam in Minnesota, Blue Earth County, about two hours outside of Minneapolis. Officials there say this dam is in imminent failure condition. You can see the water absolutely rushing around the outside. Over what would normally or formally have been a spillway. Those waters literally cutting into that cliffside there. Authorities there have notified residents downstream. But as of right now, it doesn't seem like there have been any mandatory evacuations at this point. This flooding comes as this entire region has been slammed with torrential rains. The impact of which, while you see it right there, we're going to stay on top of the situation in the Live Center. The nearly $320 million budget is up about 3% from last year's budget. That vote will happen at a meeting that starts at 6.30 tonight. Well this is chaos during the final round of the PGA tournament in Connecticut this weekend. Check it out, there were six climate activists that ran out onto the course on that final green there. Let out some sort of powder, white and orange powder on there. It happened as a tournament leader, Scotty Sheffler and Tom Kim were tied. And trying to finish their round and figure out who would win. Police quickly moved in and stopped the protest. A group calling themselves Extinction Rebellion claimed responsibility. They say they want to bring action to the worldwide danger of climate change. Your boarding cup of Joe is the most consumed drink in America. Yet researchers say they don't know much about it. That's why the University of California Davis opened the first research center devoted to the study of coffee. The facility has various chemical labs and roasting rooms. The head of the facility says their goal is to elevate coffee by creating a research pipeline that can support the drink in the future, much like the industry around wine. It's actually more difficult to make a good cup of coffee than it is to make a good bottle of wine. And when I say that to my wine colleagues they get all riled up because they know how difficult it is to make wine. It turns out coffee is even more complicated. Future plans for the center include adding a greenhouse to grow beans on campus and perhaps a degree in coffee science. Just in the last couple of minutes we've confirmed new details about a teenage boy bit by a shark at North Topsole Beach taking a live look out there right now from the Surf Chex Cam here. We're told this happened yesterday right around 1230. It happened right here, beach access for right near the North Topsole Park there. We're told this was a 14-year-old boy who was bit. That child had a pretty good gash on his leg according to officials there. Passers by on that beach were able to apply pressure. And there happened to be first responders already in that area for another call who were able to rush into the scene and provide aid. That boy was taken to the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital for treatment. We're still working to learn more about that boy's condition here, but we're told this was not a very big shark, likely just a small shark that latched onto his leg. We'll bring you new details as we get them. Eric, thanks. The Paris Olympics are a little over a month away and Team USA is taking shape. This was a significant weekend for swimming, diving, track and field. Here's a look at how some of our local athletes did. Yeah, my name's started with diving. Andrew Capopianco from Holly Springs is headed to Paris this summer. He made the team. On the USA dive team won the men's three-meter springboard competition at the Olympic Trials Sunday. Capopianco won a silver medal in synchronized springboard of the Tokyo Games three years ago. A comeback story in the pool for NC State alum Ryan Held. WRLL has followed Held since its trip to the Rio Games in 2016. That's where he won gold as part of the four by 100-meter freestyle team. Then he did not get to defend that gold in Tokyo. A technicality kept him off the roster. Held is now 28, and he will go to Paris on that four by 100 team one more time. Former NC State swimmer Katherine Burkhoff is also representing the area in Paris. Five-time NCAA National Champion will represent the USA in the 100-meter backstroke. Burkhoff follows in footsteps of her father David. He's a four-time Olympic medalist. Two of those are from the 100-meter backstroke. The team USA track and field trials are now in full swing in Oregon. UNC's Ethan Strand will be racing for a spot on the Olympic team tonight. He qualified for the men's 1500-meter final with his performance at the trials on Saturday. And Raleigh native and Campbell University student Dominique Alexander competed in the men's 100-meter semi-final last night. Unfortunately, he did not qualify for the final. Two local women raced in the 400-meter final. Jamiesha Fours went to Jack Britt High School in Fayetteville. Conera Haynes is from Hope Mills. Unfortunately neither was able to secure a spot on the Olympic team. You can watch all the events from the trials right here on WREL. The track and field Olympic trials are on air starting at eight tonight. Have you ever stopped to think about what the athletes are eating to be able to perform at Olympic levels? It's a very different diet from what the average person eats when trying to stay in shape. There's more protein, more fluids, more sodium to replace what they lose in sweat. They can add anywhere up to six to eight thousand calories a day, possibly even more depending on their training. Nutritionists say food can mean that tenth of a second difference between athletes. Eight thousand galleries. Olympic teams from five countries, including the U.S., plan to bring their own air conditioners to the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The plans may undercut organizers trying to cut carbon emissions. Olympic planners say rooms in the athletes' village will already be cooled by a system of cooling pipes underneath the floors. Rooms would also have their own fans. Trying to stay cool when you're over there. Same thing here. Elizabeth Gardner is out on the WREL weather patio. Good to get a little breeze going there. I don't know if we're going to get it today though, Elizabeth. You know, it was a little breezy earlier, but I'll tell you, standing here in the garden right now, it is very still. We'll take a look at what is not still. That's what's happening on the radar. We did just a little while ago have a severe thunderstorm morning. We pulled this up and you can see there was a cell there up in the northeastern part of the viewing area. So let's zoom in on that. And technically the bulk of that warning is out of our viewing area. But you can see that cell that's just behind it. Definitely seeing some gusty winds there. Wind's gusting up to 40, 50 miles per hour in that cell that's moving just south of Murfreesboro, just southeast of Roanoke Rapids or some thunder and lightning with that. That's going to be a pretty blustery spot there. Maybe a chance of having some damage. We'll watch and see if there's another warning that gets issued. Another warning issued up into Virginia sort of right along that same little spot. So there in our northeastern counties, watching for that potential. And then we'll head back down to the south. This one's looking a little bit more wimpy, but just south of Hope Mills. We have some rain there and a little bit of lightning. And we're going to see more and more of this developing. It's possible that we would see a line from Fayetteville all the way up I-95 back up toward Roanoke Rapids where we have the potential for some showers and storms to develop. We'll take a look at the big picture. And we did earlier this morning end up with some scattered storms along the southern portion of that front. And of course now we're starting to see some of that right along the rest of the front in our area. We'll move this forward and you can see some isolated showers and storms continuing there at two o'clock. And even at five o'clock, there's still some activity there showing up. But after that, we get to six or seven. It's pretty much over. We do have some slightly drier air that's moving in today. And we dropped from 75 for the due point this morning all the way down to 67 right now. This is an update from the Storm Prediction Center. They've put the coast in a level two risk for severe storms. None of our viewing area is in that level two risk. And it doesn't look like it's changed for our viewing area. But again, along in east of I-95, we do have that level one risk for severe storms. Here's a look at futurecast for Thursday. This is going to be our next best chance for showers and thunderstorms. And you can see at two o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday. We have that cold front starts to slide in. A better chance of seeing more widespread storms on Thursday. More folks may end up seeing storms than we're going to see today. Today is really going to be our eastern counties. Everybody's looking like a good chance of some storms on Thursday. Boy, we definitely need the rain. This is a live look at downtown Raleigh, a little bit of a breeze there. You can see the clouds and the flags moving a little bit. 40% chance today, 60% chance on Thursday. And in the meantime, 20 to 30% chance for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. We're not looking at a huge chance for rain, maybe except for a long in east of I-95. So from Rocky Mount to Goldsboro, parts of Johnston County down toward Fayetteville and Clinton. Anywhere from a half an inch to maybe three quarters of an inch for the rest of the viewing area. Looking awfully dry for the next five days. And we need the rain anywhere from zero to about 18% of our normal rainfall in the last 30 days. Of course, we've talked about the heat. It's going to feel like 100 this afternoon, 97 tomorrow, and the 105 on Wednesday and 106 on Thursday. And that's when we may have another heat advisory. We'll be watching for that Wednesday and Thursday. And it may be that we would have a weather alert day for one of those days. We'll let you know if that is the case when it gets closer. Still a small chance for storms on Friday and again on Sunday. But notice the heat does not go away overnight. Loser in the 70s and our afternoon highs are in the 90s.
