Your choice. Now breaking news from WRAL. Coverage you can count on. We've team coverage this morning after a violent night in Durham where six people have been shot in a matter of hours. Police are still on faith. They'll street right now where three people were shot. Another shooting happened on East Cornwallis Road left a two-year-old and two adults hurt. And it's a comfortable morning again. Our temperatures are mainly in the 60s with moderate humidity. But tomorrow we start to move into the potential for some dangerous heat. I'll show you when it really cranks up. And celebrating the life of Willie Mays, the legend, honored along with other Negro League stars during an emotional ceremony in Alabama. That was last night. We'll bring you that special ceremony. Coming up, thank you for joining us on your Friday morning. I'm Michelle Makonicki and for an HU. And I'm Jeff Hogan. Thanks for making this part of your Friday. I think we've been mentally prepared for this heat all week long coming. It's made it a little bit easier, I guess, Elizabeth, but it's about to go to another level, right? You know, the one thing that's been nice this week is our humidity hasn't been terribly high. It hasn't been really low, but it's been kind of middle of the road. So yes, it's been hot. Maybe it's helped us kind of prepare for what's likely to be a dangerously hot weekend, especially Sunday and Monday. It's a beautiful start here in Roxbury. You can see the sun just about to pop over the horizon and the flag just sort of sitting there in the little bit of a light breeze. 67 right now on the triangle with a 2.63, which puts us kind of in the middle of the road there. 65 in Fayetteville, it's 61 in Roxbury, 65 Rocky Mountain, 64 in Southern Pine. So it feels pretty comfortable to start with, but we won't climb to 93 this afternoon. And you know, if you're out about this evening, you know, six, seven o'clock still going to be close to 90 degrees. Of course, we're watching dangerous heat potential for the weekend. It will be hottest on Sunday and Monday. We'll talk about what it could feel like with the heat index coming up. All right, Elizabeth. 601 was seen relatively quite start to your morning commute on a Friday morning. Many of you are working from home. We get that, but some of you have to go out. I understand that we have been looking at some a bit of a whenever we see purple on the map. That means something is happening there. And this is part of public part of some overnight construction that's going to clear up shortly between Wade Avenue and just beyond the Hillsborough Street. That's also part of a new traffic pattern that DOT announced just a few days ago. So we'll keep an eye on that for you. In case that's part of your morning commute, we're going to make sure you know exactly what's going on. Also in Durham and Chapel Hill, all the major routes that delay free at this hour. Breaking news out of Durham, six people were shot in just a matter of hours in two separate shootings. There were three people shot about 330 this morning on Fayetteville Street. Well, about seven hours before that, a two year old girl and two adults were shot on East Cornwallis Road. We've team coverage for you this morning. We start with WRL's Heidi Kirk on Fayetteville Street and Heidi, a lot of evidence markers, a lot of police officers there for hours now. Jeff, we got here a couple of hours ago and it's been an active investigation ever since I'm going to step out of the way and show you the scene over here. Again, this is on Fayetteville Street and Linwood Avenue in Durham. Now that shooting happened in approximately 330 this morning. When officers arrived, they found three victims, two adult males and an adult female. Now those two male victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but the female was transported with life threatening injuries. Now, of course, this is an ongoing investigation, as you mentioned, and you can see right behind me, there's a lot going on here and we're working to find the answers alongside police so we can inform you as to what happened. And if you happen to know anything, Durham police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Heidi Kirk, WRL News Live in Durham. Nick Pearland also in Durham and the WRL breaking news tracker, Nick police are investigating an earlier shooting that left a two year old girl with life-threatening injuries and also hurt two adults well. That's right, Michelle. That shooting happened at around eight at the cadence apartment in Durham. And like you said, a toddler injured in this shooting. They're just heartbreaking details coming out of Durham this morning. And we're very worried about how that girl is doing. I do want to get you to this video from the WRL breaking news tracker to show you what this looked like. When this first happened, you can see Durham police in the parking lot of this apartment complex and taping off a large area of it as they try to investigate what exactly led to this shooting. We do know three people were shot, a man, a woman and of course that toddler, a two year old girl who was also injured in this shooting. The two adults are expected to be okay. But like I said, we're very concerned about how that two year old is doing right now. That toddler has very serious injuries and obviously we're all hoping that she's gonna be okay. We are still here at the Durham police department. We're trying to get more information about what exactly led to this shooting. And if Durham police have any idea who is responsible for this shooting, we'll keep pressing for more information. Reporting live in Durham, Nick Perle in WRL news. Parts of the Texas Gulf Coast look like this. They're dealing with the aftermath of the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. Alberto caused flooding during high tides in Galveston and other coastal communities. And some areas were drenched by more than four inches of rain before that storm weakened. Alberto made landfall in Mexico as a tropical storm yesterday morning. Mexican authorities blamed the storm for at least four deaths. That includes two young people who are electrocuted while riding bicycles in the rain. The storm brought heavy rain to regions of that country that have been parched by a recent drought. Next week, First Lady Jill Biden will pay a visit to North Carolina. WRLL learned that she'll travel to Charlotte on Tuesday. She'll be in our state to deliver remarks at a political finance event. The visit comes just a couple of days before the presidential debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. President Biden plans to visit Raleigh next Friday the day after that debate. Now we've learned more about NC State's plans for the future of Po Hall. That's the building where hundreds of people worked or studied and now believe it gave them cancer. NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson put out a public explanation with plans to gut that building. Alumni are fighting to keep the building the way it is so they can have it independently tested. Attorneys fighting NC State in court say the school hasn't done enough testing to have a full picture of the problem. Today, the UNC Board of Governors will elect a new chancellor for North Carolina A&T State University. The school's current chancellor, Harold Martin, is retiring at the end of the academic year. The virtual meeting gets started at 1130 this morning. Takeback Title IX is a message from a coalition of athletes, coaches, and advocates who are on a national tour opposing changes to the policy. The Biden administration recently rewrote the law, prioritizing gender identity over sex. The group has called our bodies our sports. It made a stop in Chapel Hill last night. Former UNC women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchle joined them there. She says it comes down to a fairness issue. We spoke with representatives with the National Center for Transgender Equality who said rhetoric like this is harmful to trans athletes. But to say we should have our community separated from cisgender community in terms of the sports world it goes against what Title IX stands. If female athletes have to play transgenders that it's not fair and it's not equal and it's not anywhere close to being a level playing field. The new Title IX rules also require schools to take immediate action to end any sex discrimination and protect against retaliation for exercising rights. The changes will take effect August 1st. Time is 6.07. Good morning. I'm Chris Lovengood giving you a look here in the W.R.E.L. Live Center at U.S. Futures ahead of the stock market opening today. Little changes that we're seeing here mostly in the red though and this is ahead of several different reports coming out regarding their economy including the U.S. leading economic indicators report from the conference board existing home sales from the National Association of Realtors and both the S&P flash U.S. manufacturing and services purchasing manager indices. A notable other thing that we've seen here is that NVIDIA the chip maker seems to have lost about a drop of 3.5 percent yesterday but it's still up 160 percent year to date so still impressive in that regard. Thanks Chris. A special tribute to Willie Mays was part of Major League Baseball's celebration of the Negro League's Mays Sun Michael addressed the crowd before a game between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals in Birmingham Alabama. Mays played at the stadium Rickwood Field when he made his debut with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1947. Some surviving Negro League players were on hand for the special event. The Negro League's featured black players for the first half of the 20th century before Jackie Robinson broke the Major League color barrier. Today there is a new route landing at RDU. The first direct flight from Panama City will land in a few hours. The Copa Airlines flight will land at 1.30 this afternoon. It's a new flight that we reported was announced back in February. People can make that trip from Panama to and from RDU. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Coming up stage Chad Treasurer Dale Falwell has accused of misusing his state issued vehicle. The support that he's getting from a former state official who faces similar accusations. And Charlie Woods is following in his dad's footsteps. He's got the eye of the tiger I think. The big championship tournament he's preparing for next month. And today we'll feel relatively comfortable compared to what we're seeing over the weekend. Temperatures in the 60s this morning but we're headed into some dangerous heat potentially by the weekend. I'll show you what it will feel like with the heat index. As you get into your cartoon to WRAL news plus on your radio in Raleigh on 99.3 FM in Durham 96.5 FM and everywhere on 101.5 HD 3. Breaking news the designer can give you the kitchen of your dreams. This is a live view of Carolina Beach. That sun just started to pop up on a few clouds. They're looking absolutely beautiful. With intense heat here over the weekend you may be thinking about headed to the beach. It will be a little bit cooler but look at this. We have a tropical system that could have some tropical characteristics down near Florida that is creating high rip current danger all up and down the east coast including our beaches. It is not a weekend that you want to get in the water yesterday. There were 25 rescues for rip currents at Carolina Beach. You really want to be careful this weekend because it's not likely to change. It's going to be hot at the beaches. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s for Saturday and Sunday as well. If you can get in the water up to your knees you'll be okay. Kind of hot in the mountains too. Temperatures in the low 90s for tomorrow. Happening out in the WRA traffic setting. You know 10 minutes ago we told you about that slowdown that we were seeing in the area of Wade Avenue right between Wade Avenue and Hillsborough Street. Well look at this. It's completely clear up just as we thought. It's part of the overnight construction just in case you were headed that way before six o'clock. We let you know what you expected and now you can not not worry about that area anymore. It's free and clear. Also around the triangle all the major rounds are delay free of this hour. Thanks Ken. Triple digit temperatures are expected in some areas of California today which could hinder firefighting efforts. Firefighters are trying to get the sites fire in Colosia County under control. It's burned over 19,000 acres so far in New Mexico. The south fork and salt fires are zero percent contained as of this morning. At least two people have died as a result and around 1,400 structures have been destroyed. Yesterday the FBI announced it's joining the investigation into the cause of those fires. Elizabeth was just talking about this. A family is in morning after a vacationing couple drowned after getting caught on a rip current on a Florida beach. They were there with their six children. Authorities say the couple and two of their kids got caught in that rip current. The children were able to escape the current but their parents were not. Lifeguards pulled them from the water unconsciously later died at a hospital. Local authorities are helping the kids and other family members as they make their way to Florida. The state treasurer is defending himself. He was accused of using his state vehicle for personal use. He's also getting support from the former state auditor. You may remember Beth Wood crashed a state-issued vehicle into a parked car after a holiday party. Then a state investigation found that she was using state-owned vehicles for personal trips. Now state treasurer Dale Falwell faces similar accusations. Wood says there are too many inconsistencies in how the state oversees this. I for 14 years turned in mileage logs. Dale Falwell for eight years has turned in mileage logs and department administration staff never once brought it to our attention that we were doing something wrong. Not sloppiness on our part. No. It was trusting that people around us were doing their job. Falwell released a statement last night saying that his staff is assisting in compiling documentation to fully answer any outstanding questions and that he tried to be very careful in following published guidance. Tiger Wood's son Charlie is following in his footsteps. The 15-year-old has qualified for his first USGA championship event. He qualified for the US junior amateur in Oakland, California. It's happening next month. Tiger was 14 a year earlier when he qualified for his first US junior and he reached the semi-finals. This weekend is packed with a lot of live music, a big celebration also for pride month in downtown Raleigh. Yeah let's start with a country music concert at PNC arena. Pretty big story might have hurt of them. Tim McGraw brings his standing room only tour to PNC arena in Raleigh tomorrow. He'll be joined by special guests Carly Pierce and Timothy Wayne. And on Sunday, Willie Nelson will bring the Outlaw Festival to Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek. This year's event features Willie, Bob Dylan, and Robert Plant as well as Alison Krauss. The show starts at 5 p.m. And June is pride month. Tomorrow the Out Raleigh Festival is happening on Fadeville Street in downtown Raleigh. There will be live music, vendors, artists, a beer garden, and a children's zone. Admission is free and for more about these and other events you can go to WRAL.com and search out and about. Some of them will have some water stations as well set up so bring your disposable water can with you and you can fill it up at your leisure. Elizabeth Gardner is in the WRH Civil Weather Center right now with a look at our forecast here, the national picture here, Elizabeth. Well, let's start with a big picture of what's happening. We've had a big area of high pressure that's kept things hot for us. We're looking at now when are next chances of rain maybe? We have a low this developing that has a small chance of developing tropical character characteristics. It's going to bring some rain to Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, but probably not much rain for us. We take a look at the tropical outlook here and you can see this system has a 50% chance of developing tropical characteristics. No matter what, it's probably going to bring some heavy rain, but it will again most likely be to our South. And then another situation developing here where tropical storm Alberto developed and moved inland creating a lot of flooding over Mexico and even some of that in Texas. Another system could develop in the next few days in the same spot. This is a look at the model plots for that system that's starting to develop off the coast of Florida and Georgia. Notice how it swings inland and then in most cases, fizzles, there's some of the the model plots that kind of move along the coast of North Carolina, but this is not likely to be a system that really causes us much problem. You can see some of the rain associated with this starting today will push this into motion. You could see some of that rain moving inland around Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and possibly along the coast of North Carolina with a little bit of rain by Saturday. But by that point, the tropical characteristics are really pretty much fizzled out if we even see it developing into a tropical system. We may have a front that comes in on Monday. That's going to bring us the next best chance of rain here. We check the model plots for the second system down in the Gulf of Mexico, Bay of Campeche. And again, it moves up across the same area where we saw the heavy rain and flooding in Mexico. They can see another up to five inches with this system in the next seven days and in South Texas, it may be just two or three inches. So hopefully they wouldn't see a repeat of that flooding. But for Mexico, adding another five inches to what they've already seen could cause more problems. Beautiful sunrise in Goldsboro, Apex, Chapel Hill, courtesy of top of the Hill restaurant. And of course, our newsroom there in Fayetteville, the tower in our backyard earlier this morning lit in blue. We have a dangerously hot weekend in our forecast. It's likely to feel like 102 on Saturday and 107 on Sunday. And that 107 could put us into a heat advisory. We'll watch for that. And the heat just doesn't stop Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Very hot conditions. As a matter of fact, Wednesday, we could reach 100 degrees and we will see slightly cooler temperatures on Thursday with that next front coming through. We'll follow that front. Here's Monday. You can watch that front coming across the mountains and well ahead of it. Some showers and thunderstorms. It's certainly not going to be enough to eliminate some of the drought situation that's starting to develop last week. We were almost completely clear and now we're back to abnormally dry conditions across a good chunk of our viewing area. In the last 30 days, we've only seen anywhere from 10 to 30 percent of our normal rainfall. So we are really hurting for rain. Besides Monday, we may also see some showers and thunderstorms next Thursday. Again, that's probably not going to erase the drought, but it should help, Ken. Oh, we're looking for that help. Elizabeth weather traffic every 10 minutes. Look at this on the traffic map this morning. Nothing but green showing up. And if you're getting ready to head out, of course, this is what you could expect. We like to see that none a problem. So in that regard, let's take you outside. Give you a look at our live traffic cameras this morning. Let's start with I 440 and Lake Boone trail with the westbound lanes coming toward us. Traffic has picked up just a little bit, but you can see it's moving at a steady clip. Similarly, this is I 40 and Wade Avenue this morning. The westbound lanes again coming toward us. Traffic picking up again, but moving rather smoothly in both directions. Good news. Thanks, Ken. A bill that would legalize medical marijuana in North Carolina clears one hurdle, but faces more ahead. Why some lawmakers in the state house say they won't get behind it.
