Breakfast with Tim Payne and Brent Costello. ♪ Good morning ♪ Now, to you Peter, this morning, he has just boarded his plane and just sent me a picture through, actually. It says, "See ya Friday, boys, be then bed." And he's lying down and he's got to screen up looking at something, but an amenio in his hand, Hamish, as well. So he's comfortable, which I'm very happy about. We're gonna talk some netball now here on SCN, Tazzy Breakfast, and join him on the line to preview the Tasmanian netball league Grand Final, which is taking place this weekend, is Northern Hawkes Superstar Ashmore. G'day Ash, welcome to the show. - Hi, how you going? - Going well, thank you. And congratulations, another Grand Final appearance for your Northern Hawkes, which is really exciting. What are you drinking in the water up there? You're just unbeatable at the moment, your Hawkes? - Yeah, I'm not too sure. I think it's a testament to all the hard work we've put in and the people behind the scenes we've put in for the last few years. - Absolutely, and then Cavaliers, of course, will join you in the Grand Final. They had a big win over Kingston on the weekend in the prelim, so that rivalry continues between the two Northern sides, doesn't it? - Yeah, no, it definitely does. I think it's a rivalry that's been going on. I mean, for as long as longer than I played state league netball, so it's definitely really positive that we've been like the two teams to beat for a long period of time now. - And a fitting Grand Final too, isn't it? Because your last two games have been super tight against cows, a one-goal win and a six-goal winner I think you've had. So what do you need to do this Saturday, I guess, to make sure you get the chocolate once again? - I think it's probably kind of cliche that we just need to make sure that we do all our normal things, right? And do all the basics well, and hopefully with that comes the rewards at the end of the day. - What's the rivalry like between yourselves and calves? Is it a friendly one, are you mates off the court or how does it all work? - I think, after most of us, it's definitely a friendly one. I think I'm pretty good friends with a few of the girls and I think a lot of the other girls that I play with are as well, but once we get on that court, it's a bit like white line fever. - And what about the motivation this weekend? - Obviously, any grand finals, huge, but the chance to win a three-peat potentially must be really driving the girls. - Like it definitely is, but I think also, like this is a new year, it's not that much of a new group, but we're still just focusing on that one game at the end of the day. - No, it's not about individual awards, but do you reckon you've done enough to win your fifth straight and I think six overall MVP title this year? - Um, I'm not, definitely not one for individual accolades, I think, at the end of the day, I'm going to be happy. We've got a premier hit medal around there, Nick. - Absolutely, no, you're a star though, that's an impressive record, so very humble about that. It's very, very impressive though. Hey, you got to be, to play the Melbourne Mavericks a few weeks ago, they reserved side as part of the Tazzy World Squad. So what was that experience like to be in a Super Netball curtain razor at My State Bank Arena? - That was awesome, it was really cool to be playing with some of those younger girls that are often coming to Netball Taz and again, such a quality side too, it's really cool to be able to push yourself to that level. - And I think last year when the diamonds were in town, we're covering this story, a mural was unveiled at the Hobart Netball Sports Center that featured you and Liz Watson too, the Aussie captain, of course. Do you ever think you'd be featured on a mural and have you gotten a chance to see it in person, you're sure? - I have seen it in person, it's actually not something I ever thought would happen to them. So when I found out it was a really big shock, but obviously very humble and very grateful to be put there. - Anything you would have changed about the way they drew you up? - No, I think it's fine, I think it's probably, not that I'm not grateful to be there, but I think there's plenty of people that have influenced Netball Tasmania and would deserve to be there also. - And the diamonds, obviously returned to Tasmania last October, a new partnership with the Mavericks here as well in the States. Do you feel like Netball's sort of in the strongest place, it's been in Tasmania for some time? - Yeah, no, I definitely do. And I think that was definitely shown to me when I got to play with some of those girls who are up and coming, their skills that not shocked me, but like almost made me feel proud, like 'cause I'm like 10 years older than most of them. So it was really cool to say that, yeah. - And what about Super Netball here in Tasmania? I think it's a no-brainer personally to get us our own team, especially with the support the Mabs had out there a couple of weeks ago. What are your thoughts on that? It would slot in nicely into the calendar, don't you think? - Oh, I definitely think so. I think Netball's such a huge, huge thing here and it'll give the young girls something to aspire to a lot more locally other than having to move away to actually go somewhere within Netball. - Just back on this weekend's Grand Fauna, what's the key to beating Cabs? Where have they sort of got you in the past? And what do you need to do to shut them down? - I think just making sure that we put that relentless suffocating pressure on them throughout the game and don't let anything get into our own game plan. I think that's where do we want to lost. - Who's the key players for both sides? Who's gonna be the ones that make the most impact do you think? - I think in the past when we played them, definitely when that child's back in that goalkeeper gold defence throw, she's relentless at the ball and she just gets the ball when you don't think she's going to get it. And then someone like an Ellie Marshall on the wing, they're being able to shut her opponent down too. But I think ultimately it's going to be a full team effort to get us across the line. - And I don't want to think too far ahead just yet, but if you manage to win, what's the celebrations typically like for a T&L premiership wind? The girls pretty good at party. - Yeah, no, we are pretty good. We do like to have a good time and enjoy each other's company after the game, that's for sure. - Very good. Well, all the best assets going to be an awesome Grand Fauna as it always is in the Tasmania netball league. As I said, a couple of close games against Cavs this year. So we're expecting another one in the big dance. Thanks for joining us here on SCN Tazzy Breakfast this morning and all the best on Saturday. - Thank you and thanks for having me. - Ashmore joining a superstar of Tasmanian netball will represent the Northern Hawks in this Saturday's Tasmanian netball league grand final.
