(upbeat music) - Hello and welcome back to Disc Golf Daily. I'm Brian Popwell-Frawley, and I am way too excited to talk to you about the preserve and all the excitement that happened this weekend in Minnesota. For me personally, I was filled with a lot of emotions this weekend. Had some friends there up in the top five that I was rooting for. We saw players high on emotions. Players were upset at themselves at points. Players were upset. Maybe a basket set at the point. Fans were very loud. It was great to see a great crowd on Sunday. Terry and Val and Nate, they were top level, if you will, for the weekend. So overall, I'm gonna go on a limb here and say on this date, 6.23.24. The preserve was the best event that we've had yet on the Disc Golf Pro Tour for this year. And we're gonna go into a little bit of the data later to back that up. But if you watched all three rounds, I'm sure you were as excited as I was. On Sunday, we had multiple lead changes. We had drama. We had young Luke Taylor doing great on the MPO side, who's coming in the top 10, three of his last three events. And then we had some questions about rules maybe too. I'm not sure. Not every Caddy had a bib on it. We got a message from one of our listeners. It was pretty interesting to me. Mid round, hey, why doesn't this Caddy have a bib on? Why doesn't that Caddy have a bib on? I don't know the rules when it comes down to that. Maybe somebody that's a little bit more excited can tell me more about those rules later on. But let's get into the thick of it, if you will. We were at the Preserve Chimneys. They're connected by Microsoft Teams. And after day one on the FPO side, we saw the top four as Missy, Holland and Maria Oliva. That being said, the final five holes really justified where that order was as far as Missy birding four of the final five, Holland birding three of the final five, Ohm birding two of the final five, and Maria actually bogeying two of the final five. So that order would have been a little bit different. Had those final five holes not played out the way that they did. But after round two, we saw some familiar names back at the top. We saw Missy Ganon and Holland Hanley two strokes apart with Lucky Lorentzen being three behind Holland and Owen Scoggins rounding out your top four. By round three, we had some swings to say the least. Holland started with a birdie. Missy did not get that birdie. Holland got another one later on that Missy didn't match. And by whole five, Holland and Missy were tied pretty thrilling for the fan. On the next hole, Holland went up one. On the next hole, Missy tied it. Couple of holes later, Holland went up one. On the couple of holes later, Missy ties it. Missy gets a bogey and then follows it up on the 14th hole with a birdie and Holland gets a bogey. Unfortunately, the next hole, Holland, gets a double bogey as well. And Missy pretty much bogeys in for the win. That was a pretty exciting round. The drama was there. It kept me captivated. Multiple lead changes throughout the time. I hope that you enjoyed that aspect of it, at least, if you were one of those fine people watching the event. Congrats to the big money, Missy, for getting the W. Couple of names we saw near the top. More importantly, the person that came in third, Rebecca Cox, continues to have maybe a breakout season, maybe most improved player. I don't know. You can't give her player the year 'cause she hasn't won anything, but she really has been most consistent player, maybe, which is awesome. She averaged 34 points over her rating again, even after her rating went up a couple of weeks ago there. Maria Oliva, who came in fourth, averaged 39 points over her rating, and name we haven't said too much this year, but as always back there, Kona Star Montgomery, she shot 44 points over her rating to another top 10 finish for her. Of course, with the ying, we do have the ying, and Alexis Manduano, Ally Smith, and Holly Finley, were your highest-rated players that did Miss Cash this week. On the MPO side, we saw a lot of that excitement as well. After day one, we saw Ben Callaway, Colerdahl, Kyle Klein, all shoot a minus 14, hot round. Ooh, and then Isaac Robinson rounding out your top four with a minus 13. By the time we got to the end of round two, we saw a lot of shifting, and we saw, unfortunately, Ben didn't have the greatest around, we saw Ricky Wesaki shoot a great and minus 11 to jump up on the card, get and burst shoot a minus 10, and Luke Taylor shoot a minus 10 as well, to move up to fourth position as well. For the fan, for the pundit, for the person that just loves disc golf like I do, and I hope you do, going into that final round, we were really blessed to see. We had a returning champion or a multiple-time champion. We had the United States champion, we had the world champion, and we had the guy that's coming off to disc golf pro-tour wins in Ganon Burr. For the person listening in round two, I think Nate Dawson, and maybe Terry, I don't know, but Nate Dawson is definitely saying it was Ganon Burr's kind of round to win, if you will, coming into the final round, and we saw everybody have a shot to win. Specifically, Matt Orum, who shot the hot round of the day at minus 12, he had a great section where he birdied eight in a row, and then birdied again the final three to put some pressure on that lead card that was jumping around. Luke Taylor did the same thing, shooting a minus nine, keeping the chase card fire going, Anthony Burrell shot a minus 10, keeping that chase card going, but that lead card at one point Isaac was winning, at one point Kyle was winning, and one point Ricky was winning, and one point three of them were tied, one point two of them were tied. We saw so much change in going on, and then we get to hole 14, Kyle gets the birdie, Ricky gets the par, Isaac gets the birdie, although coming after a bogey or a double bogey, so that was a little bit of a challenge. Then on hole 15, we saw Ricky get the par, Kyle get the par, Isaac get the birdie, moving everyone closer and tighter together, and then on hole 16, Ricky gets the birdie, Isaac gets the birdie, Kyle gets the par, on the following hole, Ricky steps up on 17, first to throw, and throws an absolute dart inside the circle, closer to the bull's eye than the circle, securing himself a birdie, Kyle unfortunately kicks OB off of the left side, and gets himself a bogey, and Isaac gets himself a par. Going into the final hole, we knew Isaac needed to get an eagle, and Ricky would have to par for there to be a playoff, long story short, Ricky, again wins the Preserve Championship, congratulations to him, Kyle Klein gets the eagle on the final hole to secure solo second, Matt Orem grabs himself a tie for third with Isaac Robinson, Ganon Burr takes fifth with an eagle on the 18th hole, Luke Taylor again, third top 10 in a row for the young man out of Michigan, gets himself a birdie to tie for fifth as well. Anthony Borrello, who many pundits said, is going through a tough time, if you will, reminds everyone that he's still got it this year, maybe the most improved player on the MPO side, and also a player of the year candidate, he finishes in the seventh, Adam Hammes, Garrett Gerithy, round out your top eight there, so congrats to all those players. Of course, with the yang, we have the yang, Paul McBeth, Corey Ellis, Andrew Marweed, were some of the highest-rated players to miss cash. Elijah Bickel, congratulations to him, who took 19th this weekend. He's got a PDGA rating of 997, and shot 32 points over his rating to cash. That's pretty great. Luke Taylor, who again took fifth in Kyle Klein, who took second, still shot more than 25 points over their rating each to continue scoring well. Looking across the board, we saw that Luke Taylor and Kyle Klein on the MPO side, Maria, Liba, and Rebecca Cox on the MPO side, who all took top five finishes, still shot well, well over your rating. Sort of win on the Pro Tour, takes a lot of effort, and that's crazy. Congrats to all the players that shot well out there in Minnesota this weekend. Now, if you were one of those people viewing, maybe you have the DGN Pro, and you got to see a couple of live holes consistently, I was watching 18 and 11 a lot this weekend, I thought it was great to see that shot in 11, all the players teeing off and landing on that elevated green, the castle hole, I believe they call it. That was really cool. As far as going through the course, minus hole 12, which had a lot of boring, for most part, a lot of pars, we saw a large variety across the holes. The bore score looked wonderful. In fact, we got big thumbs up for five holes on the MPO side and four holes on the FPO side, which I believe brings that to the highest rated bore score of the year if you were paying attention. Congrats to the course designers, Calaviska and all the new property owners, the friends from Gotta Go, Gotta Throw. So, that looked great. We saw the adjustments on DGN as far as the newer holes. I thought they did a great job of explaining those newer holes specifically to the viewer, to the average person like myself, and like you, that's listening. We really did see the best of the event, minus one thing. And I'm gonna say it, you know, other people can say it. I thought the coverage did a great job of maybe not specifically targeting the manufacturer of the targets and maybe using more friendly language, but we saw too many spin-ons. We saw too many dead center, hit the pole, come right back at us, especially in that 20, 25 foot range. We saw people hang their head on putts they should have made, or putts they would have made on other baskets. So, be aware, take note of that. Probably was the best event of the year, would have definitely been the best event of the year. Maybe if we didn't see those unfortunate splash outs, spit outs, whatever you wanna call 'em. Overall though, probably the best event of the year, from a viewing standpoint, from an excitement standpoint, we didn't see any overtime, we didn't see any playoff holes, but those final four or five holes in round three really did play like they were playoff holes. Congrats again to all the people that placed well at the event, and congrats to you who is listening this right now. Thanks for telling people about us.
