The Red Sox go into the All-Star Break a season-high 11 games over .500 with Sunday's 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.  Sox dropped the opener Friday night, won the next two and have won 4 straight series.

The Sox were down 1-0 just four pitches into the game with Brayan Bello giving up a home run to the Royals leadoff hitter, Adam Frazier.  Bello responded nicely but retiring the next 3 hitters.  Bello allowed a single to Hunter Renfroe in the 2nd inning, but he was thrown out at 2nd by left-fielder Tyler O'Neill trying to stretch a single into a double.

Rafael Devers gave the Red Sox their first lead of the afternoon with a 2-out, 2-run Home Run in the bottom of the 1st inning off of starting pitcher Brady Singer.  It was Dever's 2nd home run of the series and 23rd on the year.  Dominic Smith made it 4-1 with a 2-run Home Run in the 2nd inning. It was Smith's 5th Home Run of the season and 2nd of the homestand.

Royals made it a 1-run game with Salvador Perez hitting a solo Home Run off Bello in the 6th inning.  Sox had opportunities to add on, but left bases loaded in the 3rd, stranded two in scoring position in the 4th and 2 in the 6th.

Bello retired the leadoff hitter in the 7th, but was taken out after issuing his first walk of the game.  Brennan Bernardino entered and threw a wild pitch to allow the runner to move to 2nd base, but Bernardino left him stranded by getting a pop-up on the infield and a strike out.

Red Sox finally added on in the 7th inning.  Rafael Devers led off the inning with a walk and scored on a 2-out RBI single from Smith.  Smith with 5 RBIs in the final 2 games of the series.

Kenley Jansen entered in the 8th inning and struck out the side in impressive fashion.  Jansen allowed 3 straight hitters to reach with one out.  Freddy Fermin knocked in a run with a single and on the play Ceddanne Rafaela threw the runner out at 3rd for the 2nd out of the inning.

Jansen came back and got the next hitter on a ground out to end the game and notch the save.

It's his 19th save of the season and the 439th of his career.

Locked On Red Sox POSTCAST Notes-

Duran had 4 hits, including a double, and now has 47 extra-base hits thru the first 95 games of the season.  It's his 3rd 4-hit game of '24. Duran grounded out in the 8th.  David Hamilton had 3 hits in the #2 spot in the lineup.

Bello notched his 10th win of the season on Sunday.  He's the only pitcher with 10 or more wins and an ERA over 4.

Red Sox with 14 hits in the win and are now 33-3 this season when tallying 10 or more hits.

The Red Sox are 10-2 in the rubber game of a series this season and 7-0 at Fenway Park.

Red Sox will open up after the All-Star Break with a 6-game road trip against the Dodgers and Rockies.

Sox 11 games over 500 going into the All-Star break with Sunday's 5-4 victory against the Kansas City Royals. They held on late to pick up the win. Kenley Jansen asked to get the final six outs. He did it, but he made things interesting in the ninth inning. Red Sox take two out of three from the Royals going into the All-Star break. And if you're with us on this Sunday, give us your MVP pick of the first half for the Red Sox. I'm going to give you mine and guess what? It's not a surprise pick. On our latest edition of the Lockdown Red Sox Postcast, we are recapping the Red Sox win against the Royals in the series finale on Sunday, Brian Bayo gave up a home run to the first matter that he faced. Adam Frazier, four pitches in, boom, home run. You thought, oh no, but Bayo to his credit, quality outing settled in and after that picks up the win his 10th on the year. Our latest episode of the Lockdown Red Sox Postcast brought to you by booking.com, booking.com. The right stay can make you a fan of any city, even your rivals, check out booking.com for your stay today. So the Sox win it. And again, four pitches into the game, Adam Frazier, home run, up Ryan Bayo won nothing ball game. That lead for the Royals, Bayo responded nicely, retired the next three hitters. That lead was short-lived. The Red Sox led 4-1 on a couple of home runs early on. Then all of a sudden, you're thinking, it's going to be one of those games, 4-1 lead. Then it was 4-2. Then it was 4-3 on a home run by Salvador Perez. The Red Sox left the bases loaded in the third inning, but also in that third, chase starter Brady Singer from the game. And I said, leading into the fun finale, I was looking forward to this matchup, Singer and Bayo, but Singer didn't make it out of the third. The Red Sox attacked him at a good game plan, just like they did against Seth Lugo on Saturday. But the Sox left the bases loaded in the third, didn't add on. Left second and third and the third are in the left runners on base at second and third and the fourth inning, and then a 1-2-3 fifth inning and the sixth inning. Red Sox, Doran two-ounce single, you thought, okay, let's see what happens here. Doran fourth hit of the game at that point, Hamilton broke in bat single in the center field. Doran, great job running the bases with two-ounce, read it perfectly with the ball in front of them. Went to first to third, but Rob Refsnider, pinch hitter, retired, two runners left on base. Seventh inning, Dom Smith, Dom Smith, two run home run earlier in the game, Dom Smith came through. Dom Smith, a lead-off walk to devers, O'Neill struck out, O'Neill another tough day at the plate, although he did break an 0-4-9 with a single. Wong, pinch hit, retired, five-thrain, a nice play at third base by Mike Kell Garcia, and then Smith, a little two-ounce magic. RBI base hit, his second hit of the game, three RBIs, five runs batted in over the last two games and a little breathing room. And wouldn't you know it, the Red Sox needed it. Kenley Jansen, eighth inning, and Bernardino did a nice job coming in for Bayo. They left a runner in scoring position in the seventh inning. Bayo retired the first batter that he faced in the seventh inning, and then Bernardino came on after Bayo issued his first and only walk of the game, and then eighth inning. Kenley Jansen wasn't pitching a while, one, two, three, three strikeouts, inning over. Ninth inning, two run ball game. Jansen retired the lead-off hitter, and David Hamilton made a nice play going up the middle to retire the lead-off hitter. That home run by Frazier in the first inning, I believe, and Bayo did not allow another base runner. So, yeah, all the way through, the lead-off man reached for the home run in the first inning. The lead-off man did not reach Bay safely again during the game. And Jansen got the help from David Hamilton at second base in the ninth inning. Nice play again, going to his right up the middle, got the runner, got the hitter at first base for the first out. But then Jansen ran into some trouble, and Kenley Jansen doesn't run into trouble all that often, right? But with one out, two straight batters reached. Run scores on a base hit, then sat on Rafael, a moving from shortstop to centerfield, throws out the runner at third, bad base running play by the Royals. That was the second out. Jansen comes back, gets the third out ball game over, and the Red Sox pick up the 5-4 victory. Bayo, again, gave up the home run, four pitches in, down 1-0. Raffi Dever's home run in the bottom of the first, ending 2-1 ball game, Red Sox never trailed again. Dom Smith had the home run. Will your Abreya got things going with a double down the right field line ball, went over the wall and into the seats, then Dom Smith came through with a two-run home run as second of the home stand fifth on the season. And Dom Smith continues to, you know, they're talking about it, you know, in the sense of, you know, Tristan Casas, we're not there yet, but this is kind of looking like a lost season for Tristan Casas. Now come back August 1 or after August 1 at this point in time. Dom Smith, I'll say it again, just because, again, he was productive, five RBIs, last two games, and the Red Sox do pick up the victory. So the Red Sox go into the all-star break, feeling good, right? Feeling real good. Eleven games over for the first time this season. Pick up another game on the Royals for that third wild card spot. Yankees got a lead late against the Orioles, we'll touch on that one a little bit later on as the Royals were able to come, or the Orioles were able to come back. But, you know, eleven games over 500, one of the best records on the road in baseball this season, and now a game within 500 at Fenway this year. Longest home win streak of the first half of the Red Sox, four games, that was earlier in the year. So the Red Sox pick up the victory 31 series, 22 wins in the final game of a series with Sunday's win and a one-run victory against Kansas City. You'll tank that as well. Red Sox have won four straight series against Miami. The Yankees, the A's and the Royals. And you're saying, "Okay, well, they won a series against the A's and won a series against the Marlins." Well, they won the series on the road in New York last weekend, right? Took two out of three. And you play the team in front of you, and you win the series, and they've won now one four straight. So again, great thing for the Red Sox. They take care of business in that final game of a series. Win the finale, win the series. That's been the key of late. Ten and two in the rubber game of series this year, seven and O at Fenway Park. And now 42 and four, when scoring five or more runs in a game and 26 straight wins, scoring five or more. That's helping your pitching staff, and that's giving a shot in the arm to the offense as well. Bayo the victory. Brian Bayo his tenth win on the season. So Bayo joins a select company. So you've got guys like Chris Sal, Seth Lugo, Aaron Nola, Grace and Rodriguez, Luis Heel, Mitch Keller for the Pirates, Tarek Skubel for the Tigers, Ranger Suarez for the Phillies, Zach Wheeler for the Phillies, all with ten or more wins. Bayo, those names I just mentioned, all with ten or more wins, every one of them has an ERA below four. Bayo, ten wins and an ERA is still over five. So when you want to make the argument that wins and losses don't matter for a pitcher, well, they do to the pitcher. And he's got ten wins with an ERA at over five now, I think five, three, two. But the Red Sox pick up the win, one run victory. And it was a good series. You draft the opener, you win the next two against the Royals, who have a lot to play for. And if you think the Royals aren't thinking that, you know, we're going to go for this, we want to, you know, we want to, we want to post season spot, remember, horrible team last year, just absolutely dreadful, but putting things together this year. They're plus 25 plus 27, somewhere in there from this time last year to this time this year. I mean, just absolutely terrific turnaround, right? For the Royals. But they added last night, he wasn't available today, but Hunter Harvey coming from the nationals to the Royals. So they get a hard throwing right hander in their bullpen. They gave up one of their top position prospects, one of their top five guys. And I said it on my Linux on baseball live stream podcast earlier in the day on Sunday, you want to look at that trade acquiring Hunter Harvey for the Royals and giving up their number two prospect, according to MLB pipeline.com, you want to make a trade? Go right ahead. But be prepared to be prepared to give up from your farm system because it's just going to happen. Red Sox pull out the victory. I had a thought earlier in the day today prior to the game and I'll finish this question off in the next segment. But do you think, and again, I'll finish that off coming up next, Red Sox, one run victory, Bay of the wind, Devers Smith, home runs, Janssen picking up the save. Do you think that's next? So the Red Sox pick up the victory season. By 11 games, over 500 going to the All-Star Break, they'll open up after the All-Star Break next Friday, three in Los Angeles against the Dodgers and three more in Denver against the Rockies. And do you think that in just a moment? Let's tell you about booking.com. One of our sponsors on the Red Sox, locked on Red Sox post-cast, booking.com, booking.com. So if you're joining us on the lockdown sports Boston YouTube channel, who is your MVP of the first half for the Boston Red Sox? I'm going to give you mine in just a moment. I'm also going to get into one of those where I finish the question off, right? Do you think I'm going to finish that off in just a moment? Hey, a tip of the cap to our every dayers for making lockdown Red Sox their first list and Gabby Hurwitz interview with Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey right now up and available. Wherever you get podcasts also available on the lockdown sports Boston YouTube channel as well. And we acknowledge our every dayers for making lockdown Red Sox their first list every day. So who is your MVP of the first half of the season? And yes, I'm going to give you my answer. And yes, it's a Captain Obvious answer as well, right? But I love it on social media. Who's your top 10 pictures all time for the National League and the All-Star game? People pose that and they don't want to hear your answer. They just want to give their answer. We know that, right? My answer is simple. MVP of the first half of the season for the Red Sox, third baseman Raphael Deverse, number 11. Yes, you can make an argument absolutely 100% for Jaren Durant. You can make an argument 100% for Tanner Howe, but Raffi Deverse, another home run in the victory for the Red Sox last 17 games for Deverse, nine home runs, 22 RBI's last 25 games, 29 runs batted in total leads the team in those two categories and deserving. What does he get? He gets a medal every time he hits a home run. And he got one on Saturday, got one on Sunday as well as they put it around his neck. So Deverse is that guy for me. You want to join me on the conversation, listening live on our lockdown sports Boston YouTube channel, throw it out there. You can also throw it out there and you can go back and forth with me as well. Hit me up on the X, formerly known as Twitter @lenixonbaseball. Again, we're continuing to build this with the lockdown Red Sox postcast. In our record, since starting this, the home stand against the Phillies and Yankees in June, where they went four and two took two of three from the Phillies, took two of three from the Yankees. Hey, we've got a winning record right now. I'm not going to replace Alex Corn in the dugout, but we've got a winning record here. My first NASA reference because Craig Breslow, Chief Baseball Officer for the Red Sox joined Dave O'Brien, Kevin Eucles in the second inning, and talk about this is funny because Obi and Euc didn't get that many questions to fire away at Craig Breslow because it was a quick one, two, three inning and he wasn't sticking around for the bottom of the second. That question was not even posed. But I posed this, the Red Sox have a lot of former players involved in their radio and TV broadcast. Kevin Eucles, Lou Merloney, Will Middlebrook, Jonathan Pappelbaum, Kevin Malar, Jim Rice, The Hall of Famer, Lenny Danardo, Jim Rice, and Lenny Danardo, John Pappelbaum. I might be the first person that's ever referred to him as John Pappelbaum, so I'll throw a path out there. Those guys usually in studio, pre and post came with Tom Karen, right? But all those guys, I had this thought today, do you think, do you think any of these former players has the ear of Craig Breslow? Do you think any of them are saying, come on, man, you've got to, you've got to do something. You've got to do something here in the next couple of weeks before the trade deadline. You know what it's like. This isn't Dave Dombrowski. This isn't Hine Bloom. This is Craig Breslow, a former big league pitcher. To any of those guys that I mentioned that are part of either the Neston TV broadcast or the Red Sox WEEI radio network, do any of those guys have that street cred with Craig Breslow where they just can say, hey, you've got to do something for this group. You've got to, you've got to do it for Alex Corne, the coaching staff, you've got to do it for the players. You know, if you add something here, what that's going to mean. Yes, for the fan base, but more, obviously, more importantly, to the guys in that clubhouse, Alex Corne and his staff, add something. And right now, we know a starting pitcher and a right-handed bat. And you keep bringing up, you know, I say, Tom Smith, Tom Smith, Tom Smith doesn't go anywhere anywhere when Tristan Costas comes back. Von Grissom, I don't think you can count on him right now. And he had some interesting comments this week, but when is he going to play? He's a right-handed bat. He's supposed to be the everyday second baseman, hasn't happened, right? Can't rely on him right now that he's going to be that guy and that addition of a right-handed bat. Tristan Costas, you get back him in the lineup and Jonathan Papalmann, I think, even said it on the pregame show. Hey, he's going to come back, but he's missed an awful lot of time. You just can't expect him to go out there and get two or three knocks every single game early on. He's got to go out on a rehab assignment. So Tom Smith sticks around, but the need for a right-handed bat, right now, big part of that is the fact that Tyler O'Neill, 16 home runs, he's been stuck on that number for a while. O'Neill did have a single in the game in his second at bat, but one for four and three strikeouts, the last three games, one for 12 and nine strikeouts. O'Neill should be that right-handed bat. He sort of set the expectations a lot higher with the home runs that he hit, got off to a good start, missed some time, and maybe he's dealing with something with a lower, you know, I think it was a right leg injury maybe, it was just something sore in the knee, going too far out on the limb right there. I don't know exactly what it was, but maybe that's still bothering him, but he's just not even putting the ball in place. So a right-handed bat is desperately needed. And I said it the other day on an addition of the lockdown Red Sox postcast, Bayo got pushed back. And I thought maybe Bayo gets pushed to the bullpen or triple A for a couple of starts. Now, 10th win on the season on Sunday and a one-run victory. First winner, first 10-game winner for the Red Sox this season, right? But Tyler O'Neill, you add another bat to this lineup, even if you add Tristan Costas back to the lineup, you probably try to break up Devers and Costas, right? But O'Neill's got to go down in the lineup even further if he's going to be in there. We've touched on this a couple of times, but again, one more reminder, the draft. Comes up at 7 p.m. Eastern. Red Sox have the number 12 overall pick, and their second pick in the second round comes at pick number 50. So number 12 overall, remember last year, Kyle Teal fell to the Red Sox as he dropped out of the top 10. They were ready, willing to enable. I do think somebody right now, the Red Sox have their eye on dropping in the top 10. And I think they're going to pick somebody else. Again, they've been tied to Tennessee second baseman Christian Moore over the last couple of weeks. Baseball America, MLB pipeline. I did read earlier. I didn't go into it, but now tied to an infielder, a middle, a high school shortstop. That's sort of been their MO in the last couple of years, athletic, middle of the field type guys. There's not a lot of pitching in this draft, there's just not. If guys are going to fall and you want a pitcher to fall out of the top 10, there's only a couple of pitchers. The rest are college bats and a couple of high school bats sprinkled in there. But a couple of names to think about, just in case they drop. Chase Burns, pitcher for Wake Forest, Hagan Smith, left handed pitcher out of Arkansas. Again, the draft at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday night as the All-Star break is here. And it'll be the second draft in a row for Red Sox director of amateur scouting, Devin Pearson. And this is one of those in case you missed it. But an interesting finish for the Yankees and the Orioles. Talk about a must-need win. The Orioles did pick it up. But Craig Kimbrell gave it up in the ninth inning. Case you missed it. Yankees Orioles finale, Yankees taking the first two game series, first two games of the series of Camden Yards. Ben Rice, three run home run in the ninth inning of Closer, Craig Kimbrell. Cedric Mullins in the bottom half of the ninth inning played the role of hero for the Orioles. Mullins delivered with a two run double to left field. Yankees left field, their former Red Sox outfielder, Alex Verdugo came in on the ball, went back on the ball, misread it, stumbled, fell down, ball over his head, two run score, Orioles pick up the win and go into the all-star break feeling good about themselves, right? As they will go in as the leaders atop the AL Eastern Division. Yankees behind them, the Red Sox trying to close hard, right? Alex Cora said it recently. Let's be greedy. Let's go after the division title. But I'm sure there are Red Sox fans out there, especially with the way Verdugo's been over the first two series of the season, taking his time, snarling around the bases on home runs and the like. I'm sure there are some Red Sox fans who, if you haven't seen it already, you'll see it and say, "Oh, you know, that's Alex Verdugo. These things happen. That's too bad. He doesn't play for us anymore." Players of the day, as Brian Baio picks up his tenth win on the season, ten game winner with an ERA over five, take it, run with it, love it. So, Red Sox, 11 games over 500, 67 games left, all right? Broke out the calculator, did the math. You play seven games over 500 over your final 67 games of the season and after the all-star break at six in a row on the road, three in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, three more in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. But you go 37 and 30, and I don't think this team goes into a tailspin. They might drop three in a row, five of six at some point, but they're not going to go into a huge tailspin. Now 11 games over 500 for the first time this season, they've got a little cushion. They've got a little cushion now on the Royals for that third wild card spot. You're looking at the Yankees. You're looking at possibly the Orioles. You're looking at the Twins. You're looking at the Kansas City Royals. I don't know that it comes necessarily from the AL West, but you can also throw in the Mariners and the Astros in there as well. You go 37, 30 the rest of the way over the final 67 games of the season. That puts you at 18 games over 500 and 90 and 72. How many of you, and I'll raise my hand, I thought 85, 87. This is a team that can flirt and get to 90 wins. Play seven over the rest of the way, that puts you at 18 over for the season and 90 victories. Does that win the AL East? Not likely. Not likely. You're probably going to have to play anywhere from 12 to 15 over in the second half. Maybe you add something at the trade deadline where all of a sudden they do go on another terrific run, July, August, August into September. So 67 left, play seven over, and you finish with 90 victories. Four, Jaren Duran, capped the first half off with a four-hit game Sunday, his third four-hit game of the season average from 2.77 at the start of the day to 2.84 going into the all-star break. And the Red Sox are now, this is an impressive number. I'm not sure who's better. I know the Mariners, I think, are in there, but no, that's what the five runs are more. Gave you that number earlier. The Red Sox now, 14 base hits total in the victory against the Royals on Sunday, 33 and 3, 33 and 3 when collecting 10 hits or more in the game. There's one more number I wanted to look at and only eight strikeouts. Sox putting the ball in play. That ends a streak of 10 or 11 straight games with strikeouts. Don't want to end on a sour note right there. We'll end on the fact that Ryan Bail is a 10-game winner. Red Sox are a season I, 11 games over 500 and don't think for a second as we wrap up here. Don't even put this thought into your head of, "Oh, wow, the all-star game's coming at, you know, the break's coming at the worst time. They're playing great baseball." No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Dismiss that. This break's coming at a very good time right now for this team. And it's off to Arlington for Tanner Haupt and Jarrin Duran. Bruce Boce still is not named as starter. Certainly the starters are announced on Monday. Tori Lavello, manager of the Diamondbacks, one on Dan Patrick on Friday. Hey, Paul Scienz, you're the guest with the Dan Patrick Show. You're our starting pitcher for the National League on Tuesday. I'm still holding out hope that it's Tanner Haupt. We're arguing over one inning. So whoever starts it, maybe Haupt is pushed to the middle innings, maybe Haupt goes out there and just deals. Jarrin Duran maybe has a positive impact on the game as he comes off the bench as a reserve in his first all-star game. No matter what, Tanner Haupt, Jarrin Duran, both deserving. Both off to Arlington, looking forward to how that is chronicled over the coming days. Interesting. Kosses is going to be in Arlington as a member of the media already working on that second career. Not sure if he's going to bump pap. Bloody de Nardo, Loomer, Loney, Kevin Euchelis, Will Middlebrooks in the future, but Tristan Kosses is going to be in Arlington and he's going to have a microphone as well doing interviews and doing what Tristan Kosses does well, but not as well as being the first baseman for the Boston Red Sox.
