Happy Monday, welcome to the show, and luckily, it could be a happy Monday for a lot of you here who are tuning in because of the fact that the Red Sox had a great week last week. It started when they swept the Miami Marlins in Miami, including a game on the 4th of July, in which Nick Pavetta, almost through a no-hitter, he gave up one hit, a triple in the 7th inning, but the Red Sox were able to pull off the sweep in that series as they won in 12 innings on the 4th of July, and that was just an absolute roller coaster of a game. So, good three-game series in Miami, and then they go into Yankee Stadium and take two of three from New York. They won in 10 innings on a Friday night by a score of five to three. Then Saturday's game, which we don't really want to think about anymore, let's just forget about it. I mean, you could lose by one run or lose by ten, and either way, it's just one loss. So, we try to brush that one aside, but then the Red Sox ended the series with a three-nothing shutout win on Sunday. So for the second series in a row this year, the Red Sox did beat the Yankees and now have a four-and-two record against them, and the Red Sox now currently stand at 49 and 40. They're nine games over 500, and they are ready and amped up. They want to go to the playoffs, and they are playing like a team that definitely could. And one of the biggest factors is just the amount of grit and resilience this team has. I mean, for Masataka Yoshida to step up to the plate in the ninth inning with two outs, and there are two strikes on the count against him, and for him to just rip a game-tying home run to make the score 3-3, I mean, that was insane. I was literally screaming at my TV at the time because that game appeared to be one that was over. I mean, Clay Holmes looked like he was in control about the first couple outs very quickly. So it was seeming like it was just going to be one of those games I was going to wrap up quickly, and then Yoshida, who, by the way, has been hitting very well lately, comes up huge in a massive situation, and that was so much fun. And then in extra innings, St. Anne Raphael, who also has been really starting to figure things out offensively this year, came up and did his thing and crushed a two-run homer to give the Red Sox a lead they would not relinquish on Friday night. So that was exciting for sure, just an absolutely thrilling win, and one thing about this whole series in general that I've noticed, Raphael Devers, still exists, and he still owns the New York Yankees in Saturday's game, which was a blowout loss, unfortunately, for the Red Sox. He went yard, he hit a homerun, and went two for four on the day. Garrett Cole was pitching that game, and we all know that Devers owns Garrett Cole. This is nothing new here, but he did smoke a homerun in Saturday's loss, but then on Sunday, he hit two homeruns, and it was a very low scoring game. I mean, the Yankees had Louis Heale pitching, who likely could end up being Rookie of the Year. So I didn't expect it to be a very high scoring affair, but basically, Devers just put the entire team on his back, two homeruns on the night, the first one to give the Red Sox a one-nothing lead. And then when the Red Sox were up to nothing, thanks to another state on Rafaela homerun, he just smoked a ball that wasn't even in the strike zone. It was outside off the plate to get it over the fence and make it a three-nothing ball game. I mean, this guy just has a way of hitting at Yankee Stadium. He has the most go-ahead homeruns against the Yankees on the road in Red Sox history with 11. Jim Rice is right behind him with 10, then David Ortiz with nine, Ted Williams with eight, Carl Jostremsky with seven, Manny Ramirez with seven, and Babe Ruth with six. I mean, talk about some company for Devers to be in, but nobody has more go-ahead homeruns against the Yankees on the road than he does. So clearly, he likes playing at Yankee Stadium, he is very comfortable with it. It's fantastic to see him in a Red Sox uniform and go out there and just crush the Yankees because a lot of the game early on was looking like it was just going to be a, you know, maybe one-nothing final because nobody was scoring both pitchers were pitching very well and it wasn't looking like there was going to be a lot of scoring. But then in the last few innings, things got very exciting to the dismay of Louis Heale and the Yankees, Devers ripped that solo homer to the opposite field on a 98.8 mile per hour heater. It was unbelievable and you could just feel the tension even watching it on TV just how badly both of these teams wanted to win this series and grab that game, but he just made himself and his presence known and got the job done and carried the Red Sox to the win. He has 16 homers and 57 career games in the Bronx, which is the most of any visitor in MLB since the start of the 2017 season. He just is so comfortable there and it was fun to watch him just do his thing there because Devers obviously is an all-star and we've seen him have some great seasons and put up great numbers for the Red Sox, but he truly puts up his best numbers at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx and it's truly funny to see that as a Red Sox fan and to just see him truly crush the hearts and souls of Yankees Nation. I mean, I can't find anything more satisfying and entertaining than that. So Devers is certainly somebody who just continues to absolutely mash when he plays the Yankees especially on the road and hopefully he can just continue to hit that well outside of Yankee Stadium and go and hit that way against other teams too because if he could hit more consistently against other teams, the way that he just did over the weekend, he'd be having an MVP caliber season to the point where he could seriously be in the MVP conversation because what a performance by him at the plate and another fun fact that was taken from this series is St. out Rafaela is now the first Red Sox rookie ever with at least 50 RBIs and 10 stolen bases before the all-star break. So he has really been showing his athleticism in a variety of different ways, showing his ability to improve and grow offensively, also being able to showcase his speed and steal the bases and obviously making highlight real catches in the outfield. So lots of good things from the Red Sox in this series and I just really like the fact that this team never gives up. If we can take a big lesson from this series from the Red Sox, it's that you could never count this team out because they want to win and a lot of times they will find a way to win these games, especially neck and neck ones like that. And I mean, that when on Friday night has to be the best win of the year for the Red Sox to date because I thought that game had no chance of continuing. I thought it was over and when Yoshida came up to the plate, I thought that was going to be an automatic out. So there seems to be new heroes that emerge each time when the Red Sox win games and that's what makes it so much fun and Devers is usually the hero and at least one of the games that takes place in the Bronx. So I'm sure, I'm actually surprised they haven't done it already, but I'm sure that the Yankees will start to intentionally walk Devers when their opposing pitchers are going up against him because, I mean, he just knows the Yankees in and out and has figured out a way to excel against them. So it would be in their best interest to just put him on base every time they see him. I don't know if they will do that. I'm certainly happy with him allowing to continue to absolutely mash because that's super fun to watch, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees decide they want to contain it and that means just intentionally walking him every time so he doesn't get the app out. So we'll see how they handle that moving forward. But coming up, I'm going to be talking about a guy who absolutely dominated in the Red Sox rubber match win on Sunday against the Yankees. After a really rough loss on Saturday in which the Red Sox lost 14-4 and just kept unraveling, they were determined to bounce back on Sunday night prime time and the Sunday Red Sox have been fantastic this year and they usually do win. So they were ready coming into this game and you know who else was ready is Cutter Crawford. I mean, he absolutely crushed it, seven innings pitched, four hits, zero earned runs with four strikeouts and no walks. This was the longest scoreless streak that he's pitched in his career with seven straight innings and he just looked absolutely phenomenal the entire time he was out there. Then Justin Slaton came in, pitched one inning, gave up a walk and a strikeout, but managed to escape without giving up any runs. He did not look his best in that game but there was some base traffic for him that he was able to clean up and not allow the Yankees to score, which was huge. Then Kenley Janssen came in to shut it down in the ninth, one inning, pissed with one strikeout and just got the job done per usual, Kenley's 18th save of the season and he has just been nails for this Red Sox team also and yes, Kenley Janssen is on the older side and yes, we don't really know what the rest of his career is going to look like if he's going to start to think about hanging it up after this year or what the plan is for him. But either way, I don't think there's a Red Sox fan out there who can argue that the Red Sox don't need Kenley Janssen as a closer because who else would close games if we don't have him? We need somebody out there to close games who isn't expert at pitching in those high-level bird situations and that to me is Kenley Janssen right now, so we have definitely been spoiled by the fact that he's been pitching a lot better than people thought he would over the last couple of years, but he definitely is somebody who helps lock it down when he needs to and Carter Crawford, you can say the same thing about, he's had a good season overall this year. He was coming off a really good start against the Marlins on July 2nd in which he went six innings, giving up three hits and one earned run. He did give up a home run in that game, but struck out seven, so he definitely was locked in and in the zone. In the game against the Marlins, he was pulled from the game a little prematurely, he still had a lot left in the tank, I think he could have gone in for another inning for a seventh, but that didn't happen and then he totally avenged everything in the win against the Yankees. He just was cruising and looked very good. One thing I've always said about Carter Crawford is he certainly has the means to do it and the pitch arsenal to do it, it's just staying consistent with it and if we can get him to continue to pitch the way that he did in New York, I mean that's a really special guy that we're getting here and I was just so impressed by Crawford because of the fact that he was going up against a very good Yankees pitcher who we knew was likely going to have a good outing that day. And that's a lot of pressure to put on a pitcher is to out pitch the other and obviously every baseball game you play, you want to have a better pitching performance than the starter on the other team, that makes sense, but just the fact that it was so spotlighted as likely going to be a pitcher's duel, it would have been a tough look for him if he was allowing the Yankees offense to score a lot of runs on him. So he looked very good and was competing neck and neck with Louis Heel until Heel did give up that home run to Devers, but I really like Crawford, you know I think for the most part this year we've been able to know what we're getting from him because he's shown an ability to just dominate and lock in when he needs to. The other thing too that was interesting about Carter Crawford in his start on Sunday was how few pitches that he was doing it in his 40 pitches were the fewest by a pitcher through the first five innings pitch of a game since May 30th 2017, which was Ivan Novo with 38 pitches. So he was really managing it and that's why he was able to go as deep into the game as he was and it's really honestly great to see cutter being able to go deeper into games this year and being able to see him have things go his way and he really has developed into a really solid pitcher for this Red Sox team and you know going into this game on Sunday the Red Sox had a big opportunity to beat a team that really hasn't been playing well as of late and having cutter on the mound who was coming off the good start his last time out had a good shot to be able to do that again but to do what he did and not allow a run through seven innings now that's certainly something that's going to absolutely boost his confidence and I'm really excited to see what he does with that moving forward because this is definitely a really good pitcher that we have here and there are just been so many situations this year in which he could have crashed and burned and he didn't and yes he's had some struggles every pitcher besides really Tanner how has had some struggles this year but Crawford to me it has still emerged as a top three starter in this Red Sox rotation right now and it's cool to see because I had my reservations about him going into this year and I said you know we just need to see more from him and now we are seeing more from him and if he can continue to pitch like this it puts the Red Sox in a really good position to be able to contend and be in a playoff spot which they are right now so it was a really good outing by him and not to mention that the rest of the pitching staff did their job too and even looking back to Friday nights five to three when Tanner how only lasted 3.1 innings he gave up two hits and three runs but only one of them was earned he walked four and gave up one strikeout so his problem was just that he couldn't really find the strike zone that day but then Bailey Horn came in and pitched 2.2 innings gave up two hits and zero earned runs he struck out three then Cam Boozer came in two innings pitched one hit zero earned runs Justin Slaton who got the win one inning zero earned runs with one strikeout and then Kenley walked it down one inning one hits zero earned runs so the pitching really did its job overall in those two games obviously Saturday was an exception that was just a weird fluke game happened to everybody but if you're looking at the two games at the Red Sox one in this series the pitching was a big reason for all of that so it's really fantastic to have seen somebody like Carter Crawford continue to develop and emerge into a very confident and talented pitcher for this Red Sox team because that's definitely something that is going to pay off and pay dividends for us in the long run he's just mixing a lot of good pitches in there with that sweeper the slider the fastball the cutter utilizing different pitches that he has been able to develop more of and use those to his advantage when he's going against opposing hitters and the Yankees just had no answers for him and big props to him for having the game that he had so great performance by cutter Crawford and I'm looking forward to seeing his next start because he definitely has emerged as a very talented young pitcher for this Red Sox team coming up I'm going to be talking about a roster move that the Red Sox made recently and it is a pretty significant one so be sure to tune in for that I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but as the playoffs wind down we get fewer games and the sports aren't sports thing like I that's super simple to remember discover automatically doubles the cash back you've earned on your credit card at the end of your first year with cash back match that means with discover you could turn $150 cash back to $300 that's right you could put it towards some memorabilia you've had your eye on or treat yourself to a premium sports network you earn and discover doubles see terms at discover dot com slash credit card the Boston Red Sox made a recent roster move they did have to place Chris Martin on the injured list which was retroactive to July 4th and it's definitely a bummer because he has been solid since coming back from his last stint on the injured list due to anxiety he just needed to take a break from pitching and he did stepped away for a bit and then came back and was really looking like a new and improved version of Chris Martin more along the lines of who we saw last season but now he was placed on the IL with elbow inflammation so right now it's 15 day injured list and basically Alex Cora said we'll know more over the next few days and how he hadn't felt great so they are feeling like it's something minor but have to wait and see what happens because obviously with where they're at in the season right now with there being a day off on Monday and then the all-star break coming up it doesn't really make sense to push him and then he might end up being lost for a longer period of time so the Red Sox would rather keep him resting for now and then when they have the break let him recover then so then they could bring him back after the all-star break for the remainder of the games because he truly has been the great setup man that he was last year for this Boston Red Sox team and it's definitely tough because he spent some time already away from the game so when he came back from the IL before he was probably eager to get back out there on the field and pitch and so for him to now be on the injured list again because of the fact that he was experiencing some pain he is definitely unfortunate for him but I do agree with the mentality of let's make sure that he's healthy and is feeling good when we bring him back because we don't want to rush him back and then risk us not being able to use him for the rest of the season so his season stats so far two in one record 342 ERA over 26 games pitched which was 26.1 innings he also has reported 29 strikeouts in the mix and he has been able to get his numbers down from what they were earlier on in the season so that definitely has been helpful last seven games 386 ERA but last 15 games is a 180 ERA so he certainly has over the last couple weeks been pitching really well so hopefully he can come back sooner rather than later because he definitely is a key piece of this Red Sox bullpen that we need in order to win some of these games down the stretch in a corresponding roster move the Red Sox called Cam boozer back up who had been sent down to AAA on the season this year he's one and two with a 3.0 ERA over 27 games pitched he has recorded one save two in his last 15 games he has a 240 ERA and last 30 is 3.0 so he's definitely trying to work his way back into being a very consistent good pitcher for this Red Sox team and he did make an appearance in the Red Sox Friday night five to three win he went two innings in that game and just gave up one hits and no earned runs he did walk one but he also struck out one too so it was nice to see him locked in and in the zone and really be fresh out there because he is somebody who needs to develop the confidence and the confidence is going to come with playing time and if he gets into more games that will only help him to generate more of that confidence that he needs moving forward to be able to pitch and I do have to say you know Alex Quora deserves a lot of credit for the way he's been managing the pitchers on this team I mean even in the blowout on Saturday he brought chase Anderson into the game late and he is always the guy who comes in when the Red Sox are in a game that's pretty much a wash at that point he pitched 3.1 innings that day giving up five hits and five earned runs so it was not a pretty outing for Anderson but Alex Quora knows like okay we're clearly not going to win this game so let's focus on taking the series tomorrow and then they brought in chase Anderson to finish it but it didn't matter because the Red Sox were down by a lot so Alex Quora definitely deserves some props for the way he's been managing these guys this year and I feel like he's somebody who would know how to handle Cam Boozer throwing him into lower leverage situations to start so that he's not feeling all of this pressure because you do need to ease into it if you are newer to the atmosphere or newer to that team and so I like that Alex Quora has been like yeah let's not bring him in in this really intense situation where the bases are loaded and they have nobody out and we need somebody to come in and get out of it that's Fred and Bernardino's job right now so Cam Boozer is somebody who you know I'm definitely open to being back up at the major league level I want to see more of his stuff and more of what he can do but the Red Sox obviously have seen some improvement in him since he went back down to AAA so it'd be interesting to see what he does in the interim but the Red Sox definitely do need Chris Martin and having a setup man is so huge to pitch the eighth inning when your closer is then pitching the ninth so having Martin here feels super crucial for this Red Sox team in terms of their ability to have those lockdown guys coming in to pitch late in games when they are trying so hard to get some other runs on the board and they just can't do it so you definitely need your lockdown guys and Chris Martin certainly is one of those lockdown guys but the Red Sox have a lot of good things going for them right now you know saw some great things in this series against the Yankees overall with this win and it was very cool to be able to see guys like Yoshida have a breakthrough moment because it's been a while for him since he's had a moment like that and I'm hoping he can continue to hit the way that he is because he's been great lately and it's been a huge for a Red Sox team that needs somebody consistent to play DH so that's been awesome to watch Rafaela Hamilton Durant are still awesome to watch Devers obviously is Devers and it's just a fun team right now and I think the Bives are so high these guys want to win and they are hungry to win and they just do not give up as seen in the first game of this series so lots of good things to take away from this series against the Yankees and now I'm just hoping that the momentum continues and they just continue to pick it up and just win more games moving forward because this team would be so much fun for anybody to watch in the playoffs with all the young talent that is right now so hopefully they land in that playoff spot hopefully they buy at the trade deadline there's no reason why they should be on the fence about that they are such a you know money grabbing retro organization honestly that they should not be afraid to go and get guys that may be expensive if you have to take on some of the contract but can help your team win now show these young guys that you care about wanting to see them win and then things will be very good in terms of the clubhouse vibe as opposed to saying you know we don't believe in this team so we're going to sell off pieces up the deadline that can be very discouraging for the guys so hopefully the Red Sox make the right decision and decide that they are going to be buyers at the trade deadline because this Red Sox team in the way they've been playing certainly deserve that but you can do your part to help make sure that happens by keeping the faith as always go Red Sox and have a catch on the flip side a prime member you can listen to this locked on podcast
