The Red Sox celebrated our Nation's Birthday on Thursday afternoon by completing a series sweep over the Marlins in Miami.  Sox improved to 8 games over .500 for the first time this season with a 6-5, 12-inning victory in the finale.

Neither team scored in the 10th. Sox got two in the top of the 11th and the Marlins did the same in the bottom of the 11th. Sox got 2 in the top of the 12th.  Marlins got just 1 in the home 11th.  David Hamilton scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th on a ground out and Tyler O'Neil got a much-needed insurance run with an RBI Double.  O'Neil had 3 hits in the Sox victory.

Marlins Jesus Sanchez broke up Nick Pivetta's no-hit bid with a 2-out triple in the 7th.  He had a lead-off double against Kenley Jansen in the 9th inning, but he was cut down at the plate by Jarren Duran on a single to centerfield.  Sanchez then tied the game at 4-4 with a 2-Run Home Run off Zack Kelly in the 11th.  The Marlins entered the series with 16 home wins, and they had walked off in 8 of those wins.  Did not happen in the finale.  Greg Weissert gave up a run in the bottom of the 12th but managed to get the last out, stranding 2 runners on base.

Nick Pivetta rebounded from a rough outing last time out at Fenway against the Padres where he did not record an out in the 5th inning. Pivetta went 7 scoreless innings on Thursday afternoon, and exited with a 2-0 lead. He did end up with a no-decision.   Pivetta gave up only 1 hit, walked 2, struck out 10 and he had 5 1-2-3 innings.  He worked around a leadoff walk and a 2-out walk in the 4th and had a no-hit bid through the first 6.2 innings.  The only hit he allowed was a 2-out triple to Jesus Sanchez in the 6th and after the triple, he was then able to get the final out of the inning with a strikeout against Jake Burger.

The Marlins nearly walked it off in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Sanchez doubled to start the bottom of the 9th against Kenley Jansen, and he was then cut down at the plate by Jarren Duran on a single to centerfield.  Zack Kelly struck out 2 in the 10th and left runners at 2nd and 3rd.

The Red Sox got on the board in the 1st inning with Rafael Devers picking up an RBI with a ground out.  Devers up in a similar situation in the 6th with Tyle O'Neil at 2nd and David Hamilton at 3rd and he brought in Hamilton with another ground out to first base.  Devers now has 51 RBIs on the season and 13 RBIs over his last 10 games.  Devers is sitting on 999 career hits.

Marlins tied the game with 2 runs in the 8th inning.  Justin Slaten walked two batters and left with runners at 1st and 3rd and 2 outs.  Brennan Bernardino came in and gave up 2 straight singles that plated Miami's first 2 runs of the day.

[MUSIC PLAYING] It's the Lock-Dawn Podcast Network, your team every day. [MUSIC PLAYING] You are a Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast, part of Lock-Dawn Sports Boston. On the Lock-Dawn Podcast Network, your team every day. [MUSIC PLAYING] Well, the Red Sox and Marlins celebrate Independence Day by going 12 innings. In the end, the Red Sox able to pull off the series sweep. Lots to like, yes. But really, did the Sox need to go 12? We'll discuss. We welcome you into our latest edition of the Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast. I'm Steve Lennox. Long time baseball play-by-play announcer, show host, I've called games from Tokyo, Japan, and the Tokyo Dome, Dondra Stadium, Target Field, Minute Maid, Park, Kaufman Stadium, Jacobs Field, Globe Life, and Arlington, and the Loscher Park in Lowell, Massachusetts. Tip of the cap to the little spinners. We are providing reaction to every Red Sox game on the Lock-Dawn Sports Boston YouTube channel, as well as the Lock-Dawn Red Sox podcast feed, which is free and available wherever you get your podcast, and where Gabby Hurlbert produces in-depth Red Sox content Monday through Friday. Not only are we providing reaction to today's 12 inning victory in Miami for the Red Sox, we want your reaction, as well. To this game, you need to go 12 innings. You can comment-- the comment space is there on the YouTube channel. So join us, introduce yourself, get involved in the conversation. Hey, a sweep is a sweep. You might want to pull your hair out. You might want to scratch your head, but a sweep is a sweep. On this episode, we discussed Nick Pavetta. Guy flirted with a no-no. He had a no-hit bid. A win is a win. Pavetta deserved a win, plus a little chat on the Red Sox being one of the best road teams in baseball, and they're going to continue on the road. Let's see if they can keep up their winning rays away from Fenway. Off to the Bronx now, three game series with the Yankees. That starts on Friday. The Red Sox are trending up. The Yankees, on the other hand, are trending down in a big way, swept by the Cincinnati Reds. Reds finish off the sweep in the Bronx on July the 4th. Our latest episode of the lockdown Red Sox Postcast brought to you by booking.com, booking.yeah. The right stay can make a fan of any city. Absolutely. The right stay can make you a fan of any city. Even your rivals, check out booking.com for your stay today. Now, we should open with Nick Pavetta. We don't. We should, but we don't. Red Sox series finale, Kyle Taylor on the hill. A short time a few years ago, a member of the Red Sox organization, very brief, never pitched in the big leagues with the Red Sox. July 4th holiday. Sox on the road for Independence Day. For the first time since 2021, when they're on the road in Oakland against the Yays. Last year, Red Sox lost a Fenway to the Texas Rangers on the July 4th holiday. That lost to Texas snapping an A-game win streak for the Red Sox on our nation's birthday. So the Red Sox open up the game. Hamilton, O'walk, O'Neill a single, double-steal, Dever's RBI ground down. Yeah, everything was looking good. We'll get into Nick Pavetta. But we'll tell you that Nick Pavetta had a no-hit bid, spoiled with two outs in the seventh inning by Jesus Sanchez, who from the seventh inning on had himself a day at the plate. Red Sox don't score on the top of the 10th. Marlins don't score on the bottom of the 10th. Red Sox get two runs in the 11th inning. Duran the Ghost runner to third on a grand out. Tyler O'Neill, RBI base hit. Duran scores from third. Took second, O'Neill took second on the E6. Dever's O'walk, and Manuel Valdez, RBI base hit. For two ball game, Connor Wong struck out. His hit streak ending at 17, went 0 for two, came in as a pinch hitter, struck out in both of his at-bats. Jesus Sanchez, Jesus Sanchez, Jesus Sanchez. Broke up, Pavetta's potential no-hit bid in the seventh inning with a two-out triple. The Marlins sometimes celebrate like they're the best team in baseball. They're not, they're not even close. Sanchez celebrated there in the seventh inning, did not score. So Sanchez, bottom of the 11th inning. Two run home run, 4-4 ball game. Top of the 12th, David Hamilton. Little check swing, excuse me, check swing. Roller to third base, that brought in Roman Gonzalez. From third, Tyler O'Neill, third hit of the game. RBI double, that score state on Rafaela. Greg Weiser got the bottom half of the 12th inning. Weiser gave up a run, but nothing else. And the Red Sox do pick up the victory with the win. Eight games, over 500 for the first time this season. I want to push aside the fact that Nick Pavetta, again, deserving of a victory. But the Red Sox ultimately win the game. It took 12 innings. They had opportunities. Again, they had runners in scoring position. They had opportunities throughout. Unable to score and add on to what was a 1-0 lead, then a 2-0 lead, then they led 4-2. They ultimately hold on for the 6-5 victory. So the Red Sox, eight games, over 500 for the first time this season. Winners of 4 in a row, go to New York, feeling good. I'm sure there are guys in the clubhouse. I'm sure there guys are going to be on the charter plane tonight on the way to New York saying, hey, Nick, great job. Seven innings. Seven terrific innings. Again, talking and seeing the praises of Nick Pavetta, deservedly so, we get into him more and break down his outing over seven in our next segment. But the Red Sox do pick up the win. 11 games, over 500 on the road. Now, 27 and 16 on the road this season. They've won five in a row on the road, nine of 10. Raffi Devers, a couple of RBIs. Raffi Devers continues to be that RBI guy. Didn't have a hit walk three times. But a couple of RBI ground outs, sending a 999 career hits. Do I do it in this episode or do I do it when he gets his 1,000th career hit? I think I do it. Let's do it right here. Raffi Devers, yeah, did a little research during the game today. Dave O'Brien, Will Middlebrook's on Nelson. That's my reference. I watched the whole entire game. Raffi Devers, go back to his rookie season. Made his big league debut, July 25th, 2017. There's a point to this, I'll get to it quick. First Major League base hit his next game, July 26, a home run. Looked it up, kind of curious. We love our round numbers. Raffi Devers, his 500th career hit, a home run. That in Atlanta, in what, June? June of 2021. So Devers, first career, big league hit, a home run. His 500th career, big league hit, a home run. June 15, 2021, in Atlanta against the Braves. That was a three run shot in the first inning. He's sitting on 999. I thought maybe it was going to come. I thought a couple times they were going to walk him intentionally, but they had a left on left match up. But Devers is right there on an RBI streak right now. Two RBIs in each of the first two games of the series. And Devers, again, took the collar at the plate, going 0 for 3, but two productive outs with two ground ball outs and two RBIs and three walks in the game as well. Red Sox struck out 14 times. Marlon struck out 15 times against the Red Sox. Was the bullpen at its best? No. But here's the thing against about the Marlon's, all right? A win is a win. Marlon's swept at home by the Red Sox. But I've sort of been intimating it lately. Ken Lee Johnson, pardon me, has been outstanding. Went in and gave up two hits and ultimately didn't give up a run in his one inning. He pitched the bottom half of the ninth inning. Now, Jared Duran played a role in that bottom half of the ninth inning. Johnson gave up a base hit to who? Jesus sent you. It's got things going. But then in that bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied 2-2, just want to get to my notes here for just a moment. Bottom of the ninth inning. Jesus sent you as a lead off with a double, right? Sanchez double. Jake Berger struck out. Berger actually struck out five times in the game. Base hit to center field. Xavier Edwards. Look like it was going to be a game winning base hit, right? Look like it was going to be a game winning base hit for the Marlon's. Duran came up throwing. Duran got the throw to the plate. Reese McGuire applied the tag. Jesus Sanchez cut down at the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning against Kenley Janssen. Now, it was not a safe situation, but he gave up the lead off double. It was a ringing double by Sanchez. And then he had the two run home run against Zach Kelly that tied the game at four and four in the bottom of the 11th inning. But Kenley gave up a couple of hard hit balls. First appearance of the series hadn't worked since the weekend. Got a little rest in there. But Duran making an impact, can make an impact with the fat, can make an impact with his legs, made an impact in that ninth inning. And the reason I bring up that ninth inning is simply because of this reason. The Marlon's have 16 wins at home this season. 16, eight of them have come and walk off fashion. They had an opportunity in the ninth at three times in extra innings. The Red Sox bullpen may have bent. Zach Kelly gave up the two run home run. To Sanchez that tied the game up. The bullpen bent and bent and bent never broke at all against a team in the Marlon's. Like I said, they celebrate on occasion. Like they've got 55 wins. Like they're 25 games over 500. They're not, they're not even close. This is a wasted season. They've had injuries, you know, they might be 30 games under 500. They're gonna be a pain in the neck to play. And the Red Sox didn't necessarily get to the bullpen until next innings. But overall, hey, the Red Sox do pick up the victory. You've got to feel good about that. Again, eight over 500 for the first time this season. Wysert got the job done, gave up a run on that twelfth inning. Again, bullpen bent, did not break. Here is the true Nessin reference because this is a point to make. You've got Tanner Hauck going in the series opener on Friday against the Yankees. Again, the Yankees are scuffling. I'll say that all day long 'cause that's what they're doing right now. But you had Slaton, Bernardino, Janssen, Kelly, Wysert. Kenley Janssen through 10 pitches. Kelly probably not available in the series opener through 30 pitches. Slaton might be able to use him for a batter or two. But he gave up a couple of walks. They both scored Bernardino in that eighth inning. As the Marlins were able to tie it up. So the Marlins tied the game up at two and two and then four, four and then Red Sox hold on for the victory. Eight games above 500 and a series sweep as well for the Red Sox. We're gonna get more into Raffy Devers as we continue here on our lockdown Red Sox postcast. Again, if you're with us live on our YouTube channel, this will also be available on the podcast feed as well wherever you get your podcasts. But if you wanna join the conversation, there's a comment section on the YouTube channel. Introduce yourself, knock it out of the ballpark. Give us your thoughts on the Red Sox sweep in Miami against a Marlins team that, you know, 25, 26 games under 500. But they play with a cockiness that, you know, you would indicate that they're right now. Eight games over 500. So the Marlins were not able to do it again. Nick Pavetta, last timeout did not record and out in the fifth inning against the Padres. Pavetta was terrific. Deserve the win, didn't get it, but the Red Sox get the win. And Pavetta, an absolute shot in the arm. And all of a sudden, the Red Sox and the starting rotation, can it continue at Tanner Howtrade? We'll talk about Pavetta's outing when we continue. Red Sox have now won four in a row overall. Our latest edition of the lockdown Red Sox postcast is brought to you by I-Bada. I-Bada? It's summertime, which means it's barbecue season. Yes, it is. So, the Red Sox pick up the win. Nick Pavetta, no decision, but that's all right. Pavetta was on his game. Absolutely, took the mound again. Didn't make it out of the fifth inning. Didn't record it out in the fifth inning last time out against the Padres. Red Sox gave him an early 1-0 lead. Pavetta, and again, we've touched on it for three days, ad nauseam. The Marlins, a team, they go up their hacking. We know that. They go up their swinging, all right? So, Pavetta, 1-2-3 first. Two strikeouts through 11 total pitches. Pavetta, 1-2-3 second. Couple of strikeouts, nine pitches. The first hitter, and again, this team just is not disciplined. The first hitter in each of the first two innings out on the first out. That sets up the inning tremendously for a pitcher. And that's what Pavetta got over the first two innings. Pavetta, third inning, 1-2-3. Retired nine in a row to start. Picked up one strikeout, 12 pitches in the third. Fourth inning, here are the things that can kill you, right? Lead-off walks and two out walks. He gave up a lead-off walk, caught stealing Reese Maguire, cutting down the runner at second. Later gave up a two-out walk, nothing else going on. Nick Pavetta, 1-2-3 fifth. Nick Pavetta, 1-2-3 sixth inning. Nick Pavetta in the seventh. Retired the lead-off hitter on a fly ball to the outfield. Then got the next batter on a 3-1 ground-out. Dominic Smith made a nice play. He made a terrific play. And you knew Pavetta at that point in time, you knew he had a no-hit bid intact. Because he got over to the base, took the flip from Dominic Smith and raced right through the back. And in that moment, and there were a couple of times during the game where I was watching Pavetta, where I thought, you know, this guy's going to age well. I really think this guy, Chris Bassett better. Right now I'm enamored with Chris Bassett, the Blue Jays. I think he goes in the trade the next couple of weeks. I'd be shocked if he doesn't. But I just think Nick Pavetta is going to be one of those pitchers who age as well, who's going to be able to pitch effectively as a starter into his mid-30s and perhaps beyond. Had that thought today. Just a random thought, but Pavetta was just terrific. Seventh inning, the triple to Jesus Sanchez, the two-out triple, right? They went to the mound after that play, 3-1 on the put-out. Second out, no hitter in tack in the seventh inning with two down in the bases empty. They went to the mound. They had a little chat. Jesus Sanchez at the plate, triple. And at the time, you've got the Red Sox leading in the game. But at that time, now a little momentum. Red Sox are up to nothing. Jake Berger at the plate. Pavetta came right back, wasted no time. Berger struck out. Berger struck out five times and five at bats. It's a lot of strikeouts in one game. That's a lot of holes in the swing, right? But Pavetta, seven innings. Kmarlin's got two runs in the eighth inning. Pavetta, no decision. But Pavetta, terrific overall in his outing. The team improves, you know, they're now five and one in his last six starts. And eight and five now, I believe, on the season when Pavetta takes the ball. But another shot in the arm. And you've had that lately with the starters. It really started last Sunday. When Kowski, Carter Crawford, Brian Bay last night. Pavetta, Tanner Howe, continued on Friday in the series opener against the Yankees. So Pavetta, again, a tip of the cap. Rough outing last time. Got the job done. Got the job done in a big way. Seven scoreless innings. Allow just one base hit. One of his best outings of his career, let alone the entire season. The second time this year, he has struck out ten or more batters in a game. Now, the first time he did it was against the Seattle Mariners. And the way the Mariners have struck out this year, they lead the majors in strikeouts. They have struck out ten or more times in pretty much 95% of their games. I don't know what the exact percentage is, but that's not exaggerating. They've struck out five times or less in less than five games this year. We'll put it that way. And they're almost, they're approaching 90 games on the season. You strike out ten in the season debut back in what, late March in Seattle? You strike out ten against the Marlins. It counts towards the stats, but those are two teams. A lot of holes in the lineup. A lot of holes. But again, you pick up the victory, you feel good going to New York. I'm still wondering, I was going to text for email, Dave O'Brien. I'm not name dropping there, but Dave does respond to when I text an email most times. I was going to text. They're probably on the plane to New York in the next 40 minutes from South Florida. Maybe by seven. Are they flying into New York during the fireworks tonight in New York City? Again, I'm not going out. I'm going to go get a bite to eat after we're done here and then come home. I'm in the house the rest of the night. I'll flip it on the NBC, one of the channels, wherever the Boston fireworks are going. That's where I'm at later tonight. But the Red Sox might see from the air, they may even be held up somehow, some way. Maybe I'll text Dave that tomorrow or email him on that as well. Numbers of the day, when we come back as the Red Sox pick up another sweep, and they are, the road warriors right now, one of the best road teams in Major League Baseball so far to this point in the Major League Baseball season. Nine games to go before the all-star break for the Red Sox. Now, it's season I, eight games over 500. Look ahead with Tanner Hauck on the mound against the scoffling. Struggling New York Yankees after this. Yeah, I dropped in after this right there. There's no commercial. We're running the commercials. We're running the live reads here. They'll open up a three-game series now against the Yankees and the Bronx on Friday night. Three-game series against the Yankees, Red Sox a couple of weeks ago, really got on track. It's been a great stretch. And it started with that stretch where they had six in a row against two of the top teams in baseball at that point in time, the Phillies, who are still one of the top teams in baseball. And the Yankees who, again, they've fallen off a little bit. They've got a terrific cushion. But right now, they are looking up at the Baltimore Orioles and the AL East Division as well. So the Red Sox, again, Tanner Haupte on the mound, will get into that pitching match up against Nestor Cortez and the opener. You know, it just seems like the Yankees need something. I don't know if it happens on Friday before the series opener. Somebody gets into the minors, something. If George Steinbrenner were alive, and I believe George Steinbrenner born July 4th or July 3rd. Might have been in July 4th, birthday for the late George Steinbrenner. Anyway, something, something would happen tonight for the Yankees. Just think back to all those years. Yankees are struggling on the struggle bus. They're driving the struggle bus right now. But with that, you know, George Steinbrenner absolutely would have made a move right before tomorrow night series opener. Something to just take the attention off a team that has not won two in a row since they won four straight. And now you're going back to, you know, between early and mid-June. They won four in a row series finale to avoid. I think a sweep in home against the Dodgers. Then they won three in a row in Kansas City against the rules. They've not won two in a row since that four game winning stretch. Again, you're going back a few weeks now for the Yankees with that one. Our numbers of the day, eight. Red Sox with the win 12 inning victory against the Miami Marlins to complete the series sweep. Now eight games over 500 for the first time this season. The hit streak did end at 17. Connor Wong came into the game as a pinch hitter and Alex Cora is not the first manager. Let's not get on Alex Cora for this. He's not the first manager this season. I was going to look it up. I have hit streaks of 15 or more this season and the hit streak is back. Let's love that. But he's not the first manager to send a hitter up on a hit streak to pinch hit in a game where that hit streak came to an end. Wong to a bats struck out in both of his bats. I mentioned the eight games over 500 for the first time this year. How about five? Five, five, five. Let's get it in the screen there. Five, five. Let's get the thumb in there with the big thumb fat thumb. Five sweeps now on the season for the Red Sox. They've all come on the road. Eleven games over 500 now away from home. The Red Sox are one of the top teams in baseball when it comes to playing on the road this year. The Sox are the road warriors. Get to better than 500 at Venway. Start playing winning baseball consistently at Venway. This team is going to be between 10 and 15 games over by let's say end of July early August. This team really could be in that 10 to 15 game over 500 mark at that point in time. Just continue to play consistent baseball. Just continue to run balls out. They've got speed and they're doing that. And so that's just pointing out a positive right now. These guys run balls out. They grind base it to the outfield. They're taking a hard turn around first. There's a bobble, Hamilton, Duran, Rafaela. These guys are going to be at second base. They give themselves that opportunity. Very rarely. Have you seen a Red Sox hitter not hustle out of the box. Tyler O'Neill hustles out of the box. It's not when it's convenient for them. It's not half the time. It's 95% or more. There's your number. The Red Sox hustle out of the box. Round ball slowly hit. They're thinking I'm going to reach. I'm going to get a 95% plus. This team hustles out of the box. Again, another good sign of things to come. So Tanner Hack is going to go for his eighth win of the season. He'll get the start against Nester Cortez in the series opener against the Yankees and the Bronx on Friday night. Like Pavetta, how rough time of it last time out. And that was on his 28th birthday last Saturday at home at Fenway against the Padres. Went four and a third. And he's gave up three home runs, gave up eight runs total, seven earned runs. The club 11 and 6 now in his 17 starts had been 7-0 in his previous seven outings before that clunker last Saturday at home against San Diego. So Tanner Hack, Nester Cortez, Friday. Joshua Kowski, Garrett Cole, the pitching match up on Saturday. That one doesn't scare me. And then Cutter Crawford and Luis Heale going in the finale. That'll be Sunday night baseball to wrap up that three game series in the Red Sox. Home next week, three against Oakland, three against Kansas City. And right now eight games over 500. They've got that cushion. Pedal to the medal. Yankees are struggling right now. Step on their neck over the next three games. Win game one, you give yourself an opportunity to win the series on Saturday with Joshua Kowski on the mound. So it will be Tanner Hack against Nester Cortez. Looked up the numbers for Cortez, Raffi Devers. Three for 11. Career against Nester Cortez. A double two home runs, five runs batted in. Also striking out five times in those 11 at bats. Rob Refsnider likely to be in the lineup against Nester Cortez. Six for 10 and a couple of doubles as well. The Yankees are just one in four and as previous five starts and did not make out of the fifth last time out on the road against Toronto, giving up three earned runs in that outing as well. So that is going to do it for us. Red Sox complete the series sweep on the road in Miami. Win it in 12. Did it need to go in 12? No. Did Nick Pavetta toss seven scored a sentence and do a terrific job on the mound in the finale against the Marlins? Absolutely he did. Red Sox now eight games over 500 might be in the air heading into New York as the fireworks go off to celebrate our nation's birthday. If you are out there celebrating, you've got fireworks at home or on the road or at a beach somewhere, please, please be safe. Remember, supporting our sponsors is also supporting us.
