The Red Sox continued their winning ways on the road and Brayan Bello delivered a much-needed quality outing in the Red Sox 7-2 win over the Marlins Wednesday night in Miami.  Bello gave a 1st-inning run and that was it for the rest of the night.  He went 6.2 innings and allowed 1 earned run on 7 hits.  He walked only 1 and struck out 7 in picking up his 8th win of the season and 2nd over his last 6 outings.  Bello gave up a pair of 2-out singles in the 7th and gave way to Brennan Bernardino, who managed to get the final out to strand two runners.

Sox offense was not at its best and squandered plenty of opportunities over the first 6 innings, but did chase Marlins starter Trevor Rogers, who threw 84 pitches over his 3 innings of work.  Boston went in front with 2 runs in the 3rd.  Rafael Devers tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI Single and Masa Yoshida made it 2-1 with an RBI single of his own.  Yoshida picked up his 2nd RBI of the game with an RBI groundout with the bases loaded in the 7th.  Devers with the Sox 2nd triple of the game in the 8th inning and that scored Tyler O'Neil all the way from 1st.  Devers 2 hits, 2 RBIs, his 4th triple of the season and he now has 999 career hits.

Red Sox added on late with 3 more runs in the 9th on a 2-out, 3-R Double from Ceddanne Rafaela, who had a Double, Triple and 3 RBIs.   Sox went 5-for-20 with Runners In Scoring Position and left 12 runners on base.  Sox are now 10 games over .500 on the road this season at 26-16.  They've won 4 straight and 8 of their last 9 away from Fenway Park.

PostCast Notes-  Sox streak of 12 straight games with a home run came to an end.

Connor Wong went 2-for-5 with 2 singles and he extended his hit streak to 17 straight games.  It's the longest active hit streak in the Majors.

Nick Pivetta goes in the finale on Thursday afternoon as the Sox will look for the series sweep before heading to New York to open up a 3-game series against the Yankees Friday night.

[MUSIC PLAYING] It's the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. [MUSIC PLAYING] You are a Lockdown Red Sox post-cast, part of Lockdown Sports Boston, on the Lockdown Podcast Network. Your team, every day. [MUSIC PLAYING] Well, talk about a shot in the arm. Brian Bayo delivering in the Sox victory against the Marlins Wednesday night in Miami, Red Sox offense. Good enough. Wanted to pull the hair out on a couple of occasions, but once they took the lead, able to add on. Welcome to the Lockdown Red Sox post-cast. I'm Steve Lennox, longtime baseball play-by-play announcer, national show host as a kid of the '80s. Watch the Red Sox games on a small black and white TV. Former Big League pitcher, Scott McGregor, once told me, I had more useless information than any person he had ever met. I still, to this day, take that as a compliment. We are providing reaction to every Red Sox game on the Lockdown Sports Boston YouTube channel as well as a Lockdown Red Sox podcast feed, which is free and available wherever you get your podcast and where Gabby Hurlebut produces in-depth Red Sox content Monday through Friday. Not only are we providing reaction, we want your reaction as well. If you are with us on the Lockdown Red Sox YouTube feed live, then you can enter your comments. Introduce yourself to us as we continue to build our audience and comment on tonight's victory over the Marlins. Red Sox do clinch the series, and they do pick up the win. We will be discussing Brian Bayo's-- well, Bayo, well, he made a sweat early, but he really settled in nicely and certainly showed us what he's capable of. And a milestone alert for Raffi Devers and Sedon Raffiila. He is just fun to watch day in, day out, night in, night out. Marlins got a run in the first inning against Brian Bayo. They got a run in the ninth inning against Greg Weisert. Nothing else the rest of the way. We'll talk about the Red Sox offense. And again, it was frustrating at times. But Bayo-- Bayo was really the story in this one across the board. Bayo gave up a couple of singles in the first inning. Jesus Sanchez, three-but-four batters in. They had a one-nothing lead. A strikeout, a block. And you thought, OK, here we go, a box second and third. But he managed to get the final out in that first inning. Recent weeks, you saw him not necessarily melt down, but just show frustration. Mental laps, whatever you want to call it. But just the one run in the first inning. Bayo settled in after that. One, two, three, second on nine pitches. One out walk and a double play off the bat of Josh Bell in the third inning, fourth inning, first two. Reaching with singles, a strikeout. And he left two runners on base. Bayo, six and two third inning, seven hits, one run, one earned run, a walk, and seven strikeouts. Retired 11 in a row before giving up hits to the last two batters that he faced in that seventh inning. I'm going to talk about Bayo here for a second. And also, I guess, going to story time as well. Because Bayo early on in this game did a terrific job in terms of getting hitters out early. We talked about it with Cutter Crawford on the mound in the series opener Tuesday night. But Marlon's go up there, they are aggressive. So I started paying attention to it with Bayo, okay? So just one of the first nine batters that he faced, actually one of the first 12 batters that he faced saw more than five pitches during the bat. So during my time in minor league baseball years ago, Bill Slack, and I can tie Bill Slack to Ted Williams and the Red Sox organization. 'Cause Slacker at the time was a pitching coach in the minor leagues for the Kansas City Royals. And with that, he would tell me every once in a while, on or off and forth, that is what we want from our pitchers. Four pitches are less during each of that. Now Bill Slack, many, many years, as the manager in the Red Sox minor league system with the Winston-Salem Red Sox in the Carolina league, his number 37 is retired in Winston-Salem. He's a member of the Canadian baseball hall of fame. He also threw a batting practice to Ted Williams' son during his long tenure with the Red Sox organization. He threw BP to John Henry. So Slacker, again, on or off and forth. A couple of years later, when the Wilmington franchise in the Carolina league was an affiliate of the Red Sox, Mike Cathar was a pitching coach. And I was out to lunch one day maybe with Kat and manager Chad Epperson. And we were talking pitching and I said, "Hey, have you ever heard on or off and forth?" And Kat looked at me like, "What does that mean?" "On or off and forth." "Where'd you hear that before?" I said, "Bill Slack used to be the pitching coach here "in Wilmington." He goes, "That's where I've heard it from." Because Mike Cathar at one point along with Bill Slack in the Atlanta Braves organization. So on or off and forth, how does that go with Brian Bayo? Brian Bayo faced 27 hitters total. And only seven batters of the 27 saw five or more pitches during it bad. That is going to benefit a pitcher over the course of an inning, over the course of a game. And the first four batters, and again, we know this about the Marlins. We've seen it in two games in a row. Bayo in the first inning gave up the run. The first three batters saw a total of four pitches. That was part of the game plan, I'm sure. Hey, used their aggressiveness early in the count to go after them. And he did that. He did it in a terrific fashion. He gave up a walk, then got a double play in one of the innings. And again, just seven of the hitters, 27 batters that he faced, saw more than four pitches during it bad. So little nostalgia for me going down memory lane, bringing up Bill Slack ties to 10, Williams, John Henry Williams, and the Boston Red Sox organization as well. So as I've said a handful of times, I thought, okay, he got through six. He's probably going to be done. Finish on a positive, right? But he went out there for the seventh inning and I loved it. Yeah, he gave up a couple of base hits. But prior to the two hits that he allowed with two outs in the seventh inning, third time through the lineup, the first seven batters didn't have a base hit against him. And again, he was cruising right along. At one point before giving up that first of two, straight two outs singles in the seventh inning, he retired 11 straight batters. So for Brian Bayo, six and two third innings, one earned run allowed. Again, he retired 11 in a row at one point. And picks up the victory. A much needed strong star for Bayo. I don't know who it's bigger for. Bayo or the Sox. It's big for both. It might be right there equal footing. He'll likely have one more start before the all-star break. You would expect that it would be at Fenway early next week against the Oakland A's. And you go after that young lineup. They've got some bopers in the lineup too. But Will Middlebrook's first Nesson reference of the night with Dave O'Brien on the Nesson broadcast talked about Bayo working in the four-seam fastball. Really hasn't used it this year. Through over, I think between 10, between 11 and 15 four-seam fastballs, but his change-up was effective. He worked down in the zone, was throwing 98.99 with that four-seam. He can get it up there, 98.99. But it was down in the zone. Or if it was up in the zone, it was up letter higher above. Nothing in the middle of the plate. Nothing in the middle of the plate. That was terrific. Kevin hits the loud three in the first, and he tuned his last inning of work in the seventh inning. And not much else in between. Again, he gave up a walk in and any next batter, first pitch, ground ball, double play out of the frame. And he just looked comfortable on the mound. He had a presence on the mound. Even in that first inning, the box, second and third, you're thinking, "You're watching a game like me?" Uh-oh, here we go. It's one-nothing. It might be three-nothing here with one swing. Didn't happen. And Jarron Duran helped him out. Alfield tonight was terrific. That's a big outfield in Miami at Lone Depot Park. And Duran, I think it was off the bat of Bell, lefty batter, sixth inning maybe. And Duran went and got it. And Duran can track it down with the best of him. Not only has he really settling into a terrific hitter at the big league level, he's also really starting to establish himself as a terrific defender as well. And we know that didn't get off to a great start to his big league career. But Bell hit that bomb. You knew it was hit well off the bat, but Duran tracked it down. And as the ball sort of carried and you got Duran in that picture. It wasn't a can of corn, but he tracked it down with ease. And has that ability. He's building it. And it's great to see. Another guy who's building it is Satan Raffaiella as well. Red Sox pick up the win. Also what they did as well. Trevor Rodgers lost now one and nine. The team three and 14 in his starts. But you know, Rodgers threw a ton of pitches. He went just three innings, 84 pitches. Didn't do a lot. Got the offense going, got the lead. Never gave the lead up once they took it. But really could have scored a lot more. Seven, two final, break it open. Four, one lead going to the ninth. Then in Raffaiella comes through. We'll go with the offense here in just a few moments. But Brian Bayo certainly something to work on going forward. And the Red Sox are now 10 games over 500 on the road this season. They've won four straight on the road. And eight of their last nine away from Fenway Park. So they pick up the victory. And again, they match their season nine. Seven games over 500 as well. Red Sox pick up the victory. We'll continue talking about it right here on our lockdown Red Sox post cast. On or off and four, Bayo certainly did that for the Red Sox on Wednesday night as the Red Sox have taken the first two games of the series. And now we'll look for the series sweep against the Marlins on Thursday. Lockdown Red Sox post cast part of the lockdown sports Boston network. Your team every day. inning one run in the seventh inning four runs in the ninth inning they scored four runs in that ninth Dom Smith had a tough night at the plate over four did walk in that ninth inning but struck out three times he went down looking all three at bats the Red Sox down one nothing divers infield base hit that scored Rob ref Snyder sent Tyler O'Neill to third base in the third inning and Masa Yoshida reached on an infield base hit Yoshida starting to heat up and I like his approach at the plate but a little ground ball and picked up the base hit in the third inning that made it to one Yoshida in the seventh inning a ground out the third with the bases full that scored Raffi Denver's that made it three to one then in the ninth inning Divers with a triple Raffi Denver's with a triple that scored Tyler O'Neill all the way from first base and then say non Raffiella cleared the bases with a three run double that made it seven one and then Rivera had a sack fly in the bottom of the ninth inning against Weissert and that pretty much was the scoring for the Red Sox but they had their opportunities again they sent Trevor Rodgers packing after three innings he threw 84 total pitches in three innings that's not getting it done at the major league level Beyoh does pick up the win but the Red Sox this could have been easily a 15 one game this could have been a lap all right seven one until the bottom of the ninth inning Marlins get one more run that was it but the Red Sox went five for twenty with runners in scoring position and left twelve runners on base total that'll drive you a little bit nuts that's gonna make you want to pull out your hair every once in a while but they do pick up the victory a nice win on the road opportunity for a series sweep against the Marlins on on Thursday afternoon it's gonna be a one for ten first pitch with Nick Pavetta getting the start so if you look at the Red Sox starting pitchers over the last handful of games Tanner Hauck scheduled to go Friday in the series opener against the Yankees in the Bronx so Hauck last timeout took the loss four and a third and eight runs seven earned that was on his birthday last weekend then when Kauski Josh when Kauski is the guy who's got this latest stretch of three straight quality outings for the starting pitchers and when Kauski oh well you know he only went five he doesn't really get started credit for a quality outing he could have gone six then he threw 58 pitches he left on a positive note okay I'm calling that a quality outing he went five scoreless against the Padres and remember the Padres in the previous two games against Pavetta and Hauck all sorts of offense twenty runs and I think what 15 in the fifth inning alone in those two losses last Friday and Saturday at home at Fenway so when Kauski a victory Crawford a win on Tuesday night in the series opener Beo picks up the win as well his Beo earning the win for the Sox and you know overall Beo again overall he's been solid this year his eighth win on the season but his ERA is still right around that five mark you'd like to see Beo 14 16 wins ERA let's see if he can trim a run off that earned run average over the course of the rest of the season second half of the season if he's pitching and winning games and his ERA is a run less mid-September late September Red Sox on the postseason I'd be just a wild card I don't care if you think that's an asterisk next to it or not if Beo is an above 500 pitcher 14 16 wins range again he's his eighth of the season second and his last two second and his last six outings and he picked up the victory you'll take it but let's see him lower that earned run average six and two thirds what it go down to it went down to 519 so I'm not doing the math right now and you don't want me to do the math right now but overall the way Beo is capable of pitching everything was working for seeing fastball first time this year will middle Brooks mention that on the nest and broadcast with Dave O'Brien touched down that already the change up the sweeper those pitches that he has the ability to throw and hey everyone can hit 97 98 in the major leagues that's nothing new it's not but it's about location just like in real estate pitching location location location location Beo much better with the command down in the zone I think it was almost one for one ground ball fly ball outs over the course of the game let's talk a little masa Yoshida couple of base hits three hits in the opener two hits two RBI's in game two of the series and now 11 hits over his last seven games and like Beo on the Mount Wednesday night just looks more comfortable to play his approach able to go the other ways the left handed batter stay on that pitch let it travel in the zone and go the other way again a little swiver picked up an RBI base it but he put the ball in play and I'm liking Yoshida right now there's a little bit more pop in that that he's a doubles guy he can certainly pepper the green monster at Fenway we've seen him do it but imagine that that comes along just a little bit more just a little bit more over the course of the next couple of weeks leading into the all-star break and then leading into the second half of the season Dom Smith did have a tough night did extend the ninth inning but it was over four three strikeouts and that was part of the wanting to kind of pull my hair out at one point it was a tough night at the dish for the Red Sox hitters until it wasn't and they do pick up the victory winning seven two they've won the first two games of the series against the Marlins and we'll have an opportunity for a series sweep coming on Thursday again first pitch at one ten Nick Pavetta gets to start we'll touch on Pavetta coming up here in just a moment at discover dot com slash credit card so we have given you a lot of numbers already but the Red Sox picking up the victory against the Marlins on Wednesday night seven to the final Red Sox forty six and thirty nine seven games over five hundred once again they've won four in a row on the road and the number there ten now ten games above five hundred away from Fenway Park a straight did come to an end for the Red Sox in the seven to victory they had at least one home run in each of the previous twelve games at a season high and what twenty two home runs over the course of that twelve game stretch so that does come to an end seventeen the number for Connor Wong he's now hit safely in in seventeen straight games for the Red Sox five five batters in the lineup with two head games again four straight wins on the road plus ten ten games over five hundred on the road and matching their high water mark for the season seven games over five hundred a series sweep on Thursday against the Marlins and the Red Sox would be a season eight games over five hundred going into their series Friday night against the Yankees in New York that'll be a three game series off day next Monday then before the all-star break the Sox close out with six games at home at Fenway three against Oakland and three more against the Kansas City Royals so Nick Pavetta does get the start and the Red Sox have done the job offensively in terms of getting into the bullpen so I mentioned the number just going one more you know five base hits let's look at the positive number for the Red Sox with runners in scoring position on Wednesday they had twenty opportunities with runners in scoring position five for twenty overall but we stress the fact that they had twenty opportunities over nine innings with runners in scoring position say Don Raffiella came through a big with a three run double in the ninth inning so Nick Pavetta gets the start for the Red Sox and we can kind of continue with our numbers of the night segment here Pavetta three of his last four starts four innings four and a third four innings last Friday against the Padres chase from the game and the fifth inning did not record a record an out in that fifth inning so Pavetta four and five on the air gets a start in the series finale and we'll see how he does the Sox have won four of his previous five outings so let's see if he can make that five out of six Pavetta gets a start against Kyle Tyler twenty seven year old right hander first season with the Marlins 2021 with the Angels 2022 with the Padres did not pitch at the big league level last year all in one record so far three games two starts for Miami was with the team late April and then back to the minors and then back up to the big league club in June last Friday took the loss gave up just one earned run over four and two third innings and a two nothing loss on the road against the Phillies in Philadelphia so it's Pavetta and Kyle Tyler yes Kyle Tyler with two first names that is the pitching match up is the Red Sox are going to be looking for the series sweep against the Marlins and it's going to be you know sweep the Marlins absolutely go into that series against the Yankees on a roll Yankees right now playing the Cincinnati Reds and the Reds took the opener Tuesday night did not see the last time I think the Reds had a one run lead so the Yankees are sort of scuffling here so you can go into the Bronx and take two out of three again and then you've got four wins and six meetings with the Yankees with a week to go before the all-star
