Brayan Bello worked 2 scoreless innings to open and then it all fell a part with him allowing 7 earned runs and not making it out of the 3rd inning Tuesday night in what turned into a 9-4 loss to the Blue Jays.  Series is even at 1-1.  Jaren Duran went 0-for-5 with 2 strikeouts and his career-high, 15-game hit streak came to an end.  Rafael Devers and Tyler O'Neil both hit home runs in the loss.  Bello allowed the 1st 6 batters to reach in the 3rd inning.  Vladimir Guerrero had a 2-run double to make it 4-2.  George Springer hit a 2-run home run to make it 7-2.  Josh Winckowski made his first appearance since being brought back up from the minors and he was terrific.  Winckowski gave up 2 earned runs on 6 hits and he struck out 8 over the final 6 innings.  Red Sox have hit at least 1 home run in 8 straight games and 16 total during that stretch.  Red Sox committed 3 errors in the loss.  The series will close out on Wednesday with Kutter Crawford making the start for the Sox.  Red Sox have won their previous 6 series finales.

[MUSIC PLAYING] It's the Lock-Dawn Podcast Network, your team every day. [MUSIC PLAYING] You are a Lock-Dawn Red Sox post-cast, part of Lock-Dawn Sports Boston, on the Lock-Dawn Podcast Network. Your team, every day. Well, that was an ugly one. Sox lose to the Blue Jays, who even up the series at a game of peace with a 9-4 victory against Red Sox at Fenway on Tuesday night. One ugly inning spelling dune for the Red Sox. Bayo has hit a couple of little bumps in the road recently. Tuesday at Fenway against the Jays, he had a big bump in the road. Cause of concern for Bayo and the Sox scale 1 to 10. Like we're looking at about a 9, 9 and 1/2. Devers and O'Neal go deep. Doran's hit streak comes to an end. We welcome you into the Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast. I'm Steve Lennox. Baseball play-by-play announcer, Shoho, spending times in the minors calling games in Batavia, New York, Wilmington, Delaware, Staten Island, New York, Aberdeen, Maryland, six college baseball originals for the ESPN Network. Coverage the inaugural World Baseball Classic in Tokyo, Japan, and in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA baseball events in Carrey, North Carolina, also in Houston, and Minneapolis as well. So the Red Sox, all right, even series. First one win of the season for the Blue Jays. There will not be a sweep of this series, which would have been 10 in a row in terms of the Red Sox and the Blue Jays. We do welcome you in to the show. We are providing reaction to every Red Sox game on the Lock-Dawn Sports Boston YouTube channel, as well as the Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast feed, which is free and available wherever you get your podcast. Not only are we providing action and reaction to every game, we'd like to encourage you to join us as well. Audience participation, at some points, going to be a must. We'll build that audience. We'll continue to build it. Remind you as well that Gabby Hurlebot does provide Red Sox analysis Monday through Friday, again, on the YouTube channel. And wherever you get your post podcast as well. So all right, a bump on the road, a big bump on the road. On tonight's broadcast, we're going to talk about Bayo and his rough third inning. Did not get past the third inning. The defense taking a step back again. When it can be ugly for the Red Sox defensively, it can get ugly. It can get real ugly. Devers is, I think, right on the cusp. He's right there. And even when he had a little bit of a funk on the road trip in Cincinnati, I think he had an 0 for 11 at one point, and he was on some pitches, just missing him. Our latest Red Sox locked on-- our latest episode of the Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast is brought to you by PrizePix. So Brian Bayo, that's where we start, because he really didn't give the team a whole heck of a lot of opportunity to-- you know, lights were turned out in the third inning. Bayo got a double-play ground ball in the first, a line-drive double-play to Dom Smith in the second inning. And like a start last week against the Blue Jays, first time this year where Bayo is making back-to-back starts against the same team, but a lot of traffic on basis. Third inning, you want to talk about traffic. The first six batters reached in the inning. Two scoring on a single by Keir Meyer. He went to third on the error by the right fielder in that situation, Bayo then walking two in a row. Vlad Guerrero Jr., just a matter of time, terrific hitter. We know that, but he's been quiet so far, held in check, two certain degrees, tax and balls on a home run and the Red Sox come back victory on Monday. But Vlad Jr., 2 RBI, double, 4-2 ball game, Turner, finally and out. Hit one on the ground to first. Smith had the ball get behind it, but he was able to get the throw to Bayo covering the bag on the play though, Turner ground out, RBI 5-2. And then Springer, the two run home run, that made it 7-2, that was all for Brian Bayo. And getting back to that Turner play for just a moment, I'd be pulling my hair out right now. If somehow, some way, Brian Bayo didn't get over there to cover the bag, but he did. There wasn't a lapse there. The two walks to put the more runners on base and then the Guerrero base hit that knocked in a couple, the home run, he got the out there, but that was it. After that, Bayo was done for the night, two and a third in each five hits, 700 runs, three walks, hit pattern and two strikeouts. So during the game, I was wondering, is there a move to be made here? And throughout the game, I was thinking, okay, what happens here? Is Bayo going down? Do they consider sending Bayo down? And when we say down in baseball, that is going down, we're sending him down. That means the minor leaks. But as the game unfolded and really just kind of, final prep in the last couple of minutes before going live here, with our latest edition of the lockdown Red Sox postcast, when Kalski goes six innings, the bullpen will be part of our number, numbers of the night and our third segment. But Bayo, perhaps, when Kalski getting into him, he showed you he can give you six. I mean, basically a quality start. He can go six innings. He threw 91 pitches. He's been extended. So during the game thinking, sometimes you just, you have to go with a pitcher and maybe being sent down for a period of time to work on things, maybe that would be best for Bayo. Maybe another option is you send him to the bullpen for a week or two. Maybe you send him to the bullpen through the all-star break. He can be your long reliever. Then when he comes back, hey, you're going five. And then you build it up. Because right now, he needs something that's gonna be a confidence booster. And it's just not there right now. It can come back and it can come back in a hurry. But where you're at right now, as a team, as we approach July, and this is the final week of the month of June, there's just too much about Brian Bayo right now where it's like, you gotta think about other options. Again, during the game like, would they actually consider sending him down to the minor leagues, work on some things? He wouldn't be the first. So that's why I have that idea. But overall, when Kowski, he deserved to stay up, but he's lost. I mean, he's basically a starter right now. You don't have him. You've got the day off Thursday, but you don't have him back until the weekend unless you send him down. And that is a possibility. But the way he went tonight in terms of the bullpen, I have a hard time thinking that you can keep him there. But Bayo, talk about a guy who wants the month to come to an end. He would be scheduled if they had a game on Thursday, he'd be scheduled to go on Sunday in the final day of June, but he'll go into July and make his next start. If that's gonna happen, if he's gonna get another turn through the rotation again, this is just me thinking out loud right now. Does he go down? Again, down means to the minor leagues or do you throw him in the pen? Can you throw him in the pen through, right through the all-star break? Work him a couple of times. But really, right now, what might be best for him is to go down to the minor leagues and work on some things. Hey, this is what we need to work on. You go down, work on him, we want you back up. We need you for the second half. We need you right. He's not right right now. 23 runs, 22 earned in the month of June. And a handful of outings where he didn't make it through five innings. Can't have that every fifth day. Especially, you just had a bullpen day the other day in Cincinnati. Saturday, Sunday, you use the bullpen, you wore it out. And when Kowski, oh boy, did he give the team a shot in the arm? Not only a shot in the arm, O'Neill hits the home run makes it 9-4 and all of a sudden, okay, things are interesting. Divers had a strikeout with a couple of runners on. I think that was in the seventh inning. Nothing doing really in the eighth or ninth inning. But what he did for you tonight, that sets you up for tomorrow. That sets you up with the off day and then the series over the weekend against the Padres. But when you have a clunker like that from Bea, lasting just two in a third innings. When Kowski, what he was able to do, that is just huge. And you also have Chris Well, also available as a starter, they sent him down to continue on that role of, you know, in that starting role. So you might have a couple of options right now to spell Bea, off day, next scheduled start not until next week when Kowski's gonna need rest. But if you put him on the mound to start right now, he showed, you know, his outing two runs allowed. You'll take that. I mean, you'll take the fact that he went the rest of the way and you didn't have to burn through another arm. So the Red Sox fall and the series now even at a game of peace, nine for the final. And you move on from it. There's gonna be bumps in the road, but the three errors tying a season high. And, you know, the Red Sox right now as a team. Just looking at the final, yeah, three errors, five hits, four runs, two, two run home runs, Devers and O'Neill, your boppers, four, five in the lineup. But three errors and there's not a team. And the Red Sox lead the majors and errors. And that's a theme that we're gonna talk about all season long. They're going to lead the majors and errors, probably all season, unless they really sure things up. And the ball that Valdez could have made a play on, it least knocked it down, not allowing the ball to get to the outfield, a breyu on the ball that was hit to right, Keir Meyer, airmailing everybody. That ball's got to be picked up, tossed back in. And at that point, you go from there. But instead, Keir Meyer, two runs across. In the inning, two, two ball game, he's a third, nobody out. The damage was done from there. Vlad Guerrero, Jr., doing the job. And at nine to two, they got seven and a third, two more on the fourth. Nine to two, O'Neill the home run on the sixth inning. You're thinking, okay, what are we looking at here? Is Duran going to extend his hit streak? That was one thing I was thinking about. That did not happen, we'll touch on that. Duran didn't extend his hit streak. And also thinking, you know, hey, can they get back in this game? Can they somehow, some way, get back in the game? And then I was thinking, okay, how much are they going to stress this bullpen? How many relievers are they going to end up using? They used two, Wyser got the final two outs and relief a bail in the third and then Winkowski. Forget waiting to our final segment. There's your number of the night right there, two relievers. Two relievers and you go from there. So Duran's hit streak comes to an end. So I'm wondering, Duran wants to play every day, every single day, but I'm just wondering right now if Duran gets a day off. Now he gets a day off on Thursday. And I'm not saying this just because he went over five and his hit streak is over at 15 in a row. Let off the first, F8, third inning, line out to the center fielder, Karamire, again fly balled in the fifth inning and then he struck out in his final two at bats. Off night, off night for the Red Sox, move on. When the series tomorrow, when the series on Wednesday, going to the off day on Thursday, open up a three game series against the Padres on Friday, but you know, you're not going to give him two days off in a row, but boy, I think that would certainly do an awful lot of good for him. Remember, I think it was Satan Ramfiella had the finale off against the Blue Jays last Wednesday in Toronto. Then he had the off day in Cincinnati, you go from there. But an interesting lineup, you know, speaking of playing every day, Gosman right-hander on the mound of star for the Blue Jays. David Hamilton in the lineup. Valdez is a bat, had a base hit. Also had a walk, so he was on base two times. But David Hamilton in there, each and every single day, as much as you can. And I remember last week, I think he had something on the side for two weeks ago, had a little side issue, but he provides an awful lot for the team. Not to say that Valdez does not, but, you know, any time right now, I look at the lineup before the game when it's posted online. I'm looking for David Hamilton. Sox fall at home, series even, 1-1. Sox now two games under 500 at home and go for the win against the Blue Jays. And the Blue Jays came about about. They needed to win. They snapped the losing streak of seven in a row. So segment number two, we're gonna try something here. If you've been with us over the last couple of weeks as we've launched our Red Sox, locked on Red Sox postcast, thank you. Guilty is charged. I throw a lot of numbers out there. Here in segment number two on this Tuesday night talking about a 9/4 setback, I'm gonna try to go no stats here, all right? So Alex Cora, no stats. We're in the no stats zone right now. We are gonna hit some news and notes. Alex Cora telling the media prior to Tuesday night's game that he absolutely believes that Raphael Devers should be an all star. I said that last night, I agree with the manager 100%, no doubt, Raphael Devers. Based on history, based on reputation, based on the season that he's having as well. You look at the American League All-Stars at the third base position or potential All-Stars, Devers is right there. Devers is one of the best third baseman in the American League in all baseball. So in the American League you've got Jose Ramirez of the Guardians, no brainer. You've also got Jordan Westber of the Orioles. But Devers is right there. One, two, three, do they carry three third baseman? Can they say, you know, okay, you know, one of those guys is gonna get a pinch hit, one of those guys is gonna play third. Maybe one of those guys can end up as a designated hitter. You never know how things are gonna play. That's why I never get upset about all this guy wasn't even doing the All-Star team. Guys get injured, guys end up not going. Guys replace guys who are not going. That could happen. I don't think it happens with Iran. I think even if he's not voted in in the first wave, it's no longer managers around baseball filling out the reserves and the pitching staff. We'll get into that in just a moment. But Alex Corey telling the media again, Tuesday, Devers deserving, should be an All-Star. Agree 100%. A note on Liam Hendricks, how about this one? Hendricks is gonna throw his first bullpen later this week, that according to reports. It's interesting. It could be huge for the Red Sox. Coming off Tommy John's surgery, could be available out of the bullpen late July, early August. That's basically acquiring a guy like Liam Hendricks, a guy who can close out games, can't leave Jansing going three in a row. Hendricks has the ability to close out games. He's gonna throw a bullpen this week. If he's on track for late July, early August, July 10th, July 15th, Red Sox thinking right now, that's your addition to the bullpen. Liam Hendricks, guy's coming up from the minor leagues. That's your addition. Now with that, hey, wanna go out and get us, you know what, we are gonna identify a starter. We're going to knock on doors. We're gonna make phone calls. We're gonna send texts. We're gonna look and see what the starting market is. They already have a realistic idea of what the starting market is going to be. Everyone wants a starting pitcher. And every team who has a starting pitcher available, is gonna want a boatload in return. Whether it's a guy that contract expires at the end of the year, we call that a rental, or a guy who's got one or two more years on his deal. That's why I like Bassett of the Blue Jays. I think he could be tremendous pickup for a competitive team that wants the plane to October. But Hendricks again, great news, with the fact that he's gonna throw a bullpen. And then you go from there, you hope for the best. That's what they signed up for. And come on, you add Liam Hendricks late July, early August. He's had a positive impact on this team already, but he's gonna have an even more positive impact if he's contributing second half of the season after the all-star break. Absolutely 100%. You give him the eighth, you give Janssen the ninth, you give him opportunities on occasion, when Ken Lee might need a day off. You don't wanna use him three days in a row, you don't wanna use him twice in three days, all that often, going to the well too often. Possibly bring Liam Hendricks back, eighth inning guy, occasional ninth inning guy. I'll take it. Did not see anything during the game on Tristan Kosses. Cleared, perhaps, hopefully he's gonna be cleared to take baddie practice and begin that process. We touched on him last night. And last night thinking, you know, we might be looking at after the all-star break for his return. The imaging was Monday. They were expecting the results back 5 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. I don't think the Nessen broadcast, here's my first Nessen reference of the night. I don't think they ever brought that up during the course of the night. So Kosses, we'll see. Probably in the next, you know, probably tomorrow morning by noon Eastern on Wednesday, we'll have an idea of where Tristan Kosses is with that imaging coming back from the rib cage muscle. A couple of random thoughts here. Right now, I'm glad after Wednesday the Blue Jays and Red Sox don't play again for a while. They don't play again until after the all-star break. Because I'm kind of tired of seeing Justin Turner in a Blue Jays uniform. Because every time I see Justin Turner in a Blue Jays uniform, and if it's the city connects, I automatically think those are ugly. The Blues are terrific. But every time I see Turner in a Blue Jays uniform, I'm just thinking, boy, hey, I really still, I can't give up on it. Wish the Sox had signed him during the off season. I think he would have been an absolute plus for this club in so many different ways. Imagine with him, you know, Turner, Dever's O'Neill, O'Neill, Dever's Turner, put the lefty bat in front of it. In the middle of the two right handed bats, I think that would have been a real plus. I did vote on Tuesday, yes. So apparently you can vote up to five times every day for the all-star voting. It ends on Thursday at 12 p.m. Eastern. The second phase of voting begins, 12 p.m. Eastern on June 30th. And that ends at 12 p.m. Eastern on July 3rd. So that would be next Wednesday, week from today. Pictures, position players, reserves, they're chosen through now a combination of the player's ballot selections and choices made by the commissioner's office as well. So they over the years have taken that out of the hands of managers. And I've got one more for you because this is from the victory for the Red Sox on Monday where the NBA champion Boston Celtics weren't attendance. Steve Buckley covers the Red Sox, covers Boston for the athletic is online article. Here's a paragraph. Only now are local citizens awakening from the party. And for some, only now are they awakening to the reality that the Red Sox written off during spring training as little more than a collection of hopeless hasbins and hopeful maybes are suddenly playing just about the best baseball in baseball. It's a great paragraph from Steve Buckley of the athletic. Now, they were playing the best baseball in baseball right up until Tuesday night. Again, a clunker. You move on from it, you go from there. Again, locked on sports Boston, the number one place to hang out immediately after every game, Sox, J's even won a piece. See terms at discover.com/creditcard. - All right, so Cutter Crawford gets a start for the socks in the series finale. And you want to see Crawford go out there and turn in a solid outing. Wyser two thirds of an inning, got the final two ounce in relief of Beyo on Tuesday night and a nine four loss to the Blue Jays. But our first number of the night is the number two. Two relievers used after your starter goes two and a third innings. Wyser again two thirds of an inning. When Cowsky six innings, six hits, two runs, both earned, walked one, struck out eight, 91 pitches. So your starter does not make it out of the third, use two relievers the rest of the night. Take it, run with it, and maybe some decisions are gonna be made on how they go forward with everything, but just two relievers. So the series now even won one, right? So the Red Sox in the series finale, they've won six straight. The final game of a series, did it against the Phillies, did it against the Yankees on the last homestand, did it in the two series prior to the Phillies series at Fenway. And then last week winning the series finale, sweeping the series last Wednesday in Toronto against the Blue Jays, dropping the opener last Friday and Cincinnati winning the next two, including the finale on Sunday against the Reds. So when the series feel good about yourself, going to the off day, just like they did last week when they completed that sweep in Toronto, and then you go from there. The three errors, again, tying a season I, 62 on the season, no one is even close to that number. The Marlins have 53, and the Marlins are way below 500. Devers and O'Neill, the home runs, and now for the Red Sox, the number eight. Red Sox have had at least one home run in eight straight games, 16 with a two on Tuesday night during that eight game stretch. Remember when the Red Sox were only hitting solo home runs? Yes, I keep track of a lot of useless information. I'll be the first to admit that. But the Red Sox now have six straight, remember, they don't have a grand slam this season. They've got six straight two run home runs. Cutter Crawford gets a start, four and 12. That's the Red Sox record so far, and the 16 starts this season. Crawford just won win in his previous nine starts, last Friday against the Reds. One, six and a third gave up five runs, three earned, gave up three home runs in that game, two to Candelaria, one to India, and all three were solo shots. So he'll get the start, and he'll get the start against Yariel Rodriguez, then the off day on Thursday. Now Rodriguez was with the Blue Jays in April. Went down to the minors, back up, started last Friday against the Guardians in Cleveland. Went just in any and a third, gave up five runs total, four earned, walked three, struck out one, and what turned out to be a seven one loss. So Rodriguez and Crawford, the pitching match up, the rubber game of the three game set between the Blue Jays and the Red Sox, they will not see each other again until after the all-star break. Don't want to say the midpoint because the midpoint is actually going to be coming for the Red Sox. How do you like that? The Red Sox tomorrow is going to be game number 81 of the Red Sox season. So if they win on Wednesday, there'll be 44 and 37 going in to that off day. If they lose and drop the series to the Blue Jays with a loss on Wednesday, 43 and 38, we all know 44 and 37 looks a heck of a lot better than 43 and 38. Nine for the final, Blue Jays pick up the victory. They're first of the season against the Red Sox. They also snap their long losing streak as well.
