The Red Sox closed out their successful road trip with a 7-3 win over the Reds on Sunday afternoon.  Red Sox went 5-1 on their trip through Toronto and Cincinnati and now return back home to Boston for a 6-game homestand.  Jarren Duran had 3 hits and has hit safely in 13 in a row.  Rob Refsnyder and Connor Wong both him 2-run home runs.  Wong's 2-R Home Run in the 4th broke a scoreless tie.  Wong has hit safely in a career-high 13 straight games.  Refsnyder's home run with a man on came in the 6th inning and made it 7-1.  Red Sox used Zack Kelly as the Opener, and he went 2.2 scoreless.  Kelly was the first of 8 pitchers used on the day. Red Sox are now a season-high 6 games over .500.  Club has won 7 of 8 and 9 of 11.  Kenley Jansen worked a scoreless 9th inning for his 15th save of the season and the 435th of his career.  Red Sox have scored 6 or more runs in 11 of their 13 wins in the month of June.

On today's show, we're gonna talk about the bullpen coming through in a big way, back-to-back days really. Connor Wong, Jaren Duran, what do they have in common? They both extended hit streaks in Sunday's victory in the finale against the Reds. Later on, we'll have plenty of numbers for you throughout our three segments. But numbers of the day coming up as well. Our latest episode of the Lock-Dawn Red Sox postcast is brought to you by PrizePix, the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports. Go to prizepix.com/lockdawnmlb and use the code all lowercase locked on MLB for a first deposit match up to $100, so a bullpen day. Six relievers used on Saturday in the comeback win against the Reds. Zach Kelly, the opener. Wasn't the starter? The opener. One, two, three, first for Kelly. Nice job. Second inning, gave up a lead off single dispenser. Steel, nothing else. Kelly retired the first two and the third inning, exited the game. Fourth inning, Raffi Divers, a lead off walk, the lead off man reaching. And then guess what? A home run with a run-around base, something they hadn't done over the previous five games on the road trip. And they hit plenty of dingers, long balls, big flies, whatever you want to call them. But a two-run home run up, the mat of Connor Wong. Now, Divers walked and a couple of borderline pitches. Nick Lidolo will get into Lidolo making the start and success that the Red Sox have had against opposing teams as top one or two pitchers to the ace of the number two guy. But Wong, the two-run home run on the first pitch that he saw jumped right on it. Second of the series, seventh on the season, with that big fly, two-run home run for Connor Wong. He extended his hit streak to 13 in a row. Duran RBI double, four-nothing lead. David Bell ejected by the home plate umpire, Todd Tischner, who was inconsistent with the balls and strikes on Sunday. I think that's one of the best ways you can say it. But David Bell ejected, sometimes managers. I'm not saying he got ejected on purpose. I know there was certainly frustration on the part of the Reds. They were frustrated on Saturday, of course, when they ran into a handful of outs. And David Bell's watching a team that should be 500 or better and playing below expectations. They've got it, young team. They make a lot of mistakes. And David Bell got ejected in that fourth inning. Bottom of the fourth, Ellie Day La Cruz. A quiet series, but a productive series for one of the young stars for the Cincinnati Reds. He had a lead-off double, Candelaria RBI's single. Benson came to the plate, Will Benson. Second and third, Greg Weisert. Bell behind the count, two and nothing. Benson fly out to the right fielder, 0 for 20 at that point. Sixth inning, David Hamilton got it going. Hamilton base hit with two outs. He's at second. Duran third, hit of the game, like Wong. Duran extending his hit straight to 13 in a row. Duran, his base hit, third of the game. That scored David Hamilton. And that was just the beginning. Five-one at that point. RBI's single for Duran. Rob Refsnider, boom, two-run home run. Another home run with a runner on base. The Sox are capable of doing that. So Refsnider with the two-run home run. O'Neill reached with a single. Four straight hits with two outs. So the two big innings for the Red Sox in the victory, scoring the four runs in the fourth inning and the three runs in the sixth inning. And they pick up to win now a season high. Six games, over 500 as they pick up the win. I mentioned Benson. Reds got to Brad Keller in the sixth. And Benson struck out first and third, 0 for 21. Next batter, Espinal, RBI's single, fair child, RBI's single, three runs across, seven-four at that point in time as Keller got roughed up just a little bit. But that turned out to be the final. As the Red Sox take care of business the rest of the way. But Benson, very quiet series. The guy's got some pop in his mat. His last played appearance in the eighth inning against Justin Slaton hit my pitch. Had to be taken out of the game in just a rough stretch right now for him. But the Sox pick up a nice win. How many relievers did they use? A lot. Did they get the job done for the most part? Absolutely. And Kelly established it. Two and two thirds, one hit, three strikeouts. I want to give this number later on. I'm going to give it right now. Because this is the kind of day that the Red Sox pen had. This is the day that the Red Sox bullpen day had, right? Kelly, Bernardino, Weiser, Boozer, Keller, Martin, Slaton, Jansen, Kenley gave up a hit in the ninth inning, nothing else to save his 15th on the season. It's early. But let's give you another number. Zero. Zero? Zero on Sunday. Zero walks from that list of pitchers. Kelly, reliever, the opener. And then you just went through. And how many relievers? Too many. Nine pitchers used. Eight in the bullpen. They got the job done. Bernardino got him out. Weiser scored listening. Boozer scored listening. Keller gave up the three runs in his inning of work. Martin scored listening. Slaton scored listening. Jansen scored listening. But the zero in there. Zero walks allowed by the pitching staff on Sunday in what turned out to be a 7-4 victory for the Red Sox. So they do pick up the win, a nice win. An absolutely terrific win. Red Sox got to the ballpark on Sunday. Win the game, win the series, five on one on the road trip. Five on one, better than four and two, right? We know that. You get on the plane. You get on the plane after the game on Wednesday, knowing you're going to Cincinnati with an off day. Knowing you can hit some restaurants. Maybe some sites are just staying in the hotel room. You got on the plane Wednesday night feeling good. You get on the plane Sunday early evening from Cincinnati going back to Boston. You're just feeling great right now. Leaving on a jet plane and leaving in a good mood. So I got to thinking about that. What does Alex Cora and his staff talk about after going five and one on a road trip? You're looking ahead now. You take three from the Blue Jays. You take two of three in Cincinnati after dropping the opener on Friday. What are they talking about? Do they shut it down for a couple of hours? Do they look to the Blue Jays later tonight? Or even Monday with the advanced scouting and the different things? You just saw the Blue Jays. You know what the Blue Jays are right now? They're a scuffling team. That's my word of 2024 with a struggling or scuffling team. You want to just step on their necks. You want to take the opener. You just, you want to take, again, getting ahead of myself, wanted to bring this up later. But overall, you don't go into a serious thinking, "Hey, we're going to sweep this team." You go into the serious thinking, "Hey, we're going to win the series." That's taking two of three from the Blue Jays. But the way they're scuffling right now, just continue doing the things that you're doing. There's a couple of things that the Red Sox don't need to address. Maybe it comes up. Maybe it doesn't. Maybe we just look at the numbers. But there are a couple of things with the Red Sox right now that I'll get into in the next segment. Again, with the win on Sunday, they go five and one on the road trip. They've won seven of eight, six games over 500 for the first time this year. Winners of seven of eight, nine of 11. Now 12 and one on Sundays. Go take that number for what it is. They've won four straight series and another thing, rubber game in the three game set. Came to the ballpark when the game Sunday, when the series five and one trip. Mission accomplished. The Red Sox now in the final game of a series, they've won six straight series finales. I think I got that right. It's not a tongue twister, but just trying to get that verbiage right. Long and around, both extend hit streaks as well. So the Red Sox pick up the win five and one trip, now home for six, three against Toronto. That series at Fenway starts on Monday, off day on Thursday, and then a three game series next weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Boston, against the Padres who are one of those teams at just kind of flirting with 500. Around a bit of a streak right now, entered Sunday looking for a series sweep at home against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox do pick up the win. Steve Lennox with you on the locked on Red Sox postcast talking about the Red Sox going five and one on their road trip through Toronto and Cincinnati. So there are a couple of things. Working in minor league baseball for many, many, many, many years, I'd often talk to managers, you know, minor league baseball for me development. It was all about development. That was always impressed upon me by managers. Okay, so when you're going well, sometimes you look at the things. I'm not trying to nitpick here, but there are a couple of things from the Red series where the Red Sox take two out of three, including the finale on Sunday afternoon, which is what we're talking about. If you want to chime in with us, if you're with us here on the locked on Red Sox podcast live on the YouTube channel, you want to jump in with the comments section, feel free, go right ahead, introduce yourself, join us. We'll go back and forth with the conversation with you as well. But this is something I kept track of throughout the course of the series. Okay, the Red Sox didn't have a lot of opportunities on Friday, oh, for fourth runners in scoring position. Three for 10 in the comeback went on Saturday, two for 11 with runners in scoring position on Sunday. So just add it up. I'm not looking at the individual games. We're breaking them down. Those are the numbers right there. They're five for 25 with runners in scoring position. Now they went after Nick Lidolo. He did not make it past the fifth and he continuing that trend over the last couple of weeks. We started again, it's sort of our starting point. We started with the homestand against the Phillies and the Yankees. And it was sort of like, you know, people helping me out, Sam Ekstrom, couple other people helping me out with the Red Sox, talking with Gabby Hurlebut as well, as we were getting underway with the launch of our locked on Red Sox postcast was like, yeah, you know, right now they're teetering and, you know, you're starting up with the Phillies and Yankees. What are we going to be talking about after both series are over and the homestand is over on that Sunday. We were talking about a impressive four and two homestand against the top two teams in baseball at that point in time. Right? And if you look at it, those teams have sort of, you know, they didn't head a wall, but their woes of late kind of started at Fenway. So with that, you just kind of look at things, five for 25, runners in scoring position over a three game series. Again, during the Philly series, Yankee series, the starters were out. I don't think a single starter, Zach Wheeler probably had the best outing of any starter on that last homestand for the Phillies from an opposing pitcher, but Ladolo done in the fifth inning, eight and two record, I think he was four known as previous four starts. They knocked him out early. They went after him, they got to him, and that continues a good trend. But again, not having success with runners in scoring position, also not having a lot of opportunities. Here's another number for you. And yes, we do our number of the day, number of numbers of the night in our last segment, but, you know, again, this is something, again, you've got speed guys, you've got guys who have speed. Go up there, you get your first pitch, you can get on base with a base hit, absolutely. But if you work the counts again, you get into the bullpen's earlier, over the course of game, one of a series, over the course of a three or four game series as well. Six walks total, just two in the first two games, four on Sunday in the finale, but six walks over three games, see that total build, see that total build. And then here's one more with the speed that you have, top of the lineup, bottom of the lineup. The lead off man reach base. Again, these are nitpick things right now. When you've had the success over the last, what, 10, 11, 11 days, right? Winners of nine of 11 with the victory on Sunday. But the lead off man on base just six times in the three games against the Reds. Just six times total, two in each game. Get the lead off man on, you put the pressure on. Get the lead off man on, a walk turns into a double for a guy like Duran, Rafaela, David Hamilton. So again, six walks total and the lead off man reaching just six times in the series and 27 innings total. So six out of 27 if you wanna do the percentage that way. But again, a Red Sox win. Is that nitpicking? Maybe to a certain degree. But when things are going well, you just wanna continue to look at that. Again, Connor Wong, Jared Duran, both extending head streaks, both at career highs now, both 13 in a row. You'll take that, you'll run with it. The nitpicking thing and the numbers that we look at, probably numbers, maybe they're not numbers, and Alex Corrin, his staff gets. Probably certainly not numbers that the Red Sox players get. Right, but just trends, not disturbing trends, but just things to take notice of. But again, seven runs across, that's outstanding. Six or more runs in the 11 and 11 of the 13 wins in the month of June for the Red Sox. The relievers, six on Saturday, seven. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Seven relievers on Sunday. Kenley gave up a hit to Della Cruz in the ninth inning, but Della Cruz had, you know, got a couple of hits here and there, ran into a couple of outs. There was a point where Raffi Devers was at second base, and Della Cruz was right behind him. And that kind of gave you an indication just how big Ellie Della Cruz is. First, Nesson reference, Kevin Eucolis, Dave O'Brien, entertained by them all weekend long, Kevin Eucolis back home in the Cincinnati area. They actually touched on Ellie Della Cruz. It's early to talk about what his future numbers are going to be in terms of years on a contract in dollar amount, but does he move from short stop in the future? I'd say probably that's their issue. That's their thing. Maybe that's a good thing to have. Maybe he's in center field in the future. He's got a can in the front arm, but again, there was just that picture of Ellie Della Cruz and Raffi Devers at second base. Devers was leading off the bag at one point in the game, and Della Cruz is a big human, he's a big human being. He got the single against Kenley Janssen in the ninth inning, but Janssen got the final out. Kenley Janssen is 15th save on the season and 16 opportunities, 435th of his career. Raffi Devers, going to mention Janssen in just a moment here as we knock down the table. Raffi Devers, one base hit on Sunday. Kind of a, can you say, quiet road trip? Tyler O'Neill, kind of quiet road trip. Devers I think got up to an 0 for 12, broke that on Saturday, but Raffi Devers, one hit on Sunday now, 13 hits away from 1,000 for his career, so that's a milestone that's coming up. The future Hall of Famer, Kenley Janssen. This is your first show with us. That's how I referenced Kenley Janssen going forward. That's been established. The future Hall of Famer, Kenley Janssen. 15 saves and 16 opportunities. Came in, bottom of the ninth, then in clean, and then get the final three outs he did. Gave up a single, but that was it. Two out base hit. Retire the lead-off hitter. And maybe I go back at some point and see what his numbers are against lead-off hitters. Because of late, it seems like he gets the lead-off hitter just about every time. But there's going to be a bump in the road here for Kenley Janssen. And they allude to it often when he pitches, where he's 91, 92, and then all of a sudden he'll rear back and get a 95, 96, 97 in there. But sooner or later, they'll be a blown save. Again, just like losing Friday, you're going to lose some ballgame. You still won the series after losing the opener. There's going to be a bump in the road. It's not allowing that to snowball. And the Red Sox didn't allow for a second straight loss, came back on Saturday. But Kenley's going to have a bump in the road, maybe as a bad week. They'll blown save and picks up of win or something, or does come in with runners on base in the eighth inning in a tight situation and gives it up. But overall, that just seems like a guy you want in the dugout, in the bullpen, in the clubhouse, and on a plane ride home, from a five and one road trip as well. So the Red Sox do pick up the victory. Again, five and one trip through Toronto and Cincinnati. And you take it, you run with it, you love it, and you move forward as well. So again, bullpen used. Gassed, taxed, I don't think so, necessarily. Nobody threw a ton of pitches. Chase Anderson was also up for the Red Sox, maybe just in case they added a runner too in the top of the ninth, then he took the safe situation away. But overall, the Red Sox bullpen got the job done over the last two days. Keller, you could say, labored on Sunday, gave up the three runs and one inning. But everyone else, scoreless frames, got the job done. So they're being used, are they being overused? I think you can sort of say that they're being protected to a certain degree along those lines. Blue Jays come to town, open up a three game series against the Red Sox on Monday, Tanner Hough, scheduled to take the baseball in game one. We know what the Red Sox need from Tanner Hough on Monday night at Fenway Park. I'm gonna say it out loud when we continue. This is the Red Sox, locked on Red Sox postcast, part of the Lockdown Sports Boston YouTube channel, also available wherever you get your podcasts. What the Red Sox need from Tanner Hough? Like talking about a no hitter, which I believe does not jinx what goes on on the field. I'm gonna talk about what the Red Sox need from Tanner Hough in just a moment. We know what they need from the ace. Hout a couple of starts ago. I said he's the definition of an ace right now. He knows how to stop, he knows how to go out there and stop a losing streak. He knows how to go out there and continue a winning streak and he knows on Monday, probably on the plane tonight from Cincinnati back home to Boston, understanding that he needs to go out there and give a quality outing. Now a quality outing is six innings or three earned runs or less at the major league level. So do we think that Tanner Hout needs to go out there and throw quality plus? I think so, Monday. Seven innings, three runs or less. Don't be in the fourth fifth inning at 75 plus pitches. Blue Jays know it. Blue Jays know the state of the Red Sox bullpen right now and again, I don't think anyone's been overused or overworked, but they've been going two days and three days, three days and four days. There was the off day on Thursday. They'll be an off day this upcoming Thursday, but you're going home. I'm not asking for a rain now. I don't think we're there, but you just want the Red Sox to get quality from Tanner Hout. Capable, absolutely, 100%. And Hout is going up against Chris Bassett for a second straight start. They both opposed each other and they're both gonna be going with an extra day of rest. So they faced off last Tuesday in game two of that series in Toronto. Red Sox picked up the victory in that game. So Hout is gonna get the start. Bassett last Tuesday, six innings, two runs, seven hits, two walks, 10 strikeouts. Can you get to him? Red Sox are gonna face three straight right-handers in the series. Chris Bassett, Kevin Gosman, you're gonna see them for a second straight start and then you get a look at Jariel Rodriguez for game three on Wednesday. But Hout gets the start. It'll be Hout Bayo and Cutter Crawford, the three games for the Red Sox. And with that, you think that the Red Sox are gonna be able to put things together and take care of the series as well. So you took care of Nicola Dolo who entered eight and two, coming into that game on Sunday. The Red Sox do take care of business there. Just looking for my numbers of the day. Do I have them? I'm really sure I do. That's all right, we'll figure it out. But Hout, we know he needs length. Red Sox need length from their ace on Monday in the series opener against the Blue Jays. Who, you know, you won three in a row. Guardians against the Blue Jays on Sunday had an opportunity for a series sweep, did not go and look at that one before we came live. But simple enough, Tanner Hout, go out there, get the job done, put up zeros early on and go from there. So for some reason I lost my numbers of the day sheet. I've given you plenty of numbers. So we'll just simply go with this number. All right, we're gonna go back to it. Because the number is zero. Zero walks allowed by Red Sox pitchers on Sunday in the victory against the Cincinnati Reds. Kelly, Bernardino, Wyser, Booser, Keller, Martin, Slaton, Janssen. Six relievers used on Saturday. I keep forgetting this number. Seven relievers, eight pitchers used total. Kelly's probably down on Monday and everyone else worked in any. Keller gave up the three earned runs in his inning, gave up four hits. All three runs were earned. Everyone else putting up the goose eggs. Bernardino actually was charged with a run in his third of an inning as well. So four runs allowed by the bullpen. But Zach Kelly got things going with the two and two thirds and zero walks. I don't know how many times the Red Sox have done that this year. I can look it up on baseball reference, have it for you on Monday and hit you with another number as well. But the Red Sox now, a season I, six, six games over 500, have not been five, six games over 500 since I think last September. And they pick up the victory now on the plane feeling good. Heading back home, we know exactly what the Red Sox need from Tanner Hauck in game one of the series against the Blue Jays on Monday night at Fenway Park. Red Sox will be back home for the first time since the Celtics clinched their 18th NBA title and franchise history and they celebrated that title with the parade on Friday in Boston. Our lockdown Red Sox postcast follows each and every Red Sox game all season long. Next home stand, next game, first of three against the Blue Jays, that starts on Monday. We are on within minutes of the last doubt. Six series left now for the Red Sox, 18 games left before the all-star break. Let's see where they're at. Now six games over 500. 18 games left before the road trip. So if you go 11 to nine, now you're eight games over that 500 mark. You're post season team right now, you're a playoff team. I don't want to hear, oh, they're in on the wild card. If we're going to say on one side of the mouth that winning the division doesn't matter anymore, then it doesn't matter how you get into the post season. Right now, six games over 500. You're battling that with a couple of teams in the AL Central for either the second or third wild card spot, the fifth seed or the sixth seed. Pains me to say that out loud, but that's where you're at right now. So if you go 11 and nine, nope, that's not the number. 11 and eight, nope, that's not the number. 11 and seven, 18 games, there you go, that's the number. When 11 games, when nine games go 500, you're still six over 500. At the break, you want better than that. You want better than 500 over the next 18, especially with the opponents that are coming up. You're going to go to the all-star break, opening up some eyes and people saying, you know what, post season club, absolutely. And then you go from there. Again, our lockdown Red Sox postcast follows each and every Red Sox game throughout the regular season. And as we're saying, fingers crossed for the post season as well. Blue Jays Red Sox first, a three from Fenway Monday night. We're going to be on board late Monday night within minutes of the last out of the game with our latest edition of the lockdown Red Sox postcast.
