leaping up now ball is gone that's a home run the rod of our decent team as well I fly down the right field line headed toward the pesky pole that one tucked in that ball is going to lead against the wall and in the second base number retired developers trying to recover that baseball inside a pesky cold welcome to another episode of the pesky podcast I'm your host the Rit with me like always and it's good to see him once again the OG George Sullivan and we have a special guest with us once again with the for the Yankee series coming up we got Anthony episode 104 Anthony how's it going man what's up guys welcome back how are we all doing doing well doing well doing good so man Anthony let's talk real quick about the last time though we had in series you know George and I we were you know we were realist we thought we were gonna win one game out of the three and well that wasn't the case you know the Sox stayed hot it took two out of three from the Yankees and you know this it's not the same team as it was you know a couple weeks ago so what do you see from the team that we can take from that series and go into this series well the biggest thing is the pitching the pitching was very good up until you know got to June and stuff and basically it's you know they fallen out of place he wasn't pitched good Rodon has struggled Cole's just getting back you know he's had a good start recently which is great and you know you can't count on nested Cortez and stuff to give you and if we're just banged up in the bullpen same thing too bullpen's been struggling you offense same exact thing I never would have thought I'd say this but losing John Carlos Dan big loss because all it is is just judging Soto on this team no one else can hit and it's very frustrating to watch yeah so let's sit there and dive right into the pitching matchups let's go right to game one's pitching matchup that we have coming up first and it is Tanner howl and I want to say it's Cortez so that's who George and I re but George went and went through the the Rolo decks there and that's who he found that was supposed to be next in line Nester Cortez so and they let's talk about Nester Cortez and you know what he could bring to the game Friday night well personally he hasn't been bad you know he's he's hold his weight as the fifth start he's a perfect fifth starter the only issue I have what Nester Cortez is he has a pitch wall on the road but otherwise he's at home for this game I expect them to do good and I expect the same for Tanner howl and I think it's gonna be a pitching group between both of them yeah George Tanner howl's last outing was possibly his worst outing all season but yes we we expected you can't keep pitching you know you got to have at least one bad outing hopefully that he worked through it got out of it and it's and now we're back the visible Tanner howl yeah look nobody's perfect all the time and he had run a very nice succession of games where he was on his game he was throwing he was throwing decently he's still a young guy and you know that you're gonna cough one up and he had a really bad game unfortunately collided with two others you know in a row on the starting staff of the Pavetta and Baio and you know kind of put us in a bit of a hole but I expect him to come out he's got that you know just bulldog mentality it probably ate at him since the last time he pitched so he's probably gonna come out and you know be super shocked as if he doesn't really need any extra impetus to do well you know he's got the Yankees so you know he's gonna go out there you know fully amped ready to rock yeah and at this time it is at Yankee Stadium so it's a little bit different going into enemy territory there so let's go in and talk about the game to matchup that we have and George went and went through the rotation we should be throwing Josh Winkowski of course they're gonna be throwing Garrett Cole for that episode so let's sit there and Anthony you know Garrett Cole coming back from the IL recently how has he been pitching um he struggled a little bit but his last start he pitched good he gave us five innings believe he did get a win um basically people are saying this is his spring training and stuff he didn't go over 75 pitches when he was in the minors rehabbing and they brought him up against Baltimore so I expect him to go do off a bit and I think you'll see another good matchup between these two on Saturday and should be fun yeah and and George you know you know we call back up Winkowski he he looked great I got I got to say that he looked absolutely amazing down there when he came up the pitch yeah what can we what can we expect from Winkowski what he can throw he can throw on the high 90s he's got good motion as fastball he's he's a very fierce competitor and you know if you don't think he's uh you don't think he's somebody you take seriously you do it your own peril I mean last year he came in in high leverage situations as a reliever they sent him down to Worcester to stretch him out refine what he was working on as a starter and do it you know so that he could just be brought up for this purpose uh I think that it should be a very good pitching matchup uh I'm interested personally if I'm interested to see you know what Cole Scott you know he only went five innings last time you know are they still are they still babying and are they you know they're gonna at some point they're gonna you like take the shackles off and say you know go get a big guy you know you know that's one of the things I'm really worried about is that you know he suddenly finds his groove and then of course you know as you see the the the graphic coming up here about Raphael Devas versus Garrett Cole uh yeah won't you yeah um Anthony you know over the over the career Devas has own Garrett Cole and that and this was a healthy Garrett Cole you know Cole Cole Cole's coming off of you know the IEL now so you know do you expect more of the same or do you think Garrett Cole is gonna go after him a little more now I think he's gonna build off of it you know like why be scared you know you know he kind of owns you and stuff you know you got to take that challenge with a grain of salt and just go after it if he gets you he gets you but you know at the end of the day you got a good job you can't walk them you know walks her you got to just go after him if he gets you he gets you yeah look you know just looking at his career against them baton 306 against Garrett Cole uh with seven home runs 16 RBI's uh you know he he hasn't walked you know against Cole and he struck out 14 times but man that slugging in the OPS is crazy numbers now against a pot you know against the Yankees ace against against any ace you know with numbers like that it is absolutely unheard of yeah how how how kind of people in New York feel about you know this matchup are they worried about it or are they just going at some you know whatever I mean it's it's like it's so weird it's just that you know Cole's such a good picture but against Deborah's uh Deborah's just owns him you know what's the feeling like in in the you know yanking fandom about the about this do they just throw the hands up in the air and go it is what it is or what's good talked about on twitter and I feel like personally right i think Deborah's most of his home runs off of Cole they came in Yankee stadium if i could remember maybe one or two came in Boston i know he's hit a bunch in the Yankee stadium like over his career too yeah so let's uh let's go to game three pitching matchup where we're throwing out their kind of proper and there we go uh Luis Hill so Anthony what can we expect from Luis he hasn't looked good over the last three to four starts it's a little worrisome maybe his arm is getting tired maybe move to the pen that's what I could say about him when he's on he's on over the course of the season earlier no one could touch him like he would strike guys out left and right but now he's walking guys he's you know getting into trouble and the guys are you know hitting the ball and they're just waiting for it you know they're all over it and you know i don't know what to say honestly yeah and we're throwing out uh Sunday night Carter Crawford who absolutely looked a bounce back start last uh last start George yeah yeah he'd add some he'd put it together about three or four starts that would not all that terrific but he looked like he he'd been working on something on the side uh looks more like the the kind of profit we saw earlier in the season uh you know good movement you know spot us fastball well uh seem more focused i think i think that was the thing that struck me the other night because he seemed like he was dialed in a little bit more so yeah um you know cutter Crawford it's going to it's going to be which cutter Crawford shows up is he going to go six innings is he going to sit there and attack these batters because you know the Yankees lineup on paper the the first three for the first four are someone that you don't want to sit there and have to face on no if it's not your not your day but uh let's sit there and you know go right into the lineup there Anthony let's start with the start with the outfield that we have uh for you guys and it is Alex Verdugo Juan Soto and Aaron Judge so uh those three there are in absolute you know great outfield defensively uh that we have so we got judge you know superstar possibly gonna win mvp should win mvp so i don't have another good year which is awesome he's gonna get paid new off season you know who's gonna pay him Verdugo has fell off a good amount you know i mean we can't really throw up anything in left field but you know he's been all right i can't complain he's better than what our left field was last year with Billy McKinney and stuff but you know it's not a bad outfit it's good has he has he behaved himself in a clubhouse? i heard that Boone has told them you can't do certain things and stuff he's you know he's very emotional you know i heard Boone has like tried to like say oh you can't do this can't do that which i don't like you know yeah um but you talk about judge you talk about Soto so let's sit there and talk about their stats so far coming up you know coming in here for the season so far the look at judge and judge's batting 320 Soto's batting 302 you know judge 32 homers Soto 20 homers judge 83 RBI's Soto 61 RBI's you know OPS for judge is 1.155 for Soto it's 1.000 like those there are not only all star caliber numbers those are like you said Anthony MVP numbers so uh you know what can we sit there and what can the Red Sox pitching staff do to try to not you you can't you can't sit there and just stop these guys but limit their the damaging they can cause i mean the Red Sox rotation can have some success against the top of that order and the outfield i mean cutter craw for its pitch good his last start and stuff and i think overall the season you know his stats don't show but like he's pitched well hawks always give the Yankees a hard time because he always pounce the strike zone and stuff i think boston will have success against the struggling Yankees lineup i personally think so george what are you what are you thinking look you can't you can't discount Soto and judge i mean you know any given time the two of them go off and they haven't had a back-to-back the the minute it goes the way they're hitting and the way they're hitting bombs it kind of reminds me of the you know the whole mental maris days in the early sixties you know these guys go off in any moment and you're right so it is going to get paid you know he you know he he picked the perfect time to go absolutely bananas at the plate all season so yeah he's he's going to get paid and then the question is who's writing the check but yeah you know it scares me a little with those guys the rest of the lineup to be honest with you it doesn't really do much for me you can do go king duke can be had we saw that last year right he can be had the rest of the lineup i'm not particularly worried about if you don't put runners on uh in front in front of either Soto or judge and you can't get hurt if they go deep so that's the secret single shots won't won won't kill you multi you know you know three run home as well so if you keep runners off in front of them and you should be okay yeah so when you sit there and just look at your guys's outfield let's take take a look at our outfield uh and it's doing absolutely uh pretty good this year you know we got tyler o'neill and left will your abreya and right and jerry and center this has been the most consistent of our outfield george uh but let's sit there and you know talk about our outfield a little bit uh you know jerry and has moved himself into the all-star discussion uh the votes went there but boy if the baseball people don't put him on the all-star team roster there's something wrong with the process he has turned into one of the premier lead-off hitters in the in the game and and doing it well will your abreya just goes out hits fields and runs in the background and he's he's moving up in the stats of rookies all the time he went out for on the aisle for uh a short period of time because he would kind of trip coming down the steps you know you know one or two games bang he's back where he was before he's been you know he's he's getting a couple hits a night he's been good players in the outfield uh you know then you know for us um you know the big thing is has been o'neill he's suddenly hot again and he's you know he's driving the ball and you know is as long when he does that it just adds to what he brings to you in the outfield we have a very good defensive outfield with that group all right um we are brave it was a fine right fielder and Jordan Duran has improved tremendously in center field and you know you throw o'neill and right and then left rather boy that that group would track down most to anything so yeah they're playing really well uh i'm a big way of abreya fian i think the kid uh i wouldn't be surprised if he seemed to something special in Yankee Stadium if he goes if he goes deep to right field a couple times as to the feeling you know kind of like suddenly like baseball coming out party for him does yeah to look what everybody see what he really has but you know George just to sit there look at you know Jared Duran and let's talk about All-Star and let's talk about stats you know his this guy's crazy this season yeah you know baton 286 21 stolen bases 10 home runs uh 10 triples yeah you know this man is an extra base machine you know his ops is 843 like man it's and he's got 100 hits you know already so yeah he's he wreaks havoc on the base because he makes pitches nervous and he makes catches even more nervous i mean he he will he will run on a catcher he will take the extra base he will try your outfield he will try you know if you're not paying attention he's going to take a base on him and he puts pressure on the defense so yeah uh i would say right now uh he's not only an all-star game worthy he's coming through currently the Red Sox MVP he's played every game and he just goes out there and does it and and he's carried on from where he was last year you know the big question was was that an aberration or not no it's not it was a taking off point of what has been a tremendous season for him so yeah it's been it's been fun to watch yeah absolutely uh now listen there and start talking about the Yankees uh infield right now um let's let's start with first second and shortstop when you know you guys got Ben Rice, Glaibor Torres, and Anthony Volpe, you know out of those three Anthony you know who's who do you want to sit there and talk about i want to talk about Ben Rice um i love that we brought him up for Rizzo i think overall they can learn especially Volpe can learn from Ben Rice because Ben Rice he makes contact like he really does and i think he's going to be a part of the future what's good about Ben Rice is he could play catcher he could play first base he makes solid contact which i like and he's a good-ass left-handed bat and i'm really excited to see what he does the rest of the way i don't think Rizzo's going to come back maybe September but Ben Rice is here to stay yeah um i sit there and i was going to ask you like how was house first base been since Rizzo's been gone and Rice has had had to kind of take over that spot uh defensively i mean defensive wise you know you're getting a little bit of a downgrade because you know Rizzo go glove i mean he hasn't played that good of defense this year but with the bat and stuff it's pretty much been the same maybe even a tiny bit better and stuff because Rizzo went down to do wasn't it for weeks he would just pop out strike out with Ben Rice contact it's all he does and i'm really looking forward to him the rest of the way yeah so let's sit there and go over to our infield uh first second shortstop uh Dominic Smith David Hamilton and Saddam Rapaiella you know usually that this is uh when Hamilton's you know 100 percent healthy this is our uh first second shortstop George so uh who do you want a spotlight this time well that's tough um you know what you and Hamilton Rapaiella i think i'm going to go Rapaiella uh yeah when he he has proven that he is plays as a plus defender at both centerfield and shortstop he's slow his batting average is slowly climbing you know it's in the 240s now he was you know hugging him and doze a line for a long time he he's he does the job defensively no matter whether you put him a short or whether you put him in centerfield with Duran playing so well in centerfield it actually makes us better defensively throughout you know the club with him a shortstop i think he has a a little bit of a chemistry with with Hamilton a second base uh and i think that's fine but you know you know the last night three run bomb right he's got power he's got speed he's learning to use his speed all right Duran knows how to use it he's learning and he got to remember he's a rookie all right he may camp is a rookie his emo has been when he succeeds he succeeds well he'll go to the next level he's you know he'll do an okay job he'll struggle a little bit and all of a sudden boom he took he took off he did other to pull them that one i'm a trip to Worcester did the same thing and Worcester continued through the end of the year he showed his spring training he could play he got off to a slow start now he's starting to hit his stride all right and people around the league are starting to notice you know he's he's a problem you know he can hit for power he you know he's he's been the king of the big hits all right come up there unexpectedly you know and he'll he'll wrap one in the other way and you know then he gets on the base and he can you know you make a double of triple so yeah speed kills and he's got it and he's one of you know he along with Duran and Hamilton you know make up three gazelles that'll run they'll run you silly on the base pass so yeah now let's sit there and talk about the Yankees uh the rest of their infield you know we got DJ LeMay here at third uh Jose Trevino a catcher and then DH uh it's the ottigan off again but JD Davis is has uh has been sharing time there with Aaron Judge so Anthony who do you want to talk about in these three so what a great group to pick out of um let's see we'll go DJ LeMayu all i can say is they gotta give us Walter the third base job i'm sick and tired of seeing them run out DJ LeMayu he's not the same person he once was he's literally coming back off an injury dude's always hurt and he just yeah he like like give you example yesterday he would make contact you think oh the ball is going to leave dies he's got no pop in the bat and defensive wise he's fine though like whenever there's Ryan's or scoring position the dude's either gonna pop out or he's gonna hand into a double play you know i know third base we're thin and stuff we should make a trade at the deadline for a third baseman we really should but you know DJ LeMayu just isn't cutting it it's just hurting this team constantly so i'll say it again for you Anthony like i said last year if you had to trade the line yank yankies should go out and trade i don't know who they would have left honestly go get no one there no one Aaron Otto just go get him so it's a good one but uh george uh listed there and go with the red sucks uh rest of their three we got Rafa Devers we got Condor Wong and we got Masataka Yoshida DH so George who do you want to sit there and talk about these three i'll take Devers uh Devers is he's in he's in full-on i'm going to kill the opposition mode and he's doing it in a number of different ways he's played very good defense this year he's someone embraced the team weir aspect of it he's being more vocal you know uh they talked about on the broadcast yesterday when they talked about Winkowski coming up he goes i don't know how they sent the guy down you know he appreciates what Winkowski brings to the table he's been more vocal he understands he's the highest player player on the team he's developing relationships with some of the younger players you know he saw on the broadcast last night right you know he and ruff he and ruffiella were joking you know you know between pitches all right there's a chemistry building there it kind of got me flashbacks of when him and zander used to sit there exactly and talk and joke around and stuff like that exactly and that was nice to see the other thing is left field is his friend and he has been going the opposite field all year long and and doing it not only just you know just taking the ball and driving into the alley he's been putting home runs out to left field all right so you naturally you think you know in Yankee stadium he's looking at that right field porch no he's not you know he's got a left center field and he you know he's gonna put one of the seats out there uh he's just he's become a very he's become a complete player with all aspects of his game all right he's running better he's fielding better he's you know he's got timely hits home runs driving in runs and the most important thing is he's learning to become a leader and i think that that's helped this team kind of kick start and kind of be more consistent since the Philadelphia series and i think that's important i think he believes in it he wants you know i think he's he's probably going to go to the the front office and say for god's sakes please do something at the trade deadline and you know they they will because they don't have the the king of analysis paralysis sit in the front office anymore but i think he's becoming more complete and more effective player by becoming a leader so he recognizes that i'm a veteran now you know and he's got room you know you look at that lineup you know with you know you're looking at her brand new and right Hamilton and second and Rafael are at shortstop he's got three rookies uh-huh that it doesn't help me carry the team and yet you know he's providing the leadership hey this is how we do it i i couldn't be more pleased you know with the way he's he's you know going about his business this year and he's been bloody dangerous at the plate yeah um but let me sit there and pop something here real quick George about Connor Wong he as of tonight 17 game hitting street yeah absolutely amazing coming from a catcher a catcher you know well you know you know he's been talking about we've been talking about this all year long you know he's not the fidgeting at the plate just up but he's all business as soon as the pitch is ready he's gonna he's gonna take you i'm gonna you know i'm gonna hit a hard line shot to left field or i'm gonna go the other way uh and another one who's who's come up with a big hit you know when it's needed yeah he's he's just become more focused and he's still he's still a decent defensive catcher as well so yeah win win on all sides yeah so let's sit there and talk up uh go next to the Yankees bench you guys we got as well Cabrero we got Austin Wells your backup catcher and uh Jommat Jamaya Jones so uh who do you want to talk about Anthony on this one let's see let's go around as well though i believe this guy should be starting third baseman and so we get somebody to play over there whoever that looks gonna be hopefully i mean you saw literally first year of the season that guy went crazy you know is he an everyday player no but like he should begin more
