Good morning, and welcome to Simply Politics from China. It's Friday, July 19th. On today's show, Ruwan Fuzhong receives treatment and is awarded the highest honor in the hospital. Plus, we'll give you an overview of key events on Day 874. This coverage, and more, up next. I'm David, and you're listening to Simply Politics from China. We start off with news from Vietnam, where the Politburo of the Communist Party has issued a notice on the health condition of General Secretary Nguyen Fuzhong. According to the Vietnam News Agency, the General Secretary has been both directing work and receiving treatment and health care services. Here to discuss this further is Michael, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this situation? Certainly, David. This is the first time the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam has confirmed in the form of a notice that Nguyen Fuzhong is receiving treatment. Despite discussing his health issues publicly on multiple occasions in recent years, this formal announcement is a first. And what does this mean for the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam? The notice also stated that to ensure the overall guidance and regulation of the work of the Central Committee, Politburo, and Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Politburo Member and State President Vovantuong will be responsible for guiding the work in accordance with the responsibilities and authority prescribed by the Politburo. This is to allow Nguyen Fuzhong to prioritize time for intensive active treatment. Nguyen Fuzhong has been a significant figure in Vietnam's politics, hasn't he? Indeed, he is the longest-serving top leader of Vietnam since the country's reform and opening up in 1986. He has served as the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam since 2011. His current term lasts until 2026, making his health a matter of national importance. Thanks for the report, Michael. Shifting our focus to Vietnam, now the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam has issued a notice on the health condition of General Secretary Nguyen Fuzhong. According to the Vietnam News Agency, the General Secretary has been both directing work and receiving treatment and health care services. Here to discuss this further is James, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you tell us more about this situation? Certainly, David. Thanks for the report, James. Shifting our focus to the ongoing conflict in Europe, Day 874 of the Russia-Ukraine War saw a series of significant events from explosions over the Ukrainian capital Kiv to the exchange of prisoners of war. Here to discuss these developments is Bella, a correspondent for Simply Politics from China. Can you give us an overview of the latest developments? Certainly David. In Kiv, air defenses shot down a Russian drone, with the falling debris causing no reported damage. Meanwhile, in the Russian-occupied city of Khirsan, Ukrainian shelling and drone attacks resulted in one death and eight injuries. A Ukrainian drone also struck a bus in Russia's Belgorod region, killing a young couple. What about the prisoner exchange? How significant is this? This is the third prisoner exchange in seven weeks, with a total of 190 captured soldiers being released. Each side released 95 POWs after talks mediated by the United Arab Emirates. This is a significant step, indicating some level of negotiation and cooperation between the two sides. And what measures are being taken to protect civilians, particularly in the Ukrainian city of Kharqiv? Officials in Kharqiv have announced plans to build a network of underground schools to protect children from the almost daily Russian attacks on the city. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has denied the failure of a major ground offensive in Kharqiv. Despite Russian officials stating they would seal off Russian border villages to protect civilians from Ukrainian shelling. What about international support for Ukraine, particularly from the U.S. and Germany? There are concerns that U.S. support for Ukraine could wane if Republican candidate Trump returns to the White House. Meanwhile, Germany plans to have its military aid to Ukraine next year, cutting it from around 8 billion euros in 2024 to around 4 billion euros in 2025. What are the latest developments in politics and diplomacy? The European Parliament condemned Hungarian Prime Minister Orban's meeting with Russian President Putin in Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated Russia is ready to work with any U.S. leader willing to engage in an equal, mutually respectful dialogue. NATO appointed British official Patrick Turner as its senior representative to Ukraine. Estonia and Lithuania announced they will no longer allow Khars registered in Belarus to enter through their checkpoints bordering Russia or Belarus, citing EU sanctions on Belarus. Thanks for the report from China, Bella.
