We begin the show by discussing the results from Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley, a great show with some big star-making performances.  There was a ton of talk that night about UFC/Strikeforce title unification matches, so we give our thoughts on that as well. Then we get into a huge week of news, including a potential Dan Henderson vs. Fedor fight, declining Ultimate Fighter ratings, BJ Penn's injury, more Chael Sonnen ridiculousness, and a ton of other topics.Check out our website at http://www.thehammermma.com and subscribe to our show in the Itunes store.

[music] Hello and welcome to the Hammer! It is April 13th and you're listening to us live at 93.3 CFMU. I am your host Dave. Join us always by my co-host. Greg, how's it going guys? And Steve. Hey. And you're listening to us at 93.3 but you can also find us at thehammermma.com and addictedmma.com. So thank you for tuning in and we're going to talk a little bit about Strike Force and we've also got quite a bit of news that we want to chat about including one topic near and dear to my heart which will involve some ranting and some rage. Let's begin with a rage near and dear to your heart just itself. Rage near and dear to my heart but like certain people in MMA managed to bring it out more than more than most so they all had something to say this week so here we go. But let's start with something that actually did not fill me with rage. Strike Force had quite a moment of glory this Saturday. This card was fantastic. All due credit. Phenomenal. Nick Diaz defended his welterweight championship out against Paul Bailey. People were afraid that he would come out and try to like match Paul Bailey and striking and get caught. They were thinking that well I even thought they were almost right. Yeah, I thought you personally thought he had would have to take it to the ground against David's power. I saw last week that Nick Diaz might just be dumb enough to stay in the trade with them and he was and it was great and it was phenomenal and the other thing is. Daily dropped him twice. Didn't matter. The chain was good enough to make it through both knockdowns and his striking game has picked up so phenomenally well and gotten so good that he blew daily out. Daily didn't look like he knew how to handle the busy offensive Diaz. Diaz mocked him for the first minute and then just unloaded on him and wailed on him for next four. Well basically it was a matter of Diaz taking daily's best shots and Diaz feeding body shots to daily was tired him out for one thing. Daily was doing a lot of swinging which again also tired him out. He couldn't keep up with the pace. He couldn't keep up with the pace exactly. Diaz was in far better shape, far better cardio and he didn't even really need to take it to the ground. There was a brief ground exchange but I mean it was. Daily actually went for the take down because he could hang on his feet. So got to give prayer for Diaz. I mean this guy you know as much as the guy can be being Nimrod in interviews. This guy loves to find out what his opponent is good at and then attack them at their own game. There's another guy who does that pretty well. So who's also a welterweight champion? Yep. But I'm actually really impressed with Diaz is that he fought KJ Nunes and then cyborg Santos and then Paul Daily. Three tough tough dudes and just can take every shot that they get. He might be the toughest guy in MMA right now. Pelfer them. Because his chin is absolutely rock phenomenal and not softened at all by anything you guys weathering. I mean you know that he got up after two right two right haymakers from daily. I mean after this fight he got all the ring all the guys from Cesar Gracie came in. They were all been a very very good spirits tonight out of that night as you would expect. Diaz called and said you know want to put me with GSP I love to fight them. So I don't think I think it's a little premature I think that Strike Force is writing some checks that they can't cash but definitely you know I would love to see Diaz taking on someone or see what how he does in the U of C division I think he'll do quite well. Well that was one of the running themes for this whole night is the commentators non-stop during the Strike Force show we're talking about unification bouts and they put up text message polls. Do you want to see UFC and Strike Force champions merge 96% of the Strike Force audience wanted to. Exactly see the thing is there's always a statistical margin of error it's got poker and three other guys. To me I think that the 4% would probably be Dana White and the Furtita brothers you know because. Oh yeah okay. I can see that. Like shows. Yeah we've got 24 we've got till 2014 we've got the TV contracts to honor and you know that a big thing for the UFC was they want that Strike Force CBS. Yeah that contract. Yeah so they've still got a lot of stuff left to do in Strike Force they don't want to do this. Well how are you going to do it a bit too soon and you can't so if you can't go to Strike Force how are you going to run a company with no belts who's going to watch a show or buy a paper book. Exactly. You know. They're fighting for pride. Like it worked once but. Diaz well according to Diaz's interviews he doesn't care about the belt anyways. Yeah well that's that's a whole different story but I mean definitely too premature you have to figure if they were going to do Diaz and GSP just he's still got to beat shields. He's still got this hypothetical match with Anderson Silva who's still got to be the economy. Well you can say this about any division. Yeah exactly. That's the thing. That's the thing. There's nine contenders in the lightweight. Well exactly. So I mean. I think that might be an understatement. There's more guys who have a legitimate claim to a lightweight title shot in the UFC then there are lightweights in Strike Force. Yeah I know. That's true. Diaz and Melendez I mean it's too soon to talk about unification belts. Is it too soon to talk about Melendez? I think so. Because Melendez was awesome. Yeah he really was. So we go forward from Diaz to Melendez. Melendez took on Tatsuya Kawajiri. Melendez just bombed him. This wasn't going to contest. His boxing and counter-striking was just picked up to such a degree. He was literally ducking everything Katsuya threw and then just kind of back with right hooks. Dropped Kawajiri multiple times. Finally Kawajiri went on to his back. Melendez jumped on top of him and just elbowed him to death. Well their last fight was a tough decision when Melendez and Melendez just massacred him. And he used elbows. I'm loving the new legal ground elbows. I'm enjoying that in Strike Force yeah. Sometimes they're good and sometimes they're bad. This is an example that I'm done right. You know this is an example of a guy who wasn't trying to throw short elbows to stall for time or to prevent the stand up. This is a guy who postured up and just dropped him on him. Crazy speed and this is one of the like the one-sided ass-kicking that were just super fun to watch. And it wasn't even that it was like it was really one-sided but it was one-sided not because Kawajiri is so unskilled but because Melendez is so skilled. Was that good? Well he's so far above. I mean yeah the lightweight division has like six guys but he's so far ahead in shoulders about anybody else in Strike Force lightweight. I mean and he's a guy God it's such a you know what I know it's a long time before this unification match stuff is going to happen to you imagine him versus Edgar. Well don't tell that to Melendez and his post fight interview he's like I want the UFC belt now. Yes. Well absolutely. Me want now. He came out the you know he was he called out he said he wanted to be in the UFC division and again the thing is he's still got KJ News and Josh Thompson floating around his division. Yeah but these are both guys who lost their last couple fights like yeah there is no one in that division. Well ultimately yeah they're not floating very high. They're close to the bottom of you but they're certainly you know certainly they're guys for him to fight and ultimately Frank Yeager still has Gray Maynard the winner of Paddis and quite possibly J.R. and J. Miller yeah yeah for sure it's not going to happen for a long time. Dennis Seaver is still there. Yeah. You know like there's five or six guys that are better in the in the leo of sea lightweight division that are going to be ahead of Gilber Melendez dude take the year and some money beat up KJ News a couple of times. But with that being said I will say this the crowd reacted phenomenally to Melendez and to Diaz like huge huge stars ovations cheering chanting their names they boo Jake Shields which was awesome but that's what you get when you take our GSP when you're also when you're the bar by far and away least excited member in the camp because that camp is full of really exciting fighters and it's exciting to like Nick's brother is is he's not quite as as tough and skilled as Nick but I mean I love watching Nate Diaz fight because he's lethal on the ground he's just insane he pulls submissions out of nowhere we get to watch him live in two weeks I know it's gonna be great I can't wait but I hope he loses though he's basically Canadian. Alright so what else is all the card so then we went forward to a controversial fight between Gagard Mesasi and Keith Jardine this one we're going to talk about controversial if you're not I thought it was fair enough um Gagard Mesasi out struck Jardine all throughout the fight like leaps and bounds ahead of him on his feet surprise by the end of the first fight Jardine or by the end of the first round Jardine was bleeding from both eyes his nose and his mouth by the second round it was getting to the point where it was almost ridiculous my third round he was just dripping blood Mesasi was dripping Jardine's blood however Jardine came up with four takedowns in the first round two in the second round and one of the takedowns when he was kind of posturing up Mesasi went for an upkeep kick kick and it wasn't legal so it was a point deduction now this isn't the first round which is by far the closest of the round because Jardine had the four takedowns so it wasn't close and striking at all but Jardine didn't come up with the four takedowns so if you give the first round a ten nine for Jardine it becomes a ten eight mm-hmm and then moves to the Mesasi handily one handily one the other two but not enough to get a ten eight in either round so it ends up being a majority draw now unless you give Mesasi to the first round I don't know if you noticed this day but one of the judges switched the rounds they gave round two to Jardine and round one yeah to Mesasi which is just retarded and we know see so people's wasn't judging because he's rapping so so I don't know why I don't know what to think see see the people's breath and land his fights but no see that here's the foolishness in the first round Mesasi hit the guy with 20 power strikes someone pulled the ripboard to the head in the second round he hit the guy with 25 power strikes to the head he picked up strikes in the round where he didn't got he didn't he didn't he didn't more now if you want to make to it to me the argument every single drag takedown that Jardine got because these are drag takedowns these aren't power slam these aren't double legs these aren't right through them you know I have to give credit to him to how hard he worked for those takedowns yeah yeah these are long slow takedowns this is a chill son of leg through a guy that he did he did nothing with when he got to do yeah he elated two strikes in the ground he never got down the position he never managed to pass guard so but now here's where I find this to be the issue though a lot of people are saying this is a huge robbery she's driving the commentators were going off the hook with how much of a robbery this was that first round I mean obviously Masashi fought better but with the takedowns with the point deduction well this is a legitimate draw I would say that I don't have a problem with that but here's my thing if you're going to say to me four takedowns versus 20 strikes the takedowns win so the takedowns are basically worth five strikes five power punches from Masashi to the head okay I'm willing to hear that argument but for the second judge who said in the second round when Jardin got two takedowns that's against 25 strikes you're going to tell me 12 13 punches to the face is equivalent of one takedown yeah well then you just don't know anything about fighting are you going to tell me if Anderson Silver punches a guy 13 times in the face but then his canvas his back touches the canvas once the other guy won the round well they've got to be honest in the last month we saw Nick Ring and Fukada fight and with just as bad stuff like yeah no because Fukada tuck the guy down Fukada was doing the takedowns there I'm just saying that bad like bad judging is going to happen yeah and the fact that that first round like the string it sucks because we're all Masashi fans I wasn't enraged when I saw it because the thing is Masashi did throw the illegal up kick and I told you at the time you can't be arranged during the show you even said I can see this being a draw yeah well like the second he threw the up kick I was like this is going to be a draw unless he unless he finishes because they're going to say this rounds a 10-8 off Jardin having the four takedowns and off the fact that generally speaking if you if you if you get docked a point the judge cows at a 10-9 even if you're handling wing the round but with that being said I was so like the fact that Masashi walked out he didn't even have a scratch on his face Jardin walked out looking like he got hit by a Mack truck and then the truck backed up on him you know good come on who won the fight but I mean the damage thing is something that you got to tread carefully with yeah but when you get hit with 80 power punches you land six power punches what are you gonna tell me but that's the scoring system you six power punches six takedowns it's a it's a 10-point must scoring system right my issue isn't with that my issue is with the strike force commentators going out there and being like this is the hugest robbery around and stuff you can't cry wolf like that you have to say no yeah definitely it's like in the the commentators they were making it sound like there they couldn't even fathom they couldn't mathematically figure out how this was a draw they're like this is insane yeah well no like I'm not saying that the commentator commentary wasn't bad the commentary was definitely bad it was bad all night more when all was a fool but with that being said in our opinion like when when when D.S. or when Linda's was crushing college year any yelled baby needs a new pair of shoes was that mean it was more than your baby are you dating him out it's terrible what are you but with that being said you know you have to say I definitely have to have to question a system where 10 power punches to the head is equal to one takedown that is not that doesn't make sense that's not the MMA map but that's the thing that's not a system but it is the system no the judges it's a judges opinion any the judge could have easily given it the other way that's not the system this is I mean this isn't the worst decision I've seen in MMA it's probably not even the worst decision I've seen in the last year it was not but I mean it's definitely it was definitely a highlighted one of the silly but to say that five the five takedowns equals like 10 of these points are real like that that's not like it's not math like that that's not how it worked it was one judges a pitch or a couple judges opinions on this it's not how the scoring system works it's how they used it well I agreed but I still have to say be aware of the stats of all that you know I'm not gonna I'm not gonna pull the you know the the marwan all and start calling out the copy strike in the middle of each round like I'm not foolish but with that being said you know massage again by the end of the first round jardine was bleeding from both eyes his mouth his nose and he was retreating the entire round and diving for slow takedowns this did not look like a guy who was winning around even with the illegal up kick so now he's the one yeah that's yeah that's a mistake it's a mistake it's a judges mistake I mean obviously massage he's not gonna be I know I believe him wanted to consider the draw but like jardine and his kid Greg Jackson camp has come out and said that they think he won both the first and second round off the takedowns well if you think he won both from round fighter though then you don't think strikes counter no they're promoting their fighter you know they're coming straight out the presses the camp they know the camp is always gonna back their fighter if you're not backing your fighter you're not a good camp like I mean jardine could have you know gone unconscious and been knocked out and Jackson would still be back and I'm saying well he looked good until he got knocked out you know like it's this job yeah all right so what was that he's a master of politics yeah well she now yokey took on a little bear bomb this one was actually really really interesting to me bear bomb came up really really fast and tried to push iokey up against the cage which he would figure would be the strategy that he would he would have to take didn't work out for him he kind of tripped and fell down and then iokey just jumped on his back which is where you do not want iokey to be that minute 33 seconds i hope he gets the next day crying and bear bomb tops he surprised with that long he said a couple of very high profile losses lately iokey needed this bad yeah for sure so yeah so that card was pretty good the ratings were about 25 percent higher than the Henderson versus Fadjow card as we said last week we figured D as the bigger ratings oh yeah then the monster money making the machine this is i'm willing to i'm willing to put him up against Fadjow with regards to rating just quite a bit more than either of those cards but that was a that was a heavyweight tournament that you are correct the thing is but also Fadjow is is a legitimate legend now thing with D as is D as in the land is both and they're both draws and i'll tell you why they're fighting in california where they fought before multiple times they're both from california and they've won fights in front of this crowd multiple multiple times they don't look like geeks yeah you know it's not like masasi who's the last time they saw him was two years ago two years ago when they saw the guy he was hugely popular we lost a game all yeah one year ago and he hasn't even seen him since you know christine cyborg santos they can't find anyone to fight her so i mean you also over oh no sorry oh cyborg yeah i don't know when she's fighting if yeah um yeah christine cyborg santos we have no idea when she's fighting and i'll show over him after he won the heavyweight title he disappeared to japan to fight over there came back of course the guy's not getting into huge ovation because he's not a local guy and no one's seen no one's seen the guy fight yeah you know if you want to get over you have to fight in front of a crowd like three or four times a year so that's why dia's and melendez are getting huge ovation because they're beating people every three or four and having exciting fights too yeah they're having exciting fights with you know and dia gives a great interview like i like i like i give them bad interview both i do that interview which is sometimes better than a good good interview but melendez loves to get in front of a camera too both of them can talk so they're both exciting fighters who can talk and they're fighting they're not vanishing off for months at a time with contractual disputes over the last couple years they become two of my favorite fighters just all around you can tell they just like to fight they love competing they love the sport dia's doesn't care about the belt you know you know what else is gonna care about the belt is fador because they are trying to put together a fight between fador and den Henderson in july non-diculous and this is something we got to talk to and what which is an untitled heavyweight handerson yeah really now pandas are all dropped oh yeah so now the initial was never coming in this career yeah it's true the initial thought was that well maybe fador is going to finally make them move down the light heavyweight and challenge for the title nope they're gonna they're gonna say like oh well maybe we'll do it catch rate at 220 fador doesn't want to do that so hendo's like okay well i'll drink a lot of water and i'll go up and fight him full heavyweight so now you've got your champion not defending his belt for like a weird fight that is is interesting sort of but that's a freak fight right there why bother it's a freak fight if if hendo if hendo wasn't the champion awesome i have no problem with it but he's a champion here's my thing first of all you've got champion not defending his belt which is just it automatically stupid because he just won the belt so he should defend it at least once before if he starts taking freak fights out of his division second of all if we do this fight fador is either going to win or is going to lose or is going to be a drop if it's a drop why did you do it if he wins the fight he just beat 40-year-old dan henderson who's two weight classes small then he was just fighting in middleweight and just came up to light heavyweight and is now coming up to heavyweight fador won't even cut the way to go down and fight the guy on even terms he's making the guy come up which means fador is now worthless because he's just got beat by a 40-year-old man who's he's you know before fador was getting beaten by guys like 50 pounds heavier now he's getting beaten by a guy 20 pounds lighter than him yeah i know the weight class shouldn't buy that much but this fight if he's dropping on for a light heavyweight title fight i find that very interesting henderson going up does nothing well he's going up to weight classes really i mean yes he's a light heavyweight champion but he's starting he's in middleweight yeah well he's talking about drinking water to go to 206 you know like he's he's not sure if he can make it to 220 then like okay so you know fador loses fador is not worthless if fador wins what does that mean that means you've just was dan henderson is your light heavyweight champion look like a loser yeah your light heavyweight chain looks like a loser if he looks old and done and how does that get fador back into the heavyweight division was it you beat a light heavyweight champion and now you're ready to go take on all stroke and it's a shame because hendo's not old and done he's case 40 fine but he can still go like the the guy's not a has been he's not over the hill but putting him against an obvious mismatch it just it just it devalues your title well actually this isn't even strike force running things anymore i mean we're talking as a strike forces its own organization they were talking about both of us before and they're booking it now but you know the fact that fador is like the only guys want to fight is henderson well if you if the only guy you want to fight is henderson then you know what give up give up drinking you know vodka and beer for a couple months go down to 205 fight the guy for his belt i agree you know take on over insane proof after that take on phagia out yeah or if you don't want to know if you don't want to go down the weight well then find a heavy what you want to fight take on gregs take on someone like that but like you know like why is the point of doing this fight catch weight you're going to either make fador look like an idiot or you're going to make henderson look like an idiot you're not going to make either one of them look like a draw what is the point are you going to try to get either one of them to be able to make you money on pay-per-view how does this help foolishness so every week about an hour after we get off the air bj pen news comes up a little week late reporting about it did we get some early this week yes well two well two weeks ago bj pen and john fitch was announced we got to talk about it six days later 23 hours late and then last week it was john fitch has injured so they knew a point for bj pen well now about two hours after we got off the air last week bj pen's injured whole things off so that fight for july's done yeah so what kind of bj pen news are we going to see tonight yeah i'm assuming he's probably like gone on burgers and i was thinking he might sign with belator as a counterweight in the women's division gsp versus jake shield prime time one of those three-part specials starts tonight half an hour each week for three weeks building up to ufc 129 could be cool uh dan wait said that if you haven't uh if you haven't seen the last seven times we've done this for gsp maybe you'll learn something new this time yeah he can't be interested yeah really i mean you can only you can only show shark cartilage so many times in somewhat related news uh we should be discussing the new gsp biography called fighter next week uh we've got a copy of the book and we're we should actually fight for the ghost what we should have the author on the show as well yeah so if anybody has any questions for the playing clips of the interview so definitely mail it into us yeah i go to go when you go to our website the hammer mma.com uh give us an email there's an email link on there if you've got any questions for the author very very interesting biography of gsp a really good look at his career and one more thing we want to talk about before we're we're done oh we got lots of stuff really nice yeah more than that yeah um you know i could tell that gsp isn't going in middle wait to face Anderson Silva because he said that he's not going to middle wait he's still like all the time he's still been dodging the question it's because uh dana stopped denying that okami is uh getting the title shot this summer wow so it looks like ufc rio of course and uh yeah so due to his 2006 mortgage fraud charge chill son in has now been sentenced to 24 months probation a ten thousand dollar fine and he lost his real estate license keith geyser the head of what is shame really uh he died the rest the head of the uh Nevada state athletic commission has said that he's not going to approve him he will not be coaching the ultimate fighter what i think is more funny is chug well this finally came clean about the non-human urine so the chug was so not so and they suspended him for a full year which test tells you honesty does not pay no next time lie tell them that you well he tried to lie and he wasn't good enough that yeah like next time don't come don't come with non-human urine come and say like you know i never went i never went through puberty and that's why i was taking you yeah my doctor prescribed it come up with something like that then you get six months i think ufc fighters eat coaches and better lying ability or acting classes or something uh tough enough is dying this season if you guys the uh very very bad ratings the last two weeks the viewership's dropped on the second week uh this Brock Lesnar versus junior does anthos show is probably doing the worst end of any season so far you know but the ratings for the first episode were bad too you wouldn't know that the fight sucked oh okay yeah well the fights do indeed suck that's very important thing this fight's been terrible very very boring and with that being said this is Lesnar versus this is the santos and this is supposed to be the big thing because their spike contract is up for renewal so we want to put on our two of our biggest stars say hey spike give us a good contract instead Brock and the santos are tanking and what have you got you've got Brock who's an anti-social doesn't want to talk and the santos who can't speak english too well these are not to coaches they're both likeable guys they're both likeable but there's no issue there and likeable guys don't really particularly sell they just had those being all affable and stuff isn't really getting a job if this was son in versus bizping oh my god you know gsp versus cot gsp versus cot like don't get me wrong tough has been on for a long time it's all this old assault no one knows doubt in that but gsp versus cot check that as that season did fine because you had a likeable guy and you had a jerk yeah yep you know and Brock's not the jerk everyone he makes him out to be the same with Hendo and bizbing you had you know like a bull guy and a jerk yep and now if you had had sauna and bizbing you would have a jerk and a bigger jerk so this would have been in every jerk battle you know so does this mean that leather is done as a draw or do you think you'll do just fine on paper do you enjoy well the things i have serious questions now with lezner i think that the thing with the thing with the ultimate fighter ratings is the the hardcore fan is still tuning in yep the casual fan is not and lezner is supposed to be the big draw to the casual fan so that means that either the casual fan does not want to see him in the venue of weekly tv shows where he's asking guys about you know is your family important to you or his his mystique got really really damaged and two back-to-back fights where you got club now this is where i did dispute that i've heard a lot of things about that but it's been proven in ufc that that your wins and losses don't matter towards your drawing power check it out to the hardcore fans but to the casual fans think it's the only hardcore fans 600,000 of the buying chocolate del fights no it doesn't matter no way it's like if you're if you have a if you have a name people are going to want to see you fight people don't want to see brock lezner talk now people still pay 500,000 people watch it all fight for us yeah and people want to see brock lezner being you know a huge monster and mowing guys in the cage they don't want to see him like you know training welter waves and yeah that's true yeah that's true yeah that's true they're gonna make they're gonna turn chickens to chicken salad you know like this this is not though this is not the right venue for the guy and then like desantos is not contributing because desantos is just so likable that no one wants to see the guy get mauled by brock you know if it was mere maybe you'd have something because everyone wants to see mere get a smash by brock again but you know but even that no one really wants to see i just i think that this this seriously puts me into question whether brock is a big draw and realistically looks like she gone with favor and cruise because that way if at least of the season tank you could say hey you know what it was favor and crew who's no one knew them to ever worry about that i'm sorry about that spike yeah now you've gotten your two best guys in the heavy way it's kind of it's a waste i mean it's and honestly i don't think that them tanking ratings on tough applies any in any way shape or form to them tanking on the pay-per-view because segano versus brock people are going to want to see the absolute but you know what that contract for spike is very very important they're not going to lose a lot of you know brende it's not good for ratings news but i don't think it means the product that he has because check has bought them ample renewal contracts and uh just one weird bit of news before we get off the air here we're almost at a time apparently allister over in his family tree connects into king way of the third who ruled the netherlands for like half a century so prince william alexander invited him like for a visit in dinner because they're like family now good for allister i don't want to say about that prince ring prince rien now you know how he got so powerful so you know he's he's inspired by you know divine right of fighters by dutch royalty dutch royalty well then allister spirit of william of orange yeah that's that's what we got yeah so thank you very much for tuning in listening to us at 93.3 c fm u and as always you can also find us at the hammer mma.com please remember to go check that website this week and give us some questions you want us to ask for our interview with the author of fighter the gsp biography next week you can also find us on addicted mma.com live at breed
