It's a pretty good week for non-UFC MMA.  First we review last week's WEC 51:  Aldo vs. Gamburyan, a card that was full of action.  Then we preview the upcoming Strikeforce: San Jose show headlined by Nick Diaz vs. KJ Noons.

There's also a ton of news including the signed Bader vs. Jones fight, some Chael Sonnen stuff, various injuries, and Dana White's thoughts on UFC overexposure.

(upbeat music) Good evening, everybody. Welcome to the Hammer. Usually, you'd be hearing Dave at this point, but he's not here, so he's nursing a migraine. So this is Greg, I'll be your host, and joined by my friends. Steve, hey. All right, so, it's a good day for me because I get to run through one of my favorite things, the WEC card from WEC51. You actually, unfortunately, didn't get to preview this last week, which you love to do. No, I didn't. I was bogged down with way too much work, so I couldn't make the show and it really bothered me, but happily I get to recap it, so let's jump right into it. We got Bantam Weight Boat, Demetrius Johnson, Defeats Nick Pace by unanimous decision. Then we got another Bantam Weight Boat, Antonio Bonuelos beat Chad George by a unanimous decision as well. Go on to the Featherweight, Tyler Toner, loss to Diego Nunez via unanimous decision. And then, what I'd like to talk about for a little bit is the Canadian Chris Horodetschi, who defeated Ed 9mm Radcliffe via split decision, so this is a pretty close fight. I think perhaps Radcliffe's groin was still sore from that Donald Saroni fight way back. But it's good to see Horodetschi pick up a win. I always love seeing a Canadian guy win, so. - How strange is it? - Four fights in a row in the WEC that go to decision. - Yeah, I know, that's an odd thing that really is, but even the decision fights are amazing. Garcia Jung was a decision fight, right? - And that was one of the fights of the year. - And there's, we'll talk about the Garcia fight in a minute on this card was also a fantastic fight that went to decision. - But rumor, like from what I've heard, obviously these four fights didn't air, but apparently it was rather dull for prelims on the WEC card, which makes it still good. - Still better than most fights shows. - It's still better than most fights shows. - You're not gonna let, you're not gonna let me, I'm not criticizing WEC, I don't think I ever will. I'm biased that way. Anyway, so then we move on to a guy I really like who has had a bad streak recently, Mike Brown, who got off the snide beat Cole Provence via TKO, 118 of the first round. - I needed win in a depressing one. - Oh, desperately needed, desperately needed win. It's good to see Brown finish where he goes from here. We'll see, obviously he'll be, the fact that he's on a prelim card, I mean, hopefully he gets back to the main card after this win. - Unfortunately, he's gonna be out of action for a little while. He entered his hand during the fight. They're talking about a solid six months. - That's a shame. - Which is too bad, 'cause really, I mean, a one minute win, and then, you know, if he grabs the other one, he'd give you back in that title contention in no time with those wins. - Oh yeah, oh yeah, for sure. I mean, basically it's Aldo and company in that division. So, I mean, if he were to figure out how to beat Jose Aldo, I mean, that's, these are said and done, as we'll see in a minute, but anyway, so hopefully Mike Brown can get back from injury as quick as possible and keep his win streak going, his win streak of one. Anyway, so, finally we got a lightweight division. We got the Zhang T. Quan versus Pablo Garza. - Now this is a big deal because this is the first fighter from China. - China, that's right. In his U.S.C. or the W.C. And this aired later on during the show. - Yeah, this was a pretty impressive fight. It was a submission guillotine choke, 226 of the first round. And yeah, I enjoyed this fight. I thought it was, it was well done. - He looked good. - He looked at Talented Guy Quan, so the quality score of him. That's the sort of thing that they need. He's the kind of guy that they can market in China. - Oh, definitely, yeah. And it's such a huge population. I mean, they're trying to break the Asian wall down and get more U.S.C. in there and well not U.S.C. but mixed martial arts in there. And this is a good way to do it. The more great Chinese athletes you have, the more the crowd can relate to. - Look what this like basketball, you know. - Oh yeah, it was a baseball. - Or baseball. Look at the Japanese market when each row came in. It just boomed. Anyway, so let's go on to the main card. Featherweight bout Leonard Garcia of the fight of the year candidate took on Mark Hominick, another Canadian guy. And Mark Hominick is just an incredible striker. It's just a surgeon with his hands and he defeated Garcia via split decision. I didn't think it was a split decision. I don't think it was worth that. I think it was unanimous decision. I think Hominick took him apart, but it was still a really exciting fight. - I agree. It was definitely Hominick's fight. He looked really good. Garcia is just a punching bag. - Yeah, he is really. He just takes and takes and takes. I mean, he got dropped a couple of times, but Hominick had control of the whole fight. He really did. I mean, there were a couple of points where Garcia, you know, threw some haymakers and caught him, but Hominick had control of that fight. It shouldn't have been a split decision. Anyway, so moving right along, we go to the other guy in the fight of the year candidate, the Korean zombie Chang-sung Jung against George Rup. Now, I thought Jung was gonna do a lot better in this fight than he did. - Even Rup just destroyed him with a Gonzaga-style head kick. Excuse me, with a KO 130 of the second round. - Yeah, I'm sure it's been said in other forums, but that's pretty much how you kill a zombie, right? - You smash him in the head. - Yeah, you smash him in the head with your foot. That was incredible. And it was happened so quick. I was actually going to go get something to eat and I came back and Jung was out. - I wonder if our co-host Dave's head feels nearly as bad as-- - Oh, I don't know. I don't know if any head can feel as bad as his head felt after that. I mean, his head smashed right off the ground. Surprise, he's still alive. - That was definitely a definite highlight real kick for Rup. - Very impressive. - I wasn't really a huge fan of Rup when he was on the Ultimate Fighter. - No, he didn't really make too much headway. He wasn't really that impressive on there. - But this was a cool win. - Yeah, it was a cool win. So hopefully he can build on this. And it's good to see as many contenders as possible in the featherweight division because, I mean, you gotta line up a bunch of guys for Aldo to face. - Did you see how many dudes that were in the crowd wearing Korean zombie t-shirts? - Oh, yeah, one guy had a head. - Like a fake zombie head? - Yeah. - It's too bad he didn't win. 'Cause you can really market this dude. - Well, even if you lose a bunch, I mean, look at Guido. - Oh, yeah, true. - You can still be marketable. As long as you put on exciting fights. So we got Bantamweight. We got Miguel Angel Torres against Charlie Valencia. Torres won this one. Submission, rear naked choke. Impressive performance by Torres. - Torres needed to win to stay relevant. And he looked really good. - There were awesome flurries in there. He looked really awesome. Is he gonna be at the level to ever take out dominant crews? I don't think so, but he looked good. And we'll see where he goes from here. Then we move on to a really heated battle. These two guys do not like each other. Jamie Varner and Donald Soroni. - The trash shop leading up to this fight was pretty epic. - It was something else. And it was, Soroni had that title shot before against Varner where he got de-cued for the knee to the head. So these guys definitely don't like each other and it showed. - You could feel the hate between these guys. They wouldn't touch gloves at all at the start. I mean, not that that's super uncommon, but just a look of disgust on their faces. - This is a real grunge match. - Yeah, for sure. So anyway, it was a pretty awesome fight. Soroni really had control of this fight. - He won almost every second of that fight either. - Yeah, he did, he dropped Varner. He used his reach very effectively. He's really gotten, like Varner is a great striker, but and Soroni's just improved his game leaps and bounds. Even in the post-fight interview, Varner was saying, "Well, I can't believe how much better Soroni's gotten on with his hands and his striking." - Maybe that was my thing. I expected more from Varner. Maybe I just didn't expect Soroni to improve so much over his last few appearances. - He really improved. He used his reach so, so incredibly, it was awesome. And then after the fight, Soroni called out Varner 'cause this was done in Colorado, where Soroni's from. And Soroni wanted to do a fight in Arizona where Varner's from to do the rematch. And I can't see anything wrong with that. - Well, now they're one-one. So he wants to definitively win the series. - Yeah, he won. - He wants to win the series. - You know what, that's a fight I would watch again. Now, the next time they fight in Varner's hometown is December. I don't see that happening so soon. - I don't know, I mean, two months. That's a big, big-- - Varner got beat up a lot. I wouldn't expect him to be healthy enough to go in December. - Honestly, if Varner can recover from that shallower's fight-- - Okay, yeah. - Where he broke all of his limbs. I'm thinking it may have to be the next time they go to-- - Yeah, probably, probably. But you know, you never know. I mean, these two guys are such fiery guys that I wouldn't put a pass to try and do it for December. So I'd be happy to see it. - But we'll see. - Yeah, I don't know. Anyway, anytime it happens, I'd love to see it. Then we go to the main event, the Featherweight Championship bout between Jose Aldo and Manny Gambirian. Now, I gotta say, I don't think anyone, including myself, gave Gambirian a ghost of a chance in this fight. - The odds in Aldo's favor were pretty astronomical, depending on odds, and no one expected Gambirian to win. I don't even know if anybody expected him to look great in the fight compared to Aldo. - Aldo's just a golden boy right now. - He's, after what he did to Brown, and after his complete decimation, if you write a favor, it was just, it was pretty much academic, and Aldo did take out Gambirian. In the first round, it was kind of a feeling out process, where Aldo was sort of getting an idea of his moves and his style, and saying, okay, how exactly am I going to be Gambirian? Let's see. And then the second round, he just came out. It's like, he's just-- - He spent the first round putting all the pieces together, and then the second round, he just pulled the trigger. - Yeah, but that shows a smart fighter. He's not going to get ahead of himself. He doesn't take anybody for granted. He knows he still has to do his homework, no matter who he's fighting, and that makes him even more dangerous. - And he was just, Aldo was so fast, knocked him down, just ground a pound, spun around, got his back, like he is just up. - Yeah, he can do it all. - He's incredible. I mean, when you look at the pound-for-pound fighters list, I mean, you got GSP, you got Silva. Aldo is as good, or maybe even better than those two guys. - If he's in that top three covers, he's so dominant in that division, it's unbelievable. I'd like to see who they give him next. - I have no idea who you give him next. Yeah, it's kind of up in the air. - Who's left? - Grispy, there's been the talk, and he's got to fight in November. He may not win that, and I don't know. I mean, you look at the rest of this, the Hominick could be a possibility, but that might be a little lower on the car, but Hominick's just coming off a decent win, so-- - What I could say, this might be a little selfish, because we're from Ontario, but I would like to see Hominick grab another win, and then him fight for the title in Ontario. - Oh yeah, that'd be fantastic, I'd go with that for sure. It'd be great, I mean, he's not going to beat Aldo, but we should start that rumor going, so that WC is like, oh, I guess we should do it. - Yeah, well, hopefully they listen to our show. Anyway, so we got the bonuses. Might as well go through the bonuses. On a WEC card, everybody deserves a bonus, but 10 grand to Saroni and Varner, Fight of the Night. - It was surprising. - Even though it was fairly one-sided, God was just the best fight on the car. - It was a great fight. Not kind of the night, George Rupp at the headkick, and Sabisha the Knight, Miguel Torres, with the rear naked. It kind of sucks that Hominick and Garcia didn't get anything for the performance that they put on, but there can only be one Fight of the Night, there's only so much money to throw around. - Yeah, especially in WC, 'cause for some reason, nobody is buying the pay-per-views and-- - Actually, the pay-per-- - The WC pay-per-views did fairly well. The ratings have been very bad traditionally, like the last year or so, like in like two or 300,000 people watching what is usually the best card of the month, including UFC, what I liked about this is the ratings just came in for WC51 and had a 51% increase in ratings from the last show. - Oh, good. - Which was good, which was good. And one of the higher non-Uriya favorite shows they've ever done. - That's good, excellent. So that means that the other guys are starting to get a little bit of a name. Well, that's the thing, guys, like Aldo, they've got this buzz now. Oh, my God, he's like a little Anderson Sylvain. - Aldo, and don't forget the drawing power of the zombie and the RC after that fight. - So when you're attacking and everything. - It goes to show you that good performances, people will see good performances and they will remember these guys' names. - And, WC, they've got the UFC's money behind them, so it's not like they're going anywhere. So, I'm glad it did better, 'cause I don't want them to go anywhere. - Now, the UI. - So, we're gonna do some news. - All right, so the February 5th UFC pay-per-view is now being headlined by Anderson Sylva versus Theodore Belfort. Makes sense, that's all cool. But they've just announced the undercard and you have Forest Griffin versus Rich Franklin. - I know it's coming here. - And Johnny Bones Jones versus Ryan Bader. - Oh, man. - I actually looked this up today because I'd heard something about it, so I looked it up and I was like, "This can't be true." - I really wanted to get your opinion on this. And I just, I really want to see these guys, I think they should be fighting at a later time. I don't like the fact that one of these guys is gonna lose that fight unless it's a draw, which that could be my, that would be what I would want. - Because Bones and Bader are really considered to be the future of that late heavyweight division. They're being, you know, you can't fix UFC, but they're being groomed for eventual title runs and a loss at this point in their careers against each other is kind of a waste. - Well, they're the two guys in the entire year, well, three is three, George St. Pierre as well, but those two guys, it doesn't matter who they're facing, I called them because, and it's partially a smart call and partially I just, I'm a huge fan of them. - Right. - I call those guys. Those two in George St. Pierre are the three guys that I always call, it doesn't matter what fight they're in. They can be fighting Godzilla and I would still call them. - Oh, it's gonna be interesting when you preview the show in February. - I know it's gonna hurt me deeply. - Now, the first thing one of these guys lose. So the first thing I thought when I saw this card was why don't you put, say, Forrest Griffin versus Bones and Bader versus Franklin? - Yeah. - You know, and then you've got each of these guys fighting, you know, an established guy, an established name, and then, you know, then the winners can fight or do whatever you want. - That would make more sense, definitely. You make two stars rather than just making one. I mean, how they'd be more-- - Assuming that the young guys win. I mean, Forrest Griffin could beat Jones, you know, it's very possible. But then that's-- - I think Jones would beat him. - And that's an honest prediction. - I think he would. - Despite the fact that Bones is a younger, newer guy, I think Forrest would get more out of beating a guy like Bones if he did than he would beating Franklin. - Oh yeah, he'd be the stopper. - Yeah. - He'd be the one to stop this meteoric rise. - I'd rather see Griffin versus Bones or Bader and then Franklin versus the other guy. But hey, you know what? Those are actually, that's turning into a really good card. - Yeah. - The one good thing is that if either one of Bader Jones loses, they're still gonna be on the upward trajectory. - Yeah, so-- - They're still in the picture. - It's not gonna kill their shot at rising up. And I think it'll be, and when all comes down to it, not counting like, oh, these guys, futures and all the stuff, those are fights that I really wanna see the fight. - Oh yeah, I can't wait to see-- - It's just a fight that we always expected would be for the title down the line. - Yeah, I really wanted it to be for the title, but what can you do? - We will bother making our calls now. It's months and months away. But that's-- - But I'm already excited. - February 5th has become a must-see pay per view. - Yeah, for sure, definitely. - Chail Sunin has now officially decided to talk to the California State Athletic Commission about appealing his drug failure, and that'll happen on December 12th. - No, that's no surprise. Everybody with that happens to appeals. - Yeah, you knew he was gonna do it. I think it has a chance. - Ah, no. - I agree. - I mean, he can talk his way of almost everything. - Get all his Republican friends behind him. I don't know, I still don't think all of it. He's not talking his way like a soul. - Like he cheated, buddy, that's it. I mean, I think he's just appealing because everybody appeals, and, you know, not appealing is basically admitting you're wrong, right? So, but on "Chail Sunin", it doesn't do that very well. - All of your favorite guys are in the news this week. Ross Pearson coming off of his September 15th loss to Cole Miller. He is undergoing surgery to repair damage cartilage and chip bones in his knee. He will be over a while. - That's a long one. - That loss really stopped his momentum from like being on a card perspective, and these injuries, this can't help. - And knee injury is so brutal. - This is bad, bad news for Ross Pearson, which is too bad, because it's not like you focus hand or anything. I mean, this is a knee injury, that those take a while. Those really take a while. - It's gonna be a while before we see him again, and who knows if he'll even be the same? - Yeah, with a bad knee, who knows, yeah. - That's too bad. There's actually a bunch of strike force news this week, which is because strike force was in quiet for the last, you know, like month or so, 'cause there hasn't really been any cards. But. - Or maybe there were cards we just didn't know. - Oh, we just didn't know. - We just forgot. No, we make fun of strike force, but we do try and cover it as best we can. - Give it a shot. - Give it the old college try before it folds. They've decided that despite there being, I think another three strike force cards over the rest of 2010, none of them are gonna be a CBS special. They're not gonna be on network TV. The word is that CBS is very leery, following that mayhem Miller versus the World Brawl at the end of the World Show. That was such a disaster of a show. - They had a chance to turn that into publicity and everything. And all it turned out was just to be, oh, well, CBS hated the fact that there was a post-fight brawl and then they're not even gonna market a fight out of it. - Well, I mean, all you had to do was not show the brawl to say it happened. Why are you gonna show the brawl and tick off your network even more? I mean, it was just so many bad decisions. Yeah, it was pretty poor. - And that's too bad 'cause they've actually got some cards lined up, like some fights coming up that could actually play well on CBS. - Oh, yeah. - But yeah, I don't think they're gonna get the chance that maybe they'll never get the chance. - Might be show time for life. - Yeah, it might be. CBS is gonna have to think long and hard and I don't think that they'll give 'em another shot after that debacle. Especially now that their golden boy just lost, you know, their big draw Fador. - Yeah. - He lost. - And he lost behind him. - He lost on network TV, lost on Showtime in front of like a few hundred thousand people. - Yeah, so really? I mean, the pod isn't very sweet right now. - Another potential drawing card for Strike Force, Bobby Lashley. His Strike Force contract just expired. They don't know if he's coming back. He doesn't think of a drawing anymore after he's just lost too. - Yeah, he's a guy that really needed to keep winning to stay popular and in everybody's interest. Do you think you see him again? Do you think he goes back to wrestling? Like if you're Bobby Lashley, like what do you do? If you're a Strike Force, what do you do? - He lost too, essentially, nobody. - Yeah, he did. - He essentially launched to the pool boy. Like, all this missing was the pink hair. But yeah, like he, I think Lashley's got another one in him. I mean, you don't put this much effort into doing this and just quit after one loss. That doesn't seem like Lashley's style. - That's true. - He's a hard working guy for, you know, say what you will about him, but he's been hard working in his wrestling, regular wrestling career, pro wrestling, everything. - Yeah, I mean, you still need that name. Strike Force does still need that name. You know, Herschel Walker's not gonna be around forever. - Oh. - I can't believe we were talking about Herschel Walker as the guy who was, you know, is gonna be dropping big ratings for these guys. - He's the drawn now. He's like 108 year old football player. - Yeah. - Oh man. - But he did look good in that fight. - Oh, that guy has an age. I mean, he could probably fight till he's 80, but still, I mean, the fact that Herschel Walker is gonna be your big draw, that's not a good thing. He's your most successful fighter with the name. He is gonna be fighting by the end of the year, too. So he's gotta fight coming up. And actually, there's UFC versus Strike Force battle coming up on December 4th. There's actually, both companies are running cards at the same time, on the same night. - That's not gonna go off with Strike Force. - Actually, you know what? And normally, I would say that, but check out the announced card so far. UFC is running the Ultimate Fighter Finale, which hasn't traditionally done great ratings anymore. Like these free Spike TV cards have been slightly disappointing. - But depends who's on the card though. - It's headlined by Damian Maya versus Kendall Grove. - Ooh. So it depends, your co-main event is Stefan Bonner versus Igor Pakruban. I don't even know this guy. - I have a hard time with his name, too. I know who you're talking about, though, but that's not very good. But the thing is, it depends on how well I think the season rates. - That's true. - Because how many people are gonna be into it. 'Cause the thing is, the last season of the Ultimate Fighter was a complete debacle of disaster. - Really boring clients. - The season before that was pretty much even worse. I mean, the fights were horrendous. The one of them didn't even have a climax fight, just Tito pulled out. The other one before that didn't have one either, 'cause Rampage couldn't fight. So it was just, I mean, the last two, it's hard to base it on the last two, just because the last two seasons were just terrible. So this season, I have a feeling this season's gonna be better, just because you've got two coaches who you know are gonna fight. - And it's only a couple of weeks in, there's already some characters. - Exactly. - Some people you remember. Last season, Kormagi, like sure he won, good for him, but I mean, he didn't capture anybody's imagination. - No, he didn't, and he also didn't win out. I mean, he'd lost a match, everyone, everyone in the season lost. You know, and half of them got injured and there wasn't a coaches fight at the end, it just wasn't as terrible, terrible season. Not to take anything away from the fighters, I mean, they were all talented guys. You know, they're all beat me up. (laughs) But I mean, what a terrible season for entertainment that was. So I think this season, the ratings are gonna be better. - Now, Strike Force is running a Showtime card the same night with Dan Henderson versus Abral, and Scott Smith versus Paul Daley. - Which. - That's good. I like Smith and Daley, that's gonna be fun. - That way, it sounds really interesting to me. - But I like the match of Smith and Daley, I don't like Paul Daley. - Oh yeah, no, no, no, no, it's a jerk. (laughs) - But those two, like they can brawl, they can go, Scott, like Paul Daley's the kind of guy who will just keep fighting. And Scott Smith is like a comeback. - Scott hands a steal for a reason. - Yeah, like that would be a brawl that will probably be more fun than most fights on that UFC card. - Yeah, I agree. I just think that it's gonna be a fun fight, but I don't think it's gonna be as much of a draw. I think people do recognize Paul Daley, but I don't think that it's gonna outdraw UFC, especially when it's the ultimate final. - Oh, and it's not on this big network and all that stuff, but there's so many things going against Strike Force. I mean, UFC's gonna dominate, but I still would like to see that Daley Smith fight, for sure. - That'll be one of those ones where you watch one and you watch the other card later, you tape it. - Yeah, yeah. - Actually, there's a Strike Force card coming up this Saturday night, and it seems like it's been a little while since the last Strike Force card. - It's been some time. - And yeah, so they've had a challengers, haven't they? Oh, yeah, there's a challengers not that long ago, but nobody, I mean, nobody other than us watch challengers. - Well, I didn't watch challengers. - Oh, it's nobody other than you. - Oh, yeah, there's a rating of one, it was me. - I can't, I can't, like unless there's somebody who I'm interested in, I won't watch challengers, I'm sorry, the production value is just so horrible. Let's see if the Showtime card has any more interest for ya. This is just the main card. There's a welterweight belt between Tyrone Woodley, who's, he's four and Owen Strike Force, he's eight and Owen in his career, versus Andre Galveo, and he's five and one, and that should be pretty good. They're really high on, Strike Force is really high on Woodley. - Yeah, they are. - He's winning, he's, you know, he's like four fights in. - What's his division? - Sorry? - That's welterweight belt. - That's welterweight, okay. I mean, yeah, Woodley can go. I mean, that's gonna be probably a pretty good fight. What I'm liking about this card is that it's, there's none of these, like the main events, and none of these guys are like these really slow lame Strike Force heavyweights that they've got. - Yeah, yeah, when you keep the weight classes lighter, you're gonna get some more and more exciting fights. I mean, if the two seasons go, the ultimate fighter taught us that, for sure, exactly. And then you've got a lightweight belt with Josh Thompson versus Kavakante, which is, Josh Thompson is excellent. - I really like him. - He's really exciting. - He had one of my fights of the year last year. - Yeah, he did. - That was not only you, a lot of other people. I mean, he was, that fight was really close to, was that fight of the year? - It depends on, I think it depends on the ask, I guess. - I think a popular opinion was, Clay Guida Sanchez, yeah. But I mean, that was definitely in the running. - Yeah, for sure. - And so that should be a fun fight. And then there's a women's welterweight championship out between Sarah Kauffman and Marla's Conan. I wanna see that. - I do too, I'm a big, we all are very big supporters of the Strike Force women's division. - Yeah, especially Sarah Kauffman, Canadian. - And Kauffman's great. - She's talented. - Marla's Conan is dropping down. She got beat down by cyborg. We'll just like everybody else can take anything away from her for that. - Got beat down by cyborg in the 145 division. Now she's dropping down, which is the right move. - Yeah, get away from cyborg. - If you can't beat cyborg, you know, you should be running and it. - So, if you're a woman in Strike Force or a female fighter, you shouldn't be around cyborg 'cause she's gonna destroy you. - She's gonna destroy you if you're a male fighter. - If you're a UFC light heavyweight, you should buzz. - You should buzz. - They should beat up T2RTs. (laughing) - And move it right along. - And yeah, so then the main event, I'm actually really excited about this actually. It's a welterweight championship fight between Nick Diaz and KJ Nunes. - Yeah, that's a big grudge match. - We were talking about Saroni Varner being a grudge match. - This is gonna be a grudge match. - This is another blood feud. These guys hate each other so much. - I would love to see Nick Diaz lose. Now, the little bit of history on this is Diaz and Nunes. They fought in Elite XC a couple of years ago for their 160 pound championship. Elite XC had different weight classes and there was a blood stoppage and KJ Nunes became the first, and I think only, I can't remember, Elite XC, probably 'cause it went around for very long. - It became the first lightweight champion. And so, already, you know, Nick Diaz is the kind of guy. He lost by a blood stoppage. He's gonna hate his opponent. - Oh yeah. - Well, he hates everybody. - Well, what happened was Nunes, he's from Hawaii and Elite XC did a show in Hawaii and they brought both guys out to come and talk and they started talking over each other. And then, they sort of trash-talked from each other and there was a huge ass brawl. (laughing) - Yeah, I remember, yeah, I remember that. I remember that. That was, that's one of the many, many reasons why Dana is having a little bit of, like Dana's has said that Nick Diaz would be just fine in the UFC and that he would put him in the UFC. - He just got a real attitude problem. - He just got a real attitude problem. - I think he's great. He's the unique guys like that around just to keep things interesting. - Yeah, he would just tone it down. I mean, his brother is kind of the same, cut from the same stock, but his brother's a little calmer, you know? So his brother is willing to play the game a little bit more. But Nick, I mean, buddy, I mean, you're exciting in everything, but the real money, I mean, he's probably making good money in Strike Force, but the real money's in the UFC. - Oh, yeah. - That's where the real competition is. - Well, and this Strike Force card is in San Jose, which has been like a pretty good market for the smaller UFC, the smaller MMA promotions. So I'm sure it'll draw pretty well, and he'll make some cash. - Those California cities, I mean, the populations are so huge that he gets Sacramento as well when you get a favor fight in there. It's a really great market because the population's huge, and there's a lot of stuff going on. I mean, people will pay to watch the fights. It's actually better to go to those places than it is to go to LA. - It's true, yeah, you know? - And so I guess the big question is, who do you think wins between Diaz and Nunes? - I want Nunes to win, so I'm gonna call Nunes. I'm not calling to Diaz, I don't care. - Nunes is a great striker, but Diaz, I've got to call Diaz on this. - Well, Diaz is a better fighter, but I'm still calling Nunes 'cause I don't want Diaz to win. - So I have to say, between Josh Thompson fighting, the women's title match, and Diaz versus Nunes, actually, you'll very rarely hear me say this. I am looking forward to this Strike 4 show. - Yeah, right down, everybody. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it too. I think it's gonna be really fun, really exciting. And I'm invested in the fighters too, which is something that definitely helps. I mean, when you actually invested in the fighters, the fight can be not even that exciting, and you're still, you know, rare to go. I wanna see Sarah Kaufman 'cause I think she's great. She's Canadian. I wanna see Nick Diaz lose, you know? So there's a lot of reasons to watch this card for sure. And I guess just to leave you with one more thought, Dana White was interviewed by Roger Sportsnet, and he said, and they actually asked him if he thought that the UFC was becoming oversaturated. And sometimes it seems like we are reviewing a lot of UFC cards, and there's a lot of TV. Dana said, there's-- - There's back-to-back ones coming up, isn't there? Like Saturday, one Saturday after the other? - Yeah, and that's not a freak occurrence. That's happened a few times this year. - It's happening again too. - So Dana's response was, "The market is oversaturated." That's insane. I've never even heard so much stupidity. So-- - Go Dana. - What do you think, can you have too many UFC events? - Well, I think it all depends on, it all depends on how successful you're going. If the people are buying and you're not losing money, then it's definitely worthwhile to have as many events as possible. If you're successful, have them every week, why not if people are gonna pay them? - Well, I think the mentality is like, I mean, there's basketball games on every night. - Not every night, but-- - But there's baseball games on every night. - But there's baseball games on every night. - And yeah, people will watch. - Yeah, people will watch. Provided they are watching it, then have as many events as you possibly can. You know, just make sure that you're not running events where like nobody's buying and you're losing money. - Would you watch UFC show every weekend? - I would try. You know, I mean, for purposes of this show, and also because I'm a huge UFC fan, so-- - I think eventually gets to the point where if there's too many events, then you start choosing by card as opposed to watching everything. - You do, that's true. But as I said, I mean, you try it and you see if it works, and if it doesn't work, then maybe you need to scale it down. But right now, it seems like they're making money on every event, so-- - Just keep going on. - And I'm not gonna complain about watching more MMA. - Yeah, that's mine. - But yeah. - Anyway, cool, that's all we got. - Yeah, so have a good week, guys, and hopefully Dave will get over his migraine, be with us next week. - And you can check us out at www.thehammermma.com, and you can subscribe to the show on our Facebook group, our iTunes, Zoom, everything. - We're everywhere. - Blackberry, we're on-- - Everywhere you want it. - We're omni-present. - So, good work. - All right, thank you. And yeah, we'll catch you guys next week. - Later. [drum beats]
