Another great lesson from the movie Forever Strong. When you perform poorly or have a bad day, gather information about what happened, flush the emotions, and get yourself back on track.

Welcome to the hard 90 podcast. I am your coach, Zach Sorensen, helping you to prepare, compete, and progress in the mental game. Don't spend another minute being angry about yesterday. So again, we're pulling another topic out of the movie Forever Strong, one of my favorite movies with mentorship by coach Larry Gelwick's unbelievable record he has as a rugby coach and the lessons that he taught to his team have impacted them the rest of their lives as dads, as husbands, or whatever they may be. And hopefully you can pull some of that out of there as you go watch this movie. So a couple topics or pieces of advice he gave to his players throughout the movie. In the movie, you see some of his players come to him. They have rules and we'll talk about his rules later this week for his team. If they violate the rules, it is kind of their job to step up and tell the coach themselves to take responsibility themselves for the way they acted and also to understand that there are consequences for them. In a time where one of his players is frustrated, his advice to him is don't spend another minute being angry about yesterday. Okay, so he's obviously we're talking about some frustrations that are taking place. And another point in the movie, he throws out some more advice. He says, "It's about being the best you. It's about being where you could end up, not where you are or were." And I love that. I think so many times we're so worried and I've shared this before, I know I have with you. When I talk to people about being the best, they shake their head and say, "I'm not the best." When I ask them what their biggest fear is, they say that I'm not going to be good enough. Okay? What we need to make sure we're focusing on are the controllables. We cannot control if we're the best. We cannot control if we're good enough. What we can control is focusing on where we could be and in making sure we attack today. When we are spending time being angry and frustrated about yesterday, we are not in the present moment. And our goal is to be the very best we can be in the present moment. So if you spend too much time thinking about how you struggled yesterday or in the game or how you treated somebody or your feelings or your struggles on your test or this or that or whatever it may be, you are not in the present moment. We need to make sure that we understand that being the best you means that you need to be present, that you need to be right here in this moment. When you make a mistake, yeah, you look at it, you evaluate it, you accept the responsibility, you hold yourself accountable and then you move on. And that will help you to be the very best you. The second part of that is it's about where you could end up. This is very important that we have vision for where we want to be. It's the goal setting process. This is where I want to be. And then it's all about action. We don't spend time worried about where we are or where we were or who we were or who we were at the time. Okay, that's not what we're worried about. I don't care where you're at right now. My focus for you is that you progress every single day. It doesn't matter where you stand today. It doesn't matter where you at today. It doesn't matter where you perform today. It doesn't matter what player you are on that team, whether you're in the starting five or you're the sixth man or whatever it may be in basketball. It doesn't matter to me where you are at as long as you are progressing. And the only way for you to be able to progress is to make sure that you are in the present moment. How do you make sure you're in the present moment? Alright, you take a peek at yesterday, you learn from it, and then you jump back into the present moment. You look at the future because you understand and recognize who you want to be and you understand the plan that needs to be put in place as you establish your plan and then you jump back into the moment and then you have action. Okay, action takes place in the present moment. The only way for you to have excellence is for you to be excellent in this moment. So make sure you think about that. Don't spend another minute being angry about yesterday, learn from yesterday, and then put it into action. Don't spend too much time worried about the future, recognize who you want to be in the future, put a plan in place that will help you to get to that point, and then jump right back into the present moment. Feel the ground beneath your feet. Put all your work and action in the dirt. Why? Instead of the clouds, the clouds are your dreams and your goals and everything that you're looking forward to, bring them back down to the dirt because that's where things are planted, that's where things take place, and that's where things happen on a firm foundation. Don't spend another minute being angry about yesterday, learn from it, and then dive into the action of the excellence of today.
