Nothing But The Blues
Nothing But The Blues #114
Good evening. Nice to see so many people here tonight. [music] Someone should have told me all the day that I was born. You got a lot of good things in life but most of it goes for. We leave you at the bottom and grown off crime land. You climb your way back up the start all over again. I don't know what you call that and I don't want to moan. But all that is left man is blood to the bone. [music] A woman is a woman and a man is what you need. So you give 'em all they want and you go down on your knees. You tell 'em that you love 'em and always will be true. And the next damn thing that turned the banks on you. I don't know what you call that and when you're sitting all alone. But all that is left man is blood to the bone. [music] [music] [music] Someone should have told me the money well from fame. I know guarantees for anything when you're playing this life's game. It's all part of the system and it cannot be undone. The lens light's gonna hit you no matter where you're from. Well, I don't know what you call that and when you're hit by the stone. But all that is left man is blood to the bone. [music] That's what I call a sudden ending. Welcome to Nothing but the Blues is Me, Cliff. And it's a sudden ending because it's a live album. And the band goes straight into the next number. And so whoever made the CD put the track end there. The track was Blue to the Bone by the Snowy White Blues Project. And it's from their album In Our Time Live. I recorded in Holland in February this year. Well Ben Prestige is supporting Ian Siegel on his current tour. I'm hoping to catch them next week. But till then, this is them. [music] I'd rather be a sloppy drunk now baby than any way that I know. [music] I'd rather be a sloppy drunk now baby than any way that I know. [music] Time Live won't hang around never. This is so and so. [music] I'm that ooey baby. Bang me one more have a pie. [music] Ooey baby. Bang me one more have a pie. [music] Don't get sloppy drunk and I'm being thrown away. This whole damn joint. [music] I'm gonna get sloppy drunk now baby down on Grandpa. Down on Grandpa Street. [music] I'm gonna get sloppy drunk baby down on Grandpa Street. [music] Time Live won't hang around never. I'm gonna go, good man, see me. [music] I said ooey baby. Bang me one more have a pie. [music] Ooey baby. Bang me another another pie. [music] I'm gonna get sloppy drunk and I'm being thrown away. This whole damn. Bang me this whole damn. Bang me this whole damn joint. [music] [music] [music] He gets home at 5.30, pours himself a drink, sits down in his chair. [music] He picks a fight with Momo, complains about his kids getting in his chair. [music] At night he sits alone and smokes, sees his frown behind his lighter's flame. [music] Now the same friends in my mirror got my daddy's blood through my face. [music] Face a whim burns the light that is hell. [music] Momo's crying. [music] [music] [music] I drink. [music] Check in TV dinner, six minutes on defrost, three on high. [music] Prepare to wash it down with another one, shadow whiskey on the side. [music] It's not so bad alone here. I don't mind every night's the same. [music] I don't need no other lover coming around here trying to make me change. [music] Face a whim burns fly lovers lean by and by. [music] Oh man, you're sitting free. [music] I drink. [music] I know who I am, but I don't. [music] Give me a day. [music] [music] Fish swim. Birds fly. Daddy's yeah. [music] Momo's crying. Oh man. Sitting free. [music] I drink. He and Siegel with "I Drink" from his 2008 album, "The Dust" would be Jay Cole on pedal steel guitar there. And before that Ben Prestage with Sloppy Drunk, the big Joe Williams song from his album, "Real Music". I'm going to stay with the drinking theme, but go back to 1930 for a couple of piano tracks. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Piano Kid Edwards with "Give Us Another Jog" recorded in "Grafton, Wisconsin" in December 1930. And before that Frank Melrose, Kansas City Frank as he was known, with "Past The Jog" recorded in around 1930, issued on the Brunswick label. Well if you know Eric Bibbs because guitar album, you'll probably remember that Grant Demodi played harmonica on it. Grant's got his own album out. And this is Eric returning the favour. [music] In my darkest hours, I know they won't last. I'll be alright someday. Deep in my heart, I do believe I'll be alright someday. [music] [music] In the dead of winter, I can still hear spring. I'll be alright someday. Deep in my heart, I do believe I'll be alright someday. I feel alright, I feel alright today. Deep in my heart, I do believe I'll be alright today. [music] [music] Grant Demodi with the Reverend Kerry Davis song "I'll Be Alright". It's from his great album "Play Down My Burden". Well it's been a while since I played any ZZ Hill Jr. so let's have one from him now. [music] Trying to have that lonely children trace. I know that I ain't a wrong door with man. But I just can't help myself. I'm doing the best I can. It ain't easy. It ain't easy. When you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Hey Mr. bartender, pull me a drink of gin. Trying to drown my sorrow, but I just can't win. I know that I ain't a wrong door with man. But I just can't help myself. I'm doing the best I can. It ain't easy. It ain't easy. When you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. [music] [music] [music] Hey Mr. bartender, pull me a drink of gin. Trying to drown my sorrow, but I just can't win. I know that I ain't a wrong door with man. But I just can't help myself. I'm doing the best I can. It ain't easy. It ain't easy. When you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Trying to live my life, one day at a time. But my baby, she stay on my mind. Got to be strong. Keep on keepin' on. I never felt so lonely since my baby's been gone. It ain't easy. It ain't easy. When you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. [music] This is what you call a blues. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Say you sufferin' with the blue. Cause my love will fall to you. And the years will pass you by. Oh yeah. [music] [music] So long, so long and bad. So long, so long and bad. Cause my love will fall to you. So long and bad. Cause my love will fall to you. Oh yeah. [music] So long and bad. So long and bad. Well Paul Thorns got a new album out Pimps and Preachers and this is the title track. My daddy had a Cadillac, my uncle Joe Ford. One was Satan's angel and one word for the Lord. They had some hard earned wisdom. They both became my teachers. I was a young disciple of Pimps and Preachers. [music] The school of life was open. Each day I worked in class. When I didn't pay attention, they kicked me in the ass. They were turnin' out young bitches and converted non-believers. I was learnin' from the masters. Pimps and Preachers wanted to do the darkness. One led me to the light. One showed me how to love. One taught me how to fight. I guess you could say I am an overachiever. And I only got a gratitude to Pimps and Preachers. [music] They kept me under their wings. But when I passed the test, they gave me a pissed-eyed suit. They pushed me from the desk. Now I'm standin' on a corner with hootin' hundred seekers. I'm startin' a new religion. I call it Pimps and Preachers. One told me to do the darkness. One led me to the light. One showed me how to love. One taught me how to fight. I guess you could say I am an overachiever. And I only got a gratitude to Pimps and Preachers. [music] Stand there and do nothin'. But if you wanna go far, don't try to please everybody. And be proud of who you are. Get out there in the game. Don't sit up in the bleachers. That is the free loss of fear. Pimps and Preachers wanted to do the darkness. One led me to the light. One showed me how to love. One taught me how to fight. I guess you could say I am an overachiever. And I only got a gratitude to Pimps and Preachers. [music] Paul Thorne with Pimps and Preachers. Well, the next band made quite a splash when they arrived. Most notably because of their very young age. But that didn't stop them playing great blues. This is the homemade jams blues band. [music] [music] Went to my extra town down that road. That's the road. Once was we gone too long. Look, I knew I was gonna do wrong when I smell. Smell that sweet perfume. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. [music] I told my lady I would come see me. But when I come to my exchange, all that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. [music] Went to go play my basketball. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. I told my lady I would come see me. But when I come to my exchange, all that's turned into dawn. Look, that's turned into dawn. [music] [music] [music] [music] I'm leaving you, baby. [music] Look, that one's supposed to be gone too long. [music] But when I move, that's turned into dawn. [music] All I knew was nothing wrong. [music] Tell my lady I would come see me. [music] But when I got there she changed all that's turned into dawn. [music] Well, I'm leaving you, baby. [music] Look, that's turned into dawn. [music] Well, I'm leaving you, baby. [music] Look, that's turned into dawn. [music] Well, I'm leaving you, baby. [music] [music] [music] [music] Well, I told my lady I would come see back. [music] But when I got there my exchange all that's in love. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] I homemade jams, blues band, and dusk till dawn. From the 2009 album, I got blues for you. Well, where do I go now? I think I'll have some Mississippi Fred McDonald. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Fabulous Fred McDonald with Someday Baby. I wonder how long it went on for and why they faded it. It's recorded in Como, Mississippi in December 1965. Great stuff. Well, back to 1913, I think. This is Alfred Lewis. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] That's a guy called J.D. Short with Lonesome Swamp Rattlesnake recorded in Grafden, Wisconsin in June 1930. I've never seen J.D. Short on any other DJ's playlist. If you're no different, let me know. Before that, Alfred Lewis with Mississippi Swamp Mone, one of only three tracks he ever made, recorded in Chicago in May 1930. Well, let's come back up to date now with the excellent band 24 pesos.
