And it's from a four CD box at Texas Blues put out by JSP in 2004. And this one's mostly devoted to rambling Thomas. So the notes are all about rambling Thomas. And there's nothing about Willy Reed. So I couldn't find out anything about him either. So if you know anything about Willy Reed who was recording in Texas in 1935, let me know. Well a new name to the show now is a guy called Glen Terry who was born in India but has now adopted Australia as his home. You must've been a perfect clown, but baby, I know what you're puttin' down. Unmistakable sound of Louis Jordan. I love his stuff. I know what you're puttin' down, and I got a three CD box set of Louis Jordan for Christmas. Sixty great tracks, but sadly no sleeve notes, so the exact recording details of that, I don't know. And before that a guy called Joe Hill Lewis, Joe Hill Lewis, she's taking all my money. He called himself Joe Hill Lewis to the bebop boy and his one man band, but he sounded as though he had somebody on piano on that track as well. He was born in 1921, but died of tetanus at the age of 35 as the result of a gardening injury. I'll say it eventually sustained, apparently, allegedly in the garden of one of his mistresses. That's what it says on the sleeve notes. Well, somebody who's been underrated or who hasn't achieved the attention, hasn't... I don't know what I'm saying tonight, it's garbled. Somebody I don't think has received the attention he deserves is a guy called Philip Walker. So this is him with Port Arthur Blues. [music] Well, my mother's in Port Arthur. [music] My daddy's done gone on. [music] Well, my mother's in Port Arthur. [music] And my daddy's done gone on. [music] You know it's kind of tough on my mama. [music] Oh, the kids are grown. [music] I left run out of Texas. [music] Wasn't hardly but a kid. [music] Yeah, I left out of Texas. [music] Wasn't nothing but a kid. [music] Looking back on it. [music] Not so sure about what I did. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Thought there was nothing to it. [music] Keep those women come in. [music] [music] I'm going back to Texas. Oh, my God, I feel more. [music] Yeah, I'm gonna get back to Texas. [music] Oh, I feel more. [music] If I could see my mama. [music] You know she shouldn't have to be out. [music] Philip Walker with Paut Arthur Blues. And if you've not come across him, I think there's a couple of tracks on YouTube that are worth looking at. But that's from his 1984 album, Stuff as I Want to Be, on the Round of Label. Great stuff, I think. Well, I think I'll play some piano now. And I've played Charlie Spand before, but only backing Blind Blake. But he recorded quite a bit under his own name. So, how's a track that he recorded in Richmond, Indiana in August 1929? This is Charlie Spand and Mone in the Blues. [music] I've had pretty women, and there's a hangin' round. [music] I've had pretty women, always a hangin' round. [music] I bet you the only one that ever turned me down. [music] I love you baby, no matter what you do. [music] I love you baby, no matter what you do. [music] Now I'm out of Theresa, so I thank you. [music] I cried for mercy, but you don't know what mercy could be. [music] I cried for mercy, but you don't know what mercy could be. [music] You should let me cry, I've got something that you never see. [music] [music] [music] I'm gonna put 'em out in, and watch the setting sun. [music] I'm gonna put 'em out in, and watch the setting sun. [music] And I was, no, no, now you want your love, make sun. [music] [music] I'm right up, right up, right up. Mama, where you been so long. I'm right up, right up, right up. Lord, where you been so long. [music] I ain't no lovin', Mama said she'd be gone. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Now Mama, I ain't got no plumb good right around. [music] Now I ain't got no plumb good right around. [music] Now it seemed like my ride was trying to clean me up. [music] Now the big bell, the bell is rankin', and the little bell, the little tone. [music] Mama, I'm lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, long. [music] Can't I get up, get up in the morning. Mama, I ain't gone. [music] I ain't gone damn well. I ain't in my breakfast, and feet don't have fun. [music] [music] [music] Now what I know you, can't I miss me when I'm gone. [music] Now what I know you, can't I miss me when I'm gone. [music] Well, two great piano tracks there. I hope you'd agree. That was "Little Brother Montgomery" with no special rider blues. It's the first recording you ever made, recorded in Grafton, Wisconsin in September 1930. And before that, Charlie Spander moaning the blues, recorded in Indiana in August 1929. And I said he'd back blind Blake a lot. It's not known who the guitarist was on that track, but I don't think it's blind Blake. It doesn't quite sound like him. Well, Hurricane Katrina actually inspired quite a lot of music, despite all the devastation it caused. And this next track is one of those. It's Chris Thomas King with baptized in dirty water. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Chris Thomas King with baptized in dirty water from his 2006 album Rise. And as I say, it's inspired by Katrina. Well, I think I'll stay with the kind of dirty water theme, but change the style a bit. This is Mary Johnson and Muddy Creek Blues. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music]
