[music] Don't think about it 'cause Christmas just doesn't ever live. [music] Ooh, and a glad, ain't an' a married day. [music] Oh, ain't glad with the people that ain't an' a married day. [music] Thinkin' about Christmas goin' in New Year's on this week. [music] Yes, get it, boy. [music] Don't stop nothin' out. [music] Don't wear it out, tan it, be don't be don't be don't be don't. [music] I got a number, man, I got it for myself. [music] I got a number, and I got it for myself. [music] New Year's on common Christmas, just nothin' to live. [music] [music] [music] Yes, got a pair of wire at you, boy. Don't forget it, now. Here we go. [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> Yeah, welcome to Nothing but the Blues with me, Cliff, and Happy New Year to everybody. That was Lightning Hopkins getting us off with Happy New Year. Recorded in 1953, it was the B side of the single that had Merry Christmas on the A side that I played on my Christmas show. So they obviously recorded them both at the same time, very unsurprising. And I hope 2009 is going to be a great year for you all. One of the albums from last week's Look Back that didn't quite make it was the album by Travis Moonchild, Haddix, Daylights at Midnight. And since on there he says that nine is his favourite number, I thought we'd carry on with him. This is nine behind. [MUSIC] >> Nine in the morning, when I get up, I have nine cups of coffee and nine different cups. I have nine lumps of sugar, each and every one and I make nine telephone calls. [MUSIC] >> Nine is all I see. [MUSIC] >> I call nine different ladies and attain me at home. If I have a company or if I'm all alone, I have one special lady. See most of the time, you know what, the one to ten. [MUSIC] >> She's a nine. >> Number nine. [MUSIC] >> Nine is all I see. [MUSIC] >> Here we go. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] >> I was home alone. I thought my wife was away. I called nine lovely ladies over to the crew of the play. My wife was listening in. Heard every word I said and I got nine huge knocks. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Well, I had email from Colin Briscoe, who is a volunteer on KK's Blue Show on 2SCR Radio in Australia. Thanks for your kind words, Colin. And Australia seems to have quite a vibrant blue scene. I mentioned on the Christmas show that I must dig out William Clark's 1990 Blowing Like Hell album, and Colin agreed. So this is a William Clark with Must Be Jelly, and this is for you, Colin. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] And one house after those two, that was classic Johnny Winter with murdering blues from his 1985 album Serious Business and before that live Sherman Robertson with guitar man recorded in Holland in 2005. Well, it's a company called pristine audio who mostly spend their time cleaning up old classical records and they've developed some new techniques apparently, but they also occasionally clean up some blues, which is why I'm telling you this. And I bought a blind lemon Jefferson album from them last year. I'm going to play a track called stocking feet blues and it's certainly cleaned up. And there's certainly less surface noise on it, but I think it kind of loses a bit of the edge as well. I'd be interested to know what you think this is blind lemon Jefferson stocking feet blues. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Wonderful stuff, wonderful. Mississippi Fred McDowell with Shake 'em On Down, recorded by Alan Lomax in Como, Mississippi in September 1959. And it's a book of white original. And if you could hear other noises in the background, there was somebody called Fanny Davis on Combe and Miles Pratcher on second guitar. And before that, a cleaned up version of blind lemon Jefferson stocking feet blues. As I said, I'd be interested to know, especially if you're a Jefferson fan, what you thought was a cleaned up version, because I think taking the surface noise away actually loses a bit. But hey, you know, maybe you like it. I'm going to come a bit more up to date now with Richie Milton on the lowdown. This is when baby don't want to play. [MUSIC] No, I love my baby, but I feel there's something wrong. Every night we've been in bed this week, there's been nothing going on. We have a love so strong, but I feel like it's slipping away. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] Makes me feel so bad. I can't blast another day. See the nothing I can do or say. My baby don't want to play. No, I bought my baby perfume to make a feel real nice. Even took it to the movies to see your favorite pictures twice. And when we got back home, we were lying on the bed. She kissed me and said sorry, Richie, I'm watching TV and staying well. No, I know my baby loves me. She don't want to make me blue. No, nothing but nothing I can do or say. My baby don't want to play. No. [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC]
