Rebel FM Episode 57 - 04/01/10
No April Fools' jokes here, just serious gaming business. OK, that's a partial lie. Join Matt C., Ryan O. and the regular crew as we discuss all kinds of games like Just Cause 2, God of War 3, and all the games we saw at this year's PAX East. After that, we jump into letters, touching upon a ton of gaming related topics, but very rarely keeping it serious. Enjoy!
[MUSIC] Hey, what's up everyone, welcome to Rebel If I'm Episode 57. That was my best attempt at a radio voice. I wasted my energy on the first intro. >> You wasted your lack of energy on the first intro. >> I'm Anthony Gallegos, with me is Arthur Geese, who's very tired. Tyler Barber, back from PAX East, how's bringing the heat and the energy? And then we got area fives, Ryan O'Donnell. >> Hey, thanks for having me guys. I just thought I'd come through and tell you a little bit about what I've been playing. >> With me is always my hetero-life mate, Matt Chanderne. >> Hey, hey, hey, how's it going kids? It's great to be here, thanks for having me. >> It's really a shame that there's not an internet service to order someone to fuck me in the ice pockets. >> I'm actually physically uncomfortable with the guys talking like that. >> Well, you know, it's fitting because right now there's that video going around of gaming in the 90s from everything is terrible. Y'all saw that shit, right? You know, what we just saw was Ryan spitting beer on himself. >> Oh, did he just spit beer on him? >> Ryan just had a moment where he looked a lot like a baby spitting up on himself. >> It's like you're a tea party activist, and the beer can is a black politician. >> That's what you leveled fuck, man, fuck. >> They're just some people who are really offended by that stuff, so I've got to work it in now. >> Yeah, man, so I'm sorry, Tyler, it's me, Arthur and Tyler. >> I'm talking about how you hate black. >> Here with man, babies. >> Yeah, really. So what games have you been playing, Ryan, lately? >> Just because. >> Titty pinch. >> Oh, wait, is that an NDA? >> It was under NDA, though. >> We have a barcode, Tyler just spoiled the upcoming. >> Copyright 2010, Area 5 Media. >> In Wario, where DIY, I was trying to think of, they ask you to name your game before you start making it, and I don't know why, but the first two words that popped in my head were nipple and pinch. >> Maybe because whenever you're singing songs yourself, which is something that Ryan does all the time, he's always singing to himself. But the words always consist of dick, fuck, cock. >> Like song- >> Shove it in your ass, you little bitch. >> Nah, I know. It's mostly like dong. >> That's catchy. >> Because dong rhymes with song, so it'll be like, now you're listening to my song, and you can suck my dong, and it is so long, no, and stuff like that. >> I see your songs take place in a fantasy world. >> No, it's, you know, I was a kid that- >> How did we work our way towards talking about Ryan's dick already? >> Well, back to his DIY game. >> Oh, like two and a half minutes in. >> Nipple pinch. It just seemed like something that would be in Wario where anyway, except for it would be a man's chest that you were pinching the nipples of, so I'm making a woman's chest nipple. It's also like, you know, it's my first Wario where game and, you know, you're supposed to make penises when you start drawing something. >> So it seemed like the most progressive thing to do was to regress. >> Yeah, exactly. I was basically like, I'm going to go with the normal thing that everyone's supposed to do. I'm going to make Jason and Cesar laugh tomorrow when I show them this game. >> Jason. >> And that's pretty much all there is to it. I'm a child, I spit up with myself, I send songs about dongs, and you make a game about pinching nipples. >> Yeah, you get to do, like, girl sounds like she screams when it happens too. >> I haven't gotten to that part yet, who knows, maybe. >> You haven't done the voiceover work? >> No, I'm just working on the art right now. >> Everyone knows that the voiceover stuff comes really late in development. >> I want to see you in a YouTube video that demos nipple pinch. >> Oh, sweet Lord. See, now everyone knows that I'm making this dumb game. >> Yeah. >> All right, my next game is called Mondrian's Odyssey, and it's about the famous artists, and you know, you'll kind of surf through his paintings. >> Hey, if you could squeeze it in between Alpha and Beta, you should pull the mic a little closer to your face. >> Now, if you're done spitting beer all over it. >> I suppose I am. >> Thank you. >> That DIY game, though, sounds really cool if it actually sounds like the perfect thing I could have used when I was on the plane, just because how cool would it have been to make a stupid little game and then be like, "Tyler, play my game." >> You used to have occupied your time. >> You used Flipkno Studio. >> Why use Flipkno Studio, which is almost like, you can think of that as an app, but it really is kind of like a game, because, I mean, I guess there's nothing to play, right? But it's super entertaining doing the interactive art thing and then showing it to people. >> Right. >> You can do that thing. It can be like, you have a guess in that movie, Bottle Rocket. >> Yes. >> When-- >> I don't think we're hipster enough for that. >> When Luke Wilson draws like a little Flipbook animation of a dude doing a pole vault and doing like a million flips and landing, like, I don't know, it's just a fun way to kill time to draw little fun animations, and then you can do it digitally instead of wasting a bunch of paper. >> It seems like the DS is like such a natural fit for all these make your own little game things. Like, what was that other one? Not do it yourself. Like, the other one that we saw at the Nintendo thing a while back ago. >> Are you talking about the fighting one? >> Yeah. >> Photo dojo. >> Photo dojo, yeah. It's like these cool games that you can basically like integrate your own creations, and it's just like such a cool thing. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Well, and like photo dojo is totally, they say it's going to be priced as like an impulse buy. They don't expect people to think of it as like a full game. It's just something to like waste time with. >> And FlipNote Studio is free, so. >> Yeah. >> And do it yourself, is that a-- >> That's a full game. >> It's a full game. >> But it is a full game. >> But it has like a game on top of creating. >> Yeah, exactly. >> It does. >> So there's a bunch of why you wear micro games that are, you know, the same stuff you, the series has always had. And they're, I still like the old ones better when you use the buttons instead of using the touch screen, but-- >> Yeah, I can only imagine the horrific YouTube videos we're going to see of the games that people make, you know? >> And if I'm making a game about pitching nipples, you know, it's going to get-- >> And once it's yours, it's like tame compared to what we'll see. >> Totally tame. No dicks. >> Yeah. >> I was telling Ryan that he should like do a series of them that are all themed sexually like that, but not actually use like the actual art. So have a game that's about penetration, but it's, you know, it's like maybe putting a hot dog in the bun or something like that, and then have a game where it's nipple twist, but you're turning dials on a machine that looks suspiciously like, you know, a human torso. >> Meanwhile, I'll wait for the DIY version of Tunnel Fold Dicks. >> Yeah, I-- my mind immediately went to even grosser places, so-- >> Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, that's just it. It's like, it's probably going to-- like you said on YouTube. >> Like, like, ah, massage parlor, happy ending time, and then it's just like, that's all they tell you. Happy ending time, you're like, ah, I know what I need to do. [laughter] >> I went there. I made Tyler a comfortable submission accomplished. >> You should just make this game, you know? You need some flippin' notes, or whatever, you need DIY. >> I do. So, what else do you need to check it out? >> Oh, yeah, I just started that today, so I'm experimenting. Nipple Twist is my-- is my nipple pinch is my first game. >> So, your debut product? >> It is. Like I said, I'm going to move on from there, but I've also been playing Jessica's Dose. >> Yeah. >> And that's-- >> Sounds like a beer. >> It is. Jessica's Dose. [laughter] Drinking with your friends. >> Had a slice of lime. [laughter] >> And it's like 'cause C-U-Z. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Drinking 'cause just 'cause to-- is pretty darn good. I mean, I was sold on it because I played the demo. >> I sold on it as soon as I saw the GIF of the guy shooting a tank and then grappling to it and the tank pulling them up into the sky. >> Right, yeah. >> Like that was immediate, like, it's old. >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> That Matt was doing that today with enemies, he was like attaching those tanks to various enemies and shooting them. >> This guy. >> For me. >> I'm a simple man. I like exploring in open world games and this game does that just letting you, like, giving you a giant open world and letting you go around it and specifically in the full three dimensions which is to say you can fly all over the place in a number of different ways. It does that better than any other open world game probably. >> Do you ever, like, in a-- like a lot of open worlds, you know, you'll drive around, you'll be like, yeah, it's cool and driving around but you won't ever run into anything that interesting. Like, do you find-- >> No, there's interesting stuff everywhere. That's-- I mean, the-- >> Define interesting. >> Okay, well, let me put it this way. >> Things to shoot a grappling hook onto. >> Right. >> In Grand Theft Auto games, in Grand Theft Auto 4. >> That's the one I'm specifically thinking about. >> I tend that much interesting stuff in my mind. >> It's all visual but you're right. There's nothing-- it's not interactive. There's nothing to do out there. So that's why I tend to do the missions, like it's what I end up focusing on. >> Right. >> And in this game, it's the exact opposite where I don't do the main story missions at all. In fact, I really don't like this story or the voice acting. >> I heard the voice acting is awful. >> It's really bad. >> Okay. >> And the combat is not particularly fun either and, in fact, makes the-- really puts into perspective how good the shooting was in Grand Theft Auto 4 compared to most of these games. I don't know if you remember. >> The action Gorilla probably has my favorite shooting out of any of those kinds of games. >> It is good. >> And it factions is good. >> The thing-- red faction is a game that you really miss while you're playing this one too because there's-- >> Because you can't bring every building you see down. >> Yeah. >> There's a lot of destruction in the game but it's all like-- >> It seems like-- it seems like everything's painted red that will blow up. >> Yeah. >> Exactly. >> And then the trade-off is that moving around is very pedestrian, no pun intended, in red faction. >> Exactly. >> I mean, you're driving and you're walking. You're not using a grappling hook. >> Right. >> And the interaction of the hook really was that you could destroy everything and in this, it's like-- >> I mean, eventually you get a jet pack and that's fucking awesome. >> Right. This seems like it has kind of the hook is like less the destruction and it's really that grapple hook parachute combo. >> The grapple parachute combo and being-- and moving around the most massive open world game I've ever played. >> I like the things that most people probably find mundane and boring, like you can very early-- I mean, the first few missions are tutorials. You have to play them. You have to, you know, go through them the way that it wants you to. But then, very shortly after that, you're in the giant open world and it's-- you look at your map and you see just how many locations there are to explore and right near the opening point there are like bases, like military bases and you get there and there are crazy helicopters and jets and everything that you possibly imagine is like-- is there. You can find it within five minutes of entering the giant open world and then at that point, you can do whatever you want. So what I found myself doing was, you know, getting a helicopter or plane and flying straight up just to see how high the, you know, how high it could go. >> The cap. >> Exactly. Where does this cap out? And you get so high. Like just so-- >> You sure that? >> -- so high. >> Yeah. Like there are these giant-- there's this one particularly giant mountain in the game. It's kind of the center of the map and you get like twice as high as the highest mountain in the game through the cloud layers and all this stuff and then you can jump out of that plane and even if you dive straight down, you can skydive for something like three or four minutes just and the controller is rumbling, you know, I was playing with headphones on the first time and when you're playing with headphones like there's no music that's kicking in just that sound of the wind and, you know, the only thing it doesn't have-- I wish I could go into first person mode and really like just look out at the world. >> Experience skydiving. >> Exactly. But it was just great. Very early on I got a plane, saw-- I was just like touring around the world and I saw this like little island and I was like I'm going to just skydive there, I'll just go see what's there. And so I flew really high up and jumped out of my plane and started moving down and I just noticed that when I was looking at the island from above I could sort of make out that a bunch of the stuff on it was building the shape of a skull and I was like ooh, that place is probably bad and I sort of looked at where it was on the map. I'm like I bet they're like that's like where the boss is and stuff. Maybe I shouldn't go there right now so I kind of chickened out and then looked around and it was just ocean all around me but I saw like a little island off in the distance and I was like I wonder if I can make it there. So I just pulled out my parachute and went as far and long as I could go but you know I had to like really pull back and pull back so it ended up taking me like four or five minutes of just parachuting to get over there and I got there and there was nothing there but it was cool that I made it there. And then off in the distance I saw an oil rig out in the ocean and I was like huh, I wonder if I could get there. Well I could have hijacked a boat and taken it but then I was like I wonder if I could swim so I started swimming and there's a whole like sort of murky underwater and like coral reefs and stuff. And you can totally swim underwater in those. Or the sharks. No but they're fish but no I didn't see any sharks which would even awesome. I can't even lame. But I did swim there. I couldn't handle it. I don't think I could. Even in crisis I hated that because in crisis if you swim out too far shark came through. That was the invisible wall. Exactly. It was invisible. Whoa. But in this game you can just swim. So are you two videos of a tower? It took me like five minutes to swim out to this oil rig but I eventually made it there and then climbed up and stole a helicopter and shot a bunch of dudes you know it's like that sort of thing. I mean things like that are cool. I mean in crackdown I used to try and find like the tallest building just to make it up to it for no reason. Exactly. This is just like so vast compared to that though it just feels, it's a different thing. I'm not saying that one is better than the other. They're different mechanics and both games do really interesting stuff but the non core gameplay of it or at least the non-story mission driven gameplay is what I really really enjoy and I could see myself coming back to it. It just seems like a month and a month. It would have been like the best game ever. The emergent shenanigans. Oh yeah. Yeah that would have been. I mean let's say in theory that I wanted to go up in a plane, bail out of it and pull my shoot. Could I then grapple the plane and get back into it and keep going? Yes. Yeah I mean if you're within range but your grapple does have a very long range. What realistically happens is that all these like locations around the world they're generally like I said basis so your objective is to blow stuff up and find little hidden item boxes around those places. And so you'll steal a chopper or not even steal a chopper you'll fast travel to a spot where you know there's a bad ass chopper. So there is fast travel. Oh yeah. With unlimited rockets and unlimited chain gun every one of these things has. And you take your badass helicopter which is super easy to fly over to a base and start shooting everyone just like until you know everything's blowing up. So you know like real life. Exactly. And then they'll call an air support. So before you know it there's three attack choppers on your ass. And you'll start taking them down and maybe you kill the first three and then they send in another group and your chopper is taking a little damage. So you just keep blasting and keep blasting and then your shit explodes and you have like a moment right when it's exploding to eject. And then as soon as you eject your skydiving/parachuting. How do you get rid of like people that are all over you though. You fly well and shoot. So it is just like a GTA for lack of a better thing where it's like get out of the area type thing or lose them. I usually you can kill them all. Well you can. You can like you can lose them like like if you run far enough away the helicopters will still follow you. And then if you kill the helicopters that are following you as long as they don't send somebody else on you in the meantime then like you can get rid of your wanted level. So is it hard because that was always something like in prototype for instance that was a game that for me it was really detrimental to it how hard it was to get rid of like the fuzz. I'm playing it on board but I don't I find it very easy to escape like you'll you'll constantly be running low on health but never so much so that you can't just get out of there. Like Matt said your grappling hook has such a long range that you can usually escape. So anyway what ends up happening is your helicopter blows up you're flying through the air and then you grapple another chopper hijack that and continue the process. So would you say there is just caused to buy this game. It's the type of game where if you were trying to marathon it I don't think that would be fun. Oh God. And I think people like to see me as you had to review it. Yeah that would. It seems like to me the way I keep hearing people talk about it it almost sounds like the way dead rising was for me where it's like I would go in and I'd be like today I'm going to try and do this but then it would always just evolve into me fucking up zombies for as long as I could because that was fun and it almost sounds like in this too it'll be like yeah maybe I'll do mission but now I kind of just want to fly this plane and see what happens. There's so much space to explore you can you know like I found one of those like contact esque giant radio dishes yes I saw that when I was watching and I was like wow okay what's this thing doing here you know you'll just constantly find different bases or you're like oh here's an airport that means there's going to be badass choppers and planes from here I better you know clean this place remember this place and I'll come back here whenever I just have like a challenge list like border winds had a challenge list of stuff that like it was like grapple hunter dudes to a cylinder or I mean are the achievements at least good like a propelling you forward and it has it has tried this it does have achievements like there's one there's one thing that I see it counting up lots of different things that it's always telling you when you kill people in a unique way like like if you attach a cable to something and then attach it to a dude and then you kill the dude while he's attached to a cable or you attach a cable to him and pull him toward you and kill him in the air while he's flying toward you they called a jungle kill and that's always counting up every time you do that so there's there's a and it counts things like when you fly under bridges in planes and helicopters so it has like a GTA style and I keep seeing GTM sorry but it's like a GTA style like tracking like you have killed this many people you have traveled I honestly have miles I haven't looked I'm just assuming it does because I mean it's all those things are popping up on the screen while you're doing you know God Blisker is a war two for starting that for keeping track of your progress on like towards things that you wanted to do yeah yeah but the thing that I guess the to conclude ish it's just that there are there are like 364 locations scattered throughout this giant giant giant world and every time you know I play it'll take me you know a couple hours just to find a few of those locations and shoot a bunch of shit up and then I'm I feel like I've done some stuff ahead a good time and I'll put it down and if I were to just come back to it once every couple weeks over the course of the next year I think that would be just a wonderful I would have felt very fulfilled by the game a really great purchase it's someone like Dan Shoe who yeah achievement tracks he's a completionist plays with the strategy guide as he goes through the it's the exact opposite it would drive you nuts because as you're going through and like you'll always see something there's like every place you turn every direction you look there's some other thing other shiny thing that you could be running off to so it would just drive you absolutely man there's just too much stuff yeah it really seems like a game that in the future would benefit from like a keys to the city thing like crackdown head where you can summon a motorcycle at any time just for fun you know to go back you can essentially do that you know you have you have limited cash so I mean there's an ex stomach to some extent you can't do that but at any point you press down on the d-pad and look at the ground and you call in like the black market guy from whom you can buy guns vehicles and fast that's how you fast travel so you really can like I said very shortly after you start this game you'll there'll be military bases right near where you start that have the craziest choppers that have unlimited rockets and crazy planes that go really really fast and as soon as you've gone there once you can get back there anytime you want and when you fast travel you when you arrive after it loads you're in a helicopter and you jump out and skydive to the location so you can skydive directly to that chopper or directly to that plane without anyone else and just fly away cool it's just it's really fun I highly recommend it yeah I've been I've been meaning to pick that one up after we got back from packs it sounds so cool man yeah like I have no problem buying that for how much it sounds like I'll end up like it sounds like there's a lot of game basically if you were putting like a dollar it's almost too much game for people like us that have to play new games all the time right like that's and that's what I think is so great about it and I don't even feel like I need or want to finish to finish the story yeah I don't care I know I kind of just want to get in helicopter and skydive after hearing people talk about that so much that is the appeal for me it's just like seeing just appreciating this world and how big it is and how great it look I mean it really does like on the macro level the graphics in this game are just fantastic like when you're up in the sky looking down there are times when you're like I just can't it basically looks like a satellite view on Google Maps yeah and as you're skydiving down bullet diving straight down to the world you don't even really like see stuff loading in as really great level of detail stuff you see it a lot more with the structures but you know how a lot of times in games where you get far enough away from something and the way that they deal with level of detail is to decrease the number of trees right in this game they don't do that it's uh they it's they decrease the detail on the trees so when you see something really far away it looks like a fully forested hill slope and it's just when you get close closer to it the actual textures actually loads in yeah that's definitely a graphical thing that I think more and more engines are starting to rely on like yeah that was one of the reasons why modern warfare two looked so much better than modern warfare was because they had a really aggressive level detail thing and obviously halo reach has an extremely aggressive level of detail model look at these bolts I mean halo and they were lovely halo beta I think or halo three beta when it came out there's a video where these guys took a what he called a banshee up into space yes and it made me when I saw that video I was like I want to do a like a sub or a orbital drop from from a ship you know and like fall all the way to earth yep and you never really get to do that in halo it never knows there was a game that let you do that it was called section eight yeah oh right yeah that was it's appeal was that you get to drop in a pot what's funny is the way it was received was very similar to that that piece of ship fell and hit the ground it just came out on PSN actually well after that company sued South Peak for millions dollars well but anyway this is the closest I've ever felt to that to that experience that I wanted from halo after I saw that the engine was capable of this sort of thing you can't I never got so high up that I saw the you know that I felt like I went to space but you can get pretty fucking high up and you can drop and fall for many minutes before the day after a while it kind of seems like you're flying your plane straight up it kind of like starts tilting to the side and you can sort of tilt it back straight up but it starts tilting to the side again so you're like running against an invisible wall but it kind of doesn't feel like it so so what you're saying is just cause three needs to be just cause in space and earth in space and earth and with co-op they needs to be on mars with the red faction people oh yeah honestly I just want to read fiction too what I was telling Tyler is that you know when you're playing a game like this that does something that's better than any of the other games in the genre you know it's like you start adding all these things up like the perfect open world game would have the breakable environments that of red faction plus the climbing from assassin's creed plus the scale of this game and you know so you rapping hook and blah blah blah blah the shooting from grand theft auto plus the density of the graphical detail in the urban environment like grand theft auto 4 and blah blah blah blah this game just does this one thing better than any other game in the genre and now you kind of hope that people are looking at it and we'll steal that let me let me ask you this so the reason that I enjoyed red faction girl is so much as opposed to a lot of open world games that typically just kill my boner within a couple of hours was that everything you did like no matter what contributed to your progression like if you blew up this tiny structure or whatever it kills exactly how just cause it okay so that all comes down here yeah that's that's what I would want like that might get me to play the game yeah it's all about like every time you blow something up it increases the chaos and that like unlocks missions that you don't want to do anyway or not well not that you don't want to do but that I don't want to do because I just want to do more of the blowing up and my other question would be are there giant walking mechs not so far not so far but there are there are every type of jet that you could want including an up to your like a hovering jet at all so there's one that looks like a hairier but it doesn't hover yeah so I don't know if that means that's idiotic there might be one there's the worst part is when you're in a jet that's more like a I don't know it's a weird looking jet it doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with but you know pretty traditional it has that backwards facing viewing it almost feels like I want like when I hear you describe this and I think about the vehicles I want it's kind of like I want a GI Joe video game but I just want them to do it in the just cause engine like complete with grapple hook and parachute and all the stupid crap yeah yeah just with the crazy s GI Joe vehicles that only only like that game would have the you know there wasn't toys and it's clear that like they they tuned this game for fun because it's like one of the things that uh back when I was working at GameSpy in like 2001 or 2 or whenever it was that the first that when Codename Eagle came out we were super into Codename Eagle and it was like it was just because the for those who are for those who aren't listening Codename Eagle is the who are my dice that uh is the precursor to battlefield basic yes I did not yeah it was like their first game and it was a game spy got super into this and we talked about it a lot on the side at the time and and it was set in kind of World War in World War one era and uh and you could do things like you know getting jeeps and planes you know it was the whole battlefield model and uh but what made it so crazy fun is that like you could do things like uh you know jump out of your plane parachute down land on top of a blimp get in the attack the person in the blimp steal the blimp and then like go somewhere else with it and uh get in the gun in the blimp and attack people from from the air and um it's turning off and on your parachute and you could turn off on and off your parachute so it's like you could be parachuting down and aiming somebody start shooting at you and you turn it off and you turn it on again and just cause is exactly like that you have like an unlimited number of parachutes because like each time you deploy your parachute and each time and each time you decide to just drop he disconnects it and the parachute flies away but fortunately he always has he has like a bottomless bag of parachute to the point where you can do this sort of mechanic where you look at the top of a building and you shoot your grappling hook and you start moving but a fraction of a second after you begin you hit the a button and it deploys your parachute so you use that momentum from the grapple to like parachute you up and over the building and then once you're in the air of course you can grapple onto an object and basically propel yourself while you're still in your parachute and then you can like drop let go of your parachute just start following following and grapple onto a thing and zoom straight towards it so the the mechanic of like kind of moving between grappling with and without your parachute is how you learn to get around it's like what makes the the traversing the environment super fun when you're not in a vehicle and then you basically use that to get to get to your next flying vehicle and then you get in that and fuck around and just one last thing about the mechanics is that you can use your grappling hook to save you at any time so like you can jump out of a plane never open your parachute and when you get close enough to the ground grapple the ground and he just pulls himself towards the ground and you're fine yep which doesn't make any sense from a physics perspective right but it's super awesome I did fuck up once there where I was falling I fell for a really long time and I was trying to do that grapple at the end to save myself and I grappled into a building and for whatever reason on this particular time he missed and it grappled him and hit hit he smashed into the building and then like flew back with all that force that he should have actually had and bounced like you know miles and miles away Rico Rico punch landed on the ground exactly so what else have you been a guy's been playing shit um have I been playing anything else this sure doesn't sound like it I mean at a time you put into that just cause it really can take up like all of your time I mean it's like it's on everybody's hot list right now like I know when all the early reviews like we're going out like you would see on all the twitter posts like people who got early copy he's like just going a shit over it no before that uh I was playing Final Fantasy but we already spoke about that I fuck that game do you like it anymore than you did I haven't played it much more than that the other thing I was doing when we were working we've been finishing up our uh episode one of our first episode for EGM we and I don't know when that's coming out so I couldn't tell you but so I played a bunch of the gamma games that were at the gamma four party during the one button games yeah really good stuff yeah that those are really fun and then we edited a big piece about that which I guess is sort of spoiling but what we were talking about but I don't care that's what we were doing and I'm really happy without the piece turned out and we were working on that Matt and I for and the rest of our team for about the past week or so so as soon as I was done I was like that's it I'm buying just cause I want to play that game EGM subscriptions on sale now they are indeed EGM now.com Matt um well other like other than trading a lot of just cause yeah because I was true well Ryan and I have kind of been trading the controller off and uh it seems like a game that's really good for that it is uh but the other one I've been playing tilt to live on my iPhone and that's great if you have an iPhone you should have this game that actually yeah got me through a lot of my flight as well nice so far the highest score I've got on it it's 34,000 dude this it's it's crazy because like you have to unlock the better power-ups in order to get the high scores but you have to get certain scores to unlock the power-ups although I did finally unlock two more power-ups for dying 50 times like playing 50 games and dying and uh and the game the crazy thing about the game is it just has a really good sense of humor I won't get into all the details and you said Robert is Ashley who was on the show last week you said he's on the like towards the top of the leaderboards right well for for the for our region uh because it sorts it by region okay but he's towards the top of the he's like number three he's got like four million points or something like that my record is 220 something thousand it's it's and I don't know how people get that high of a score because that game gets fucking nuts I'm like kind of it maybe just the power-ups that I haven't unlocked yet help you bridge that gap um so and oh and then I played uh I played some more cliche of heroes um oh yeah I beat the shit out of the game but oh yeah you actually beat it and uh but I've been playing it on our new uh DSi XL that has uh the mega DS yep thing has a pretty nice screen I'll tell you what it's too big though I think it's too big I think it's a little too big too like it's it's it's cool if I'm playing it at home yeah it's never the DS that I would want to pack into my bag and think with me like I saw a couple those it packs like when I was talking to Jeremy Parrish before I played home he had one and it just looks fucking huge I just don't like the fact that I can't slip into my pocket I prefer the because the screens are as you've expected the same resolution as the the time your DS screens and so the pixel density is not as high well the pixel deck well per per area yes per area so games look crisper on the smaller screens so I prefer that also one of the ones we got seem to have a the the touch screen had a like a slightly yellow tint on the screen compared to the the top display which was a little annoying to me plus I don't really like the sort of wine color of the yeah so far the colors they offer if you want to just get into that of it they're bad why are you gonna hate everything Ryan my main my main thing is that I think it's heavy and especially if I were playing uh I I've been waiting for this game that Arthur just got um called again for DS which is the new game by Singh who did uh hotel desk and uh by Tecmo and apparently it's not it's it's available like it's released but game stop excruciatingly limited availability does not have it I called the game stop and they were like no game stops have this game yet at all I mean they just they sent us our review copy today and the game came out yesterday right so it's hard to find I've been waiting for it and so I started playing a little hotel desk again to you know get myself in the mood and I just can't see myself you you oh to you play hotel desk by holding the DS like a book and uh the DSi XL would be much too heavy for that I think especially if you were lying in bed and you know like you might read yeah I'm just I'm just not sure who the DSi XL is for to me apparently everyone everyone loves this thing I don't know anyone that doesn't like it you ever go into like Walmart and you're like look in the phone sections and they have those phones with like the giant numbers or the remotes that you'll see everywhere now that have like the time it's a wonder is it for elderly people I don't that is it is part of it partially I bet yeah that's what my mind goes to and my parents probably like it more to be honest and we say that it's for you know sharing with your friends or something which is bullshit yeah I mean who you I mean realistically for us when that's not how we're gonna use it yeah we're gonna play single player games on it yep but um I prefer the DSi I think the DSi old-school one is the finest piece of Nintendo hardware I like it in terms of the industrial design it is nice and I did uh and I did finish Dragon Age Origins Awakening oh yeah we're used disappointed is that by Arthur was no by Arthur was as Arthur was as Arthur was I was uh I was disappointed in the the lack of like I like dialogue trees in my RPGs and this game has very very little of them especially amongst your party members so and they also repeat their conversations a lot really I didn't get that I got that a lot really wow no that didn't happen to me at all which in fact I was in a plucky hit in fact it's kind of like I said like I said last time like I felt like they they made up for a little bit uh by not having the dialogue trees by having your party banter a lot more there's a lot more party banter so you're walking around and they're constantly saying stuff to each other and there's a lot more conflicting personalities so they're kind of at each other's throats all the time but in a fun way um I did actually enjoy the combat in this game probably more than in Origins itself I just felt like the setups were better the enemies were buried the level design was better it definitely got easier um and you know it's like I feel like it didn't really ramp up the difficulty enough compared to how much to compared to the powers that you get toward the end of the game but you do fight like more varied creatures and there are more dragons in this game which are always really cool to fight more big creatures in general two I think uh three three three three which ones like there's there's a dragon that is literally dropped on top of you right at the end right um there's the ghost dragon that it showed in the trailers right are they named maybe there only was to are they just dragons I feel like dragons all dragons should be named um the ghost dragon I feel has a title okay but no the last dragon it just it just like oh hey here you go here's a dragon oh that's oh I know what I'm thinking of you you fight like a giant armored ogre yes and that that was almost like a dragon battle because he had lots of different party smashing moves yeah except for he's a yellow right like his tier is yellow no not the one I thought oh I fought one that was yellow and uh the rogues have a new high level ability that's like if you have a fifth of your health or less they hit you and they take all of it yeah so I think I did like five or six thousand damage to something yeah I did a rogue too and like yeah that was a fun move to use but anyway I I liked dragon age origins awakening I didn't have to pay for it I got it sent to me so but you know I was thinking like is this was this worth forty dollars if I had paid forty dollars for this would I be satisfied with this experience and I think it's it's kind of a close call you know I can't absolutely go out there and say like yes you must get this if you're a dragon age fan but you know doesn't have much of the decision making carrying over stuff that we love so much between Mass Effect one and I know no no in fact it got some of it wrong like in my like in in origins like I didn't have uh I think I actually mentioned this I think we're are we approaching spoiler territory with yeah I'm asking what I'm not saying we are are we I don't think so I don't think so I'm gonna talk about your I was gonna talk about how like my party didn't have Alistair in it at the end of the game oh okay and but they but they treated it as though not only had he been in my party but he was my love interest in the last game when I got into awakening oh you were a female character I was a female character and so and so I was like uh no he was not in my party by the end of the game and he was not my love interest why is he showing up and calling me honey so maybe he was just being uh casual with you you know maybe you had gotten in a fight before you left for the keep but no there wasn't a lot of carryover like there was with Mass Effect which kind of bummed me out because like I you know when they say that your character's adventure is continuing I want my character's adventure to continue I don't want it to feel like you know something different it doesn't feel like there are very many threads connecting the two and the ones that are there are very cursory yeah but I did like but it is in a totally new land and all of the art is different a lot of the art is better so that's cool did you play it on pc right I did okay so on 360 it looks way worse really like I can we can build it up and I can show you but like there it's in the last one the textures were a little res it looks like in parts they just removed textures entirely from stuff what wow that's terrible I wonder if that's a bug the frame rate's more consistent yeah so it was that they did that but uh yeah so uh me or their entire room went to pax I mean I played some most of it wasn't from pax you went to pax yeah what did you play that wasn't from pax uh one the plane I played fucking spectral force genesis for about 12 hours how was that yes they came out a couple weeks ago although I still haven't read my review for it well you didn't well you've been busy um which is sort of like uh it's a DS game that's sort of like romance of the three kingdoms meets sieve which sounds like right at my alley when you describe it like yeah really um and it has some like it's interesting it's like you you have taxes and an economy can you be addicted to your people I mean you keep taxing them but you have very little you have very little interaction it's like more like sieve rev than sieve um I mean you you can go to war with other countries or try to persuade them to join you and look for generals to join your army and you have to balance troops between armies and those armies are good against different things like there's a rock paper scissors thing um with what your armies are good against um and some have bonuses to train but the the issue that I have is that you know there are some games that have a mechanic where it seems like you you just finally start to understand that you're like oh this could get really interesting once it develops but it never develops any more than that oh that's a bummer um that is how almost everything in this game is like it's got a lot of mechanics and a lot of different facets but they're all very very shallow yeah um it's easy to break the economy in the game which basically breaks everything else in the game what do you mean break the economy make us so you can't make any money or make us make two the the money you have is jewels and the way that you get jewels is either by sacking other countries like rating them or by like there are three different kinds of resources that you can buy and sell and the trick is to buy low and sell high and like every every month is a new turn and every month like the values of those things change so you can only have nine nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine of anything including money and right now i have nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine of basically everything including money oh i see there's only two things to spend it on either you can spend ten jewels and invest in a country to get them more troops or you can spend fifty jewels and uh build walls which are your defense so there's no reason for you to buy or sell anything no no i mean i buy and sell and basically like i could not do any commerce for months right and still have thousands of gold it seems like if if the economy is broken and you say that breaks everything it's like then why play this game at all it still has a moderate appeal um the story is idiotic yeah that it much i saw when you showed me what the characters i mean not just not not so much not just that but it doesn't tell you anything about the story when you start like it gives this very half-assed sort of explanation of the world that doesn't really explain anything that's really poorly translated sounds like final fantasy it's uh ignition i think it's the company that's publishing it shane bedding has yeah i was like it shane before we got on the plane uh i was telling Anthony that this game is awful i'm gonna find shane and and throw at him but uh uh because shane personally makes exactly it goes through ignition sounds awful i mean it's not it's not it's not awful it's just it only goes so far and after that it's just sort of repetitive and it's super long like i've been playing for 12 hours and i've taken over i think seven of 40 territories and i've had three story moments that were a grand total of five minutes each if that or no like 90 seconds each wow so i sounds like a winner it's not that i mean loser it's weird because it's all those shallow shallow mechanics sort of combined to make something that has a slightly deeper level of of intricacy but but the economy really does make it so that it seems like there's very little risk involved in anything right that's a boomer yeah um and then i was playing more battlefield today i was playing the new modes yeah i don't have the uh i haven't bought the vip pack so you don't have to you get it for free how come it said 1200 microsoft point did did you get a vip code it's in your box you just got to enter it i'm an idiot yes you are because you're missing out on at least two maps because you don't actually download anything right it's the it's the ea thing you know you bought the game yeah so i mean first of all there's two maps that you haven't been playing you're competent fuck and yeah today they unlocked new modes on two of the maps which are competent douche thank you like the val preso which is the map that was squadron that was rushed before which is like yeah it's the jungle one with with uh like the little river crossings and stuff yeah it's got yeah it's got the hill in the middle and the bases on either side and then the no because it starts at the the russian spawn and then it slowly works its way around the the conquest points and then the bases so there's like five different sections hell yeah um it's really good it's usually really fast and it's really hard to defend but it feels like you can get something good going and and really get a good fight um and then they did conquest on africa harbor huh yeah um which is the mode that starts off it's it's like it's the most deserty map yeah yeah with a shitload of tanks on one end extremely long yeah long and it is it feels broken for conquest because one side always starts from high ground you're right it makes their way down yep and that is really fucking hard to defend against in fact uh i've been i've been upping my my recon points because i haven't been online and playing with friends so like i've been playing recon because i that's a good solo class and uh i like that map when i'm when i'm the attackers because i have the high ground when i'm playing conquest anyway so i can totally see how that would be a problem yeah and then so i mean when i'm playing russian at least that will end quickly if you're the attackers and you're arming mcoms with conquest it takes forever yeah and if you're the defenders you're just going to die over in or if you're the people that spawn on the defender side right you're just going to die over and over again it seems weird that they rolled this content out like like a month after the game came out no they timed it very specifically with against the stimulus or this month i don't suppose that this unlock happened to get rid of the fucking conquest klaxons that happened no of course not why would it do that uh that you know what that i i whatever i can just turn my volume down the things that i'm pissed off about that they still haven't fixed still comes down to helicopters are too powerful have unlimited resources like like everything else like if you're on the ground you run out of rockets you run out of bullets if you're in a helicopter you never run out of rockets or bullets can the person in the helicopter sit there and permanently repair it from within to uh no they can't repair it from within but they'll just like land helicopters can fly outside of the range that everyone else on their team can walk to you can yeah every time i've flown outside the area it's like you're leaving the combat yeah there's an area that they can't fly into but they have a wider field that they can fly to which seems to include spawns like the the starting spawn for the enemy team so on certain maps like the helicopters can just if they take your helicopter they just dominate you with two helicopters at your spawn yeah for the entire game typical battlefield sounds yeah and that wouldn't be such a problem but there's no really good effective eight n_a_ aircraft options for engineers mm-hmm which are the only ones that are any vehicle really um is there like good emplacements no and all the emplacements suck yeah the emplacements all die fast fuck all for damage they die quickly and they're really limited as to where how the angles at which you can target things yeah they are they're really and like an apache you can take so much machine gunfire like they take damage from in place machine guns but they take so much of it that i mean your best bet is to like try and hit it with a tracer dart and hope yeah you know you can somebody can put a rocket into it the tracer darts can actually be really effective because like the the thing with the apaches and stuff is that they actually have to they have to slow down a little bit at least in order to get good shots on people you would think and if there's a tracer dart on them then somebody who's like has a good angle on that and is good with the timing of the firing you can do you can definitely take them down i've seen it happen i mean i've taken down helicopters with just like flat out beginning rpgs so oh you can take it down with tanks too that's awesome except tanks can't aim high i'm gonna say they can really you have to be really far away but you can't be battlefield you'd have to put the tank on uh like an incline yeah so and i mean the mortars are still overpowered simply if for no other reason than because people will just bring down buildings around em comms which destroys them so it seems like the vip thing introduced the maps but it didn't do anything about balancing it no they they released the patch and it had they haven't rebalanced anything they also haven't nerfed the m60 or the m19 11 yet um and there's like the whole thing where like you know if you're trying to arm an m comms station all in times you're switching kits and like you know the ea i mean the dice responses that you can hold down the button like hold down the b button as you're approaching which would be like square or something or circle for yes i mean they just got some balancing to do and granted they've still got the benefit of the doubt for most of it because i'm still having more fun with it modern warfare and also like yeah like they've been way better about patches and server maintenance than than infinity ward has been about balance patches for modern warfare well sweet we've got a we've got a place more than arthur because like i'm i'm missing having people to play i would love to play i'm a baby at that game i would love to suck at it but it's a little i would definitely go back and give in some games um it's been a while it's been about a month since i've played i'm just curious as to i feel like it might be getting to the point where there it might be more frustrating for new people to come in because now more and more people have unlocked magnum ammo oh is that like is that like full metal jacket basically yeah it's much more damaging it does it does i don't know how much damage but it seems like it does double damage like i kill shit way easier that sounds like what i want in that game well yeah but you have to be like rank 14 or something to unlock it balls that's i mean that's the thing i i am locked today i want to get ranked 10 i i walked it today and i have 20 hours a game and multiplayer hmm man jeez i just yeah i just can't commit to playing that long in any of these games like why can't you commit right because there's so many other things to play because you've got a fucking girl friend and a life and a job no i mean it's it's it's literally that i try to play everything i have done those things that i care about which turns out to be a lot of things today was the first time in a long time that i had that i sat down and played it and that's because i was doing it for work right like i'd like to play more i just that's fucking i'm also i'm just not that good at it but it's still fun so i mean you don't have to be an awesome shot to be useful though which is the nice thing no i know i i i saw like uh the hurt rocker the hurt locker recently and uh and i played some of the single player last night just taking a little break and uh man there was a stage in there where i felt like they really captured sort of some of this some of the attention that the hurt locker captured there's like this stage in the camp in the campaign where there's like a lot of sand in your face and you're like doing all this sniping shit and uh and exactly what you're telling me yeah but i mean you know i feel like you're not running the hurt locker for me guess i no i don't but just in general like uh with this game like i i'm going to the single player like just kind of whenever like i'm not trying to it's good poop socket and it's so fucking good yeah it's a lot but i like it a lot better than modern warfare single player the single player is very good the whole time i'm playing is yeah i mean like you know i was you know i was doing shit like like watching the body language of our squad or like watching what they're doing you know and just like you know just really felt like i was there and the action and i love it um sorry we're doing predator sounds i also played lost planet two multiplayer and prose battle shrimp cons everything else we should just tell we should just direct them to your video preview i do have a video preview on igN and a written preview cool and as much as i know it pain some of you to go to igN i could use the clicks let's get arthur let's we're we're joking today in the office that we should have a clicks ticker that says like aegis up 10k like just ticking wait you did i was i fucking playing battlefield when you had this conversation yeah yeah yeah that would be great like the stock market ticker exactly and we can make bets against people like against how previews we're going to do internally can you short sell on preview impressions they're like the guy egos is down today yeah now gaiegos is actually the the champion of igN's oh shit gaiegos is up so i had it was inspiring so it's on the record climb um word on igN all it takes is just shooting it at the top story on the front page and it's guaranteed guaranteed winner for the day yeah yeah i didn't get any of that fucking placement today thank well mine was a first look not the not only that but my interview yeah we got buried like within half a day yeah um um so let's let's let's put packs yeah packs i want to hear about packs i want to know by cariously since i didn't get to go why don't we take a break really quick and then oh wait you're about packs i'm just kidding i ain't gonna talk did you have any no fuck it let's take a break i i gotta be that's that's actually kind of what i figured yeah so for towers bladder we'll be right back so ways is the case when you were enjoying taking on all the cars that surround you oh any sign of life you find wanna share with me tonight oh hey looks like we're back sounds like guns pissing on us yeah right now we are being peed on by god aka rain um so we're back and we're here to talk about packs packs was uh something me Tyler and Arthur attended hello and thank you to everyone that came to the igN rebel fm geek box meetup several that also emailed me i thought that yeah i thought that went really well and it was really nice meeting everyone you guys were awesome and it was nice to see you guys all getting along with each other too and only one fatality yeah one person ended up leaving that bar i don't know the one person ended up being carried out of that that's what i mean not two feet yeah damn they hit their head dragged outside throughout that's the last we saw them wow um hope you had a good time he didn't appear to be rebel if i'm listening to the back of his night jam person so dude the igN crew was getting prong yeah igN people were getting a little insane they were getting snot shoveling drunk yeah snot shoveling yeah i love that freeze that's good packs was uh interesting right man it was fun did the swine flu go around this time i mean some people have talked about getting sick but they had they had uh they had Purell stations at like escalators and also at the foot of a lot of game demos okay i know that the g4 guys were all carrying Purell i was carrying Purell and it's awesome but yeah i thought the the show was really good um we didn't get to see as many like big i thought the atmosphere was very packed okay yeah the show itself was kind of underwhelming the floor was really small like uh probably only like a third of the size of the pack seattle at best and it was split between two rooms with like a wall in the center so it made it even feel smaller and even what was there there was a lot of floor space dedicated to bullshit yeah like uh like gunner optics oh man they had a huge push for those glasses that are supposed to enhance game like there's this big ass area for power gig like with a van and a bunch of empty space around them where no one was paying any attention power gig is is a the real guitar yeah we play like a rock band with a roof that can turn into a real guitar right right um but uh that was Ryan's impression of a guitar dying oh that was my impression of a transforming sound that's transforming into a real guitar yeah it was a real guitar all the sudden yeah the highlight of packs for me and i think probably for Arthur and Tyler at least was seeing the XBLA games that was like the coolest thing yeah i mean i i went to some some good panels but you like the panels were really fucking hard to get into yeah it lots just like an hour to an hour and a half before it just wasn't gonna happen jesus yeah so and it was there and the keynote it was like yeah he was definitely there keynote uh with me always and when there's only one set of footprints is when he carried me but uh but sorry but uh but yeah so the XBLA games were really cool like Arthur got to check out hydrophobia which i was jealous about because i really wanted to see that yeah hydrophobia um it's promising i don't know that i go so far as to say i'm excited yet but it's definitely promising is it about being afraid of water uh i i heard someone say that yeah the main character is afraid of water like about like being underwater crushing water stuff like that but there was so little narrative in what i played that it's hard to sort of figure out if that's the case hmm um what exactly is it because i think a lot of people that's i don't even know so it was should i premise or technology even no what type of game it really is like i think that's unclear like an action adventure um it's sort of like uncharted in some ways but much more linear but the way it works is it's procedurally generated uh the water is all procedurally generated the fire a lot of the content is just sort of dynamic like procedurally dynamically created so there's it's going to be a small game like maybe 600 arthur pick one procedural or dynamic i mean those are those are those aren't necessarily contradictory right i'm just kidding i don't think but uh it's small i thought the game was like a long game i mean it's gonna it's they're saying it's gonna probably be around six to seven hours but the downloads should only be 600 to a thousand megabytes and so the crux of the gameplay is that you're just trying to escape each room like each room is like a puzzle no you're trying to escape from different light different levels of this yacht that's being sunk by this extremist environmental group it's in the future oh man i hate extremist environmental groups it sounds like the Poseidon adventure or something it is sort of like the Poseidon adventure meets minority report but um cool like you'll there'll be rooms full of water and you'll have to open them and then areas will flood and you'll have to swim and right it'll be time to take it because you're we i assume you can suffocate um it's it it could be something really interesting yeah it says it comes out on summer they're not sure when it comes out um they haven't they're they're talking with microsoft about it i'm pretty sure it's 360 exclusive all the games that we saw for exbale they were 360 exclusive um but i look forward to seeing more of it cool yeah i checked out uh hydro thunder is that exciting is that a game you played back in the day apparently that game was hot shit back in the day our game game you know yeah i know of it yeah and one apparently was a big dreamcast game as well for oh was it i uh i never played it so seeing it on exbale was like my first time and it has gotten like a graphical upgrade as well it's been completely really yeah they've done the read on the levels and stuff because now water physics are such a big deal that like and the waves the way they work because it wouldn't work to the old levels is what i gathered and so the coolest part about it for me though is like yeah it's an arcade racer we've all played a bunch of you know arcadey style racers including ones on water but uh the coolest part about it for me was that it's an exbale game and it has four player split screen local now cool it seems really cool to me including like a battle style mode and you can take even if like you have four friends at your house and you're playing split screen you can take those four friends and play online with other people in any combination oh cool so that alone it makes it kind of like a not like a cool sounding like party game like the type of game that you had friends that don't really play that many video games over it's like the type of thing you can pop in and be like oh we can do this together and also it's a 360 exclusive because when midway went tits up microsoft bought the rights right makes sense so i don't know that seemed like it could be cool but the cooler exbale game i got to see was the the dishwasher vampire smile oh nice you know the sequel to dishwasher yeah yeah which was really weird when i was watching because you know as we were sitting there previewing people would be like oh is this an expansion or is this a remake of your first one like a lot of people didn't it didn't seem to click in their head like there's a sequel oh this should be a game that got a sequel to begin with right yeah yeah i just don't think that clicked for a lot of people the dishwasher and uh you know i i never played the dishwasher beyond the first few levels back when we were at one up yeah like i never played the rest of the game did you no that's the thing is i i think for a lot of people it's like especially a sequel where it's like trying to do more narrative stuff yeah like i think that's like something people didn't really necessarily like when it comes to the dishwasher yeah it's just one of those things that i i meant to get and then just never had the time to right the new one looks really good i mean it's an all new engine it does look way prettier oh is it yeah it's a new engine it looks prettier and you get to play as like two characters and the characters are like totally over the top right you're still playing as a dishwasher but then you also play as like a sister if i think it's like suki or something like that and like when you play as her she'll like one second have a chainsaw arm and then get an upgrade where she now has a chain gun arm and she almost uses it kind of like a dual stick to shoot you know oh cool it's it's like everything that people want out of that game still you know very violent very over the top and still like really fast and and one of the things that always i think caught everyone's eyes early on as far as when it was an indie game on xbox instead of the xbla release was that just that the way it looks you know it still has that very like black white contrasting very like against one another really too extreme i don't know it seemed like it did uh did you play any of the indie games um xbox indie games uh no i didn't play any of them that were there i played charlie murder which is the other game that uh it sounds like that one though is like so up i'm losing my hands around too much it sounded like that one yeah i mean it's also from scott right yeah and basically it's not even a game yet like it's there is stuff to do but he hasn't decided what he wants to do with it like whether he's going to finish it and put it out as a game on xbox live or indie games or or other platforms quote unquote um i mean at one point he said he wanted to just get the music out there because he wrote and performed all of the music in it which is like this punk music which is actually pretty competent i mean especially given a lot of the punk music i've heard over the last decade um but it's sort of like a final fight game with some minor double dragon hints here and there yeah it's very distinctively his art style with this punk music blaring in the background as they try to as they beat up all these people that are working for the death metal band that's still the lead singer's girlfriend or something so did you feel that the art was very distinctively his because most people that walked up when i was there were like oh looks like casual crashes to them like the i didn't think it looked like castle crashes i thought it looks more sketchier um more sort of dirty uh and i in my opinion that's how dishwasher looks and i made a game with zombies and it looks yeah that's true but uh we also played battle block theater oh wow how's that yeah it seems like a fun party game good it's so hard question mark no it's hard to describe it's like smash brothers brawl with objectives with combined with super mario brothers sounds kind of good um like smash brothers but yeah that's a really good way smash brothers ball almost combined with like the super marios thing where it was like trying to knock over shells and kick them after you've knocked them over like you know the old mario brothers versus it's a lot like that and a lot in some of the ways they showed a new mode like last year i don't know if you played it last year it packs but they had a uh there are three modes on display this time there was the mode where you're trying to touch as many blocks as you can and there's a brief period when you touch a block where it's spinning where someone else can touch it for their color and take it um there's a mode where there's a floating whale that's spitting out gold that you need to grab and then you jump up to a floating safe and it deposits it nice and when you bounce on someone it takes their you take their gold and you can take it up and now there's a capture the flag mode sort of which is like everyone has a soul and you jump on them and collect it and you collect points as you have it and that's how i collect souls yeah well i mean you and everybody else and then you jump on top of them and uh to get your soul back so it's it's really hectic and weird but i could see spending a lot of time with a bunch of friends yeah again it seems like castle crushers like it's going to be another one of those games it's like oh we're all here what we do except even easier to just play quickly yeah yeah yeah cool um i played shank i played that at last pack it is exactly the same as it was last oh really huh we uh i did tell what's do you remember the guy's name um i told the the main dude behind it that uh that the only comment i would make on it other than it's awesome because it is like robert roger you guys the movie or the game robert roger you guys this movie the game is that i kept hitting the right stick to try to dodge yeah while i was doing everything because it felt like that kind of game even though it was in 2d yeah um i get that did you did any of you guys end up seeing monday night combat that was when a lot of people came away talking we i went we went to see it i didn't get to play it right i mean like it's like an ex-bla right team fortress style sort of game yeah i mean like the cool thing about the the games that were there was that there were a few live arcade games that like no one really knew of like monday night combat reach they announced monday night combat a couple months ago and the trailer caused some buzz but really i don't even remember seeing it right this is the first time it's been seen um but yeah i mean it's like basically like uh right when the floor opened i was walking around and just walked right to the booth and sort of asked the guy about it and like he won me over just from like on paper which is basically he told me was like team fortress 2 plus uh league of legends or defense of the agents and i was just like wow it's fucking brilliant yeah that's a good idea so you're like playing as team fortress i've never even heard of this first person combat well it's third person combat third person combat there are also creeps pushing forward cool and you got to make sure your creeps take the enemy base you can't take the enemy base your creeps have to and then it's like good idea yeah and so it and then it has the six different classes and it almost kind of sounds like when you describe it another way it sounds like it's like almost like a star wars battle front if star wars battle front was played with creeps that could take the bases yeah yeah almost in that way and then like but but to me it seems like the class base system is like played a lot into it and yeah do you level up do you find it because that's that's right yeah that that's the guy told me he was like you know it's got that whole thing where as you level up and around your character around get stronger and stuff so sort of like shadow run i guess or counter-story yeah you're dota i mean dota and all those games that you love are all enemies and stuff unfortunately they were doing like a tournament thing uh the day that i tried to go play it and so like i couldn't get a spot but i mean i mean i can just say like the graphics look really good for an xbox level okay game number one i feel like that's going to be something less and less it's going to be irrelevant yeah it's coming less and less of a thing i mean uh i mean with this game it looks really good their textures and lighting and stuff i mean it all looks like very bright colors it looks like think like uh future american gladiators yeah sort of cool and it's supposed to be like this big sports thing but like you know i mean there there were a lot of games there that we had seen already but that was one that surprised me and probably stuck out with me the most and um other than Civ 5 that one in breach were the ones i wanted and breach yeah that was another one that i saw for the first time there we uh Tyra and i played crackdown too yeah how was that in was it everything we hoped for i've still never been able to get my hands on the game so here's the problem with crackdown two at pax east they're showing competitive multiplayer mmm no exactly the reason ryan's ryan's sad lament pretty much something about play that game ever no i it plays like crackdown except for multiplayer there was no multiplayer on the original one no it's like why that game was not a game that need multiplayer just needs four player co-op i i mean it's it controls identically like there's still the delay in jumping that makes it feel like you're really building up a bunch of strength to jump over a building yeah it seems like instead of that they should have just let people play for like five minutes with like a max level character just stick around maybe it's not ready for that although that would be a little scary when we saw the game at that x10 what a yeah x10 event they were like yeah part of the reason we're not letting you play this and i'm playing it instead is because we just haven't had time to make a stable build that's that we can let people play we're afraid we're going to go somewhere that will make the world explode yeah like we are seriously down to the wire in this game we're going to finish it it's going to be good but you know we're not making disconcerting considering it's coming out in july no i mean it's an open world game you know lots of shit can happen all the you know we we know this all the polish and and bug fixing everything the games happens in like the last you know quarter of its developments what i saw played of course was probably the same script that he ran through 20 other times before when you know when he did it but i had very little to be worried about when i saw it i was like yep it's going to be cracked down it's going to be sweet it's got all the new stuff you want to be in there it looks really really good i mean graphically it's um i mean when you compare it to the other one it's uh i mean they they they really did step it up in that respect multiplayer did look cool with the jump pads and stuff like that right i mean yeah i mean but that stuff's in single player too yeah so i mean i don't know it it seems a lot like what you know arthur was talking about with lost plant too it's just not like you don't go to lost plant too from multiplayer go for it like like it sounds badass because co-op same thing yeah yeah same thing here just give me some give me some buddies to play with yeah i can hear that definitely you know when does that game come out does anyone know oh yeah it's a lie this summer yeah cannot wait so arthur just said god weren't you listening um i did you what did you think of sieve five tyler you know that you've seen it um two peepers right did i know man it was kind of like hexagons hexagons uh it was funny situation because like man i was really hung over from the night before from our meetup and uh dude just i felt like such i felt such like shit man um but then sieve five made it all better well you know like okay so i see walk and it's like this like mini theater and it's like these little chairs if you ever been to any kind of like bullshit cafeteria in the the back of the chair is really low you know it's like the iKEA chair the anthony sort of sitting in so i walked in and i plopped down man in the posture i adjusted i adopted for the whole demo was i i leaned down solo to where my head was on the back of the the low chair so imagine anthony if you were leaning solo that your height was that's how i said all the time dude and there and there was uh you know there was this guy that you know i had met at pax before he was like trying to talk to me the whole time and like basically my reply is to all of his like questions yeah i was sorry dude i'm hung over and then and and even the same like i was going through the whole sieve five demo and just like you know the most excited i could get was like uh oh so i got my head like fireworks are going off i got super excited after seeing it at gdc i know you're a sieve fan so yeah man i was telling anthony on the on the plane around home i was like man i'm thinking about it non-stop because to me the to me the most exciting thing is how much uh strategy is coming into a place this time and just the fact that they're they're not allowing you to stack units on cities now so that pushes all of the warfare into bigger planes basically yeah in the front lines the fence and and like when i would place cities defend themselves which is super cool yeah yeah like when i would place it for a lot i would strategically place my uh troops onto the different land types according to like what kind of bonuses like next to a river and stuff like that but it didn't come into play that much but now it does big time and like you can't stack units at all so not not even just city tiles yeah so it's like you have to maintain like a front line and a back line you know it just to to me it seems like the strategic and the sort of cultural uh sort of levers are really coming together in this you know yeah awesome and so that i mean and and and it looks beautiful too the graphics are really fun yeah that helps so did you you guys didn't see xbox indies stuff at all they they have very little there i mean they had limbo there but but i saw limbo limbo is uh had limbo um which i i don't know i don't i don't know if we've talked about limbo on this show before i mean i i might have briefly it's a game like an indium though that's the next thing yeah no limbo has been signed to a publisher yeah it is it has now but it was yeah well one point i'm sure the indie developers would strongly argue the case that once you've got like a big name publisher for sure what is indy you're not indy enough and we're more indy than you are when i was talking to one of the guys at gdc they actually said like limbo has been in development for like six years or something yeah like the tech for it because it's like this whole they have this whole procedural animation it is really cool dude the animation is fucking slick the game looks really good and the sound is amazing um so it's kind of like a you know i was describing to anthony it's sort of um a silhouetted nightmare boy in his blob and the way you're sort of solving puzzles in the environment except you don't have a blob right except you don't have a blob i don't know exactly how i feel about this game because it's a it's it's very trial and error there's no way there's literally no way you could make it through your first time without dying like the game death is part of the gameplay it's part of the learning it's part of the learning curve feels kind of cheap and then beyond that it's because once you know how to solve any of the puzzles you'll just know it it's really only gonna it kind of sounds like you know how you feel about this game it's beautiful i don't want to hate on it because it's indie but this game kind of blows it's not that it blows it's that i don't know but this it just feels kind of cheap touches on like what i i had a conversation with one of my really good xbox life friends that i met up with that packs quality beats whoa whoa and it's 84 and uh and and we were talking about like the difference between like fun and experience like one of my favorite games of all time is out of this world and that game is not really that fun i was just gonna say that like that that that like limbo reminds me of that game in that like out of this world like you die over and over and over again a hundred percent stronger and not even fun like i don't i wouldn't even say that game is fun at all i don't know why i thought it fun but then it was like and then like once you know that game you can go straight through it and it's like this super cinematic voice they're squeaking i think it's a f*cking cat toy continue my count is also what was turning on the sink a second i go you know it's it's that thing like ryan i mean i i totally see what you mean like you know all all i saw is probably this you know one level they did they demoed at gc so it's it stands to you know who knows how it's gonna play out but yeah yeah i played a lot of it i feel like yeah yeah the the ryan got it is an idea of judge finalist version was pretty long okay so let me ask you a question limbo is rubbing you kind of the wrong way because it's so repetitive and because it requires so it's super linear so what is the difference between that and super meat boy which it seems like you really like super meat boy is like berry because that's a huge part of that yeah but super meat boy you can see your way through every time it's not trial and error well isn't that i mean you're supposed to die in limbo it's a it's a the it's about the like a mechanics being good in uh super meat boy in super meat boy you have just crazy minute control over you know the length of your jump and you're on the edge of your your seat the whole time whereas in in limbo the mechanics work the same every time there's no give and take to it at all so all you do is like push you're like oh i need to push this like log into this river before i walk over it okay and like it's going to play out the same way every time as soon as you know how to do it the mechanics aren't interesting yeah that's that that's exactly what i'm getting out like like when i'm talking about the difference between like a fun game and an experience game you know limbo is an experience game super meat boy is a fun game okay the thing is that like there are games that are fun to experience where where you can have different experiences in them if you're playing them whereas this game there's one experience to have either well no there are several experience there are many many different ways to die and they actually make that kind of fun by making it super violent when you die right yeah because dying is such a big part of the game your little boy will get stabbed and shot and beaten and smashed and every little thing every little way really what you want right it reminds me of like the way like uh death animation and lemings or something the way they're they're kind of varied and it's sort of it sucks but it's also like yeah at least that was kind of funny yeah it may sound like i'm hating on this game and i'm not like it's it's the type of game where i'll pro i'm sure i'll play it once through i don't think it sounds like you're hating on it you just haven't enjoyed what you play and i think that's not that i don't let me that's what i'm trying to say is it's not that i don't enjoy it i just don't i think there are much but much better games out there and if this game didn't look as good as it does people wouldn't care at all well again that sounds it sounds like a saying valid but when i'm but that's because it is an experience game like that's the same way i felt like when i when i you know why i loved out of this world so much you know i i could care less about a platformer that was a more traditional looking platformer uh from that era you know but out of this world looks so differently and just like animated differently everything the great thing about limbo is the is that it tells a story visual without it's all visual visual in game with no words same thing is out of this world it's all it's all like it's all visual storytelling yeah and that's what it does really well it's just that and so on some level i wish there was a little bit more uh eight player agency in there somewhere and i wish that you had you know this story could change like but there's not it's very super linear it's really straightforward you run from left to right yes and the levels don't even feel like the end it's just like one continuous level and to go back to like the super meat boy comparison like with uh uh with limbo like you'll walk up to something and you'll die because like you haven't seen this kind of thing and you don't know what to do with it and it'll just die but in super meat boy you look you're it's like i know i need to jump from here to there and you try over and over and over again and die over and over and over and over and over again spinning saw that's hard to mistake is a bad thing right something you don't want it boys a skill base game right it's about learning the controls and learning to do the platforming just right yeah yeah limbo limbo is a trial by death uh kind of puzzle experience so it's like an adventure game makes it kills you over and over again it's a very linear adventure game out of this world is the best comparison okay it just sounds like this limbo game it just sounds like there's no way to beat it without failing over it's almost like and once you then learn it it's not like you learn it and you overcame it through skill it's just that oh now i know exactly where i need to jump it takes a while of you play through the game for a while before you get to a puzzle where you're like you solve it you're like oh okay i feel smart for solving this puzzle it's like a multiple choice to us where they slap you in the face every time you get around you go see yeah like generally speaking you'll figure out how to do something and you don't really feel that smart for having solved it there was this one particular puzzle where um this is the opposite example where you have to raise these kind of doors and it involves pulling these ropes on a pulley system through this i don't know it's hard to explain but basically once i solved that puzzle i was like okay that that was a great puzzle and i feel like i it took some thought to figure out how to do this thing right but generally it's like oh the spider stabbed me damn it okay what oh of course the spider just stabbed me because this item that they left right here like right here in front of me i just need to move it to the side five feet and then boom puzzle solved that's it that's how the game works usually so i don't know if you when you get much later into the game there'll be more of those puzzles that feel good that make you feel smart for solving them rather than the ones where it's like well duh i use this thing that's right here with this thing and boom solve let's move forward what else did uh did we see it packs that we aren't talking about um that it i so so there were like two games that i sort of looked at from afar didn't really play though it's like breach it was one of them yeah the game from the guys that had the canceled six days in Fallujah it's not canceled they said it's finished yeah yeah it just doesn't have a publisher oh i thought i saw there's a cancel thing oh it was canceled as far as it could name konami pulled out of publishing yeah yeah so like point it's in limbo um bringing it back around but uh but but we're gonna take a break reaches xbox live arcade game as well and it's sort of a modern combat live arcade game um deathmatch only first person shooter and it uses like rainbow six cover oh you mean current warfare current warfare stuff yeah yeah so first person cover uh you know it's like it's like a six called after third person it's in first person but when you hit cover it pulls out to third great i've been wanting more games to do that yeah like another rainbow six game that's good and like the other cool thing that like so the other big claim to fame for breach is it has uh destructible environments somewhere in between the way bad company and red faction gorilla do destructible environments it's kind of like in between so you mean more than battlefield more than battlefield but less than less than red faction but they did show that you could take whole buildings you can yeah yeah depending so like that's kind of nuts yeah so i like it but uh you know it's it's still like you know the ground and stuff has like card angles it's not like i mean but it isn't it is an xbox like right right yeah it's not like it's going to be a four retail release it's crazy that you guys because i obviously did not go to packs east and i did not i haven't been looking at previews so a lot of these games like even the titles everything is totally new to me but the they know but i mean what you're describing generally they don't sound like 2d platformers and puzzle games and the stuff that you usually associate with live arcade it's like you sound like games that are maybe not i feel like sixty dollar retail products now you know they have to have a single player component they got to have a campaign they got to have a multiplayer component you know they look like what we expected at a single player games on ps2 a lot of times that's crazy it's crazy how that's how much of these games costing i i imagine that the the quote unquote expensive ones will probably be like 15 bucks they were saying breach was going to be 15 that's great i'm totally down with paying $15 for a good death match game or whatever yeah and and monday night combat man like that one to be like said i mean it looks solid and and i i have to imagine the reason why they're not no one's talking at least dates is that everybody's hoping that microsoft will court them for the summer of game yeah i mean everyone even everybody's like hoping anyone in a bunch of people i think it's submitted it's just so crazy though that's become such a big thing that i think it's just that you get such a prominent placement on live it's the only time that microsoft really puts the muscle behind those games that they deserve no because they they they're they're starting to do more now don't they do it three times a year or twice well i mean this is the first time they're they're like the block party yeah they did the block party yeah that's true jesus fucking christ they cats are getting cron today i thought they didn't want in the fall as well but i could be wrong about that i think they might do a games of fall type thing but yeah but either way the games of summer when that summer of arcade that's always a big big one i wish there was a you know when you're flipping through your stupid xbox live menus and there's a spotlight and then my xbox and buy this video crap and buy this you know if you're about to ask if they can do an xbox live arcade one they do several no that's not what i mean okay i just mean like right i i wish i could customize my spotlight section so that the only tell them showed me tell me about xbala games yeah like i want to know what the new xbala games are this week and i want to know what the new games are this week yeah just like show me what i don't care about playing left and then with fallout boy seriously drop all that it's crap don't care i just want to know what the new games are and i want it to be the first thing i see when i turn on yeah it's like all that stuff is probably successful for microsoft xbox live but i want to be able to customize my menu to get rid of it is it successful because it's the only thing there no it's successful because there's a lot of people out there that really love fallout boy yeah so you know i just i mean i feel like it should be more customizable like the the the design of it is to be modular so that thing can swap in and out like a web browser you know like the the fact that you press up and you ship through the menus the way you do and you press left and right in the way that the like everything's just boxes doesn't matter how many fucking boxes there are and how many columns and rows like and they have as many well it's like the cross media bar that means it you know exactly it's the same endlessly expandable so and they and they have like as many hooks as they want into your system so if they did that they could keep track of how people are customizing things and they could gather that data so that they could market better like little things it takes i really don't like how far and how many clicks it takes me to get to my game library or whatever yeah if i want to play game room which is another thing i've been playing it's kind of cool but uh you know it's i have to i feel like i'm i have to dive deep into a menu to get there instead of it just being like boom it's right here we could do a whole segment on the columns of the current yeah it's just true um anything else you guys any any other patch shenanigans that went down they're moving locations next year they do yeah did they do the uh the concerts and stuff yes did you go to any of them no because we were having our meetup and then i went to the retronauts panel and then i went to the one-up meetup uh bomber dude dude when after our meetup i man i must have been so drunk i walked home all by myself i really man i did not want to the one-up meetup where more people brought you more drinks no i didn't go to the one-up meetup yes you did no i didn't i thought i saw him there no i didn't he stayed at the other place longer than we did i know you were younger i see i stayed drinking and i was high on life right and uh and yeah and i i told like wandered like through the mall by myself dude all the way back that's also um it was a good trip i'm glad to hear it i'm sorry i couldn't have gone yeah i was really depressed about my going actually it seemed like it was a fun show and they're like all my friends were there yep maybe you can go if this next time and also get your tattoo hotel room yeah that'd be awesome wow on that night we'll take a break and then we'll come back with uh some letters once they know it was that's why we do what we do oh you're just wrong you're just wrong you're just wrong you're just wrong you're wrong you're not wrong [Music] okay so we got so we're back and we got this uh package from this guy named Calder Ross i'm calling him out by both names because i think that's okay in the sense he sent us this rad like rebel of him wire-framed logo art he made oh nice but i'll post a picture of him like twitter but uh he said we can figure out whatever we want to do with it currently it's on my desk i'll fucking night fight someone for it it is awesome it is really cool dude i gotta see this he also sent me a wireframe space marine helmet from warhammer 40k so i just wanted to tell him thank you again because that was like the highlight of like me coming in today was like this random package and it was like beat the shit and it had no return address which is always like sketchy right someone sent you anthrax or yeah or could be anthrax i don't know why immediately go to anthrax all right so that's that's the story the first actual letter i got is from uh david in iowa city so it's dated he says given the success of bioware games like mass spec 2 in the apparent popularity of the relationship aspects of them um do you guys see dating games ever being widely made and or being successful in the west no it's funny um all right i disagree it's funny he brings it up because like i had the thought like wow if someone like made an xna game that was like dating but with other xbox like like you go on an xbox live date with other real people but this is like a thing right so you're saying someone's done this with xbox live have they you're talking about that service well this yeah it's like a paid thing it's really looserly but like oh that ever happens to where it's uh you're talking about gamer crush yeah but if ever happens where it's like a mutual thing like two people coming you know and like coming together and like hey two people that one's good too two people getting together if it's like hey let's meet up for a day and watch like i don't know uh fucking dirty jobs on netflix or something right yeah but then can't you just already yeah you can already do that yeah but i mean this would be like there there to have to be an interface um i'm talking about meeting people that aren't on your friend's house i think that you're talking about interaction with people yeah the thing is he's talking about like dating gapan with like yeah dating things you know on a fake date with a girl and it's almost like an interesting thing i'm just saying like let's take it a step further let's take those ideas and move it to our avatars no are they're saying no that's not what he's talking about because you're talking about selling a service and he's talking about selling a game make the game the service no what what because then it's not a game anymore then it's just a way to meet people what i like what if it's a game where you date and you play games together that's what i'm saying yeah but that's not what he's asking about he's asking yeah we're now we're talking about dude we're taking his no no fucking seed of an idea and growing it into a money tree i don't think i to go back to his initial question i i don't think that i would be super down with the dating game the way that the japanese have dating games but i like the idea of you know whatever relationships being a part of games that's one of the things i like about heavy rain was you know totally that aspect of it it's not one of the major which i just want to know in the beginning did you kiss your wife i kissed my wife in the beginning of the game it's such an aside i fucked it up that's all you fucked it up how did you fuck it up because i fuck up everything like man because i always fuck up my relationships man it's a virtual girl i can't make it out of that kisser when do you kiss her it's in the very beginning you come up and you put your hands behind her and she turns around and then it yeah and then i it wasn't paying enough attention and it pops up a thing and if you do it you can kiss her and if you don't she's like we don't have time for this and so just like real life i waited to i hesitated too long if i can miss my chance so then i'm then i tried to walk back up to her like re-initiate re-initiate and she was like did i have an any of it okay you were in the friend zone yep more towards a possibility where games can have more of that sort of serious interaction with characters unless shooting i think the mass effect is a good example simply because i spent way more time doing stuff and talking to people and and investigating things and i did shooting at things in mass effect too right um but i don't i don't think that we're we're ever going to be at a point where you can have a romantic comedy a nice box live in game form i don't want a game where the goal is to get with a girl or whatever which i think is what the goal of the dating games in japan are yeah there was that game here in america it was probably a shoot larry well no i mean actually in i was even more pathetic in yeah but in japan actually there's a whole segment of the games they're not you know they're not i don't know what to call them they're not risque they're not r-rated or whatever they're just like dating and it's like the goal is to get somebody to be your steady girlfriend or four had some of that yeah had some of that yeah but but the thing but the thing is is that like i think uh i i just want games to have deeper longer lasting relationships in general i mean they they very very rarely touch on anything like family you know it's like what if what if your character had a spouse and children at some point what if you know like what if you know like what if you went on from uh you know like take my character in dragon age you know like what if uh what if she actually like married alistair or whatever and then they had to deal with the royal family and that was what the the next couple games entailed you know i mean like the game is never supposed to do stuff like yeah but fable two is supposed to do stuff like that too fable ones like i mean but they've shown i can why it was they've been showing that stuff from fable three yeah yeah but like in fable fable two you know it's like you you have your family and all your kids do is they come and say hello daddy can i have some candy which is adorable but it's not really the kind of stuff i'm talking about fable you know like fable two was the game where you could get pregnant but it all happens in a dialogue menu and like behind the scenes like it's you don't actually deal with one of your water break sort of like emotional way no i just wait that's not how it happens i just mean time time should be a time is a right is a relationships require like effort and time and these things happen in games too fast it's like you are now pregnant you have had a kid your kids will cost you this much money i thought it was too fast in mass effect too well it is yeah in mass effect it's like yo what's up hey how's it going want to fuck sure well here's like here's here's here's the distinction is like the main thing is like they have to like find some way to make you care so it's in mass effect you at least cared like about your characters because you know about their sort of history but in fable like i didn't give a shit about my kids or anything because they they felt throwaway there was nothing well everything every interaction with another character in that game felt throw exactly like some people except for your dog in a game like mass effect when they're trying to sleep with another character yeah and but i feel like other people they're treated more like a sociopath where they just like have stalked to this person and asked all the right questions to know what they need to do to get into their pants like i know if i comfort them right now this is my end right beyond that it's all it's so you're the center of the world in a game like mass effect they it's very clear that you know if no there's never a circumstance where two of the other characters are going to like start a relationship aside from the fact that you're you know with you without you being a factor in it like what if randomly jack and i don't know uh Jacob could could hit it off and like yeah start start start up a relationship and then you know you could be like the x factor and come on in and try to break him up and get jack for yourself or something i would be a dick man there would be no intricate relationships with me on my ship i mean they actually touched a little bit on that in in awakening like some of the party at dragon age awakening like when some of your party members are bantering back and forth there is a couple of them that like they start out kind of hating each other and then they're kind of like and then like i want one of the guys uh he he says to to one of the women it's like you know well you know maybe after this is all over or something like she goes like and she she's like well that could be interesting you know like they they're kind of like hitting it off together so i mean like yeah i totally get what you're saying about your character always being the center of the world and like the relationships between other people don't seem to matter and like it would be nice to have more in that in games but like all the way back to this guy's question like i don't really think that the japan like ryan said i don't think the japanese style of dating sim could succeed i just think that that sprung up in response to a very particular social social cultural phenomenon yeah that isn't the case here yeah yeah those those type of games are the only games my brother ever asks me about really i don't know i'm going to make up a anime name hosuit de kente 14 coming out for ps2 in the united states no you just uh it would be funny you want to know about it yeah then it's not coming out um yeah pretty much so the next letter we got it says uh short time listener first time writer and this is a question we both kind of already answered but i'm only reading because okay so anyways i'm not gonna explain it what's the name of arthur's cat we know p p but we don't think you've ever said much about it my real reason for writing is you've mentioned before the arthur majored in studio art being a fellow artist i was wondering where i could find some of his work thank you for the time dig the podcast mat c what back has usina writes in i like that you took it there uh you can find it on none of your goddamn business.com no i don't i don't have a site up right now with my art on it for somebody that thought you did i did a long time ago but it was the ugliest site in existence it was made with tables i let that die the death that it deserved to there's some really good free portfolio sites carbon-made it's a really good one there's nothing cool never heard of it i have mine on there up to check that it just takes time that i i don't i haven't been motivated to spend which is a pretty shitty you have photos of your work at least i have some scans of some stuff and some digital stuff on picasa oh but yeah not not a ton of stuff online it's hard to get that stuff quite right yeah and it's really fucking hard to take a good picture of an oil painting yeah that's a skill of its own yeah it's hard to take a good picture of a sketch about it like you can scan a sketch that's easy but fuck man like lighting an oil painting to where it's not glaring like crazy i feel like scans don't usually do sketches just to see um the next question is from Jesse oh my cat's name is lady yeah lady lady i did not name her that that's the name she came with that was her given name um that's her christian name after we baptized her um she didn't take it well the next letters from jesse yeah before her name was like something something offensively ethnic until we had to get rid of that shit is this uh is this a male jesse or a female jesse that is a great question i mean a mental picture it's no longer i no longer know let's try to figure it out let's figure it out jesse from orland park illinois does she dot her eyes with hearts um it says hey guys i'm interested i'm gonna make it into a girl okay that's what i want oh hey guys it's your solution you're all very cute hey that was not in there i'm interested in buying a ds light but i figured i'd wait until after e3 in case nintendo announced a sequel to the ds yeah now that they've announced a 3ds do you think i should wait until that comes out and determine if it's worth a purchase should i wait for a ds light price drop which doesn't seem likely even with another ds coming out or should i just bite the bullet and get a ds light now and hope i don't miss out much by not getting it first of all how much lower do you fucking need the ds light price well dsi is like 160 ds light i know all i'm saying is ds light you shouldn't get anyway get a dsi instead yeah really you think yeah i can do ds i wear uh ds i wear on the screens like i said the dsi is the finest piece of nintendo hardware just the fact that it has like it doesn't boot up to the game it actually goes to a dashboard the the ui for the for the for the software is much better ds lights to the to right but it has a well it's much more like an actual dashboard from xpla or or psn dsi wear is kind of cool but for me i i like the screens better um the colors that i see for dsi what's that like or is there a black dsi yeah i would have to do my pocket oh yeah right there it is bam bam i don't know like i'm just used to seeing that weird but i i well you should try that again i think is that uh try that again dude ps3 is coming any good colors right i was like pulling out no bad the thing is is that i don't see white even if a 3ds gets announced right now it's not going to come out for a while and there's still so many great ds games out i don't see why if you really won't win now like the investment now it's not like you're going to shoot yourself in the foot later on the thing the thing that's obnoxious about nintendo right now um that uh you know people are complaining about the internet complaining about already on the internet so this isn't like something i'm bringing to light here is that nintendo it doesn't have a plan in place to um allow users to move their purchased digital content over to the system i thought i read that they did have a plan in place which is to not let you do that okay i thought you can't move from one dsi to another dsi no you can't we're going to take the option where we get more money yeah they're going to eventually though we it's it seems like it could be within their own possibility they could though because just like originally you couldn't put we games that you could play on a memory card and now you can yeah and i don't and there are SD card slots on these bad boys so you could i mean can you move dsi word games to those and put them on another system no not yet no no you can't not right now and nintendo has essentially said i mean that they don't really have a plan in place for it right now what's japanese for go fuck yourself we don't really have a plan in place for this right now no i i i feel like they have flat out said that they have that it's not like well we haven't figured it out it's that we have no plan for you to be able to do that i just they also never had a plan for you to be like be able to move Wii games on the SD card but what i mean yeah we we talked about that but what i'm saying is that i don't think they have any plan to let you do that they're not which is a nice way of saying they don't want you doing that they want you to buy all that stuff all over again i just don't think it's very sustainable right because for for for them it's going to come back and bite them in the ass because this is just a lot of people have spent a lot of money maybe not on we on we wear but on the uh like whatever the emulated old school nintendo classic stuff on we and when the we HD or whatever the next system comes out is these people are not going to want to have their we still plug into their television to play all this old stuff which is why they'll let you buy it again exactly which would be fine if there weren't examples of people of companies that do it right in place like like valve with the way that steam works right i have two words for you yes friend codes yes but wouldn't you say i guess i would say that nintendo has been doing better like i don't i don't think they have i i think the nintendo has been doing nintendo except they've been doing it with much better marketing i think you're wrong about that as a guy who doesn't have a dsi and doesn't know i don't have a dsi i'm telling you that you just do not know that things are getting better in nintendo land like the way that you the fact that there are downloadable games on the newest nintendo system that is a step forward the fact that they're cheap and fun and made by developers that actually are doing interesting things and you can't get those experiences anywhere else that is cool yeah i i'm not disputing that when i'm saying it's so what i'm saying is it's baby step in the right direction is there is there any way to redownload a dsi where game uh once you've downloaded it yeah you can go back to your your purchase history purchase purchase i mean download yeah again can you do it on another dsi no you can't but all i'm saying is that they could fix that i you say they could fix that like they don't like they don't realize that it's a problem i think they don't think it's a problem i know and what i'm telling you is that we live in a culture during this time period in which we live now the internet is very loud you know the the vocal minority can be very loud at this point and this shit won't stand for that long like right now where the this the dsi to dsi xl is really the first time where this has become an issue because before that there weren't digital purchases that needed to be transferred within nintendo from one nintendo console to another and i agree that you're right from the japanese company nintendo perspective they didn't see it as a problem they're you're right they probably thought oh we'll make people pay for this again but right now the first time when someone might have had a console and is now buying a second console and they're like ah i have to buy all these things again if i want this that kind of pisses me off the dsi xl is not a big enough upgrade where most people who number one most people who have ds's probably don't have a dsi and then especially a person who had a dsi probably isn't buying a dsi xl unless they're you know a game press person you know that that's not something that that would be some people's fourth ds at this one i mean the this console's gone through a lot of transition so i just don't think it's a big of an issue right now but when it comes to something like the we where like there's a shitload of people that have wheez and then all of a sudden a new console comes out and they're like oh yeah we want you to buy all those NES games all over again there's going to be a lot of outcry from people that are like yeah no this seems dumb and if there there isn't now the the commotion starts with dsi to dsi xl the first time where you can't do this and we're already seeing a little bit of that on twitter it's going to get louder and at some point nintendo's going to have to look at what iphone is doing or with what apple's doing and with iphones and how they basically your your device becomes like you know uh it's almost like a terminal if i if my iphone breaks tomorrow it doesn't matter i'll go get a new one plug it in and like within 30 minutes it'll be exactly the same way that previous iphone is i again i i get all that i know you do i'm just saying like you're preaching to the choir no no i'm saying is that nintendo it ends a different church i yeah i and i am saying that they're gonna say i agree with you arthur but we're on a flat cast talking to the talking to the people this is why we need to have this conversation flat out the nintendo like reading between the lines of nintendo's press release you're going to read go fuck yourself buy it again and there are so many people this is a hardcore concern and nintendo knows flat out that the hardcore people that will bitch about this will forget about it when they really forget about it but i think ryan's point is that like when we if we get to a point where there is a we too you know then that doesn't become just a hardcore concern anymore it becomes the broader perspective is that you shouldn't take a defeatist attitude about this sort of thing and that you should complain about it vocally on your podcast so that this doesn't happen so that you know we can make it make this change the right the this is the way it should be everyone knows it you know it so let's not shut up and let nintendo like just be like oh of course nintendo is not going to do it we're fucked no i it's wrong this is not how it should be i bought these games when i had a cartridge i bought them again once digitally and i'm not buying them again i another time i just feel like this is like an iraq war protest in berkeley i want you to be right i do i want nintendo to say i know you should build this service okay we'll find it i'm saying that everything that nintendo has ever done suggests that they not only are they not going to do this but they are going to giggle all the way to the bank when they don't well i certainly hope that uh i i hope i'm wrong i think i think you're i think you're wrong in so much that hope they are i'm wrong i i feel like there are positive changes at nintendo that have happened over the past year and a half i feel like people have been complaining about things like friend codes since the day they were announced true and uh like the dsi i mean you you can buy small experience on dsi but i think most people feel the dsi is the dsi where store doesn't have a lot of stuff it has a lot of stuff it's terribly organized i'm saying you don't have one so you don't know i don't i'm what i'm telling you is that there's good stuff on dsi it's like legitimately kind of cool there's not a ton of it and when you put it up against something like i don't know the iphone it's a fucking it does look like a it looks like baby shit but literal baby shit but again nintendo nintendo should be looking at the same stuff that all the rest of us are looking at and the iphone is doing great in japan okay so they're gonna they need to learn on the other round yeah i could just keep having the story we could go around around circles for an hour but nintendo nintendo will get better at this sort of thing they're learning digital belief the digital distribution uh digital distribution it's just taking a while the only reason why i would disagree with that it's just because it seems that nintendo will only ever do as little as we will accept and i just feel like we we have a short attention span when it comes to outrage okay so we cap it there i'm i'm gonna do we have a funny letter i was gonna move i was actually gonna move on to a really uh not funny relationship letter no i'll come on oh come on that's that's like the fort of rebel fm these days okay i'll do a funny relationship letter hold on hold on i don't think there are such things most of them are right i really do want you to be right i desperately do i just don't think your attitude is helpful at all like in these in these in this sort of situation do you seem to think that nintendo gives a shit what a podcast says about no no that's not what i'm saying i don't i i'm not i don't think that anyone from nintendo is listening to this podcast i just mean that this is they were this is this is like you know i i feel like that nintendo over the past year and a half has gotten better than they were at the beginning of the we consoles life span in that you know before it felt like they were lying to people lying to hardcore gamers also about the the fact that they cared like when realistically speaking they all they were doing was laughing all the way to the bank and putting out whatever the the hell they wanted but like the the the work that interesting things are happening in in nintendo land but most of it is on the digital front they're actually trying harder they're putting some marketing muscle behind tinier games that they would have never cared about before like nintendo brought us into ck story the first time nintendo brought us into c bit trip beat the first time you know like they're they at least the us marketing side cares about stuff that nintendo japan wouldn't give a shit about and so and i agree but in case we forgot nintendo japan is also the company that sprung the announcement for the next ds on nintendo america several days before they launched the dsi because of you know it got it was a japanese journalist found out about it and they were gonna leak it yeah and and what i'm saying is that nintendo japan i just don't i think that what you're saying right now there are people in nintendo america nodding their heads and nintendo japan are too busy counting their bills they're young to to care but i i do hope you're right and i want you to be right and i just think that that i again i would go back to the same thing yeah i would say that i i think that a company that has a lot of money in japan of which there aren't very many you can stop it you can stop recording right now if you want hold on a company in japan that has a lot of money right now like nintendo of which there aren't very many of them because japan japan japan japan is not doing too well would be looking at any product that's coming out um that's also doing as well as their stuff and be inspired by that and the iphone is doing incredibly well in japan and so my guess is that they would be inspired by that the ecosystem that that's something like that product has and the amount of uh the way in which people buy software for it nintendo is not a s- nintendo is a game company but they're not a ui and software company so so so when the 3ds comes out it'll have an app store like the iphone but then it'll just have all the games you've already bought on it in one place to buy a game i'm just basically what's that i don't know i i didn't understand what you just know i i was just saying you guys are arguing how they're going to make you buy the games over again i was just saying all right so i did find a lighter hard letter um it's not a relationship one either it's just someone asking uh for awesome places in sf imprints these other than our apartments so your apartment isn't an sf um yeah true it's an oakland um he says i'm going to a conference called droop droop a droople con droople yeah it's for this install right yep it's for droople it's for cms yeah okay so he's going this is a loose term for it but he's going to droople con sf in late april in downtown and uh he's going to be here for six days and he wanted to know what is cool places to check out at night that don't cost a lot of money oh that says he's going back to the co-op food episode from a while back to get some ideas but he'd appreciate some other ones humphrey slocum is something they talked about in the co-op food episodes yeah so he wants he wants shit outside but he wants he wants shit late at night right he would yeah because he's going to be busy during the day the tender one the tender one it's your own action adventure game yeah it's survival or sums it up pretty well i i am not a night owl city dweller i can't tell you i was i don't go to clubs or bars or any of that shit anymore so if you like uh you know if you like more of a you know chill atmosphere like kind of at night along the marina is really cool like sorry what's this we went to or other can you remember the sushi place that was up until two can't think of what it's fucking called i can't either it's look up it's also outrageously expensive well yeah but if you got money and you want to spend some money go to yell he said yeah he said yeah he said she said oh fuck i immediately blocked that part out because i'm rich i have no time for you fucking peons honestly matt and i do we don't go out that much because we don't have but very much money all right well let's get back to the non-depressing conversation topics i'm just kidding well uh go up to that what's what's that one hill the toy tower oh yeah i would say you're twin peeps and just look at it this way and if you're not from yeah that goes to the bridge and bridges open all night yeah if you just look up twin peeps you can drive it to twin peeps i think the the little park up there where you can actually stay and have the nice views is open until like 11 or something is there a farmer's market on fishermen's war there is on saturday yeah it's not a nighttime thing which is what you know it's not a nighttime thing but if you could get down there even Anthony Bourdain seemed to like it and he doesn't like anything true also like the the corner store on the corner of 24th like on 23rd there's a corner store very close to our house that serves an outrageous lee huge sandwich with like hot dogs and carne asada and egg and all this other stuff and then and they went there and he loved it and it was a corn it's a corner store it's like a anyway there are better sandwich places in our neighborhood than the place they hit up yelp and look for some of the highest reviewed places a lot of time second yeah was he looking for food or is he just looking for activities cool things cool things you like the cool things hipster spotting into laura spark um there's just plenty of there's bars everywhere go to missions good yeah go to the mission go to like 16th and Valencia and wander what's that popular bar with all the picnic tables oh the side guys it would be better if you went like i don't know when it's not super crowded it's a good place to hang out during the day i think it's good people watch yeah he i think is free time again is during the night so yeah a lot of people like talk mess about hipsters but i like i like looking at them because they usually have interesting style and stuff even though some of it can be obnoxious style some of them have cool so what is your style i'm not just i'm gonna do one more layer of douche you guys can feel free to chime in if you know something it's very short but it's mainly geared towards uh people who read expanded universe star world jesus christ he says uh i considered it irrelevant if it if it can be erased by george lucus which it can't be because it's fucking laura and the vast majority of the novels are things i don't give a shit about fuck you give me some recommendations about bounty hunter that wasn't in the letter give me yeah that's me saying i'm interjecting okay um he said give me some recommendations about bounty hunters and stormtroopers not fucking jedi's that he did say fucking stuff like tales from java's palace guess what bad news oh you fucking fanboys chase care and travis off of the star wars but even those ones above jedi so you just want like cool things about bounty hunters and stuff basically and you like tales from java's palace you should just go out and buy like the other six tales from tales from the empire tales from the new republic tales of the bounty hunters you're good to go you're pretty fucked though as far as new stuff goes because they're moving away from doing any non jedi related yeah they're doing a lot of public stuff uh that's a bummer because i really like the uh uh uh the commandos yeah care and travis the care and travis yeah those are really good and all the super hardcore jedi i want to be nerds chased her off of it really she's not doing any more she's officially sworn off doing any more star wars stuff did you say because like the nerds yes that is specifically that you should go you should go you should go read tales from books and then keep listening to our podcast you should be uh you should read the rogues quadrant series specifically the one called uh the back to war the end um you can email us your letters that letters that eat dash sleep dash game dot com you should also listen to our friends podcasts the mob cast at bit mob.com as well as the geek box at geekbox.net and uh i don't know do you guys have something that you would pimp well we have two more episodes of co-op uh and that's it and then co-op will be no more but we're so the the next one is next tuesday co-op live four p.m then there's another one next month i know that's kind of weird on uh 18th and uh then uh keep your eye on area five dot tv because we're going to have some announcements sometime within the next couple weeks and that site's going to become more of a destination for our videos and everyone can check out some of the stuff you're working on with egm egm now yeah i don't know when the episode's gonna go up i wish i did because it's cool and i want people to watch it but i cannot tell you we will be sure to pimp your ride yes once we know we're good at tme g all right well twitter dot com slash dirty t oh yeah we haven't done twitter thing like trunks yeah you find me twitter dot com slash chuff money and you can find arthur at twitter dot com slash agis and uh it was cool meeting all the super nice people at matt at packs hello very funny meeting the 11 and 12 year old kids with their parents the 13 year okay i specifically can't remember his name i really wanted to try and remember he was there with his dad they've flown out from Ottawa well you guys know who you are yeah it was very nice and you were you're i may i'm say again that your dad is probably the coolest dad ever and it was nice to meet you and if you look like you're gonna shit your pants talking to us which is really i feel weird cussing on me he listens to this now but i really don't think i can feel that way what up
