Rebel FM Thanksgiving in July Short-tacular!
Let's get this out of the way: it's a short show this week, and the sound quality is not great. Rather than skip a week due to some tomfoolery and shenanigans, we decided to sack up and record another of our diner-table podcasts. It's a long round of what we've been playing where we talk about the Uncharted 2 beta, Point Lookout, the new Fallout 3 DLC, and Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, and then it's on to a few letters. This is NOT episode 23, so you've still got a couple of weeks to get in those theme song entries kiddos. Slim vaginas to you and yours. This week's music, in order of appearance:Blue Spanish Sky - Chris IsaakThe Dancer - PJ Harvey
You are now in possession of the rebel captain. Welcome. Welcome to the... Welcome to the rebel FM Thanksgiving special. It's another mobile podcast run, our way to the Mexican food restaurant. It's going to be a shorter podcast today, because I've had a hell of a day. My hell of a day actually started out in a fucked up way, my dad. My dad this week, when I was at the dog adoption, asked me, he said, "Son, one of my sailors found this video on YouTube that has your name on it from your podcast." And it had this picture of the Star Wars character and something in the bed. And I was like, "Oh God." And it was the... It was the... Hi. How are you? Good. It was the... Can we... It was the auto picture? And so it's the auto picture where... Where... Yaddle... Sorry. They just walked away from me for saying, "It's the yaddle picture where it's the yaddle on the bed." And then there's a... There is a... A flashlight shoved in between the mattress and the box ring. So my dad saw this. And my dad wanted to know why there was a picture that was associated with me. An obvious sex toy shoved between the mattress. And I had to explain to him that this was the internet dad. And that people do things that I did not make this. And that it was a joke. I'm going to sit over there because this is fucking the answer. The white... She is white. Art there's moving. All right. Now I'm going to set this picture on the mic stand. I got it covered by the ponchos. Okay. I like the big guitar stuff going on on the side of the menu. Whoa! So, what's the... We're going to talk about games we've been playing? After we get chips. Okay. Hi. Hey, you doin' all right. Excellent. Big bowl of salsa. Thank you so much. All right. Thank you. You know, what do you want from that movie? Tyler, you need some time, right? Yeah, we'll take a minute to decide. Thank you. Yeah, I really don't know what I want to get. So, Art there tells us about point look out since you've been trying it today. Well, I mean, I've been playing it for like 45 minutes. I'm going to get started pretty quickly. So, I apologize for eating sounds in advance. So, it starts out like all the other follow-up content in that it starts you out wherever you are in a message points on screen that says that like, well, such and such, there's this ferry that's offering rides to point look out. So, you go down there so you go to wherever this ferry is. Is it like geographically? I don't understand where it is. The ferry picks you up in an existing point and takes you to a separate map. Okay. So, it starts you off like you go on the ferry and first off you can't take your hire links with you. The guy's like, we don't do group trips. Your buddy is going to have to stay here. That sucks. Fox has been with you forever. Yeah. And I am definitely feeling his absence. And I need to remember that he's in the Museum of History. So, it's good that I'm saying that on the podcast. So, if I forget, I can come back and listen. So, man, this really is like a 16-bit image. Like a Super Nintendo image of Mexico in the front of his menus. From an old adventure game that never was. So, yes. So, you get on the ferry and this kind of sketchy dude takes you to point look out which is basically a sort of seaside resort type community or like a Jersey Shore kind of thing. Does it actually look nice still? No. Okay. But is it supposed to be like a resort still? No, that's what it was before in the apocalypse or whatever. Like I think you see like a Ferris wheel or something in the background. But it's super like misty and fucked up and green. Right. Which is something you don't see a whole lot of in Fallout. So, it's kind of an interesting change of pace. But right off you get the idea that something is not right because there's no one else around going in like the broken steel actually did. It had a sort of cinematic type intro where there was something that established the scene. It was more you watching than you're doing. So, as you're coming in on this ferry you look around and you see like this sort of running around and dogs running in packs through the streets of this place. And you look off in the distance and there's a mansion that's on Fimer. And it's just your natural inclination to head towards that. No, like it. I mean whenever you talk to someone in Fallout and they give you like a point of interest quote unquote then there's a thing that pops up in the corner that says like this has been added to your house. Okay, the same? We're ready. Can I have the chillekines? The chillekines? Yeah, mix them up. Okay. I'll have the case of these with flour. No meat. No meat. Chillekines, actually. And can I get a glass bottle to go? Yeah, can I get one of those too? You too? Do I get a... Do I get a... Yeah, I know you wouldn't believe it. Are you sure? Yeah, he's older than every, he's older than both of us. I know, it's weird. I see 20. 20. No way. He's got a couple gray hairs on him. Oh, he does, actually. I like it, actually. It's in my front little curl. I don't know if they were more pronounced. They're going to be distinguished in gray. Right. As long as I keep my hair. I just noticed that I just want to point out the fact that we're at a Mexican food restaurant and there's a hamburger sitting around there already thing. Yeah, they're superb. I know, but I'm saying who comes here for a fucking hamburger. Anyways. Mexicans. Moving on, point lookout, continuing. So, I mean, in Fallout 3, whenever you hear about something that will be a quest or whatever, you get a little notification that's been added to your map anyway. Okay. Thank you. Thank you so much. You're welcome. And since that's the first thing you get in point lookout, in point lookout is separated from everything else. Like, you can only come in and out on that ferry. You can't instantly fast travel from point lookout to the world. It's the first quest you get it automatically assigns that as your waypoint. That's what it's going to do. So that's about where you are in that right now. But we don't need a play by play. Let's give more about how you feel about it overall. I mean, talking about coming into it sort of establishes the vibe of it, which is it. You had through this, it's like an estuary slash swampy kind of coast. And as you go through the mist towards the house, you run across what are, I mean, can we call something a mongoloid? I think that's, it's a real term. Okay. You come across like mongoloids. I mean, the meals have eyes, mongoloids. Yeah. But are they called mutants or something? I mean, I've never, I mean, I've never played in a fall to know, I know you see super mutants. Are there standard mutants that are non-super mutants? I think the implication is that there is, but you never really see any fall. I mean, ghouls are technically mutants. Right. From the radiation. The fireworks are mutants and the ants are mutants. Well, if you ever found the Oasis, there's a pretty crazy mutant there. That is a pretty awesome mutant. So that was one of my favorite egg. That was probably my favorite side mission, I think. I don't know. It was so different in like such a weird choice. Yeah. No really good, clear answer. No. Yeah. So. So is it kind of, does it kind of have like a horror tone? It does actually, which is, it's, it's what I was saying on the way over here. And I'm sure this comparison is probably going to get made a lot. It's like deliverance meets the hillside eyes. It's like that one episode of The X-Files that the only ever aired once. You know what I'm talking about? The one it was all about. I guess the only aired at once, so I never saw it. It's a pretty infamous episode where there was literally about this family that in breeds the whole time. It's like the only one that wasn't really supernatural whatsoever. It was just about this like fucked up Indian family. There's like a woman who lived under the bed. She was on like a box with wheels because she had no legs. Stuff. It was like, it was Texas trains on last year. It basically had a very, it had a very vibe in that it was, it was so, it was just random. It was just decided it was so disturbing. They would never aired again. It reminds me of like 70s exploitation of horror stuff. Like deliverance treads the line. It makes me sad that I don't have fallout. I mean, you can always, I mean, is it on your website? In theory, could I, yeah, I guess so. Could I, in theory, could I play this and not even do any of the regular fall stuff? Like as soon as I get out of the vault, jump in on this? I don't know if there's a level requirement or not, but you would need to find or get to where it is on the map. Right, because you can't fast travel until you find it, right? Yeah. They could take some fun. Like one of the corners too, because as you get towards the edges of the map. It's across from the drivers here. I don't like it, like across the river. Well, you can take a pretty low level, low key approach to that. I don't know, like there are talent company people all over that area. So, so far you like it, because it's like a totally different feel from the rest of the game? I do. Not completely different from the rest of the game. There was one other four spot in the game in the Dunwich Borer building, which is sort of a love crafting area where you see ghosts and like hear weird voices and it's like populated with coolness. But yeah, it's really different than most. I mean, that's what I'm saying, at least you're paying for more content. It's just like here's more of the same. It's like something totally, almost like a side story, a real side story. It's hard to say, yet, whether or not it's worth the 10 bucks. But so far, the fall of three content has been pretty consistent. On GameSpy I got a 4.5 out of 5, so. Kind of really difficult to rate DLC that away. Yeah, I think, you know, we've run into conflicts about whether you straight DLC that way as well, hammer suits actually starting up a DLC review site soon, so. Yeah, I was saying, like, if someone said, "Hey, would you review the DLC?" I mean, not sure would, but whatever. Wait, maybe he's a DLC before? Right. There are new weapons. There's a lever action rifle that does way more damage than a hunting rifle. There's double barrel shotgun, which doesn't... Wasn't Lincoln's Repeater a lever action rifle? Uh, yes, and the lever action rifle rifle actually looks an awful lot like Lincoln's Repeater, except it uses, like, 10 millimeter ammo, I think. Or something like that, like something that I have literally thousands of, whereas Lincoln's Repeater uses Magnum ammo, and I think we have 24 shots of total. Right. So, what else have you been playing? Um, Cold War has bound in blood. Do we know that that's a bargain at all? I mean, there's been previews of it, so you've only played, like, the first chunk of the game anyway. It just acts, which is, like, three chapters, three or four chapters. Um, it is really good. And coming off a gun, like, it's really easy to make comparisons to game play-wise. Um, the shooting is very casual. There's an extremely aggressive auto-aim that sort of floats to enemies if you're, like, even moving slightly in the direction. Um, there's sort of a weird cover mechanic where you move up to an object and it'll automatically tick cover and you, like, sort of tilt the controller the way you'd be weaning your body around or over cover. I'd say a chunk of jalapeno. And it was... It was, uh, it was a little much... Look at this, Tyler, you need to do that. Oh, whoa, whoa, I'll pass. And Sean Elliott getting people to eat things that will kill them. There's, like, a third of a jalapeno that didn't get ground up in this fucking salsa. Yeah, that's... Or it's the 24-clock starts ticking towards the bathroom. D-dink! Um, okay, so one of the things about the original Call of War is, uh, that made people interested in it. It was the way that they told the story, which is that, I mean, uh... Multiple perspectives. Yeah, I mean, well, not just multiple perspectives. And played as a religious net. You're, you are the hunter and the hunted. Yeah. I mean, it really shades. It just phrased it that way. Um, and in this, it's not quite that way, but the game begins and the two main characters of the story are the two brothers from Call of War is, uh, one of whom dies right at the beginning of the first Call of War is. So it's pretty cool. Yes. Okay. Um, don't let that turn you against it. Um, and right off the bat, it introduces, like, I don't, I don't want to give away spoilers, but it introduces... Didn't you just give away spoilers? I think that he died right off the beginning. At the beginning of the first Call of War is... Oh, okay, never mind. I think that's literally the first thing that happens, I think. Okay. Um, I'll shut up. Eat this chip. Don't hurt yourself. Um, the, the game introduces the story in such a way that you think you know exactly how it's going to happen. Like, what's going to happen. Um, you got anything? Yeah, I'm just debating eating this chunk of Halloween. No, you don't do it. You've had a bad enough day already and you want to spend the rest of it on the toilet? You've already decided you want to do it. You're just trying to get the courage to do it. Continue talking. Continue talking. I mean, just... You say I wish to chip on top of it. I mean, I'll just say it because it starts right off and it's not like the Assassin's Creed twist that gets given away. Uh, there are three brothers. Uh, there's the two that you know about from the first one and the third one that left the seminary to go back home and help his mother during the tail end of the Civil War. And they are of the Confederacy. So, right off the bat, it's sort of such a strange scene where you're playing as people who better Confederate soldiers. Like, you are shooting Union soldiers as a Confederate. Right, but I mean, you know, I think most intelligent people realize that not every Confederate soldier terrible person, just like not every person that fought for Germany during World War II was a terrible person. Really? Um, but the way that the... Some of the Sith and Star Wars fell out could be considered confused. I actually think that Jedi's. I think technically you have to be able to be a Sith, don't you? I don't know. I mean, I was working on the dark side of Star Wars that you let me borrow and it talks a lot about Jedi's who just had their own motives and were selfish. It's Jedi. Like, deer. Continue. I would say some of you said deers. Yeah, I know. Much like there are no... There are no groups of deers. Right. I understand. There are no... There are no Jedi's. Cackles of Jedi's. It's Jedi. Uh, the game starts, like, at the end of the story, Tarantino's it by having the brothers pointing guns at each other and about to kill each other. Whoa. Um, then Rocket's back a couple of years to the Civil War. Don't saw that prototype. Yes. Um, because it's very popular and easy method to get people interested right away. Um... So, after playing a few missions, at first it didn't seem like there was going to be very much interesting happening as far as there being two characters because as you play through the game, in most levels you're given the choice to pick between Rey and, uh, and Michael, I think his name is, um, and they have different skills and different specialties. Like, Michael is good with the rifle and he's shooting far away and he can, uh, quick draw and, like, hammer back his revolver with his heel or whatever. Uh, are they both always there with you or it's, like, from the outside? They're almost always so far, they're almost always together. So, like, you're swapping back and forth between them? No. Mechanic-wise, I think you can talk about anything, but I'd just make sure you don't see too much about story-wise. Yeah, I'm not even really far enough in to see it. Except that they are frequently arguing and you can tell that they're slowly being pulled apart. Mm-hmm. Like, the stuff that they did during the war and that stuff that they did since is, like, making them hate themselves and each other. And it- it's surprising because it's actually handling a pretty mature storyline that I would expect to see in a Western really well. It's handling it very seriously and it's not- it doesn't feel overblown or cliched. I mean, it's dealing in territory that other- other, like, movies have covered, but- but not so exhaustively that this is just like, "Oh, well, this is just a bunch of archetypes." You know, I mean, like, there's- like, there- it's- it's- it's clear from the beginning that they're torn apart over a war. Uh, and I think I'm right at the part where it starts to establish that relationship, but uh... It's always a woman. It is. Um, but it's- I mean, so far, it's- it's- it's not a- it's not a good shooter. And yes, I'm- I'm tiptoeing around that semantic discussion, but it's- if you're growing and looking for a good first-person shooter, I don't think it's going to satisfy it. Maybe it's just a good first-person experience. It's a good first-person action game. Like, there's always stuff happening. God damn you. That probably picked up on the mic, didn't it? Uh... It's a first-person action game. Yeah, I mean, you can look down and see your feet. I can. But the- I mean, the animation from first-person is really awkward. I will say that. But I- I mean, like, there are lots of different weapons to buy. There's a weapon upgrading mechanic. Um... Like, there's a lasso mechanic from Michael. Like, where you can latch on to things and pull yourself up and put yourself in a more advantageous sniping position. And he has throwing knives. Um... So what do you think about it overall so far? I... Really had to force- tear myself away from it. Hey, Tony. Good. That's Tyler. Be careful, Kay? Yes, thank you. Okay. Um... I- I wanted to have more than it to talk about on the podcast, so I really had to tear myself away from it to play-point-lookout. But last night I was up until two in the morning playing. Um, so so far I'm really enjoying it. Yay! Be careful. Thank you so much. That's okay. Yep. Okay. Um... It's a much more mechanically sound game than the first one. It's a much better-looking game than the first one was. Like, it's actually- Oh, the first one it does. It spread me. It looks good. Didn't use, like, source. Yeah. I'm just saying that's an old religion. I mean, the first one is terrible. Right. I'm just saying, of course, the second one looks better. But this one, like, keeps up with other- with other games. And it- it's very atmospheric and... I don't know. It just- it- everything about it is- has been really... cohesive to me so far. Is it, um, Color Wars? The first one was it- was that the one that had a really good soundtrack? Probably. The soundtrack is pretty excellent so far. Um, I'm hoping it's because I'm playing the retail build, but the load times are fucking awful. Really? Yeah. No, you're not playing a retail build. That's what you meant to say. Or it... You said you were playing a retail build. I know, I said I hope it's because I'm not playing a retail build. I thought that's what I said. Yeah. Because the load times on the version I'm playing are pretty terrible. No. And those- that is something that does tend to get cleaned up as the game approaches release. Like, the load times in Red Faction were a lot better in final retail than they were. The... near final reviewable copy that we played. So... Um, other than that, Hitman, more Tiger Woods, although not as much Tiger Woods as I have liked. I- I feel like I'm sort of getting more and more dialed in in that game. I'm still really enjoying it. Yeah. Yeah, I started playing the PS3 version. Just seeing how it works. And I- I started to build a little more accuracy with the dual stick. The analog stick more than, uh, for years. It's cool. I'm pretty sure that it's just something that we're gonna have to deal with. I like it. Yeah, I mean, it's not- it's not- this is already not as bad at me. It sounds as if there wasn't. I have. In case we will forget, we are at a Mexican food restaurant. Um, so what were you saying? The dual analog stick of what? On, uh, on Tiger Woods? I don't know. I- I felt like it was, uh... I felt like my putting was a lot more accurate with that stick instead of the 360 stick. That's weird. 'Cause it's like a longer, you know, I don't know. I mean, the 360 was just much more granular control. I can talk about what I've been playing so you guys can have a chance to eat something. Um, I've been playing nothing. No, I'm just kidding. I've been playing a lot of over there. I was about to call you a fucking liar. I also played some over there, but only multiplayer so far with that. Um, did I talk about Overlord last week at all? I don't think I did, right? No, really. So, yeah, I mean, it's- it's pretty great. Uh, I ended up giving it a- a four out of five stars on the review scale. Uh, the only thing I didn't like about it was, uh... Sometimes it- well, it's got pretty bad framerate throughout the whole game, but you kind of just get used to it and accept it. This is on the console versions on PC? The PC version, if you have a great PC, it's fine. But, uh, it is obviously not made for PC. Like, unless- if you're going to play it on PC with a controller and you have a good PC, it's great. But if you're not going to play with a controller, the mouse and keyboard controls are not very good at all, in my opinion. You can't remap them, so... Oh, man. But, um, I like it a lot. I mean, they really nailed the cuteness of the minions even more so in the second one than they did in the first one. Would you say cuteness are character? No, I think they're cute. I actually said in my review, I think they're the cutest things it's mugwise. So... Which is- which is good, since they look so much like grandma's. Right. I mean, that's the thing is that they're just kind of cute because, like, they do have so much character and they're kind of like- Like, I said, they're- they- you can find them both intimidating when you see them all armored up. But then they'll do something where they'll just make some sound like the funst thing and be like, "Meh!" Like, happiness, and they're like, "All right, they're still cute." So, what we're like when they're riding on wolves, like, they'll be riding and you'll be like, "Yeah, yeah!" "All right, good little feet." And you're just like, "You guys are adorable." Go kill that person. Yeah, exactly. Um, yeah, it's really good. I mean, it's got, like, its own- its entirely own storyline. I mean, it's a completely storyline from the- I guess the way that the chronologically story goes- If you played the first one, then there was the downloadable content or the stuff that came with the PS3 when I believe. Yeah. That tells its own story, and then at the conclusion of that one, that's where this one picks up. So- You were a new overlord, and that's right. Yes. Yeah, you are- you start off as a child. That's how they do the tutorial. And the minions have been without an overlord for a while, and they find you and think that you could be it. So they start teaching you, like, "Tell us to go break shit." "Tell us to go beat these kids up who are giving you a hard time." (laughter) Could you be the best person in the world to grab me the salt from the next level? Yeah. What do you need salt for? My food. Man. I just got a slight addiction to salt, as you can see. I mean, I would probably put salt in my shit, too, but it would give my heart attack and a heart attack. No, no, my heart attack. Is that right? That was sort of the point. Um. But, um- Everything okay? Everything is excellent. Yeah, can I get actually a cup with a little bit of ice in it? Mm-hmm. Can I get the same? Um, yeah, I mean, I enjoyed it a lot. It's super long. It's like 12 hours long. By the time you finish the multiplayer is fun if you're playing with someone that knows what they're doing. Um, ouch. No, no, but I'm saying you can't- you still understood what you're doing from the first one enough. But I just- it's like, why would you buy overlord to put multiplayer? I don't know. And some of those modes would be even more fun if there's more people involved, because you can get a little separated from one another. Wow. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I mean, and it's not even the kind of game where it's likely that you and a ton of your friends are going to buy it, so why not jump in the multiplayer? Like it was, say, Grand Theft Auto. Right. I don't know. Um, but it's a great game. I think it's probably one of the better games to come out during the summer. It's like the Pikmin referencing saying that it's like, even Pikmin is kind of apt when they've done away with a lot of the binary decisions. And the first one where it was like, do the good thing or do the evil thing, and this one is- Do the evil thing or do the less evil thing? Right. And so, uh, like you get the option to kill everyone in a town or, or like enslave everyone in a town. Nice. And enslaving people in a town was rad, because by the time you get done enslaving them, they're all just sitting there. They're no longer doing like normal town things. They're all like working like in the pits of Mordor, making armor for you. So I would just come there and outfit my guys. And I'd really like the fact that you're able to resurrect minions now because there'd be certain ones you would get like a- So attached to 'cause you'd been through so much together. By the end of the game, I had like an elite force. So, I mean- And their name to this time around. And their name, too. I mean, yeah, which is how you find them. And so, that's right. That one with the pumpkin hit on us had just died. Damn. Yeah. I mean, overall, I thought it's still a great game. And the storyline's pretty good. I mean, it's very tongue-in-cheek, like fairytale humor, but it's pretty well done. Let me ask something. A lot of people had issues with the first one that were rooted in slight mechanical problems, like the camera and the lack of a minimap and stuff like that. But do you feel like they made enough improvements to the little flaws in the game that would make people be able to jump on board with it? Yeah, I said in my review, if you only sort of like the first one, you'll probably really like the second one because I felt like they've improved a lot of things like- I remember Mark McDonald and one of them complained that there was no minimap, but now there is. I think we talked about that last time. You can rotate the camera now as long as you're not moving your minions. You have to have some more direct camera control. But you can only move it right and left, and then you can- there's a button. You can hold a button if you want to just do a look with the camera. You can change the camera angle. Basically, it's way more control than you had in the first one. So they have done a lot of small mechanical improvements like that. And I don't know, they've just done things to make it cooler. In the first one, when you went back to your castle and stuff, it looked cool, but it wasn't nearly as cool as this. Like when you roll back to your castle now, you'll run by your elite guards and they'll salute you. I don't know, there's just all these little fine touches that make it pretty great. By the end of the game, I had three mistresses, which is more than I can say in real life. Besides that, I haven't really been playing that much, I guess, because my life's been so wrapped around overlord for review. I'm about to start the Wii one. I played the DS one, it's terrible, do not go by that fucking so bad. But this is disappointing because you were really looking forward to this. And it's like a completely different game, right? Yeah, it's just you directly controlling minions, like you have an elite task force of four minions. The lost Vikings. Yeah, except bad. Yeah, I didn't think it was good. Like I played the first half hour, but I was not impressed whatsoever. Alright, so, thank you. Battlefield 1943. Yeah, I played then, I guess I'm going to talk about that. What do you think about that, Tyler? Oh man, you know, it's the game I probably believe the most at E3. Just because, I mean, it might have been because of my familiarity with the controls. I'm playing some of this Battlefield bag company, but. And actually I was going to ask about that. We were supposed to talk about that, and I don't know that we ever did. Like, I guess I cut you off during the Christmas special. Yeah, maybe so, about playing Battlefield bag 22. Yeah, and we had a couple people in the comments and on gaff, ask about it. So after you talk about 1943, maybe you can elaborate on bag companies some more. Yeah, because 1943 is the only other game I've been playing. So let's talk about it, and then we can let Tyler. Yeah, I mean, it's definitely, you know, the first Battlefield 1942, right, that came out. That was one of those games that I always wanted to play, but just never had a PC. Right. And so now it's kind of, it's really exciting to have it on a console. And it's just like we were talking about on the way over here. The maps were pretty big, but they balanced the teams as such to where there's always this back and forth the control points, because it's really just sort of like one game. I was going to say, yeah, I mean, there's not like a, I mean, Battlefield was the first game that made it to where it's like capturing old points and it ticks against the overall like ticker of the team. Kind of like a, you know, Star Wars battle front did that and all that, but Battlefield was like the first one. They kind of laid that down. And yeah, you know, Tyler's right. Like even though it supports 12 V12, which is like the most for any XBL game. But it's just enough that even on the maps, like it sucks because there are times like you won't see like a horde of people in one place. But it's enough that the maps are big enough to where they can't just camp all the points and hold them and take other points at all the time so that there's always one that's undefended. So you get enough of a back and forth the game can actually be intense the whole way through instead of like a line slide. Yeah, definitely. And you know, they still have all the really just fun vehicles that are in there to control. Like the airplanes, which are like, like we were talking about the way over here, they're a little, they're really difficult to control at first. Then once you get, once you get the hang of them, mostly like getting used to turning, because that's where most people crash is. They'll, they'll roll and then not be able. Yeah, it can be a little challenging. You know, I saw Anthony on the way over here, like we were holding different territories and I would look at one, you know, getting captured and then roll by there, you know, I'm a fucking fighter. Do a strafing run on the capture, you know, the territory. Or drop a bomb. Or drop a bomb, you know, take out two guys. It was just really cool failing and also just that of... Can you stand on the wings of fighters? No, there's no, I don't believe there's any wing running. Yeah, yeah, they apply to the motion. Because it's on the frostbite engine, which is the engine that uses, or that battlefield bag company. Which is why there's also building destruction. I was about to ask, is there a susceptible terrain? Not as, not as in-depth as battle. Bad company by any means, like, it's only certain parts of buildings. After playing Red Faction Gorilla, playing other games with quote unquote destructible environments is going to be like, like anything. Yeah, the bad company also allows you to deform the terrain, more than Red Faction ever did, so. And one thing about bad company too, is it has the more modified frostbite engine that's allowing you to take down entire buildings. And bad company, the first one, and in 1943, you can really only take out the certain areas and walls. Yeah. But it's just rad, and just, you know, the World War II weapons set, they're so perfect for just online balancing. It's a lot more rewarding when you hit some guy with a rifle with, like, five shots on the lane. You're really going to, like, call a war as online, though. Where you have rifles, you can only fire, like, every two seconds. Yeah, well, you know, they're rifles. And I also like, I also like that you have infinite ammo for your primary weapon now. Yeah. Like, you have, like, a clip that it runs out of ammo, but you don't have an overall ammo. Like, you spawn with 180 bullets, and that's it. And so, if you're having, like, a really good kill streak that you run out of primary ammo, you're just deaf. It's not like that at all on this. Yeah. It's got, like, to keep going. The three classes you can choose from the get-go, which is like your basic infantry soldier that has, like, an M1 Garand or something. Uh, the infantry that's sort of good for taking out vehicles, which you get, like, the Thompson, and then sort of the sniper class. Do people need to keep their expectations for this as a battlefield game in check, since it's on Xbox Live? I don't think so. I don't think so at all. Yeah. I think it's... I mean, it only has four maps and only three classes, but they're also, like, well-made, in my opinion. It's like, that's all you really need. Especially for a downloadable game. It's, like, so nice. And, you know, one of the things that was really amazing about Battlefield Bad Company is how much we played it, even before they did the update with the new game mode. I mean, it was the territory's mode from the start for the longest time, you know, and it's just the game mechanics themselves are so fine. The only thing that I thought was weird is some of the controls are pretty weird. Like, the, like, moving a tank forward is left trigger and moving it in reverse with left bumper. There was, like, all these things that took, like, went against everything, every other shooter's taught me for a long time. I agree with that. You know, it's because they want to free up. Everything's very good. Thank you. I mean, that sort of continues a precedent set in 1942, which had some really complicated vehicle controls very far, currently. Yeah. And, yeah, that's something that they do, and I definitely had to get used to it. It was... I didn't like it either. I remember trying to fly... trying to fly a helicopter in battlefield modern combat. Oh, dude, and it's still in bad company. I remember I made the mistake of getting in that helicopter with you. Yeah. I mean, actually thought they did the helicopter controls and, uh, prototype really well. Now that I think about it, the helicopter is relatively easy to control, so, you just hardly ever did it. My favorite helicopters are Grand Theft Auto's helicopters, so I've always liked theirs the most. The helicopters and mercenaries, too, were really good, actually. All right. I got gold on the fucking helicopter, sitting outside. So... I mean, those are all, like, sort of tangential to do you like what you played about it in 1943. And... I will buy it the day it comes out and throw it down to people. Yeah, I don't think I got my copy reserved, man. Of 1943? Yeah, the code already. I have a code ready to go as soon as it, yeah, for June 1st. They were giving them way to you. Put that to them. Uh-huh. Um... How much does it cost, dude? I don't know, I'm gonna guess 15. Yeah, um, yeah, I think it's, like, 15 bucks, 15, 14 bucks. That's pretty reasonable, especially considering a lot of other kinds of, uh, online PSN. Yeah, it's, like, a 500-meg download or something like that. It's a... I think it's gonna be great. I mean, I hope it does really well because I want a lot of people to be able to play with. But I still think it's, yeah, it's a lot of fun. I mean, and, uh, playing in the vehicles and everything Tyler's right is a lot of fun, although, man, it's, I think it's actually really hard to be good with the tank. You have a hard time telling people what the tank is. Yeah, and it makes me glad, though. You cannot, yeah, you're not just gonna take a tank and roll over a map. 'Cause, uh... That's a good thing. When you're firing the main tank barrel, it's pretty ineffective against infantry unless you're, like, dead on. Like, you can get close and it's just gonna wound 'em, but it won't kill 'em and they have recharging health in this. So, um... Yeah, you really have to be good with the machine gun, and it's hard 'cause the coax of the thing turns pretty slow a lot of times. So you can't just, like, chase 'em down. But, I mean, which is, I guess, kind of realistic, but more importantly, it's, like, you're saying you're not gonna roll over a map with the tank. Like, you're not gonna be like... It's good because that really became a problem in cognitive world at war, where someone did the tank. And if someone spawns with a rocket launcher, they can take out a tank to the problem, or... Like, even the sniper can throw demolition charges and blow up a tank, like, super easy, or people can get in a bomber and bomb it. So, it's really... There's a lot of options. Yeah. Yeah, the tanks, you know, have their learning curve in the controls in the helicopter in Battlefield Bad Company. Also has, like, a huge learning curve to just learn how to operate it, but... Is this one or two? One. And they're the same in two. And, like, one of my biggest complaints with two was that the helicopters were two dominating. Like, you're a really good helicopter pilot, and you took out the anti-aircraft gun of the other team, like, right off the bat. I mean, unless you're a crack shot fucking rocket launcher, you know, guy, I mean, you weren't gonna get the helicopter down. And that's one thing I asked about them when I was checking out Battlefield Bad Company, too, and they were like, "Well, no, we wanted to..." You know, I was wondering, you know, did they do any kind of general lock-on for a rocket launcher, or anything to make it easier to take the helicopter down with their, like, no. We still wanted to... Yeah, basically, you can still take down airplanes that are no problem in 1943, though, 'cause the A guns make it way easier. Oh, yeah. Yeah, the A guns in 1943. But they're pretty spaced out, but I actually thought it was really cool with the destructible train that you use. There's wooden bridges that connect parts of the islands, and those can totally be blown up. Like, I saw some dude rolling towards it with a Jeep, and they wanted to make it so you couldn't get tanks across, basically, 'cause there was no way, except for this wooden bridge to this bluit. So you had to assault, like, the last fort on foot, 'cause it was kind of cool. Like, just little things like that. But, I mean, it's, you know, it's still very Battlefield. There are times that people will, like, be flying over a base and just bail out from a helicopter and let the plane just go crashing into the ocean, so they can land and try to capture a point. You will still see your fair share of ridiculous crap like that. So, I mean, not to mention the fact that you'll, especially when the game first comes out, you'll see a billion people trying to grab those airplanes, and immediately, like, turning upside down and wrecking. So, like, it is really hard to get used to it first. So... That's what I've been playing. Do you have anything else for work? I mean, I'm...overlord was my review game, and I'm about to start Overlord for Wii. So, and I have Conduit, so we'll see what that's like. Yeah, Conduit. How about them apples? I've seen a ha. A good review for that game. I played it, and I thought it was fun. I don't know. So, Tyler, what you've been hitting up. Um... I played, uh...I played a lot of Crysis the other night, and sort of had my first, like, I was telling you about it. I had my first bad-ass Crysis moment. You know, I'm not sure how quiet I went to the game, but, uh... Have you seen Supernatural shit hit? Like, like, how did it explain to you? Yeah, like, I've seen one of the fucking crazy aliens take out one of the sergeants or whatever. Right, have you been inside, like, an alien outpost? Okay, you're not that far, you're not that far. That's what you're saying, you're welcome. Thanks. Yeah, yeah, so, like, in this particular area, it was sort of like a dig site, and there were all these tanks at the bottom of the dig, and there was, like, this cascading, you know, ramp that went all the way around the edge of the dig site that... Oh, I know what you're talking about with, like, the sniper posts and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah. And, uh, it, like, so I had a bunch of C4, and there was a Hummer right there, so I, like, threw the C4 on front of the Hummer, and my plan was to, like, drive the Hummer down there, park it right by the tank. Run out, and, like, you speedrun to get far away and detonate it, and, you know, blow all the shit up, because the tank was really fucking me over. And so, like, what happened was, as I was driving around, and, like, my fingers slipped and accidentally hit the boost button on my Hummer. I started going right for the tank, so I just, like, hit escape, you know, and dove out, like, instantly. I was like, "Ah, shit, this is bad." And, as the Hummer collided with the tank there, it just set off the C4, and everything just blew all the hell in it. And I was like, "Whoa, that was fucking rad!" Like, I didn't think it would do that, you know? Totally unexpected. I had moments like that in crisis, like, the first time I threw a grenade into a building, and it just brought the whole building down on top of some dude. Stuff like that. Unfortunately, a lot of that is stuff that you have to have the game turned up to higher settings to see. Like, there, like, especially the physics stuff. Like, if you just able to physics stuff, if your processor can handle it, then the game changes in that respect. Wow. But, I said, like, the serious brain fart. Yeah. But other than that, you know, I still kind of feel like this game is, like, wonderful. Five right there? Huh? You can't. No, no, no, I live close by. Oh, okay. Yeah, it's my fault. Oh, yeah, I know, something. No, we live right down the street. Okay. Thank you. But, you know, like, I was watching, I was watching it, I was taught on, uh... On red faction, on co-op. Yeah. And the way, you know, you guys were describing that game, and how the game was designed, to sort of, like, give you all these tools to have fun with. I was thinking, like, man, if crisis were designed like that, if it wasn't trying to do such linear campaigns. And some... At some point, crisis does give you that option, and those are the parts that are really fun. Like, a lot of reviewers, when they played through it, said that the first step of crisis is inspired. Like, it's some of the best shooting we've had on the PC in forever. It's in it. After the aliens show up, and everything goes icy, that the game takes, like, a serious barrel roll downhill. And that's because it becomes a linear game. Well, it's not even necessarily, it's partially that, but it's also that the aliens are generally kind of, like, really dumb, compared to the fighting the Korean guys. I don't know, they're just not challenging a lot of times, because they're not even shooting at you. They're just, like, jumping at you and stuff, and that's not very, you know, it's not the same. Yeah. Like, my own incompetence created, like, one of the tenses points in time for me in crisis, which is where I missed with my last rocket and didn't kill this helicopter. And helicopters at that point are fucking hard when you're done. You're just running through the jungle from the helicopter. Right. And it was me running for, like, a good half an hour from this river. That happened to me, too. I was swimming a river running from this helicopter, like, jumping underwater, using speed to get away hiding by a tree. You're like Rambo, like, diving into the water, hoping that they don't see you. Yeah, I mean, like, and those moments, too, like, they definitely have their badass quality to them. Like, even when bullets are whizzing, like, when bullets whizz by you in crisis, it's so fucking rad. And, like, the sound, the crackle of the bullets as they, like, impact with the trees at all around you. I mean, I love that stuff. Like, they really do a great job of doing this really cinematic and immersive shooting. I just, I feel, you know, it can be in my own life of skills at the PC controls, but, like, I don't feel like the guys that empowered, like, when it takes, like, a burst of, like, five rounds to someone's face to kill them. It does, I mean, I think that in some ways, that's console shooters that have gotten you adapted to, oh, well, if you hit them in the right place, like, one of your shots. To be fair, in crisis, headshots will kill, guys, if you're, but if you're using it silenced, they're way weaker. Like, it has to be a non-silenced weapon. Ah, see, I am playing all silenced. As soon as shit hits the fan, they know you're there immediately. The first thing you should do is take it off. There's a lot of recoil as well. It's almost every weapon, and if you want to be totally accurate, you need to turn on strength to steady the barrel. Yeah, I have been turning on strength, but it doesn't seem like that's been really helping much. Like, it makes a big difference if you're, uh, you use strength and you are crouching or laying down, and you, like, you basically can't miss at that point. Ah, okay. Yeah. Yeah, I definitely had my moments where, like, I thought I had my rocket launcher just, like, dead on, you know, a homer that's parked in the distance or something, and it just, like, the rockets goes, like, shooting off, like, right above it. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I had a hard time sitting down and playing crisis for a long period of time, but playing it like in bursts. Yeah. Continue. What else have you been playing, Tyler? Um, I've been playing a lot of the beta for Uncharted. The multiplayer Uncharted's that's right. Which people can see you talking about on the upcoming co-op. Yeah, we did a co-op talk about it today, Greg Ford, and Jay Fresh as well, and, um, that's, you know, ultimately what we concluded from that talk was just, like, how unexpected and how good the multiplayer is. At, at, at the Stoke, you know, Uncharted just won the E3 Award, you know, like, Game of the Show by a bunch of people, and, like, at Stoke, because everyone is for the single player campaign, it's really refreshing and reassuring to know that there's going to be competent multiplayer content for the game. Both the co-op, single player, and the deathmatch, and, uh, forget the name of the other mode, but especially like, they're catching the flag mode. So, um, yeah, those are a lot of fun to play. It's a good thing. Okay. I don't know, have you guys played it at all? No, we should. Not only that, but we also need to give away codes. Yeah, since we haven't played it at all. If we were at the apartment, I would just start reading off codes right now. It's gonna be, like, good luck. Yes. Um, but, uh, yeah, hit it up. I can't let Tyler throw his food away. Yeah, 'cause, uh, yeah. You were a child. I also didn't play. Is that it? Wait, what, I mean, would you care to elaborate on why you enjoy it and try to chart it beta so much? Right, yeah, sorry. I got distracted. Yeah. You know, you know, you can also check the co-op talk next week, but, um, but basically, like, one of the more interesting things that it does different in most games that just try to do your... 'Cause it's only, like, deathmatch to capture the flag mode and the co-op mode, and that's it. And what really makes this interesting is it has, like, this level of platforming in it where it does all the uncharted, uh, climbing where you can climb on, you know, the rubble that's sticking out from the sides of buildings, uh, you know, jumping to ledge to get better shooting positions, and it includes the cover, which is really cool, like, a lot of games remove covers as soon as they let you, you know, go online. Like, the original Ghost Recon... True. Uh, I think, in a lot of ways, didn't the Ghost Recon use different, a different engine, from what's that for you? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm pretty sure it was. But you, I mean, you're right, it is nice to have a little... Oh, you can just do it. And, um, and so, and, and it's, um, it's got a really fast pace to it, like, all the characters run really fast, but... Does it take 8 million hits to kill someone? It, it does take a... you know, it does take a few... It depends, like, to the body, it does take a lot, but, like, if you get headshots, you know, they'll, they'll go down pretty quick. One of my biggest complaints was that, like, I, I, I felt like maybe grenades are too devastating. Like, they have too much of, like, of a blast radius, and if you're in that radius, it's a kill. Uh, they've been patching over the last few weeks. I mean, that's also why they're doing a beta. Yeah, which, yeah, which is great. And, like, I felt like there were a few areas on the mask where I saw, like, people would get a sniper rifle in camp. Thank you. It's like, you do have the cover of the camp camp, like, that's really cool. There's some spots on the map that are just really easy to get behind cover, and if you've got a sniper rifle, it's really hard to flush them out. If you have someone just watching your back from another point, you know, like, you got triangulated fire on. Um, but yeah, you know, ultimately, it's just really surprising. It's really a surprising mode. I guess we can talk more about that. Next week, when we all played, I'm supposed to play with Tyler last night, but I did not get a chance. We're supposed to play tonight, too, aren't we? Was that the plan? We could. It's really fun. It's really fast to play. Like, getting games really quick and the games are all over-relatively, you know, not too quick, but... So I think we'll, uh, I guess, uh, we'll just do what we've been playing and then some letters, probably. Just keep it, like, an hour-long podcast. That's gonna be longer than that. Well, just, we'll see. Which is fine. People like long-long podcasts. Uh, have you ever been playing anything else? You know, just a hitman. I really still love it in that game. I'm really glad. I was a little old. I had some, uh... Oh, yeah. Some pre-date jitters before a game club started for hitman. It was an excellent recommendation. I love it. Um... Occasionally, people like Matt Leon, who enjoyed nothing more than pooping all over hitman. No, it's not. From what I understand, all the other hitmans were kind of worth pooping on. Not really. I mean, like, in those games, for when they came out, were... Okay, but playing them now would be bad. Uh... Not hitman contracts. Hitman defends for something... No, hitman. The Simon Assassin would probably be a little too much. Like, there were some really weird control choices. Like, if I remember correctly, like, sniper rifles would mirror controls in some strange way to make them hard to use on purpose. Hmm. Um... Hitman contracts is a lot of really great set pieces, and that's where they weren't a lot of lessons for blood money. [laughter] And the last level is, like, the ending of the professional. Where you're in a hotel room and, like, all these squats. So rushing up. It's warm and, like, you have literally, like, 30 seconds from the start of the mission until, like, squats, warms, and it tells you that. And then the mission is just, like, kicking ass. It's to get away. Um, and that's actually what happened. That takes place after the opera household and blood money. Like, when they talk about, "It's good to see you back in your feeding end 47." It's because, like, he... you were shot in a hotel and you were fucked up. And, like, you have to escape from that. When he shot, how does he recover from that? Does he do surgery on himself? Like, a mad ass. I think that the agency has a surge income visit him, but then he's recovering in the hotel, and the SWAT team is enrolling. Uh, okay. Anything. Uh, do we want to take a break really quick and now we're back with some mutters? Yeah. Well, we don't have to take a real break. We can just take a... Well, how's it got to pee? Oh. Yeah, we're taking a real break, then. Yeah. Hell yeah. ♪ To be blue, Spanish sky ♪ ♪ Then my back and watch clothes roll by ♪ ♪ I've got the time to wonder why ♪ ♪ She left me ♪ ♪ It's a slow sense, many songs ♪ ♪ I knew the words, but I sang them wrong ♪ ♪ The one I love is left and gone ♪ ♪ Without me ♪ All right. Let's take back Odin's fear. Oh, yeah? Or Muramasa. Yeah. Let's see. My question, if I pose one, is how does a filmmaker become a video game cinematographer? This fucking mother. And this is from Alex. And this job must not be in high demand since I can think of very few games that take the post sequences as if they are filmed with conventional equipment. Moreover, do you guys think the games and movies will begin to mirror each other's art forms? Or am I just tuned into the collective wet dreams of directors such as Peter Jackson and James Cameron? So. I mean. Tune in to collective wet dreams. Yeah, but as far as becoming a video game cinematographer, I don't know, maybe even doing like. There are cinematic directors, which sort of function is like conceptors, managers and cinematographers. I mean, I don't know. A lot of studios have those in-house doing their cutscenes and then a lot of companies are moving to outsourcing their cutscenes. Yeah, but then you think about some games like look at Uncharted 2. There is definitely some kind of cinematic directing going on like during gameplay. Not only that, but I mean also unchartered like outsources their cutscenes like to an outside studio that do them. So which are arguably a more likely place for them to experiment with cinematography right now. But I don't know. I mean, that's a hard question to answer. I would guess you would just have to like try to find studios that really have a, that place a lot of value and like an artistic approach. And hit them off. So this next thing is from Ivan. So you have to sit in it on the way home? All right. We'll end it with, we'll end it with a positive one. Which is Andy from San Diego, although he wrote Andy form San Diego. I think that might have been me though because I'm an idiot. That was a distinct possibility. All right. Hello to the Eat Sleep Gaming Army. I just wanted to inform you that fat penis changed the way me and my friends interact. After an explanation of how and when to use the phrase fat penis, we all found that it greatly improved the flow of our conversations. Whenever those pesky awkward pauses come up while we hang out, a well placed fat penis will always bring out a laugh and keep the conversations going. We also branched out of penises and now with tiny tits and mighty midgets. So fat penis is always the funnest. Thanks again for introducing all of us to the socially awkward icebreaker that is fat penis. PS death doll leprechauns for they hate all of it is fat penis. Wait. So they went with mighty midget instead of like the more obvious slim vagina? I don't know. We always just said midget hand job. That was another one. Midget hand job. Yeah. That was often our sign off for the phone. Dildos also comes in the play quite often. Yeah. Dildos. Which is a metal aqua lip reference. Have you never seen metal aqua? Yeah. That's okay. Never like the entire season. So I guess it's going to... I like them. Okay. I guess that's going to wrap it up for us. Next week we're hoping to have a one up sold copy editor. Jason Mosin, who is responsible for the fine little lookovers on things that you read in a EGM and GFW and whatnot. So hopefully we'll have him on next week to talk about like what he thinks is wrong with games writing. Which is kind of like, you know, we can blabber about that all we want. But getting Jason's perspective on it will be really enlightening because Jason's actually a really, really, really intelligent copy editor with a lot of experience. So people were asking when the deadline is for famous songs? Let's say by the, by next Monday. Really? Yeah. I thought we said we wanted to pick my episode 25. Uh, I mean, it's just we already have quite a few. Alright, let's say the Centennial episode. Fine, the Centennial episode Bex, episode 25. That's... So by episode 24. It's the time. By episode 24 because we'll use it in the 25th one in some way, shape, profession. Maybe we'll, maybe we'll play some of them. That's just thinking we can have like a time where we're all sitting in the room at the boom box or something. Yeah, we've got to. 'Cause they're so good. Some of them are so good. Yeah, people deserve to hear them even if we don't pick them. Um, so yeah. Thanks for listening to the podcast. You can find us at, you can find Anthony at twitter.com/chefmoney.
