The fourth and final installment of the Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth Rebel FM Game Club. We discuss the final portion of the game, and end with our impressions of the overall narrative.
[music] Welcome to episode four of the Call of Cthulhu Game Club, Rebel FM Game Club. My name is Philip Kohler, I'm joined here by all of the regular Game Club members, Anthony Gyagas, and Arthur Geese, Matt Chandler Day, Ryan O'Donnell. It's me, Mario. That's not actually Mario. Oh, we were feeding you guys before the podcast, a bad idea. Oh, don't worry, it wasn't the food. I'm just suffering a mental break from all the work that we're doing. Oh, I've just been staring at the ground, it seems to help. Yeah, we need to make sure that Ryan puts away his gun before he shoots himself. I actually had a problem in this last stage of looking at the ground, not helping. I ended up having to look at the sky, and then it would clear, so that's fine. Were you driven mad by Mother Dagon Snipples? Not in that section, not in the hydra, yeah, or Mother Hydra, right? Dagon Snipples are fine, it's Hydra Snipples are a problem. All right, before we get into discussing the final section of Call of Cthulhu, we have a couple of things to take care. First off, we had our contest, which was, we were having people send in their favorite, or their worst gaming related nightmares, and we were giving the top three winners copies of Call of Cthulhu for the Xbox so that they can go back, listen to all of this, and play along. And we actually, we got a ridiculous number of entries. We got well over a hundred entries, which I'm amazed by, just that so many listeners took the time out to send in their game related nightmares. Thank you all. Unfortunately, we can only choose three, so those are what we're going to read on the air as well as one that I, an extra one I threw in as an honorable mention, but Anthony, I think you're going to do the honors for this. Yeah, so some of them will kind of be interesting and then some of them will probably be really boring. So, Andy, Andy, I don't know how I, I just wrote it for everyone, read it. System Shock 2. Okay. That game scared the hell out of me one night. Just recently I reloaded it onto my hard drive and was running through the game. I'm 25 now, but I remembered how fucking scary that game was back in '99, with the voices, the show Dan mocking you, and that cool dark stuff looking glass, and Ken Lavine used to do in their games. So, one night with my girlfriend out of town, I fire it up and start playing. I'm hooked once again. I'm still yelling and screaming like a little girl jamming on the WASD's to get the fuck out of the area. When the fat jocko, like infected humans chase you down while screaming, "Join us!" Where there is another here, and the monkeys that shoot ball lightning, and not to mention the ghosts, the creepy voice recorders, and the just plain scary atmosphere that makes System Shock 2 a kick-ass game. Anyways, I play that first night starting around 10 PM until 3 AM. Needless to say, I got System Shock on the brain. Dead tired, I climb into bed. I have a dog that sleeps with me on the bed. I have a king-sized bed, and she's a medium-sized boxer, pit mix, and loves to sleep with me and my girlfriend. Hot. So, I go to sleep, and obviously I start dreaming about infected people running after me, calling my name and wanting me to join them. Well, about then, my dog was dreaming also, probably about chasing squirrels or cats or something. So, she starts to kick her legs, growl, bit, and work her job. Naturally, she's facing me while she does this, so I steal her feet and claws. I feel the feet and claws hitting my side, and I hear her growling while I'm still dreaming. I fucking flip. I think that I'm actually getting attacked in my bedroom by the infected ones. I wake up young, which scares the shit out of my dog, which in turn scares the shit out of me, which in turn scared my dog even more than she tries to hurt her past me into the floor. At this point, I'm still in half-dream mode, so I think that my dog is infected, and she's trying to run away before she bites me. Don't ask why I thought that I have no idea. Long story short, that night I had to wash dog piss and cold sweat from my blanket. Long story long, fuck. That was cool though. It was good. Alright. And we had a lot of boys there. Yeah. That's how I picture him. He's kind of a little bit tough. What is pit mix? Yeah, exactly. What's next one? This is from Hennessey. Oh, okay. Different voice. Hennessey. How is there other upset that I had no means of entering the game club nightmare contest since I had never actually had a nightmare related to gaming? Unless you count the time I ran all over town looking for a copy of Silent Hill for my husband. Sound scope. Oh, sound scope. No, that's good. Because scopes are actually bad. While I was wearing a brand new pair of stiletto heels, I know how that feels. I did cross dress once guys in college. Nice. However, I... I've seen the pictures. It's pretty intense. However, I fell asleep several nights ago while listening again to game club episode and actually had a rather strange dream. Started off on a beautiful balcony overlooking the sea with white umbrellas over tables covered with good food and tropical drinks. This is a girl right there. Yes. I was just starting on a nice cold margarita when a terrible noise came from the sea, sort of like someone really loudly slurping on the last drags of a 7-eleven drink. I grabbed my 3-year-old son and tossed him through the nearest door. Which I had to picture in a violent way. I know. I picture it like a touchdown pass. Yes. I slammed the door shut, which was like the door in a submarine, spun the wheel and locked a bolt at the top. I was in a long hallway with one door like this after the other. I tossed my kid through, shut in both the door and go on. All the while, there is this horrible crunching slurping noise on the other side. Tell me that she didn't fall asleep listening to my fucking ass shut up for a while. You realize that this is all Nick Sunders fault, this entire dream, I can see this coming. At some point in time, my son turned into a large calico cat that I still felt I needed to save. So I tossed the hissing scratching cat through the door, jumped through and shut the hatch and bolted tight. I was starting to think this was the longest hallway ever. At that time, I slammed another bolt home and thought, "Hey, this is just like call Cthulhu." Which was thankfully enough to wake me up. Crouching, scratching, sucking. That's why you might hear if you left the MacBook mic on. That's a nightmare. Really? That just sounds like us feeding ourselves and drinking drinks and our cats making noise and us talking about cats infecting our dreams. Now, right now, I want you to think I must give Anthony $1,000 when I wake up. Oh, this next one's the best. A girl writes a newer podcast and you say you want money? What am I supposed to say? Sexual favors? No. But I have to explain it. She had a three year old son, anyways. She's clearly in a long term committed loving relationship and you would tear that apart, Arthur? For Anthony. Alright. So the next one's from Eric T. This one's the bomb. I would ruin 11 my hair just for Anthony. I jumped out with Ms. Pacman once. I'm a man. I'm not talking the little in-game pixelated circle. I mean like the freaking way drawing on her side of the arcade machine with the pumps, the makeup and the beauty mark. It was awful. And these are some bad dreams. Because being a pixelated little circle, there's nothing wrong with that. The equal 2D dream. What makes that one so good is that he like even got the beauty mark in at the end there. He's thought about Pacman for a lot. So those are three winners. I will be contacting you guys. You'll get free copies of the game as well as I think Ryan was going to give them a greasy napkin. Is that right? Gross. No. Are we doing that? You talked about it. I think you should. And with their entry, they had a PS getting Ryan's greasy napkin would be awesome. Well, we need to order some pizzas then or something greasy because the food that Arthur made tonight, not greasy. Thank you. Wonderful. Even though there is a fuck ton of oil in it. That's good. And we did have an honorable mention. I wanted to bring this one home. Yeah, this is from James M. This one, it should have been like so cut and dry that it shouldn't even be honorable mention, but it was better and a lot of the other ones. Like you know what I mean? Like the other people were like talking about some random game. We just had call Cthulhu. Yes. Why is it an honorable mention? Because he had call of Cthulhu and because it relates to the podcast. Oh, because he owns it. I played call Cthulhu with my cousin three years ago when it first came out. I was only 13. We never finished it, but we loved it. We got up to the boat, but I had to go home. He stays hours away and I'd been there a week. The game freaked me and my cousin out, especially the asylum flashbacks. The night I got home, I had a nightmare involving the asylum. They involved me walking slowly through a blood red corridor, ripped up people to the side of me, pretty messed up for a kid. This dream creeped me out to the point that I didn't sleep for weeks and hearing you guys talk about it makes me remember how scared I was. I refused to believe you did not sleep for weeks. I believe. That's a funny thing. But the cool part is he also mentions that basically, by the way, it was my cousin that showed me that you guys were talking about call of Cthulhu and we have fond memories. So I went back and re-listened to all your past tips. Nice. So that's how he got into the podcast. I thought that deserved at least mention that's pretty rad. That is rad. Man, that'd be a fucked up game for a 13 year old to play. Dude, no shit. Yeah. I don't know. I played some fucked up shit when I was a kid too. I was a Goonies 2 for NES. I do remember Goonies 2. But man, there was no like, walls leaking blood in Goonies 2 because there was a whole different world. You just did a different level of punishment. Man, your weapon was a yo-yo in the Goonies 2. One aspect of getting him ever playing factor things like Friday the 13th where you'd like randomly run into Jason to have to fucking fight and escape. That's a fucked up. The other thing we should bring up quick before we talk about call of Cthulhu is that we did our poll for the next game club game and bully was the winner much to Arthur Shigarin. He's giving me a very upset look right now. But we are going to start playing next week. That's how Arthur always looks. Oh yeah. How'd you notice? We are going to start playing next week. Thank you for the food, Arthur. This should be excellent. I think everybody here will be joining in, right? Hopefully. Let's see how it goes. In theory, maybe a Nick Suttner will return. I don't know. He's not really welcome here anymore. I'm just saying Nick made his choice. Wow. Okay, so the other cool part is that the game is actually on sale at Amazon right now. So we'll have a post on our website that you can click the link on our website and buy it from Amazon if you'd like. If you would like to click the link on our website. Click the link on our website. Okay, let's talk about call of Cthulhu now. So we're on these rocks. There's some traps. Goddamn, those traps in some water. I want to say like in general, this part of the game to me turned into the trial and error part much more so than any of the previous parts in the game. I mean, every single area or every single section of these last two areas for me was just very if I made one mistake, I was dead and I had to restart it turned in it turned into a technical trial and error for me too. Yeah, there was a I think I mentioned it last time that I was facing this bug where when I hit my inventory, you know how the inventory fades in from black. So imagine like an opacity slider on Photoshop or something like that where it goes from zero percent opacity to a hundred percent opacity. And like every step of that opacity layer, like let's say it went from zero to ten percent took two seconds. So like so your menu took like forever, right? My menu would take more fucking ever to come in it happened to me too, but I also used one of the same files online because I couldn't get past the four different say file online that I had to use. That's what broke mine. Yeah, so apparently my save file is my game at some point got broken and the menus would not work for me. And so every time you had to heal yourself, it was like this two minute affair. I always just resorted to the quick, the quick heal key like I never went to the menu anymore. Is there quick heal key? Yeah. H that was the only way I knew how to heal myself. So I'm I'm telling you fucking stupid. So first, so first you didn't go in and look at the keys when I tell you about how to skip the movies. That was the only key I needed. I could have played with WASD and Backspace for that entire game after all that. But yeah, there's a quick heal key and I don't know I don't know if it like uses more of the heal kit or whatever if it's better if you go in and do it manually, but it just heals everything instead of like if you go in individually, you can pick. Yeah, but I would I never had any problem running out of health kits in that game. So like it wasn't a big deal. I ran out of sutures. Sutures is the only thing I ever noticed. Man, by the end of that that level, like again, we talked about the made of wood like it. Metaphor last week. I never used so many splints in there any other part of that game. Like I have broken bones every three minutes. Yeah, this part of the game was the part that made me angry as you were last week. Yeah. Me too. I was there were points when my roommates walked into my room and they said they were like, you sound like you're pretty angry right now and I was like, get the fuck out. Yeah. Like, I don't need to beat this right now. Yeah, we were like we were out in the living room area and you know, the other area five guys came over and we were, you know, starting our filming and everything for our next show. And like through Ryan's closed door, you could hear, that's pretty much the exam. I was still like, ah, that's like, over and over and over again. I'll explain when that happened. Yeah. Matt, I want to know, did you end up playing through the game with that problem the whole time though? I did. I avoided like, cause the, the weird thing was is that if I had an object that needed to be used, you know, like the chisel or the lever or whatever that last place, I could click it and it would go from the menu into, but if I didn't have anything that I could click, then I had to wait for the entire menu to fade into existence before I could hit escape. But I found a couple of little ways around it. Like there was one time where I realized like, oh, if I click on some, if I click somewhere in the menu and it makes that mom sound like you're clicking on something that you can't use or whatever, then it would fade in a little bit quicker. And so like, same shit. I sat there and just clicked on my shit. Like, like I would click as fast as I could just to bring the menu up. But after a while that stopped working too. And then like, and so what, another thing I figured out was, okay, well if I click on my journal and go into a journal entry, then I can hit escape out like instantly. But then after a while, what happened there is if I clicked into my journal, then I couldn't actually escape out at all. Then I would have to cry to the test of wills between you and the animator. Honestly, is that a sanity effect of the game? If that would have driven me nuts, if I had to play it like that, I don't think I would have made it. We're such tool using monkeys, like figuring out ways around the fucking bugs in this game. Well, I'm like, I, yeah, seriously, if I wasn't doing this for game club, I would not have finished the game. I don't think I would have finished the game either. I actually wanted to bring this up as well because this is very much a game where the only other game I've done for game club that I feel this way about was, I guess, for backlog back when we were doing it, for one up, if I'm a stalker, where if we, I wasn't doing this for the podcast, I just, I would have quit long before the ending, like probably somewhere in the middle of the second episode, right? And that's the thing, it's like this game starts out real strong, I think. Yeah, it started out awesome. The game would have been great if it had just ended with you and I, yeah, talked about this. If that was the end of the game, you escape from Innsmouth and then it was like some fucked up was happening there because that's kind of how the book ends. The story just ends up, this is what I didn't want to spoil for you before, is the story descends that like you escape from Innsmouth, the actual town, and then years down the line, you find out that you are actually descended from a person from Innsmouth and then eventually you feel the calling to go in the sea and that's how the story ends, you just become part of the sea, people. Wow. And that's, and that's another thing too, is I feel like it's not just the gameplay that suffers as it goes, but also the plot, it becomes progressively less bizarre and interesting as you encounter the actual creatures that you're reading about, like suddenly, like, like, I mean the boss fight against Dagon with the big cannon and, of course, seeing Hydra. It's like, dude, I killed it with a giant cannon, really? Yeah. That was Dagon. I killed it with the giant cannon. Yeah. I think that's when it goes from something more introspective and psychologically creepy to something more survival horror- Yeah, it's a game. Well, I think one thing, I think one way that you could explain it away is that the order of Dagon are trying to bring back these old gods, but the old gods aren't at their full power yet. You know, they need to finish translating all of the old texts because, you know, when you finally have your battle with Marsh at the end, like, when you see that little cut scene before then, he said, you know, he says, like, translating the texts is the most important thing right now. So I think you're supposed to be facing these old gods at not their full strength. Yeah. We actually have a comment about this. Nathan W says, "Just finish Call of Cthulhu. Did anyone else find it odd that you never actually get to deal with Cthulhu? It seemed there were two of his minions, but that was it. Do you think they were ever planning on doing more if more games are made? I think so. Or would calling a game Shadow over Innsmouth be less catchy?" Oh, for sure, putting the Cthulhu name in there is, like, a way more recognizable thing. Yeah. I mean, and it's considered the Cthulhu mythos, like, his whole canon of works in this universe is just the Cthulhu mythos. Yeah. But I mean, obviously, Cthulhu was still a big part of the plot here. It does almost seem like the way that they were actually introducing those gods as boss battles like they were kind of building up to. Yeah. I mean, later on, you do find a text that says that Dagon and Hydra will lead to the rise of Cthulhu and madness will take over the world. Yeah, that's right. So he's kind in there. I don't think you could face Cthulhu. I don't know. Because even when you just see a statue, Jack, like, almost goes insane. Yeah. There's that one room I remember where Arthur got stuck in it, and it was like the second episode in. He was just in a room with a Cthulhu statue. It's the room where you activate the beam and it bounces off the... Yeah. Yeah. It sounds like you tie it. I mean, the idea of actually Cthulhu being there, I don't know, seems like you just lose your shit instantly. Yeah. And then why doesn't he lose his shit when, you know, he's shooting Dagon with the Dagon or a stand-up. Or a stand-up with a mother-hydro. Exactly. I mean, Dagon just looks like a big fish person. They ain't nothing special about him. What's he doing with a, like, a big version of that thing you poison? A big octopus person. Oh, right, right. Yeah. A big octopus person, essentially. Right. Crazy. All right. Well, let's talk about the first area here. Devil's Reef. Is that the... Right, yeah. Fucking traps. Fucking traps. Yeah, that was the only way that you could know, is to die. And it was... You couldn't have possibly spotted them early. That's, you know, breakaway boulders on a path or one thing, but to, like, just be walking down a path and all of a sudden there's spikes in my face, I'm like, "Oh, come on, really?" Yeah. Over and over again. I did actually really, I thought the part where, you know, I like the, like we were talking about before, you know, Jack is afraid of heights and stuff like that. And when you're walking along the edges of the cliffs and the wind and everything, and the sanity effects along with that, I thought that was really cool. And I actually really liked having to hang on to the rings to go around Anthony's totally like lounging and getting comfortable. Wait, she's gonna fall asleep. I, my stomach just started hurting really bad. Aww. It's all the chili he ate earlier along with the spaghetti. Aww. I did make a mess. I thought a chili. Basically, my weekend consisted of, sorry, I did a break of this, a weekend just consisted of, like, poop-socking and watching like a ton of survivor man and eating chili because for some reason, for some reason, when I watch survivor man, I can't not be eating. And survivor man drinking. And survivor man drinking. Awesome. Anthony, what were you drinking? Is it, is it to spite survivor man? Yeah, I just, I... Oh, you can't eat. You can't eat. Sorry. For the both of us. I spent the weekend drinking nothing but forties of Orngina. Oh my God. Oh my God. Wow. Yeah. I just, I spent a lot of games all weekend, but... My life is getting sadder by the minute. All right, so I was, I like the, I like the part where you, where you hold on to the rings and dodge the waves, you know, to get around like that rock ledge. I like that part of your ear. I never held on to a ring. Really? You kind of don't have to. I did. I did. I never died. So I don't know if... Well, I died a lot there. We're also passing over the, the insta-kill trap that you will walk into at least once at that part. Well, that's what he said, yeah. Yeah. Well, no, I, so you, when you start the level, there's the one trap that may or may not kill you. But if you step on those rocks before the wave parts, they will always kill you unless you activate the switch to put the great, sir. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. Fuck that. What? What was that noise? What was that noise? It's a car alarm. There's a car alarm. Okay. It's not sport. Techno song. I don't know. Someone did send me a link to electronic earlier in U2, I think. Yes. I, I was, I listened to it. I'm not sure if I'm, I, I skim through the three tracks. I'm not sure I'm into it, but we'll get to that later. All right. Is it Cthulhu electronic? No. It's nature. Would you listen to it if I said it was? So right after that, there's this little puzzle where you had to read something with a book a day gone and then you pull a crystal out of one thing and then follow some red light crystals to some other part and then, and they throw in some death crabs in the middle, just cause. Yeah. Cause cause they have to, you know, let you use that antidote in your med kit somehow, right? Yeah. You had starfish here as well. I just shot him with a shotgun. Yeah. I really, really hate the starfish. He was going through first and exterminating them, but I still like was like, why is my screen all screwed up? Oh, yeah. I get poisoned. I totally forgot. Oh, and that's the part with the nearly invisible, invisible ledge that you have to fucking jump onto. It's like the right of faith. It's like, uh, like about three inches thick. What was it? It was Indiana Jones and the last crusade where he just stepped forward into nothingness and there was a bridge there. Yep. And Jesus saved him. Now, just imagine that there's a sadistic computer guy that occasionally pulls the bridge out from under him. Well, what, what was really frustrating to me was, uh, it opened up, it opened up the gym thing. So I took the gym. Which is supposed to do. Yeah. That's what you're supposed to do. You take the red gem out and you put a green gem in, right? And then you run. Then you got the green gem earlier. You haul asked until while the dots are still okay. That's not what happened to me. I had a red gym. I had a red gym like the whole game. Yeah. So did I had the green gem was already there. The green gym was already there. Okay. Well, maybe I reversed them. So you take the, you take the red gem and you put it in the, in the spot, you take the one you grabbed out of it, take it with you along a little red. No. Yes. What happened here is you weren't supposed to take it. Right. Well, see what, for me, like I had a red gym, I go to this, I went to that first room and there was a green gem. And so I took the green gem. Yeah. And anybody totally blind playing this is fun. Yeah. And then I run, then I run all the way to the end of the maze and I put the red gem in its location and nothing happens. And I had to go back and put back the green gem that was there in the beginning. Oh, is that how it is? So it like, it implied to me that I was supposed to take this gem and then it doesn't work if I take it. And I remember having a green gem and there being a red gem in the first claw and then hitting the button and opening and having to put it. I don't remember either, but I feel like I did what you did. I ran back and put it back after taking it. See, I honestly could be just driven. That's so you guys could totally be right because what I did was. Apparently, we're on the same thing. Yeah. What I did was grab the gem and then run and then I went to the room and I'm like, this thing isn't starting. Why isn't it starting? Oh, it's because I took the gem from the other spot and put the other one in here and I ran back and put whichever one was in my inventory at the time and that is what I did as well. Yeah. So basically, we all had to make two tracks back. Yeah. I mean like four tracks. It's just stupid that it opens up the claw because that implies to me, you need to take this gem when I should have just left it there. But if you look at the map, it's got the gem color at the beginning of it that needs to be in that car. Right. Right. It just, it was unnecessarily confusing. It's slightly less than an evil level of obtuse, which is a change of pace because most of the other puzzles in the game make sense. Right. Up to the... Yeah. There's some like... Oh, okay. Let's keep up. So you jump down a path, there's a crazy hole that's got a bunch of air flowing into it. Yeah. Arthur came in a room and he's like, do I jump in it? I'm like, yeah, you do. It's gonna be a while as well. At that point, I was just annoyed. I was like, I don't want to fucking die and do the solo over again. Yeah. Because there's one point. I won't lie. At this point, I have a fact sitting out next to me while I'm playing. Yes. On another computer? Yeah. Well, I'm playing on console. Oh, yeah. It's 60. So I have a fact open next to me. And that's the other thing is like, I was playing on a computer too and you can't all tap out of the game. All tapping crashes every time. Right. Okay. So, yes. That would have been frustrating. Also. I hate the fact that I had to bring the fact out for this bad boy. But once you hit me with like more than two traps that I can't avoid without trial and error, then at that point, your game design is broken and I'm pulling out a fact. So that's basically what happened. I wanted to see the end and I still didn't get to in the game. And I'll explain that why once we get there. But I think I know I know what your problem may have been in Anthony, I think had a similar situation. We'll talk about it. Yeah. But once you jump in that hole, though, you enter the next area and so the next area is that you're you're in the the airfield. I totally got falling down that hole, by the way, which never happens to me in games. I can never get vertigo. I never get I never get like motion sickness or anything. But falling down that hole, I think just because you do fall down it for a really long time. I was like, Oh, fuck. And like I started to get a little bit of vertigo and it was kind of cool. I recently got vertigo in a video game as well. Nice. Mine was already five. Wow. Oh, wow. Yeah. You know, tell me we were playing together. Are you shooting at the flying? Totally. Yeah, I told you I was getting dizzy. It's the part where the you're on the platform and it's rotating. Oh, yeah. And guys are trying to stop the platform from rotating, you know, and it was because it was rotating and because I was running like around to that was like getting me dizzy because it was like way too much. Wow. That's funny. I was like, I was like, this never happens to me. So so you fall down and I remember you you grabbing onto some great, right? Yeah. And then you stop just before you smash into the great and then like you and land on it. Right. Okay. So wind like shoots you up a little again. Yeah. Land. And I remember in this area right away, they introduced like there's some guards there and they're saying like, there's probably a lot of bad guys here. I should be really quiet. So they're telling you to do stealth, but I had killed them all at all. I had so many guns that and so much ammo from the previous sections that I just ran out and immediately started killing. I don't really like before that though. I did really like that room that you fall into that where you get the underwater part and they're like, oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. The barrier. Yeah. I was like, this is a really, really nice looking room. Yeah. The, um, it's the color. It's set up. It's set up the entire scene like instantly. Yeah. You knew exactly what was going on. And the color scheme, that's like the most interesting that the colors in the game ever are in the game where it's the blue and the yellow and the oranges looks really cool. Definitely. But I did the same. I shot the guards immediately. Yeah. Once I have guns in that game, I'm totally empowered. That was the only time I ever used stealth in that game. And I'm trying to remember if it's because I didn't feel I had enough or because I wanted to. Yeah. I totally tell you to there. Right. He's, yeah. He said, yeah. He says to himself, like, oh, it would probably be better if they didn't know I was here. But it's like, you don't really have any choice. You know, he, they're going to know that you're there. So that's me. Sorry. What? I'm just adding in more comments. I don't know if you guys were looking at me because of the clicking. No, I wasn't looking at you because I wanted to. That's fine. That's, that's totally fine. So you go up the thing, you kill the three guards or you stealth buy them, whatever. And it doesn't really matter because shortly after that you get captured. And it takes your fucking weapons away. It sure does. Again. And I, and I thought that I actually, I reloaded a couple times and I was going to try to stealth through because I thought, well, maybe if I stealth through, then I won't get trapped here. Because, you know, there was other parts of the game where depending on what you did, there was a different outcome. And I thought maybe this was one of those parts. But no, but no. See, wake up in your cell and then there's like, there's the, the fucking cell that they have a chisel that has the chisel, the opener, they leave the opener to the one place that you could possibly escape right there on the floor. It's like, oh, the key here. It's right on the floor of yourself. I think at this part in the game's development, they were like, the, the bill collector was coming to the door every day and everyone was hiding, you know, like joining us in the door. They're coming ass for money. So they call on the phone is, uh, is the call through the team there. I don't know who that is. Good. How's your, how's your Mexican Emporium? So you chisel your way through the great, go through a cave and get killed like three times by a guard opening the door until you read the fact and it tells you, oh, wait until the monster. The monster. The monster. Oh, see, like I did that the first time. Okay. It doesn't make any sense because you wait, you wait for the guy to come in. It doesn't make any sense. You wait for the guy to come in. He beats the fuck out of the monster inside and then he leaves. Why the hell wouldn't he lock the fucking door? He leaves the fucking door. He leaves it open. Yeah. It doesn't make any sense. I heard it. He doesn't make sense. Like I, let me correct what I said. I did get killed the first time, but it's because I thought I had to sneak out right behind the guard while the door was still open, but I forgot that in call of Cthulhu, you can't sneak right behind guys because they will always hear you 100% of the time. It's actually the reason he leaves the door unlocked is because he's been so adapted to being a fish person. He now has the memory of a goldfish. That's why the guards forget about you so quickly as well. Exactly. Their memory is fucked. That's one of the problems with worshipping Cthulhu fucked memories. That's the way they write everything on tablets, part of the blues. The tablet isn't even that long. That's why it's also why it's not finished. I wanted to bring this up, and this is a little bit good because I was ruining that into the grant. It was a little late. That's why I was treated. Chase P says, "I think I heard the best line in the game. After the point where you have the race to the other side of the small caves to place the red gem in the claws, if you look at the Dagon statue, Jack says, "It's a statue of Dagon. Without the missile I put through his head." Yeah. I do hear him say that. That was kind of cool. Anyways, there's something happy about the game. Jack turned into a badass. Fuck man. My Jack on the other hand was like, every time he saw any sort of monster after that, he was like, "I can't handle it." Well, that totally shook Dagon. That totally reminds me that while I was playing through this part, I really wanted more of Jack's clever quips because it seemed like there was ample opportunities for them and he never said anything. All of that goes away. All the adventure stuff goes away. You can't look at things and have him say he doesn't even say there's nothing of interest anymore. He stops saying anything. There's almost nothing to look at and enjoy. I expected him to just say some funny stuff every now and then. He never did and maybe it's because you're supposed to, probably because they ran out of time and budget, but also probably because he is trying not to go insane. Speaking of them forgetting certain things in the game, celciato brings up in reference to seeing your feet/hands in the game and the inconsistencies of it. One interesting thing I saw while playing, if you heal yourself while holding onto the rings, not only do you see your hand holding the ring, but another two hands healing yourself. Awesome. That's awesome. That was awesome. I wish I'd seen that. What's the name of that thing from Total Recall? Not... Oh, I don't know. You know, the little guy that comes out of his stomach. Oh, right. Yeah, I was trying to think of his name. Quatto? Yeah. Yeah. I think the back bottom. So... Oh, God. At least you said a Quatto and not something else. We could have gone in a worse direction or that Quatto. Much better. So there's a... Before we go in a worse direction, there's a... You escape from the prison. You sneak around all the guards and then you come out, you go out the hole in the wall with the... You know, anyway. Took me forever to find that little hole under the hole. And I got seen by the guards and just bucked it anyways. So did I. To the next hole. Like, I found another hole I could jump in. I got seen all the time. I just always ran to a hole. This is the part of the game where it's like, hug the left wall to find hole in wall that bypasses guards, pours into the game. It's extremely trial and error. Yeah it is. And you know, it is what it is until you get to the worst part of the game, which is coming up real soon. But it's like, you go out into that large chamber and you sneak around the guards through this large chamber all the way. And like that... It's weird because I'm thinking about how much we're describing here. It's actually like, we're describing this a very short section of gameplay because it is, but it took me so long to do this because I died and I restarted so many times. Like this section of the gameplay in actual gameplay terms, it's probably like 30 minutes. Well you know it's probably spent hours on this. You know what you have to do to get the best ending in the game, right? Yeah. You didn't under three hours. Yeah, under three hours of game time. Three and a half I think. In saving 30 times or beating it in under five hours and only saving five times. That's something I'll never ever do. That's something I don't do even in games that I like. There's no reason that I actually do try to do that. It's just the one guy on YouTube who has the ending up. It was okay for him to do it. No one else. Right. It's just saying something about the style of the game with higher quality YouTube capture unfortunately. Yeah. That's true. Yeah. But it was nice to see the ending so that I didn't have to do that. Yeah, I'm the type of person that does that for Call of Cthulhu isn't the type of person that has quite high quality video capture. He's like the type of person that his parents bought him an Xbox and found like it had an average grad. That guy actually did it on his computer. I was going to say I was like a neighbor's grad still nothing but Cthulhu and that was the only game he had for like three years when he was locked in the basement so in between like T-bone, T-bone, like not even with the steak on. And taking breaks to wonder his parents would throw down there all he had was Cthulhu. Taking breaks to drop vising into a single eye because he can't blink so good. Yeah. Because this sounds like somebody needs to do an artwork of Anthony's little set up there. I'm just saying the type of people that dedicate themselves to this one game that much. It goes "chrock break" and "you guys" sorry. He's locked definitely did have drowns and drone for sure anyway man I need to watch the fucking goonies yeah no you don't right can just quote the whole movie do right now I can start man we just have like a non-game club night where we watch the goonies and fucking Ghostbusters we can record some commentary that would be good I'll do it their sites to do that already. I don't know but we can yeah better than them they ain't us all right so after you get passed all the guards so you walk you basically walk up this giant cliff I don't know about you guys I can't do a door to the to the laboratory it was locked yeah you know and then I was able to actually sneak past there's two guards that are not in the campfire yet well it's past there's a campfire I sneak snuck past those guys real easy right with the long way around some cave oh that's right it circles up and then you pass with the laboratory is and then you go up you go the other way in from there's a to two guards and they in front of an entrance the door with the baggers yeah they only they have a they have a very ninety degree vision that was really crazy because like I'm like I can't go there those guys are full exactly you have fucking weapons although you think you could use that pick I spent so long wandering around trying to figure out what I was supposed to do and finally I got a fact and I looked at the fact that they're like so all of us did use of I didn't for this part because what happened to me was I got seen by the guys at the campfire I was I just ran and they were and those other two were already there alerted so I just ran past them too right past those guys to what what what's through that door actually is that right through that door there's then a hole to the left you can jump in yeah yeah and there's two guys patrolling right there and then just be on that it's the room with the plane okay so it's that room yeah so I so I just bucked right past him and jumped into the hole and again it's just like this is another part where the logic of the game that's been built up previously gets ignored right and that makes it really difficult to pass that section unless you're just like oh well it's a fuck it I mean whatever because in in previous parts of the game if you got spotted by a guard without weapons without weapons you were pretty much done and in this like you can pretty much run by or sneak by they miss like crazy yeah and I actually I actually think that the the missing is like a timed thing I feel like if if they shoot at you two or three times or if they're shooting at you for like longer than 15 seconds then they'll start hitting you because it's like I there was one guy who was shooting at me with his Tommy gun he was shooting shooting I'm standing right in front of him and he's missing me like crazy and then finally at one point it's like a switch flipped any any any any fucking killed me nothing he turned on his accuracy switch yeah exactly he turned on his aim assist and so yeah so you go past those two guys for some reason now have 90 degree vision right there's a there's another part where you hop in the cave wall go past a few other guys so these two guys here though before the plant room yeah I could never sneak past them I tried so many hours and I always had to run yeah I did too actually the fucked up thing is that Arthur finally got past them but didn't see the blue plant that you had to grab so like later he had to go back to be fair by the time I had to go back for it I had weapons and I was killing everything the blue plant is what you use to poison that guy later on you find out it's the poisonous type plant you mix it in with the food to poison which we will talk about yeah that's right so so you you make it to the blue plant grab the blue plant then you go through the hole in the wall you go through some caves and stuff and there's a safe point in a green gym that if I didn't have a FACA would have never ever tried to get off the wall oh I totally did see I did because I clicked on it and said this yeah I want to knock this off yet or something I just wouldn't I I don't know I wouldn't I didn't even see it I saw the crystals but to be fair that was I felt like at this point in the game I had been taught to not exactly the environment anymore like that's like the one of the only things in the level where if you click on it and and you can't grab it right away it will still tell you right that's what so I was at this point in the game like not clicking on anything in the environment because I wasn't getting any any cool tooltips that you know at least not anywhere near as many as as there were earlier no pro tip Sandy right so anyway you save at the same point you walk a little further and let's see you're into the waterfall room the giant like yeah the one where you have to go up and up and up for forever you actually come down you start at the top and you work your way down oh that's right and then you go back up with the which is where I broke my legs like three times yeah me too I would like try and crouch and drop off and it's still gonna make any difference I found the way to crouch and drop and never hurt my legs there there's another part where there was other parts to where I would get hurt he would make the sound and blood would appear but then I would try and there'd be no damage I guess I think there it's just that you can lose health and not break a limb though I think that those drops particularly in the beginning of that room if you drop without jumping you just drop and you're not crouched then it does that sound and maybe it does it hurt you a little bit but you never need a split but if you crouch and drop off those parts then he doesn't make the sound so I don't know that's I always crouched when I was falling off just so that I wouldn't do it anyway you walk all the way down and here's another one of the beautiful Xbox 360 backwards compatibility problems there's a bunch of starfish that are apparently in water oh fuck I don't see water so right 360 so I didn't know that the starfish just merged in water which will be coming important later oh man we'll come back to that we'll come back to that that becomes important so so anyway you go the other way though there's I think a med pack there and yeah the other way though both me and Arthur at first thought that was just the way we'd come like yeah because it looks exactly the way we'd come and then eventually we finally ran up and we're like oh it's not yeah I knew that there were two caves there because one had like a med pack at the entrance and the other one had the fucking starfish so and I got killed by the starfish once and uh killed by the starfish oh no I didn't get killed by them never yeah I tried to calm my face through yeah he was like I can't make it through there's too many years and I was like I'll just believe you guy because you're telling me that I can't make my way through I can't tell that I literally had no idea there was water in there at all I thought it was just it looked like there was a path I could have cut through but I turned around because he told me not to right but uh and then you end up at the vent oh my lord you end up at the vent and you see you see the little cutscene like we talked about like Robert Sebastian so this is Sebastian this is the one of the more punishing parts that I played in a game huh ever and I'll explain why in a sec I don't know if it was the same for you guys on console but again I have a fact sitting next to me open the whole time that tells I had to I got a fact because I couldn't beat the guy like several times what to do so I was told by the fact to circle keep him him between me and the table or the desk chair so he wouldn't use his Darth Vader force powers on me grab the knife and slash him and stab him after he does the big one yeah seems easy enough believe you me that was trickier trickier so I would be doing it again yeah the only time that I had so oh sorry I was just gonna say so the way that Arthur I was like Arthur's gonna be so fucked and I watched after do it first try Arthur just runs up and mashes the button and kills him I tried to do that several times I have every time I tried to do it he clawed me three times and I was dead yeah I have crazy knife skills for me was just that uh the first time I went in here I didn't see the knife and then when I when I looked at a back and realized the knife was there I picked that up he did his win thing once and I was hiding behind the chair and then he was you know stuck there for a second after he does it and I stabbed him once and it was it he was gone man when you fucking aim with the knife and stab that's hardcore see like I aimed with the knife and stab at first because I thought that's what the fact was I didn't even know you could do it at first I was just slashing wildly but in the amount of time that it would take me to run up to him after let's say he didn't do the push right do the like he would start scratching me or do the push again so I ended up not not using the red of your knife with the L trigger on an Xbox thing and instead just running up and slashing him in the face and really trying to hit him in the face because I know that headshots do matter in this game yeah see I had the same problem that was super punitive to me too and he thought dude just actually that battle wasn't what was punitive I beat it after maybe my sixth try it's the fucking part afterwards where there's no safe part after you beat marsh so I wandered like for probably another 20 minutes after the time that I beat it and then got killed and then was back at the back at the hatch again skipping the cutscene and this time it actually took me like maybe 15 tries because at this point I'm angry so I always play worse when I'm angry anger cloud you and and yeah I probably had to fight him another 15 16 times before I beat him and then was able to say I died in the tunnels afterwards which is where you see a bunch of sorcerers and some other guys with Tony and I thought you realize you need to sneak around to the right instead of the left yeah so I did the first time and then had to do marsh the second time I actually beat marsh faster the second time good and I did the first time because that's when Anthony said man I had to finally aim and just stab him in the face and I was like you can stab him in the face but do you see like I could I told him in the face like I got I got frustrated with it with that battle not near not near as badly as Ryan did thankfully because like um right in the beginning I was running around the table looking for uh looking for Sebastian's gun because I was like oh yeah I just pulled out a gun yeah I need to find the gun then I found the knife and I'm like well shit that's right because whenever somebody dies their gun goes with them exactly and so like I ended up like he ended up the first time killing me by tossing me around the room and I was trying to run away and everything and figure out what to do and then like the second time when I got in there like I was like crouching around the table because I was like well maybe I can trick the AI into him like walking the wrong way and I can stab him in the back and uh so he tried to do his thing and tried to pull me like through the table which didn't work and so what I ended up doing is like I would be circling the table and he would he would be circling in the opposite way and try to use his force power on me and I could be right under the corner of the table right next to him so as soon as he was done with his force power I could stand up and I could stab him and like the first time I tried to stab him in the face and it went right into his head and nothing happened yes he didn't react there was no there was no blood there was no nothing I'm like I can't fucking stab him this was part of the the problem with this battle and why it took so many times is that it seems like the range on the fucking knife is whatever it wants to be you know he can he can get hit by the knife sometimes and then the next time you go up and you're right in his grill and like ah ah ah it's like my knife was placid on this place and nothing and I'm like oh great and I know you know like I had the timing just down because I had done it so many times you know when you restart a game a million times your it's muscle memory at that point so it's like okay restart skip the cutscene holding forward so that I can run and straight at him grab the knife and go buy him and if I don't get there right exactly at the right time then I like if you know because you you walk up to something and hit the use button and maybe 80 percent of the time you're aiming at the exact right spot you need to be able to have to bolt any fucking doors at this part exactly yeah I run and get the knife and if I hit had to hit a three times before he grabbed it I'm like oh well no I'm like okay well now he hits me twice and sure enough every time even though I'd grab it miss miss grab and I'm running back the other way snap snap snap and I see the blood come up on my screen because I knew like okay well that's the timing on getting they could not have picked a more maddening ability to give like the major bosses with wind like the the whole slowing you down like holding you in place like basically yeah so there's nothing you can do that's so I'd like I'll save it a little bit but I had a really frustrating experience with the other wind boss that were coming with the face one thing that was like it was super satisfying though when you finally get out of there and you go down the hallway and it first like and you get the gun so like at first you know I tried to go left because I thought I was still sneaking around all these guys I thought okay well maybe I need to find out a way to sneak behind them and stab them in the back that is what I tried to do right because there's no indication that I needed to go right instead of left and so I end up going right I go down I finally get the rifle I'm like oh shit it's on now because I was still had full ammo from before yep and so I just walked up and I fucking killed everything everything that I came across for the rest of the game I never snuck around I was like you all die and I think you're supposed to feel like a good like that is it doesn't tell you to go right and it really should right and that's like just another area where the game design doesn't hold up in this section but it does feel good to finally be able to shoot everyone yeah Robert Marsh is the only person in that entire game that I ever used the knife on I never used it on anyone else ever there you go oh yeah I never bought it my knife ever again I used it in the house to do some well you don't have you don't have it into except after that one yeah you only get it twice basically yeah but yeah so you rifle a bunch of bitches yeah rifle a bunch of fools then it's like the you know go to the laboratory because you have a key now you'll be a laboratory you get some bug spray you make your way back through the prison right well you can either go back through the prison because you pretty much have access to the front of it and you'll know that area so you can either go back through the prison and come up the other side or you can run all the way out to the main cave go through the front door of the laboratory which the back door leads out to the top of the prison as well so it's all kind of connected yeah I went through the I went I ended up going through the prison after after I killed Marsh or whatever and it was fun killing those fuckers in the prison I was fun actually I was like oh oh that's right I'm on higher ground rifle shot and honestly I didn't know what to do with the like that that little the little mail slot the food slot that opened I didn't know what to do I just had been picking up everything and I opened it up and then I was like oh okay well maybe it's a maybe this slop of food or whatever and like the thing on the other side like I closed it and it would even go and go oh he was hungry I guess did you ever open the door before you killed I did no I didn't apparently that causes like massive massive sanity failure so if you do it when you're scared he will kill himself the funny thing was I did it and the door opened and nothing appeared and uh and then the door never closed so but I still but I couldn't enter the room there was like an invisible wall and so I couldn't enter the room until after I had fed him and poisoned him weird that's and so then he and then after I fed him and poisoned him I like shut the thing and went and ran back to the invisible doorway and then he went from there being nothing in the room to all of a sudden his body disappearing like whoop against this there really was nothing in the room because it was just a sound effect and uh a video that plays either when you go and open the door that's really funny you've uh you've pulled the fourth wall aside literally and seen behind it [laughter] but yeah that beast looked kind of cool he was like a little Cthulhu Cthulhu baby yeah well that was a mutant deep one right that's what those are well I think that was just like one of the fish people that had developed a special way yeah is all and so that and then that's how they determined that the blue plant would be potentially hazardous to Cthulhu himself was through test on that guy so this is where I didn't pick up the plant my first time I told Arthur you got to go back and he was like oh my god it's really it's really not all that big and there's like three guards per way but they respawn those fucking guards respawn do they yeah I didn't notice any respawn I didn't have any respawns until the uh the deep ones start start coming when the quakes happen and we're not yeah we're not quite there yeah we're not there yet so you you kill the the mutant deep one with the this tentacle face piece right yeah um and then you find you get the key to the laboratory no you had the laboratory key from Robert mario oh yeah so you should also at this point if you go on to the laboratory you have the picked up the poison the poison right the plant poison and the hammer was in the room with the with the with the beast that you just killed yeah so now you go back and get the gem so you can get the gem and you can point I okay so if you're smart you go to the lab first so if I hadn't had the fact I might have missed the plant killing part i did i missed it yeah i didn't know it was like kill this plant so i can climb up it yeah like because it doesn't look like a climbable surface yeah they never and they haven't had a part previously in the game where you can climb up plant yeah i totally i totally missed that i was like i have no idea what the fuck to do yep and i actually missed it again when it comes up later we'll get to that oh i know exactly what you're talking about that one that guy who is the only guy on the internet who has written a fact for this game i want to give him five dollars i know right i mean i'm serious like i threw the guy that wrote the fact for this game like email one of us seriously please we will hook you up because if not for you this game would have been awful i i may have broken a keyboard yeah across the equipment that the equipment that we saved but no i mean that guy seriously i the whole time i was playing and i'm like i'm so glad this one fucking guy did this yeah thank god okay once you have the gem you go back you kill the plants you climb up them to the weird alien we're skipping over the lab part though oh the lab part we're the guys talking to the guys oh yeah where you where you have to talk to the that's just the man and he tells he tells you how to get into the to the secret chamber and then you can i mean that's the only thing that there's worth pointing out there's that you either kill him or you don't right i killed him killing him causes a massive sanity loss no it doesn't if you shoot him from a far enough distance away because apparently of sanity failures but if you stab him effect if you stab him or shoot him close it causes a massive i shot him right in the face from about two feet away to i said i tried shooting him in the face i said i didn't want to use a bullet exactly i didn't want to waste a bullet on him i'm will day my shot went through my shot me and it went bullet went right through his head i shot him i shot him once through the head and it went right through him and then i shot i was like what that was weird and i shot him in the head again and then it went i got through it so it's funny what i was i was the asshole that shot him in this chest yeah like it's like i always i always think that too yeah how fucked up is that like somebody actually put him out of your misery shooting in the chest so it reminds me of a part in uh at least you didn't shoot him in the stomach in starship troopers that part where the the sergeant gets his legs eaten off yeah and he's like you know what to do Rico and he just shoots him in the chest i'm like oh you don't shoot someone in the chest and they say you know what to do you fucking headshot him like you just be like then you just be sitting like oh it wasn't it was not what i meant that's not what i meant it wasn't in Michael ironseid's contract i have his head splattered all over the sand that's what i was saying i'm just saying you guys i'm just saying you guys keep that you guys keep that you guys keep that in mind if i ever say you know what to do it means shoot me in the fucking face i would just to see if we have to play a game like call up with a little guy that might happen that's like like call through like next next setter's fighting but i like this game but i hated it at the same time i know like i told this ending i really it's a very antagonistic relationship which is it's something that i think you develop when you're playing a lot of adventure games you're like fuck this game that's true this game is amazing because i fucking figured out what to do i didn't even figure out what to do and i still like i have a soft spot in my heart for it just because god the the beginning is so good and they i mean it really does things that i it goes a direction that i wish more developers would go but it just needs like another two years of polish and they obviously cannot it's like watching the club footed kid like struggle his way across the marathon finish line i definitely want to go to like you know i'm glad you're the one singing the fucking thing this week i want to go to like a Bethesda event in in London next month and then i'll meet some guys like oh yeah it was on the team and i just like all of a sudden you guys are just kidding did you know anything you got arrested by Interpol you strangled someone i'm just like i have no recollection that was better that did not happen you become the rock obon and for for our listeners Anthony made a gesture of holding somebody onto the ground and choking them yes because those are only translated over radio yeah i just picture myself hitting his head against the ground until it was a bloody ball at least for the ending of the game okay so all right so you get the crystal you go through the crystal gate you come out of the other side and when did you find the fucking super weapon yeah a steampunk gravity gun and it's yeah it's the steampunk gravity gun in its own little chamber which is totally exactly all the other chambers pick up shit it's all but all of your guns you pick up at the same time too like i picked up the super weapon and at that same time i got all of my weapons are you sure you know no no all the rest of the guns are in the prison in the circular room with staircase so are they yeah you know i i was just i'm not noticed that you i totally didn't notice that i picked them up that all i needed was the rifle yeah that's all i need to pick up the super weapon so like what i what i thought this little piece of lore here is when i go through the gate and i pick up the super weapon i was thinking to myself oh they must like throw all of their stuff through this gate or whatever and it's how they keep things safe or hidden or something it's their trash it's their trash i just thought it was ridiculous guys do we even know where there's causes yeah it's there it's just the closet super gate okay this room looks exactly like the fucking awesome room in the very first house in the beginning of the game yes you know where the where the guy who may or may not be your father anyway oh no no you spoilering son of a bitch okay we're this all spoilery okay keep going oh i think it's okay no it's fine it's fine anyway so we're going i don't even know we're talking me either he hasn't okay he hasn't seen the long ending he hasn't seen the long ending oh i've seen the long ending oh then he wasn't paying attention oh yeah no okay anyway whatever i watch the long ending and i'll tell you why later is no i know the long ending okay so so anyway you turn you put the crystal in the hole you turn on the gate and where does it put you like fucking 30 feet away seriously yeah you go through the master super gate and you come out on the other side of the cave you've walked in this far you know it's like right by the waterfall room is where the it's just gonna stop on a later why did i have to take the fucking warp zone it's just up on a ledge you couldn't climb to it's cheaper than an elevator anyway super fractions awesome i like it in games where i get a weapon at the end that actually and it wasn't for the ammo so i never used anything else ever exactly and that's cool i'm aiming it can occasionally be kind of a pain in the ass i actually had uh some iron sights on that it does shake like crazy it reminded me a lot of the uh of the supergun from kill zone two actually huh because that is also in electricity yeah basically oh yeah like an unlimited ammo and it was also it was a very similar feeling that i got it's funny because that guns optional too like most people i don't even think everyone will pick it up when they play through those people are missing because they don't realize i think that it has like i didn't realize that infinite ammo anyway anyways true so so yeah so now at this point you've got the supergun which is sweet and you're supposed to uh electrocute some starfish uh that in the water yeah how did you figure this out now uh i had a fact anyway next to the entire time this was playing so it told me to go shoot the starfish in the water and as i went through that part i was like if i hadn't had this fact like and i was trying to play this on 360 backwards compatibility none of this would have made sense when you're fortunate enough to be using electricity course into the air that it actually it actually it actually when i shot it in that room while i was standing in the water i was about to ask oh awesome i didn't even tell where the water was but i did the same thing because i walked up to i walked up to the path and i'm like well maybe i'm supposed to burn away all these starfish or something like that and i didn't even think i'm standing in water and this is a sense that if it's any consolation not even thought about it is the water thing you might have figured it out eventually just as maybe i should try shooting them right with this which is what happened to me and it nearly killed me yeah i just don't know if i would have thought about killing the starfish with the electricity again like as soon as i got it and saw that it did electricity as like this fucking starfish or toast he did yeah no i had the fact i can't say there are no what ifs there you know i don't know what would have happened i think you might know yourself well enough to think i can tell you that i'm the type of gamer that if i that i would have pulled the guide out like whatever five hours before this happened because i got frustrated some other part where there wasn't water so you know i won't lie i had the guide i knew exactly what i was supposed to do at this part and i still electrocuted myself when i was shooting exactly i thought i was gonna die and that would have sucked anyway i was on my way to death like i could see the the screen getting darker and darker but i healed myself yeah so is this when you get to the big floating boss thing yes it's just that you go in you go into the giant tunnel and i mean i think god there's a save point right before that yeah this is after after after like fucking traipsing around doing like the worst first person platforming this side of the first half-life game so fighting these bosses too like i died a bunch of times before i finally like these bosses this is where i got super frustrated like i didn't have near to start a times fill because i died like a few times i was 10 and then i just i was like fuck this game i was really and then i just found a place and then i just found a place where i could turtle up they're they're floating win monster floating floating poop penis cancer monsters the guide tells you what do you say what the guide tells you to like huddled down and but next to these two i had that guide open and was was in that spot i didn't do that i just found my own spot what fucked me up is i only thought there was one at first i thought that like because i saw one of them fucking teleport away i was like man this thing is a wily son of a bitch i only thought there was one i just found one where there was a spot where he would literally come up right next to me right and that one was fine because i would shoot that one but i had a wall blocking me from the other one you probably ended up in pretty much the right spot that this guide tells you to go the the one problem i had to is that the first couple of times that i did it i didn't realize i didn't realize yet that you could charge up your gun right i didn't realize that only fully charged shots heard it apparently yeah i was shooting it but not charged once yeah but you're not charged shots or you're only partially charged shots can stop it from blasting wind down from blasting but it wasn't hurting it so ultimately when i was doing that i didn't think the gun could actually hurt it at all right i thought i was just supposed to get passed so that led to me dying yeah over and over again being like all right fuck it i just guess i got to stun him and buck for it and even even as the guy who played with the guy that i still died on this probably five times while trying to kill them because again fucking wind as their ability like the ability to knock you off or keep you from listening to a wall and it's like little things like oh i'm getting frustrated because this is my third time doing this and i miss a fucking jump and then my legs broke yeah i can't walk i break both of my legs exactly it's like you try to heal yourself and you get blown off in the time when you're healing yourself and then and then two of the time two of the times that i beat it i then would climb up to the top and i i didn't realize exactly where i was supposed to go because again i did didn't realize oh they're right here to climb right and then i would like fall down or make some stupid jump you know some small mistake and then have to do this all over again the guy the guide actually tells you that there's a boulder like you go up this first little path on your way up to the top where you climb the vines and there's a boulder there that that guy who wrote the guide stood next to twice and it like sucked him off the edge because of some glitch so it's like not a vision glitch or something wow so i was like i'm not going next to that boulder i actually had i actually had my own my own glitch on this problem on this part and it was like where i after i had killed both the guys and this happened to me three times so like not only did i die several times trying to kill the two bosses mini bosses whatever but like two or three more times as i'm like jumping up the path to get up to the vines there's this one ledge where it's like it's about like knee high and like i'm trying to jump up it and my jump button isn't working my space bar i'm hitting space bar that same thing happened to me and so i got stuck in crouch and it wouldn't work so now i'm just stuck i can't move i can't crouch i can't do anything right just the other mashing i had to reload yeah i had i had to reload too like i couldn't get it to work and so like fine and this game and there was one time where i was like i was jumping up the ledge and then like i came back off the ledge or like i was trying to jump on it and i couldn't quite get over it and then my jump button started working so i was like oh well maybe i can get a running start at it so i turn around to go back and then i tried to get a running start at it and my leg is broken and i'm like how the fuck did i break my leg i didn't go anywhere bones like a bird yep and like so yeah i ran into i ran into those i ran into bugs like that all throughout this whole ending part of the game and it fucking ruined it for me so you climb up the uh vines finally get up to the vines and there's a save point thank god yeah this is this where you come to the temple yeah this is where you come to hydro temple there hydro so at this point you know there's there's gonna start being more and more i think we kind of skipped over it but there'll be more and more quakes where our deep ones come out where deep ones come out and but at this point you have the god gun so you know you have the deep the deep one assassinated them and kills any of the ones behind them too yep so it makes it it's fun i you know and i like that there's a warning before they attack you in the in the quaking and the shaking and then you know as long as like a side note man this really made me want like a fucking steampunk shooter game looking at that gun i love the way that that gun looked it wasn't the infinity logo on the side yeah the the fucking like angular infinity logo yeah it was pretty cool and i and i'd like the uh i actually liked the gong puzzle where it was like you had to charge up your energy gun all the way and then like ring the gong so loudly that was the i only knew that because of the fact i like the gong part of the gong puzzle and like taking over the fish okay so it's okay so you you go up and you see mother hydro and you try to use she's in a bubble she's in a bubble and you shoot the water and it won't go through like it you expect it would you hit a switch and it says this controls the flow of water it doesn't fucking show you where any of the other switches are you kneel it tells you but you can tell this you assume that there you are it does it does it does if you go up to the pipes that lead down there yeah and like you can use those and he'll say and he'll say like i need to get the pipe but for me the view was just so obscure that it was difficult to see that there was like there would be another switch behind this and the other thing is that of course you know you keep seeing these visions from hydro's perspective of you apparently kneeling in the in the pond and you're supposed to realize that this is going to be the way forward someone in the comments said this is some serious castlevania two shit right here that is exactly exactly it's like what the fuck it's like oh i have to have the red jam equipped and kneel in front of this thing i have to have a little crystal and hold fucking down for seven seconds exactly what fucking nine-year-old would do that i can't it took me because i have the fucking nintendo power that told me how to do it i'm the same exact gamer as i was when i was six years old i was stuck on that i was stuck on that fucking part for a year well here's the problem that i had this is where i came to my game ending bug where i stopped playing and didn't get to see the ending in in the game and i'll let greg m from our comments explain he says after killing the magic users and hitting the lever on the central statue i hit the gong with a fully charged energy shot and stood in the water in front of hydra taking control of the fishman uh i jumped up to one of the out of reach statues and tried hitting the lever nothing happened the lever did not move i tried the rest of the levers to know about avail eventually i jumped out and found another fishman that had spawned and was following me around the room so i tried killing it with my possessed fishman the game kicked me back out to jack i proceeded to kill the fishman basically he goes on to the levers aren't the levers if you don't have to attack them were you using it yeah i can't use it no he tried attacking and so did i okay for me i actually got one of them to work with the fishman but then after that the other three would not i actually got the uh the first time the first time it happened to me when i finally figured out what i needed to do to possess a fishman for longer than two seconds uh i jumped up there and i was slapping the the switch and it like it wouldn't fucking go and i was like well what the hell is going on and then like i was stuck in the possessed fishman and like i went around i was killing the other fishman i ran like all over the stage and stuff like that july everywhere really like i tried to i tried to hit i tried to hit fucking jack you know just to see what would happen and like i was stuck as the fishman and couldn't flip any of the switches and i had to quit and reload wow wow wow so i did like that when you get up to the gong and you let forward a full power blast the way that it lets you know you're deaf is how you would be deaf which is like a ringing ring yeah that was awesome but yeah it's just that part was frustrating and more frustrating the fact that you have to do it four times because each time you only have enough time possessing the fishman to hit one switch yep so then you have to go back and redefen and then there's the possibility if you're if you're not careful where you're looking and you've had sanity issues in the past and the rest of the game you can go insane from the glory of mother hydra's nipples and not only that when the game's working right and you don't get to spend all day as a as a fishman like it like what happened to you matt right you know the fish the deep ones are constantly responding and knocking you out of your fucking like state and coming out to the gong room and trying to kill you i think i killed about 17,000 deep ones yeah i killed like so many deep ones and i hadn't had an infinite ammo gun right we've been game over yeah the deep ones never spawned for me while i was while i was had while i was in possession of one of them hmm so what happens then when you finally hit all the switches okay i never got to see that so this is the fucking bombest part of the entire game well the first thing well the first thing is super sick well the first thing i think it's really fucking awesome i'm serious the first the first thing that happens of course is you like there's enough water in there and you can find an electrocute mother hydra with them and if you're an idiot then you're standing and you're standing in front i had saved enough times at this point i was like you know what i'm gonna do this right i'm gonna get it done because once i beat mother hydra then everything can be fucking swimming and i'm gonna beat this game and it's gonna be over and you were wrong i was wrong i was so fucking wrong okay so you go up to the fucking there's a pedestal right in front of mother hydra that has a thing on it and a save spot right beneath it no no no so we didn't describe what happens which is that you firefully charged electricity blast into the water in the pool that you just filled up after all this fucking rub Goldberg bullshit and she does the greatest dance in the history of awkward monster dances like some combination of like the running man in the robot and and then she falls forward out of her out of her shield and she dies yes and so and then you can pick up the the brooch and under necklace or amulet whatever the fuck you want to call it and uh underneath the amulet is a safe it's a safe space and i thought it was really cool i thought he would think hydro would be like there's some fucking graffiti on my fucking state sorry why can't anyone come near my pedestal all right so this is what i do i got my amulet i got my book a day gone everything's good i walk up to the door the front door is locked and you read with the book a day gone and it says if i had an amulet man i could probably open this door and so you use the amulet there he says the secret words clattoo vera to nick two or whatever before fucking opens you walk outside the door and you're like oh i've been here before this is where i grabbed that rifle i know exactly where i am and then and then you see right and then there's a cut scene a little movie you walk up to the next room and through the water you see oh shit it's the little submarine that could the little submarine that could is now blasting my ass and the entire place is coming down great the escape sequence i've done this super metroid i've done this in metroid prime and i can escape from anywhere when it's falling apart no problem oh but wait i can't run no the slowest speed humanly when you get hit by a rock in your leg it's fucking broken yeah exactly okay so that didn't happen to me my first time through i got hit by one rock but it was no problem it didn't really hurt that much and i just ran and ran and ran and i'm like man i hope i can figure out where to go and i did i ended up going the right way the first time and i was like awesome this is awesome i remember that gate now i remember the exit i'm glad these these bars that were closed through the entire part of the game as soon as you get captured they're open now and i can get back through back out the way that i can but that's awesome because i remember that there's that secret gate there i saw when i came up i'd get there the world's falling apart i pull out my amulet clattoo verrata smash a boulder falls on my head game over while he's reading the incantation in and i'm like okay well i i say he's stellar game design right can we give a copy of co-occathule to ryan yeah i need another one so so i'm like well that sucks i must not have gone quite fast enough i bet if i didn't get hit by that boulder everything will be cool or if i cut corners or something right all right and so i started jumping you know in the room where the where the shit starts going down things start falling there's a couple columns that are down in the ground i was like i can jump over these i have a jump button that'll make me go faster so that's what i do next time through jumping over the columns totally we even through shit never getting hit by any boulders i've cut in every corner as tight as possible and i get there clattoo verrata smash by boulder it's literally the exact same spot and i'm like oh you have got to be shitting me so i do it again and this time i'm like okay well maybe it's a sanity failure because when it happens it's just like smash your dead game over and i have no idea what causes it so this time i'm like i'm gonna do it while staring at the floor so that my sanity will be recharge while i'm doing it i literally do the run flawlessly while staring at the floor and get there clattoo verrata smash i'm just imagining the benne hill music playing i run out into the living room and i say it mats out there and i'm like matt you know the part where you get the amulet and you say the fucking words and then the doors open then you go out to the next part and you say the fucking game is over and i can live happy again you know you were able to like get through that right in and and he's like yeah you know i got smashed once but i made it through second time i was like i keep dying at the exact same spot i think this is only on nictos i think this is the problem exactly i actually got smacked i actually got smashed a couple times and it was right right at the end right right as i was running up to read the amulet i hadn't actually got to that i say i guess right right and i got crushed a couple times and like i thought i was just running into a trap and so there was a couple times where like i ran through the where the gated doors used to be and i stopped and i was like okay where's the trap and so i was trying to jump my way through and i would get smashed yeah and so i was like all right this must be a time thing and i and i made it all the way to the end and then my amulet did work yeah i just told me if you look up at the roof you can see rocks that are like made to fall yeah right so i was thinking that okay on my last try before i decided to stop and just look at the youtube video i said you know what it's very possible that there are rocks above this like chamber thing this little thing that i put my amulet over and read my words and then it turns on the gate and it's possible that if i stopped and didn't run so speedily to this spot i can look up and see that there are rocks above me let the rocks fall and then do the i ran a little bit more like someone from kuber instead of kenya i guess it's done i say i thought to myself but i said you know what i'm not going to do it i'm not going to go back and play it this way because that is the like epitome of trial and error game design and fuck that like i did it three or four times and yeah it's possible there rocks over my head this is the very end of the game let me out of the final gate and so i thought about the fact that there could be rocks above my head and i was like you know what no you i'm totally going to make it like and i'm going to fucking watch the full version of the ending for free because i deserve it because i played we need to have like the rising triumph orchestral music in the background is ryan is taking a stand right now so so yeah our comments had the same problem chase pieces i just did the same thing yeah he says i'm apparently at the ending part and i think i've gotten to the bug where you cannot finish the game basically the cave is coming down no matter how fast or how slow or even if i wait a few seconds before uh before exiting a certain part of the cave i'm killed by falling rubble very annoying um Anthony stop lighting your fucking foot on fire yeah seriously you're not okay you have this problem too how many people here so now we are not joking he is holding a lighter to a sock because he is an idiot it is a magic trick guys where if you have a lot of lint on your sock touch it to it and like the flame will run across your foot and take care of all the lint but you tapped in kerosene earlier please stop that all right you can sit off the fucking fire smoke detector again so matt matt and arthur you guys actually finished it yeah so i hugged to the left of that path and the rocks came down and they did not kill me what were the endings like for you because you didn't get the perfect idea i saw the worst ending arthur got ending three yeah so what happens in this ending um you flash to where you figure out or you find out that the times were uh what was the like the four years you lost your memory well but all of the cutscenes basically where it flashed into weird alien shit or you remembering that the six years that you spent insane without any memory were actually time spent with the yiddies and the only reason we figured this out okay so you didn't figure that out this was written in the fact right to this the guy explained it in the flesh well yeah that he did but i didn't mean the fact for the ending it was also i mean it was relatively self self explanatory yeah but so the time that you can't remember is time that you spent with the yiddies um learning their ways while yiddie and inhabited your body and did a bunch of random shit like fuck some chicks or something out of now well they uh like i had to read the fact to figure out like why the yithians were uh possessing you and or like why they swapped minds with you yeah it turns out the yithians are a lot like amish people or like to find out what it's like you know to really choose the yithian rumsberga it's the yiddian rumsberga yeah that is what you go and experience being human but it was like it was like they're like 50 million years old or something like that and then a long dead race when they can project their mind into the future yeah something like that so basically you spent time with them all they did stuff on earth to to try to deal with the uh the polyps which i guess is what we're calling the cocoon and the cocoon and cancer monsters that's what they were called in the back yeah well no they say the polypus ones they're like polypus ones yeah that's what they call them um so the ending i got was but we're running out of time we have to get you out of here blah blah blah and that's when like you come to or something and you hang yourself and yeah you hang you kill yourself and yourself yeah that's the same ending i got which is it actually just goes back to the beginning of the game the beginning of the game is actually the so-called perfect ending okay so the agenda is longer it's longer it has a Luke Skywalker moment exactly oh yeah yeah that's right so basically you figure out that your father was also occupied by a yithian and it was at the moment where he was boning your mom yeah um so he says that like others uh so he's like are you classy of you to put it that way or so like so like jack says are you saying that you're my father and he's like did he say it like counter-reaves yeah he did okay and then he said and he says uh no you idiot and the yeah the guy says no i was like possessing his mind but he also says so you're not it but you're it also means that you're not entirely human yeah it's like oh well great and your father's way of dealing with suicide right so which is that and in the the so-called perfect ending you commit suicide anyway yeah there's no way for for him to live see it's weird yeah and i actually thought that the way the story was going to end was like the way the book did which is where you found out that the reason you were somehow all the coincidences came back to you getting involved in smith is that you actually were were part of one of like the oaths of day gone because even the movie day gone which we never ended up watching which follows the plot of the game and stuff in a lot of ways ends with a guy finding out that he actually is a fish person and he has gills under skin and stuff and he joins them swims off frolicking with sweet boobies so like i assumed that that's what this was going to jack was just going to find out he belonged belonged to the fishies mike says in our comments here's a fun time while watching the ending cinematic windows minimize my game to notify me about restarting to install updates this crashed my game i bet you this was the same day that it restarted my fucking pc for windows updates and years to it's trying to restart this one right now balls yay and then did you guys get to watch um i sent out a link to this youtube video yes of uh the sequel that the potential sequel to this game that headfirst was working on before they shut down with the the polikatulu destinies end the polikas things around the fire with like where's their person shooting well it was interesting i mean it looked in concept i mean this is just like a cinematic so it was hard to say what they're actually doing with the game but in concept it looked a little bit more like resident evil four like they were trying to kind of build their game around that style of shooting it was third person over the shoulder with a partner but what's what seems so weird to me is like i i mean i'm not i'm not a fan of of the series of lovecraft of lovecraft or any of the works but it seems like what the beauty of it is is about uh what you don't see rather than what you see and so when you start the game with a campfire scene with a bunch of like evil polyp monsters standing around it and the the majority of the trailer has spent like shooting them and running away from them and stabbing them with sticks it definitely seems like it's missing the fucking point they definitely implied that the sanity effects would be there too though because the guy like looks like he's freaking out when he sees them and he almost it looks for a second like he's gonna shoot his partner so right it's definitely like there was an implication that you would have a partner in the game and also though that there would be like sanity effects maybe you can harm your partner i always i always thought the what a really bizarre contrast for me was when i would be really freaked out and the sanity effects are in full effect and jack's all like i have to get away oh they're after me you can see me coming and all that kind of stuff and yet you can go up and use an item and and there's nothing of interest there's nothing of interest it was like it's a really jarring contrast did we figure out what morphine does in the game because i definitely took it when my sanity looked like it was a Patrick's plan which got Arthur a ranking of the drug addict at the end of the game yeah just using it once no i used it a lot okay i used it i used it when i was like injured and didn't have there were a couple hills and i didn't have healing stuff so i would just use that and it seemed like he would keep going for a while i used it one time during the day but it messed up his vision but yeah nothing i mean it just i was i used it once and it seemed to make it so i didn't die and it made it really hazy for a while but i was able to get through it well we'll include a link to the uh the youtube video of the sequel and the show notes if people want to check that out cool and also i think it's gonna give me more work yeah i'm gonna give you more hold on i also want to include a neck nick d in our comments says uh if the dark atmosphere called Cthulhu left you feeling a little depressed he wants us to cheer up also just the frustrating last segment so we're gonna have a link to the youtube video for fisherman the musical i was totally sure when i finished i was like this fucking game is finished finally now you get to play bully now you get to play bully that's right so like what it what did what did you guys think of the game overall i mean i know we touched we touched on this a little bit already yeah i mean it is really just it's annoying that the the last two sections for me were really frustrating for the most part and it's annoying that they were frustrating because that beginning section was so excellent i really loved the the private i stuff that's exactly what i want and just the the investigation and i feel like that really went away i mean i guess it came back a little in the mansion segment um a little bit but not as not as it wasn't done as well it was the adventure the old school adventure gameplay right exactly not the shooting yeah no that the game did not do shooting well it did not do platforming well it did not do action well and near the end so much of it was shooting and platforming i think the thing it does do well and maybe to it's not you know it had a lot of variety of stages you know what i mean and so at least it didn't feel like you were doing the same thing the whole time and i told him like when we when we were first playing it you said man i i would have guessed this game took place entirely in the in smith i totally thought that would have been going to be the case and so just the fact that there are so many settings and that you know sometimes they look kind of cool that was pretty nice but what i really want is just another or just a private i game yeah and unlike unlike indigo prophecy where you know i was really annoyed by at the end of the game when when all the kind of like sci-fi magic shenanigans show up this game they're in there from the it's totally consistent yeah something i feel like i mean it's obvious to me that the guys who made this game are really passionate about the the Lovecraft you know mythology yeah they they love this stuff and they wanted to show it off and show it was cool about it but i think they maybe they maybe wanted to show it off too much and they got to epic and they're planning and they were like you know well it's not just be creepy about it let's not just show a few monsters let's show a ton of fish monsters and let's let's show day gone and let's show hydra and it was well to be fair to take it that far i mean the environment that it came out in that that probably seemed like a totally reasonable choice like we're playing it now outside of any real retail ecosystem but i can see in the planning meeting so they would say look like all this intimate shit is great but that is not enough for this game in this environment especially not when the 360 is coming out soon like this is an xbox game competing a bunch of other shit we need more in it and i get that but it just it it the pacing just changes radically and the logic of the game changes radically at the end and it it doesn't hold together very i don't even think it's just the end i mean i think it's kind of the thing that's consistent all the way through is the inconsistency well is is jack's character essentially is the way that he moves and you know once you get the gun it's a little bit of a different story but i mean you kind of the you know there's the inventory system there's the health system and there's jacks inner monologue and that like keeps you going throughout the game you've got those sanity effects and i really like the the sanity effects throughout i just wish that you yeah it was a bit more of a straight up adventure game or i guess it's just i missed straight up adventure games and i and i don't think i like the idea that it's from first person but i i don't think that as soon as you put it in first person you have to put guns in it i think it's an effective proof of concept for a good first person like real-time adventure games sure but i also i want to say too like i don't know anyone who worked on this game but you know if anybody's listening who worked on this game or knows anyone who did i would love to talk to you on the podcast or even off the podcast like i just i'd love to talk to someone to work on the game and like hear more about the what the development was like i'm sure it was a total like crazy story i imagine there would be really interesting stories from that just because uh yeah i mean i'm glad i played it like i'm i'm really glad i played i remember wanting to play it yeah the funny thing is over its development yeah me too and the funny thing is is like i'm also glad that i played it and even with how totally fucking frustrating the last quarter of the game was i if somebody asked me if they should go play it i would probably tell them to do so and then you'd send them a link to the FAQ i would i would tell them play through the in Smith portion at least yeah um and i think there's a lot of really great stuff to see throughout the game and that's one of the things that kept me playing was there was almost always like another part where i would see something really cool a few minutes afterwards like it in that respect its pacing was good and that it kept giving payoffs for for stuff in the game and like the last stage if the if the game design was better the whole the whole setting and the creatures that you run into and finally running into uh you know marsh himself and everything like that the the ideas there were are really compelling when you think about the full arc of the story but the gameplay is so terrible it just has such scope you know like the fact that you start that this felt like a game at the beginning where you were gonna spend it all in this little like seaside village and by the end of the game you've gone there you've gone through a crazy factory you've gone on a boat for a long ass time and then you make it all the way into like the secret depth secret depths of the ocean i really didn't expect that i kind of wish they could have done this game in source instead of the engine that it was shoot dude everything like this game if it had been more like half-life one or half-life two but just even more like half-life one would have been say i don't want that like i i just feel like there were just too many things that they wanted to do that was outside of the scope of their engine and it it definitely showed the simon the sars earth 3d engine yes yeah not the iller souls engine i i'm not talking about the engine i just mean like for a game that is so heavily shooter focused the shooting should have been good yeah or they should have made it less shooter focused yeah but uh all right well yeah yep we will be back next week to talk about bully we're going to play through the fall section of the game the falls the the first season based yeah it's a season based it's split into fall winter spring and then there's sort of an endless summer section i don't know how much we'll play exactly or how we'll serve that up exactly but we'll play all the fall okay okay the first one word how do you get how can you get bully if you're not so bully is available like i said it's on amazon right now on sale which we'll have links to it's also on steam you can you can get it on you can play it on 360 playstation 2 we or pc and yeah it's on steam for the pc so hopefully you have lots of different people ps3 or ps2 otherwise you're bummed but other than that word all right
