Episode Title: Beyond the Trophy: Are We Obsessed with "Best" in Business and Life?

Hey there, Silver Streakers and Holistic Health Seekers! Grandpa Bill here, back with another episode of the BH Sales Kennel Kelp Holistic Healing Hour. Today, we're diving into a topic that's been ticklin' the back of my mind lately – this whole obsession with "best of" awards, trophies, and titles. Now, don't get me wrong, a little recognition can be a nice pat on the back. But what happens when the pursuit of these shiny things overshadows the real journey of growth and well-being, both for ourselves and the world around us?

The "Best Of" Trap

We see it everywhere – companies vying for "Best Workplace" awards, plants judged for "Perfect Bloom" at flower shows. Even in our personal lives, there's this pressure to achieve the "best" body, the "best" relationship, the "best" vacation. But have we stopped to ask if this relentless striving for the top is actually healthy or productive?

Holistic Harmony

Here's the thing, folks. Just like a garden thrives on diversity, not uniformity, human potential blossoms when we embrace our unique journeys. Chasing trophies might give a temporary ego boost, but it can also lead to burnout, anxiety, and even a disconnect from our true purpose.

The Cost of Absenteeism

Now, let's shift gears for a minute. All this talk of "best" makes me wonder – how much emphasis do we put on perfect attendance for maximum productivity? Studies show companies lose a significant chunk of change due to absenteeism. But is forcing people to be physically present always the answer? Perhaps a more holistic approach, focusing on employee well-being and a healthy work-life balance, could lead to a happier and more productive workforce in the long run.

Probing Questions

  1. Have you ever felt pressure to achieve the "best" in a particular area of your life? How did that pursuit affect you, positively or negatively?
  2. In your experience, what creates a truly healthy and thriving work environment – a focus on awards and recognition, or a more holistic approach that prioritizes employee well-being?

everyone welcome back to another edition of the B.H. sales chemical holistic killing are with your host the moderator me grab a bell welcome one and all some of you by our invitation were applicable my two church my computer and Paul each and every day for a really long time we continue to grow exponentially with you guys in gals help by continuing to pay for it I do two audios each and every day now in my sixth year of doing so even though I fall under the proverbial radar we've done shows on that I am blessed that I have worldwide exposure and I'm on pretty much any platform that you would listen and or view any podcast show which is a subject we're going to talk about today via my youtube channel and bill hold 8792 give us thumbs up like a sure us and subscribe way feel comfortable in doing so so here at youtube swear to collect my thoughts as to what the subject matters going to be as I mitigate out to what are eventually my grades out to my workouts for jury optics aka silver streakers good for all kids from one to 92 about health and wellness predominantly geared to the percentile of my listening audience we fellow silver streakers trying to bridge that gap the gen zeros millennials gen x and we do pretty well in that category hoping to get a lot of help with that when my granddaughter air whom I'll also talk about again with an update as far as her pending internship here with me this summer what's left of it before she returns to school and I'll tell you a very interesting story and update about her she's going to be on the show about it also today what I want to talk about is false gods at another show idolatry at another show and stay with me a little bit before I start showing you a couple of things I've talked about this for years first of all who cares but I did retire from corporate america in 1995 and I've talked lots about the reasons why when how because because I became a sole proprietor at that juncture for the better part 30 years and I always had supplemental income jobs to put back into my business which did journal profit when it's first year as small as it was because it was more about passion in supporting animals and humans and health and wealth in a career long gone far away now what I wanted to intimate and relay which I really do not like to do and I've never done trophies accolades awards rewards or whatever I have a few in my career and way back when when I don't know I thought I was in half weed or whatever who cares that's the whole point of this so occasionally I take mountain dust them off now listen it doesn't mean I'm not proud of everything I had to do to bust my butt to get those awards and rewards because nothing came easy to me so no poor me I just wasn't blessed with natural ability talent or whatever I had to work my bottle off it everything I ever did including academia and you know I made national law and society and all that crazy stuff when I was in college who cares my point and all that is all that shit's overrated pardon the Freudian slit but it is but it is now before I get started because we have a propensity some of us worldwide around the world of shutting down when someone's talking about a sentence be it in whatever arena you may want to choose it's so prevalent in any kind of media you say three words or whoever says it and when you find out the ultimate ending of the sentence while it was in nothing like it was presented when it was the first two words when they cut it off shut it off and paid it forward all of this I'm going to hold up an award that I won the year before I was awarded it in the renumeration and I'm going to get to why and how I did the renumeration for having perfect attendance the year before I actually retired from biotech lab here on a local level everything about it was awesome the people the company it was less than two miles from my house I walked at many times so it had nothing to do with stuff that's written in when you talk about subjects that oh he must have been a disgruntled employee oh whatever okay gonna hold up this award that I got back in 2021 this is a great piece of sculpture and it's pretty heavy and I did you know they had a little party and all that kind of stuff but it really from the heart I appreciate that embraced around this award and when I actually retired a year later from getting this award it actually says wait I'm holding my name at that time 15 years of service and commitment and that was back in 2021 and I did retire the following calendar year and have done thankfully so because I did it in my own volition society's child Genesee Ian so I'm going to flash back to a story about that company when it was under its prior management management and ownership he tried to say because the lion's share of my career there was under that administration in that ownership the ownership that bought it was just fine and all that I'm going to get to a couple of stories be a woman so many years that I've been doing this in writing so many blogs way back when when I had my I wrote a blog every single day and pretty much did shows every single day and then pretty much did everything that's entailed and being a sole proprietor for all of you guys and gals whatever your commodities shops where's whatever certainly came away to and kudos to you guys and gals okay one of my blog articles many years ago is I post the question in general what does absenteeism cost any company corporation be it a small mom and pop all the way up to the big players with thousands of employees obviously with thousands of employees across a lot more so I actually posed the question what what does it cost the company in absenteeism alone when you start to think about temporary help and the reasons that everybody's out close lose dynamics of the building moldy insulation all kinds of things people snibbling coughing whatever airborne through all kinds of different errors of time and sicknesses so lo and behold in my memory so fractionated and I'm working on remembering stuff and all that kind of stuff I cannot remember the exact year I'm going to say 2018 2017 18 that previous management team of that company that I got awarded that trophy for instance and I got remunerated they threw a great party and all that this is no way shape or form about them it's about the system okay the former management team for that company when it came time for the yearly review I went right back to the old article that I used that I wrote years and years ago I posted as a question at the time the ownership team husband and wife the husband was a retired banker high-up he numbers guy so I just simply said in our discussion you know what did absenteeism cost the company last year the company that I worked for and I really wasn't kind of expecting his response he goes you know Bell I can't answer that for you but I'm gonna get you an answer and believe me would all do respect it was by choice was a semi retirement job that's kind of the low man on the totem pole I served a very integral part of the operation but I mean I wasn't in management and or any of that kind of stuff so I was you know worker saying what did you know what did that cost so long story short long story short he came back to me he ran all these numbers about 10 basis fees and how much he did cost them and he had a figure and it was semi-impressive when you know again going back to it and not necessarily that this happened there but it did for a number of reasons because of all kinds of funky stuff in the biotech lab going up into the installation and oh my god there's stories that tree trunks got stuck in the outside sewer system and we have multiple floods and it was interesting so he got back to me with all these numbers of what it cost and he had it all broken down with you know temp agencies and having to go that route when like in a small office environment overall had come in place with the exception of yours truly and I'm still not impervious I'm still not a god just stay with me everybody in those 16 years them staff number that back in 2008 2010 calls flues sniveling whatever and when we got to it that's an essential employee I worked through it and it's not funny one of their field offices had a couple of fatalities with it so of course that caused the chaotic stuff that went along with it and all of that so I'll leave you with this as well by the way I got a pretty good significant piece of change in that negotiation also because of bringing that to their attention how much money did I save them by being there every single day for 16 years again not about me it was I was just in those sneakers in that example so let's end it with this no spursions on them it's about how we were led to believe all kinds of crazy stuff okay I had a false positive for it and it was in its infancy when the swabs were a foot long by design here's what I'll try to create for a visual outside of the company at that time when it got to the point that they had to meet you outside and run the meters on your head the temperature meters that I called the captain spot of very close Star Trek ray guns because that's what they were okay they pointed it out my head you know you had to do that everybody did to make sure you passed that reading test we weren't allowed to come in the building understanding ambiance of this okay you had to be there I got out of my black Subaru paint on a 98 degree day which is warm for here in Maine and who knows moving forward another subject it may be one of our cooler days if things don't change so I get out of my car out of the black Subaru and I literally still wasn't I mean I was breaking a splat because of the heat it gets better they had recently just paved the target honest to god they had recently just paved the chart in the parking lot that had really nothing to do staying with me they took three readings and I mean they went they buried from whatever the mason dixon line for the temperature I don't even remember okay the first one was over by two decibels supposedly this was in like a less than five minute multiple reading because I said to them that's just wrong it's just wrong it's not my temperature it's just wrong they clicked it out my head again in like less than five minutes at that setting it went from three different variables from low to high one of them was high enough that I simply said to them let's take a deep calming breath if I was that high of the temperature please call a priest and I'm not the best at catholics but get somebody over here immediately and give me some the last rites and then I simply tried to impart upon them very very brilliant people there was all scientists in there common sense went out the window in those days remember so lo and behold I had to go to an independent lab and it gets better the first thing they said to me was you're all set number one I didn't have coded and they said all we've heard all day long in the crew that they had to go there from other facilities that was their function to say yeah you do know you don't or you've been from work or you're okay the clinician that gave me the tests said that's all we've encountered all day and all week long as false positives from the ray gun so on the backside of that story okay because it was an in-house law even though I passed the test I had to take a couple days sabbatical or whatever okay it wasn't the money I could kill last it was the principal okay I never got paid for those two days okay understand the oxymoron in that okay the gun was faulty all those other things I got a document and improved that I didn't have it which was supposed to be the clearance that you could come back but there was something in-house thing that was automatic because it was read that way that you had to you know get dismissed I think it was two or three days that's fine so this is the pay part it's the principal so I did just pose the question at the next pay cycle well if I never had it which I never had it ever ever ever ever had it and we did all this stuff triple masks remember that so I just simply asked that question okay it was proven that the guns were faulty and when we all calmed down and used common sense how could it vary that quickly in five minutes going to what would be proverbial at death level I think it was 107 or some crazy stuff like that so I just simply said I'm not arguing I'm not to be I'm just posting it as a question okay it was false positive that was proven I went to the lab thing to have it proven and I still got banned for an insurance policy and I understand it to my opening point they lost some employees so there was a panic of course and that was from one of their out west facilities and all that kind of stuff so I guess the common sense factor never registered and so I well no you got to stay all three days and I said well yes I know that I did but why wouldn't I get compensated for that and I'm not arguing fine fine you know but I would love clarification on that it was a false reading I got proven okay and it was an in-house policy that I got you know I had to take a vacation or whatever well that should have been would pay just the principal of it okay we're almost at 20 minutes that's the main mental and moment in life I'll spin upon out my audio shows false gods imagery tophies accolades recognition is great and way back in my sales career who cares duster I got sales money here and all that BS had a lot to do with why I left it all in 1995 it was all kind of predicated or not kind of crap so having always felt and fought for the small man me and James Dean not Jimmy Dean the sausage guy James Dean the rebel without a cause James Dean and rep bill I'll continue to be a rebel without a cause forever when it's the truth and why do they still fear the truth I query we'll talk about it at the shows by by from now may God bless peace everybody have a safe and productive day
