  • Dissociation is a concept that has been developed over time and which concerns a wide array of experiences, ranging from a mild emotional detachment from the immediate surroundings, to a more severe disconnection from physical and emotional experiences

    • Severe stress or trauma: Experiencing a traumatic event or prolonged stress can trigger depersonalization as a coping mechanism.
    • Mental health conditions: It can co-occur with anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.
    • Depersonalization-derealization disorder (DPDR): When depersonalization and feelings of detachment from surroundings (derealization) occur frequently and cause significant distress, it's classified as DPDR.
    • Substance abuse: Drug use, particularly hallucinogens, can sometimes induce depersonalization.
  • Treatment:
    There are effective treatments available for depersonalization, including:
    • Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can be very helpful in addressing distorted thoughts and coping mechanisms related to depersonalization.
    • Medication: In some cases, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications can be prescribed to manage co-occurring mental health conditions.
    • Relaxation techniques: Mindfulness meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can help manage stress and anxiety, which can worsen depersonalization symptoms.
