The Philadelphia Flyers closed out 2024 with a decisive win over the San Jose Sharks and Macklin Celebrini.

John Tortorella rolled 4 lines against the lowly Sharks, and Philly stymied San Jose for most of the night, limiting their offensive opportunities and taking advantage of a healthy shot differential.

Bill, Charlie & Kelly ring in the new year breaking down the Orange & Black‘s victory and discussing the Calder Trophy favorites.

We have a shutout folks, a shutout to end 2024, a combined effort from the starter, Sam Harrison, and those final 20 minutes finished off by Alexi Kolosov and Kelly. I put shutout in the outline like four minutes into the third. Wow, and it paid off, but. Yes, I love the courage William. Yes, we got our victory championship belt. It's the power of the belt. The belt saw us through. Yeah, we have our mummers hat. I have to take it. You're amazing. You look incredible. I have to have one headphone not on my ear so I can hear myself and I don't know if I was screaming or not there. I assume I was, but here we are, fam, just about an hour and 20 minutes until we ring in 2025. The Flyers did their part going out to San Jose and defeating what was obviously an inferior team. They come in with one win in their previous 11 games. They blew that third period lead to the Sharks last time. So you know that was a little bit on their mind and I think you saw them make a point, especially in the first half of the first period to kind of keep the pedal to the metal, so to speak. What did you guys think of the game tonight? Yeah, I just thought this was one of those games where it's easier to count the guys on the team who you didn't think played well because everybody on the team pretty much had a good game. It was just different levels of good. Some guys were great. Some guys were really good, but I don't really think anybody was that. It's a bummer. You know, obviously the one negative of this game is Sam Harrison's status, especially because it seems like he's just starting to rediscover his his A game. Their first two periods. Yeah, I didn't get a ton of work, but he made some nice saves and just seems like he was settling in. Hopefully that was more precautionary than anything else, but we obviously don't know yet. Cool that they got the combined shutout. That said, as a baseball fan, I can tell you, I hate like combine no hitters. To me, they're not real no hitters unless it's one guy who's pitched the entire no hitter. It doesn't feel like a real shutout when two guys share the shutout, but great team defense, good goal tending by both guys. So again, part of nitpick this one. That's like with the combined and I want to get to you, Kelly. The idea of the combined to me kind of just demonstrates how much it is just more than that one guy. Like yeah, sometimes you have a 50 save shutout and it's like they would have got killed if not for the goalie, but most of the time it's like, yeah, you held them to 24 shots and none of them were all that high quality. So you didn't allow any goals. So I think it really, especially considering how bad the fliers goal tending has been. You go, that was just a complete team dominant effort. All right, Henkel, you. Yeah, that's pretty much what I was going to say. That was just one of those nice satisfying start to finish wins, like never in doubt. Just a nice one out there and won a hot game. You love to see it. Didn't have to take it to overtime. Didn't have to feel stressed at the end. Just went out there and won. You love to see it. I'll tell you what I really liked about this game. We talked pregame we see, okay, it's couturier and farabi with Hathaway. Like, paling is up on what would be considered like the top line with connect me and tip it. How are they really going to make all of this work? Like, are we going to see Sean Couturier and Joel Faraby play like the eight minutes we usually get of Garnet Hathaway? I really liked the even distribution of ice time in this one. Now, through two periods, Hathaway had the fewest minutes at 849 and TK at 1121 was the only player over 1030. So pretty much even entirely across the board. Now, you know, with a lead in the third, it's going to be a little different. But we still see TK leads the way with 1731. Then you see Faraby's right there, something in the 17s. And then Hathaway and Forster at the end with 1236 and 1304 for Forster. So like, everyone except one guy played over 13 minutes among the forwards. I really appreciate that. We saw this team, individual players, like, absolutely Travis Sandheim got worn down last year by the massive workload put on their shoulders. And it's not, yeah, you're like one of the only good defenseman. So you have to play a lot in nights like tonight. I appreciate the coach realizing like my style of play, the way I have these dudes play every night kills like they it is it is an exhausting way to play. And after the collapse last year, maybe we need to even this out when we can. And they did that tonight. And I really like that from the coach. Yeah, I don't know how much I feel like Bill, I think you believe in the exhaustion factor as playing a role in their late season fall off last season more than I do. I don't totally buy it to me. It was more just specific to one position that then dragged everything else down. And then the team started losing its mind because they couldn't trust their goalies. Like that's more my view. But I don't think it's a bad thing to distribute the ice ice, especially when you're on a road trip. You know, it's not like they're playing a crazy busy schedule on this road trip. But it takes a lot of how do you trap? It does. You're not your own bed. You're bouncing around from city to city. You're on planes. Yeah, you're the midpoint of what technically is 16 road trip. Really, it's a five game road trips. I don't think it's fair to count with it's for games part of this road trip. There's an entire holiday breaking between that game and the start of this one. But it's a five game road trip out west. Time difference. It's tough on guys. If you can find a way not to overload anyone in a game, it's a good thing to do. And they did a great job in this one of the tripping the ice time. Well, I'll agree with you on that. Also, like we don't have a clear cut top. Like it's not like there's like lines that are like so much better than the other lines. Like arguably the cat's line has been the top line over the past few games. So like it kind of makes sense when you don't have a line that's going to go out there and be a sure thing for you. Like why not distribute the ice time and let everybody get a shot? In watching the way it unfolded tonight and they're using, they're basically rolling four lines for a lot of this game. I was wondering, like Kelly just said, you don't have a top line. Like Ryan Pailing is your one seat tonight. Katorie plays a ton of ice time. Like, but it was, you don't have a one seat. You don't have a top line. Your top six, top nine, what really is the difference between the third line? Like, you know, the Forster line is that good. You roll with them. If this is kind of what the team is, like we said in pregame, I don't see anything really changing, especially with the skaters and the forward specifically. One way or the other trading someone out or bringing someone in. If this is what the roster is, maybe the idea of moving Katorie and Faraby around and moving lot and up, it's just a way to be able to do this more frequently. So you don't have, oh yeah, we like Ryan Pailing a lot. He played nine minutes. Like, maybe this is just kind of a way to get everyone a little bit more time. And I know Charlie, you don't believe in the exhaustion factor, but it adds up eventually. If you don't have a guy, three guys playing, you know, a third of the game every night, it's got to help. Yeah, yeah, and I, to be clear, I do think that playing it got playing guys a lot of minutes can have an impact, but I don't necessarily think it has an impact in terms of them just running out of gags. Like, for example, I think it absolutely had an impact on Travis Sandheim last year, but not because I think he ran out of gas. I think it's because the more minutes you play, the higher likelihood you have of a pup hitting you with the wrong spot and you getting banged up or something. And I think the final two, three months of the season, he was playing banged up. He was playing significantly hamper by injury. And if you give a guy 18 minutes versus 28 minutes, that's 10 fewer minutes. He has an opportunity to get hurt. So I do think there's that. Also, and the big reason why these lines, why they're having to do some interesting juggling and we agree with this is they can't mess with that catar. So like, that makes it tougher when you're like, well, we have this one line that's awesome. And then the other three, we just don't know what is quite working. And I feel like because of that, it lends itself to making some odd combos, just to kind of, kind of just throw things at the wall and hopefully stick. Like, hey, do I think Garnet Hathaway is a top six NHL forward? No, but if that line clicks, can you play top six minutes for a couple of weeks? Sure. He's not a bad player. He's a real good four checking winger who's an amazing fourth liner. And maybe for a couple of weeks, he could take, you know, 16, 17 minutes a night. If that line happens to show that, oh, there's something here. So I think that's more or less what it is. And you saw it by, as you noted, Bill, the ice time, like it's not as a show. It's already got nine minutes. It's not as a Joel Fair. We got my minutes. Fair to finish with the second most minutes in the four or two areas in the middle. So it's not like this was a punishment. I think it's just them trying to find other combos aside from the case line that maybe finds chemistry and work. Yeah. And that's like we've said all along, there aren't actually right answers. Like, I don't think there's okay. Well, now we have a set and forget like, yes, this case, this case line is working. So keep this together because we don't have the answers for like the other three lines, you know. So let's just set and forget this one and see if we can mix and match around it. There aren't right answers. So mixing stuff up like this, I think might be the most effective way to really put this team on the ice for right now. Again, should Scott Lawton be playing with Matt Vamishkov? No, not, not a ton. Probably not a ton. But if it's working for any amount of time, that's sure. Why not? What the hell is the difference? It's him. It's Joel Fairby. Like, what, you know, it's just a bunch of guys who probably aren't going to be playing with him anyway. So figure something out here. But I do want to get to the goal tending tonight because Sam Harrison stops 15 of 15 through 40 minutes. And then suddenly, we come back from intermission. And it's Alexi Colesov, coming between the pipes. Sam Harrison, like you noted, Charlie, starting, starting to look at least a lot more like himself. Now, I don't want to downplay how bad the sharks are. They have some players who can put the puck in the net, Macklin-Salbrini, very good. Looks like he has really good chemistry with Will Smith. They're going to have a good team in a few years. They are a very bad team. So like, I don't want to, I don't want to like, oh my God, the flyers dominated the shark. Yeah, of course they did. Like the flyers have some good players and the sharks really don't. So that's what it came down to. And like Georgie Evanett, he stinks and we saw that tonight. But Sam Harrison did his job. Like he saw 15 shots, he stopped 15. I don't care who the opponent is. He made 100% of the saves. And it's a real bummer, because I want to do some resolution stuff. And I saw your article, Charlie, and your, your resolution for Sam Harrison was simply don't waste this opportunity. He has, he's going to be, and you can read the article at all phly.com, sign up to be a diehard. You won't regret it. Start your new year as a diehard. Do it tonight, dammit. Like the opportunity Sam Harrison has been afforded this season. We've talked about time and time again. They don't have a number one goalie. So he's it. He's the de facto number one. And considering who the other guys are, it's like, well, he kind of has to be. But he can carve a role for himself somewhere in this organization's future. If he's productive, he's been up and down this season. And now, perhaps facing time off for injury yet again, he missed a week, came back for two games, missed like a month, started to get into form after some pretty bad starts as last two have gone well. And now you said it's probably maybe just precautionary. And that was my initial thought, because it didn't look like he was hampered in any way after that second period collision. But he didn't come back. And that's all we know now about Harrison. It just feels like one makes sense to keep all three goalies, I guess that's another smart move by the fliers. It just feels like this might be the kind of season heresons having where it's just kind of an in and out we never get any momentum going with him. Even though that collision didn't look too bad, as soon as it happened, I was like, Oh, oh, no. Because you said it just doesn't seem like he's getting a lot of luck on the injury front this season. So of course, he's gonna take what looks like, you know, not a soft collision, but didn't look like anything terrible and maybe tweak something. Or you know, like he said, maybe they're just like, this team stinks, we've got a lead. Let's just be careful and pakolian for a period. I mean, it seems like it could be something obviously put the tree out saying that it was injury, it wasn't cautionary, they didn't characterize it as that. The thing is though, it doesn't have to necessarily be the groin, which is what we're nearly 100% certain was the injury that initially kept him out, then recurred, and they kept him out for a much longer period of time. It could be a recurrence to groin. That would obviously be not like the opposite, be the, I guess, the third time in the season he'd be dealing with the same injury. I mean, it was a collision. Maybe the concussion spotters had him take attacks, like there are other possibilities here that can can result from a collision like that. One thing that annoyed me, Luke Conan, who then later had some battles with Travis Connecting. If you remember for all those, I wouldn't even say old heads because it's more just like long time BSH listeners, Luke Conan was the guy who can cause Phil Myers in the world, that same dude, this dude just has a problem with people affiliated with the flyers organization apparently. So I love that Travis Connecting gave it back to him a bit. Very, very happy to see that. But I don't know what the, what the result of this nursing injury is going to be. I really hope it's not the groin. I hope it's something else because that's when you start worrying if this is a, you know, is this just a problem he's going to be dealing with for a long time? And if that's the case, if this is a recurring career issue, then it almost doesn't matter how good he is. You can't depend upon him as your starter because you can't depend upon him to start 50 games a year without getting injured. No, it's that you get into that noiver territory where it's like, yeah, man, he's the best goalie we got, but we can't play him that much. Like, you just have to, and you just thinking about the way Ayrson plays, he's not Hossack out there. Like he's not flopping around, making a bunch of crazy saves. But he has that low base and really stretches the legs back a lot. It's part of what makes him so effective on breakaways. And I just think of that flexibility. I mean, he's a goalie obviously has to be flexible, but like that flexibility, his ability to get low and then spread out has helped him so much that. Yeah, if it's, if it gets into the Ron Heckstall thing of like, yeah, man, he's just going to deal with groins. And that's a, that's the way it goes. Well, you have to start coming up with other plans, then it's like, okay, well, what does this mean for Colossev now? And you got to believe he'll get a large majority of the playing time as long as Ayrson is out, we don't know how long that'll be yet. But I got to say, while Charlie, I know you don't love the, you know, this the split shutout. Coley earned it, man. Yeah, that looks good. Those saves he made in the third period is like, you made up for only having to play a third of this game. Yes. Still getting, still being a part of the shutout. He looked pretty damn awesome in the, in relief. He did. He made some monsters. It was funny because like the first half of the period, he barely saw a shot. And he was like, Oh, the fire is just going to have to pop the whole whole period to protect Colossev. And because everybody sees this as a chance to, to beef up their sacrifice by getting a couple extra goals to go in. And then suddenly that second half of this of the third period, like Colossev is the reason why they shot them because they probably should have gotten more or two goals during that, during that stretch. And look, this is an opportunity for Colossev now. I don't know how long Tim X is going to be out, but I have to check this way to talk a little because it hit me. And this is again, a concern of mine. I really hope it's not the growing. If you remember, Sam Harrison missed most of the 2021, 2022 season, which was his first season over North America with recurring groin issues. So you just, you're worried, like, is this just something that is going to be a problem with him? And if so, that mean that almost by default, he might not be able to be your plan as the number one, even if he proves that he's good enough. And right now the jury is very much so out on that. He's played good for the last five periods, but he was real bad for like three and a half weeks before that. But the groin thing is a little worrying for me, especially now that it hit me that he had that same issue a few years ago that basically killed the season. Hey, if that's going to be a recurring problem, all the more of an opportunity for Alexis Colosse off to step up and make a case for him to be the goalie of the president future. Yeah, if this is a groin issue again, I kind of wonder if it doesn't make sense for the flyers just to like, I don't know, sit him out. Like if you believe in him long term, which Charlie, you've suggested that the organization definitely believes that Sam Ersen is a number one goaltender in the NHL, you believe in him long term. You've got three guys, at least one of them is pretty okay, sometimes better than Ersen this season. If it's the groin again, why not just like, give him a whole year of not making stretches in the crease to fix that thing up and then come back next season. Because I don't know, like you've got these three guys, you kept them up for some reason that I don't understand. Maybe it's this, that you thought that the groin was going to be a problem ongoing. So since you have the resource and you really do think Ersen could be the guy, I don't know, maybe you just hang them up for the season, but they probably won't. I can't imagine that they're going to rush to that because they do want to learn more about how good he is. Sure. Some, some of this is them using this year to make a determination of what his ceiling is as an NHL goal. Now goal is sometimes developed later. So I don't think they'll know for certain that like this is who Ersen will always be. We've seen it with guys like Stollars and Lion, they didn't hit their ceilings until their late twenties. That's it. They're going one play like they're going unless they absolutely believe that like you need surgery to fix this issue because it's going to keep preparing otherwise. I cannot imagine they would just sit him out because they just think it's more, it's, it's valuable in their eyes to see him play. Sure. But like I just wonder like if he continues to tweak the same thing over and over and over and over again, like are you ever going to see his ceiling? And that's, it's interesting because this last time, like he missed about a week when he got the initial injury on November 2nd. He then missed about a week, played those two games. The second one was against San Jose. And then we didn't see him for like a month. And I feel like he was, he was one of those guys that was listed day to day for like two weeks. And it felt like that was the abundance of caution. Like, oh yeah, he probably would have been good like a week ago. But why not just give him another week? Because we do have the three. And let's make sure this thing is all the way good to go. And then he's back and he's struggled. Now he's finally playing well again. It's a damn it. So I don't know if they're going to want to just like shut him down. But clearly they've tried the abundance of caution thing or at least they thought they did previously. And we'll see how they proceed with this. But it's the goalie situation continues to be an ongoing saga, whether it's the health, the numbers game, whatever it is. And we're going to talk plenty of about that in the coming, you know, days and weeks. But right now I got to take a quick break to tell you about a presenting sponsor, Bet365. That's right. And we'll just have to wait and see what becomes of Sam Ersen got to believe the next time we see the flyers on the ice. It's going to be Colosov and Fidotov. Like, you got to believe there's going to be some sort of precaution taken, even if this is just, yeah, he's a little banged up. We got him out of there. It was three nothing, you know, but you have three. Why not use them? That gets us some of the other guys. And I want to integrate some of your resolutions into these Charlie, because you made a great observation on the disallowed goal. The Owen template playmaking, one of your, one of your resolutions, he needs to focus maybe just a little bit more on his, on his passing and becoming a playmaker. Pretty good tonight. Yeah, he gets the assist on the disallowed goal and then comes back and hooks up TK with a pretty damn nice pass on that power play goal, liking what I'm seeing out of him, making decisions with the puck on his stick that aren't just, I'm effing ripping it, bro. It's nice to see a little bit extra out of him. I just, you know, I think back to, and it kind of was like Harvenger, or what was ultimately to come. But I think back to Tour de Raula's first season, coaching the buyers, and Travis Anaheim, you know, he had gotten off to a really bad start, and then he had, I think, a good, like, month of December. He started getting back to the guy he was, the guy that John Ferrell had heard about before it took the job. And Tour de Raula said there was one day, I think it was after a game, and basically said, well, now I've seen it. So now he's screwed, because now I'm going to expect that from him all the time, because before, your people told me he was good, and I've never seen it. So I'm like, hey, maybe this guy is just trash, but now I've seen it, and now he's going to have to play that way all the time, because I know he's Kate will love it. And I feel like with Owen Tippett and the playmaking, that game against Columbus earlier this month, when he had those two fantastic setups, the Morgan Frost. For me, that was the, okay, it's not that you can't be a good playmaker, it's that you just haven't been. But the tools are there. You have the vision and you have the puck skills to be a good passer. Well, you show it to me. Now you've got to show it to me more, because I'm no longer going to accept the excuse of, well, you're just a shooter, you just don't have the vision, you don't have the hockey IQ. No, I've seen you make really difficult, really well executed past, and now that I know you can do it, now I'm not going to let you up hook anymore. Now I'm going to demand you do it more. And what I loved about his games tonight is he was doing it a lot to me. But once it's a loud goal, then he gets another great passion to connect the power play goal. He was making some nice feeds. And I don't, I'm not saying he has to be a 50 assisted year guy. Like, I don't think he's ever going to be that. Just get a little bit better, because not only does that, you know, make it so you're more likely to hit 60, 70 points a year if you're not completely reliant on your shots and your goals, it often makes you tougher player to defend, because then defenses and goalies can't sell out because they know that you're always going to shoot, because your own tip and all you do is shoot. If you have the threat of sending a nice feeder over to a teammate, maybe that gives you a little bit more space to shoot at, because the goalies and the defense men can't zero in on what they think you're going to do. You're just a less predictable player. I swear, and like, listen, it happened in the course of this game. So maybe it's not like, Oh my God, we noticed so in tip of this passing, we have to totally change our thought process of defending him. But early in the game, he has one of his, what are becoming like signature rush chances now, where he just beats a guy to the outside and cuts in and actually got a nice attempt on that to fit just only having the one hand on his stick. Then he has the two passes. One actually counts the other. It's like, well, I guess this is the rule with all sides reviews, whatever. In the third period, he has the puck behind the net. And it looks as if he's got a pass opened. And it's like, well, it's oh, and tip it. He's probably just going to, Oh no, the defense backed all the way off. And it allowed him to walk out and actually get a chance in front. And I'm like, it's not just the defense reacting to one game. But you see that possibility. Like if everyone is zeroed in on the shot, well, you're not going to have nearly as much room. This could actually lead you to scoring more goals, because you're actually a pretty decent playmaker. He is, I just think the sky is the limit for this dude. And it might take him a little longer to figure it out like Travis Sandheim. But it's going to be freaking worth it. Because all the tools are there. Like the only reason it doesn't work out is because he just can't put it together. Like that's that's the, oh, or like, you know, injury or something. But like actual non fluke stuff. The only reason it doesn't work out for him to be, I don't know about a point per game guy. But like you said, yeah, like 70, 80 points, maybe that could be him if he can just distribute a little bit more and he's starting to show it. And that's pretty cool. Yeah, absolutely. I'm very infused with what we're seeing out at one tip. Me too. I'm over the last let's say month. I feel like he's really gotten his game in gear. He's now pretty close to, to on pace for kind of what he did last year. Now I want to see him take a large, which I wanted to have a monster second happen. Crack 30 goals for the first time. Crack 60 points for the first time. That's cool. But at the very least, it doesn't look like this year is going to be a regression for him. And that was a legitimate concern. Every last month and a half of the year is that, oh, no, we were hoping that this guy was going to take a step forward is he may take like half step back. And now I don't think that's the case. They get the very worst. This is going to be thought of in retrospect as like a stagnation year, which isn't great, but it's a lot better than a regression. Yeah, there was nobody that was more frustrating at the start of the season than Owen tip it. So seeing him come out of it at least a little bit is good. So I hope he keeps it up because I do still have in the back of my mind, like that first third of the season almost where he just could not put the puck in the net at all. Did you barely even get to that with the ball? Yeah, it was very annoying. And that's another like, there's been so many times where we've said, dude, you have to score because when you're not scoring, you're not doing other stuff for us. And that right there, like if you can be, yeah, he's in a little bit of the last couple of weeks, he's shooting 3% just ain't working for him. Can't find the net, whatever it is, he's getting gold lead. Well, you pick up a couple of assists and suddenly you just don't look that unproductive. Like the team can still score when you're on the ice because you can do a couple of other things. Now his, his assist and his disallowed assist on the all occurred on the power play tonight. Fliers power play look decent against again a terrible penalty kill. Don't know how much stock we want to put in it. Something I do want to nitpick a little bit. Fliers have three power plays, Meshkov plays under a minute of total power, total power play time. Now that unit that was out there, a lot with Frost and TK and and Tippet, it was good. Like it looked decent, at least against this freaking team. But what are we doing? Remember what I said, I'm pregame. Could you just let him score goals so we can win a fun prize? Like, what are we doing? I get that. Okay, you can't maybe you don't want him out there for all two minutes. But like maybe start him because he has more power play points than anyone on the team did all of last year. Like Joel Faraby's out there on that power play unit. Joel Faraby has seven career power play goals. He's been around since the pandemic. Mesh already has five. Like well, Joel Faraby needs to be on this power play for what? He's a third liner. Like, what what are we doing here? That just I don't want to complain about a well coached game. Like the coach did a good job tonight. They went one, three on the power play and they probably should have went two for three. Yes, like I can be relaxed about this if it's a one day thing. But man, this is where this is where Miskov's going to eat. Like you need him. You need him producing at five on five and he has quite a bit more. And he played a good game tonight. But really, we're not going to start power plays with him on the ice. Why? What is the point of that? Yeah, it's insane. And it's not like like he's been playing better. Like he came back from that third period scratch and he's been looking very good. So like, why not put him on the it just doesn't make any sense to me. It's ridiculous. Well, he's on the power. It's just not enough. He wasn't on the unit. They got the bulk of the time. He was functionally on PP2 rather than PP1. Right. And then we're getting a minute 30 of every two minute power play. We have seen them, especially when their power play struggles. Like, I don't know if it's Rocky. I don't know if it's John. I don't know if someone's just like screw it. We throw darts at a board. But we've seen them. All right. Power play struggling. Let's start with the like quote unquote second unit and then throw the first unit out there. And that's fine. Because it's like, well, they're going to be the other team's going to get the puck and clear it within 25 seconds. And then we're going to get the other unit out there anyway. If the power play does its job, which is win the face off and maintain possession and get set up, you're never going to get the other guys out there. And that's just what happens today. It's just one small frustrating thing. Like the power play doesn't matter because it stinks so freakin bad and they're not trying to make the playoffs anyway. That's why they're running out the league's worst gold ending and not going to fix it this year. And then I get it. But like, why are you taking my enjoyment away, John? You just let me watch me scov. You just really wanted that. Yes. I'm not pretending something else. No, I want him to get lots of points so that he wins the prize. We haven't won a Calder ever ever. We haven't won a Stanley Cup in 50 years. The only like major individual award, I can remember this team winning in recent memory is the couturier self, which is a season interrupted by a pandemic. Like, I am a fan who wants to get it like, this is something. This is a goal. This is a goal for the organization, not just for Madvay Miskov. Do something interesting. Have your team in a headline for some reason other than, oh, yeah, the coach got ejected and refused to leave. Like, you know, like, do something that makes people even a little bit happy. Like, if you're the Eagles, and it's like, yeah, we won a Super Bowl a couple years ago, we went to another one. We got a chance to win it this year. Gonna be honest with you. I don't care about the single season, like, individual rushing record. Because they have other goals. Yeah, or like, it's not that big until putting on Mitchell wins defense for the year. Like, yeah, you did, but whatever. They have other goals. Other cool stuff might happen. It is a guarantee for us that like, nothing good is going to happen. And maybe they win the lottery. Well, guess what happened last time that happened? The worst thing that's happened to this franchise in five years. Like, yeah. So what's he mad? What do you know? And again, I don't want to turn this because it was a good game and they won. And it's a fun night. Combined shutout, all that fun stuff. It's just, God damn it, John. Why? I'm supporting you here. I'm a supporter of yours. Let me have my toy. Yes. All right, there is a couple other of the resolutions from Charlie's article. I wanted to get into on tonight's post game. And the one having to do with Bobby Brink's two way play. I found really interesting Chuck because yeah, we think about two way play and it's all right. Is he back checking? Is he blocking shots in the defensive zone? But so much of that to me is just like winning battles to stay on offense. Things like that mean being a just a little bit more physical, being more than just oh yeah, he's a perimeter playmaker. He might have a career on the power player or something. Being just a little bit more. And that's what we've seen out of him in the last couple of weeks since he's really joined this line with Forster and Kate's. And we saw it tonight on the who's goal was it the paling goal? It was the paling goal. Yes. He gets the puck. He fights through some traffic gets the puck out to the point on a back pass. Zamola gets the puck to the net and paling waits out, waits out the goalie and scores eventually. I was really impressed with Bobby Brink on that play. And that's something he's just been doing more of lately is winning battles. Yes. Yes. And credit to him because number one, like this isn't something where the light bulb just flips on and it's like, oh, I know how to win a puck that was. This especially for a guy who's five eight and like not a particularly big guy. This is something that the yes, some of it is learning the finer points of leverage and what to do and what not to do in terms of checking. But a lot of this is going to fashion hard work and getting stronger and just like really putting the time and effort in. You need to do that before you even get to the point where leverage matters. Like, you know what? I could spend, you know, a month, three months, six months learning the finer points of leverage and you put me on the ice, I wouldn't be able to survive even a little bit of a body check because number one, I'm not a very good skater. Number two, I'm not that strong. So it wouldn't matter that I worked real hard learning about all the, you know, geometrical, like, okay, well, how do I handle whatever? Because I'm just not strong enough. Bobby Brin, to get to the point where any of that matter, where any of that will to battle and that stuff, even matter, he had to get himself significantly stronger. And I don't think anybody realized just how much stronger he got going into the season. But he's playing like a different player this year in terms of the style. And a lot of that is that he's not shy away from contact anymore of anything. He's seeking that. Yeah, buddy, the tank this season, like a little teeny school bus out there plowing people over. And that's, you like, like, Miskov is not a big guy. But you see him and it's like, this dude is, this dude's thick. And like, when he gets, when he gets like that man body, like, you're going to see, he's going to be like a little tank. And Bobby Brin is a little bit older, but you look at him and go, yeah, he's, he's not short. He's small. Like that's the, I wouldn't call Miskov small. I call him short. And Brin is, man, yeah, that's a, that's a kid out there. And suddenly, like, he doesn't look like he put on, like the way Travis Sandheim, when he showed up at, when Sandheim showed up at camp and it was like, yo, did this dude like do steroids over the off season? He's twice the size. Brin doesn't, like he's not standing out that way to me, but you watch him play. It's, yo, there's a 50 50 puck and he came out with it again. He just keeps doing that. And that's a, that's going to keep you in the lineup. And he hasn't scored, I think in 14 games now, but he's got seven or eight assists in that span. Like he's right where he should be at around a half a point a game he's creating. And he's doing those little things that are going to keep you in a John Tour de Relle lineup, even if you're not scoring the goals yourself. So I've been a Bobby Brink fan. I loved, I was looking forward to watching him when they drafted him. Last year was fun when he made the team. And you just start thinking like, okay, where does he, where does he actually fit? This is a team of right wingers. We have, okay, well, if Misha's going to be on the right and TK is going to be on the right and they're not going to play together, we have one spot left in the top nine. And that at that position, is he going to be that guy? Is he going to be that dude? And he might be, he's making a case. He's making a case. And I did not know if that was going to be, if that would be the reality for him. Charlie, I really liked your Nick sealer resolution, because it's help Jamie Drysdale emerge. And tonight, tonight Nick sealer picks up a goal on yet another every now and then he just makes you go really guy. You can do that. Like, it's always that reminder of these dudes until they got to the NHL. We're freaking awesome and pretty much all cases. And they have it in them. It's just okay. Well, I can't do this every night because I'm not better at this than most other guys. So I got to find another way to stick in this league. He's a decent puck handler. He can make some plays. But with your resolution help Jamie Drysdale emerge. I'm just watching Nick sealer make that play tonight Chuck and thinking Nick sealer has made more standout offensive zone plays with the puck. Then I've ever seen Drysdale make. And that's a little concerning. Well, I feel like you're me to get a dry sale built too much free from a night where he finished into a six. I think he had a perfectly fine game tonight to be sure. I'm not ready to be critical Jamie Drysdale. Like number one Nick Taylor is much more developed. He's older. He's bigger. And he has a better hand on what he can and can't do in the NHL and what can and can't be done in specific instances where as it's very clear, Jamie Drysdale does not have that understanding. He just does the kidneys to play more games and just figure out the fire points of playing in each other. Is it concerning that he's not making tons of flashy super exciting offensive plays? Yeah, I guess you know, you love to be seen that that said I'm not going to be negative about Drysdale because Nick seal and does a few cool things. No, it's like, it's not an overall negativity and it's partially a joke, but it is just like, I don't know every now and that like the way we judged Colosov early in the year where it's like clearly not ready. But he shows you these flashes. And it's like if Jamie Drysdale made 10 mistakes and then made one wow play a game, I'd be like, ah, cool. Yeah. And that just really hasn't been the case. And every now and then Nick sealer does makes a wow play. I'm like, why doesn't the dude who's supposed to do that stuff do it? But yeah, I thought again, everyone played at least okay tonight. There is it. Oh, man, yeah, they really drug them down to them. Everyone was at least good. Drysdale picks up a couple of assists. That's huge for him just to have to see like your name and then some numbers. It's like, oh, okay, like that's some positive reinforcement. I did something and it resulted in this and I'm going to keep trying to do this. I'm looking forward to watching him develop. It's just like, come on, bro. Well, my point is as with all things, if Nick sealer can do that one time, why can't he do it all the time? Yeah, just do that every time. Yeah, just be better than everyone on every shift. Just do that every time. Win and Norris. And then we go to the cup. Like I don't understand why it's so difficult for Nick sealer to grasp this, be the best defenseman in the league. Goddamn it. Well, that's like my resolution for for Scott Law, which was pretend every team you play are the Detroit Greg. Yeah, it was out of the game. If you do that, you'll be a superstar. It seems simple to me. No, it's like, just do the Bobby, you shake water, but we think visualize that attack. We got to like trick them somehow, like how I wanted to put in the back of the net. A flier's jersey so that Jake Voor check and Claude Juru could try to pass into the net because obviously no one's ever going to shoot. But maybe we can get them to pass it into that. We just have to figure out how to trick some of these guys. Yeah, like Nick sealer, you're just better. You're just better than everyone. And Scott Lawton. Yeah, we play the Red Wings every night. It's weird. I know, but it's so true. But the schedule is dude, I don't know, I didn't make the schedule. Just cross out whoever you're playing and write that on the board. No one will know. I was very, I was definitely very pleased with the overall effort tonight. The team came out and did exactly what they had to do. They gave up 15 shots through 40 minutes. They were better than an inferior team. And that's why it's like, Oh, well, who cares? They beat a bad team. That's the progress. Like, that's the okay. You can see the gains for Bobby Brink against the team like this for Noah Kate's for Tyson Forster for Owen Tippett against a team like this, where it's they don't have the toughest matchup. They can dictate a little bit better of the pace. It was a good display for them to close out 2024. Oh, absolutely. And this was a very much mixed bag calendar year for the flowers because they got off the office. It's a great start to begin laughing. But a lot of that happened in 2023. Yeah. And then they have a real good January. Some of their best games were in January. So it starts out good. In the February, they're fine. Then the March, April thing, and then they start out this season play poorly. So not the best calendar year for the Philadelphia Flyers. They had some moments, you know, they had, you know, some games here and there. As I said, January was real good. This month hasn't been gray, but November was pretty good. It hasn't been all bad. But I would say that coming out of 2023 with the momentum, it seemed like they had would have been nice if this would have been a better year for the team. But at the very least, they finished it out. They certainly did. And now before we go any further, I got to tell you about our friends at Rothman orthopedics. Okay. Now without any further ado, Charlie, it is time for your three stars of the game. Hit us with star number three. Start over three. I'm going to cheat a little bit and I'm going to say it is the goalies because I feel like I can't give the third star to Lexi Colesaw for making some good saves in a third period where the outcome was no longer in doubt. I also feel like I can't fully give the same air so because you didn't finish the game. Sorry, that was the rules. You didn't play the full game. Unfortunately, you got hurt and that's things, but sorry, got to play the whole game to get a star. So I'm going to give it to the gold medal because they got a combined shot, so they get a combined third star. I thought Ericsson was strong despite the baggating phase of tonic quality shots. He made the saves when he had to and allowed the flyers to build the big lead. And then Paul's all came in and made some monster stops in the third to make sure they got the shot out. So for that reason, the goalies are my third star. All right, time for star number two. So number two, I'm going to go with Owen tip and I thought he was really good all game. I know he only finishes with the one assist. Probably should have gotten to assist because let's be honest. I'm of the belief I'm going a little rare. I'm of the belief and there should be a time limit between the entry that is a little bit offside to the goal. If the entry is offside and then immediately you score, I'm cool with that being overturned. But if the goal is scored 15 seconds after the initial entry, sorry, you had enough time to win the puck back and clear. That's on you. I think there should be a time limit of like five, six seconds post-entry. And after that, sorry, it's officially onside deal with it. In any case, gets one assist, probably should add two because that was just a great pass by him on the power plate earlier in the game. But I thought he was flying the whole game. I thought he was just skating well. He was making plays. He was attacking. He just looks like the best version of Owen Tippett. I know he only got the one point, but he's an easy choice for my second star. Yeah. And it's like obviously they take one off the board. So you're thinking, oh, we had two. But yeah, when you look at the box score, I thought Owen Tippett was the most noticeable guy on the ice for the Flyers. He's like, Oh, like Jamie Drysdale had two assists and you only had one. That's weird. I'm not not to crush Jamie Drysdale again. Like everyone played well, it's just he was, I thought the most noticeable flyer tonight. So I'm very interested to find out who you gave the first star to start number one, Chuck. I'm gonna get first star to our boy Ryan Pele. I thought he had a strong game and I thought he stepped up given the opportunity to play with scores. He was on the line with with with Tippett and and connect me the real fast line. You called the NASCAR line, whatever. I don't know all great skaters, but this is this is an opportunity for him. How do I think that it's going to stick for a long time? No, probably not. Realistically, it's not going to be a permanent thing. But if you're Owen Tippett and you're going into this game, you're like, hey, you know, one could make a case in this game. I am the first line center given my line. I need to show that I can do this. And then I deserve these opportunities. He went out there, just put a really nice goal. I thought he played a strong all around game. He was noticeable. He was good on the penalty kill, which has been a problem for him and the entire penalty kill. I know it's I know it's the sharks, but you know, baby steps here. Got him strong. Yeah, he had a strong game and it was a strong game where he got an opportunity to play up the line up with better line mates. Any show that he can handle it for that reason? He's my first star. That's good stuff. When when we were getting ready to go live, they're giving out the player the game on on the broadcast and they gave it to Yegor Zamoula. I was like, honestly, I think I would have given it to Kolosov just because that was, to me, just an impressive you came in cold and we've seen him do that before and look real, real bad. I was really impressed. But yeah, that was it's a good game for guys like that. As much as it's a pad, the stats game for certain guys, I'm glad like Nick sealer gets a goal. Yegor Zamoula picks up some points like guys who don't always score a ton. Get on the board tonight. That's a it's a big team win. You allowed none. You scored four good stuff. All right. That is almost all the time we have for you on our New Year's post game. But of course, we got a super chat. Super chat. So Brenna, first one from our friend, Gritzy Ross. Happy New Year, Bill Charlie, Kelly, and Brenna. Thank you very much. Thank you to everyone who joins us for all the shows, the pre games, post games, the regular thing that we get to do once or twice a month now with all the everything else. But it's it's awesome to have you guys in audience. We're happy to be bringing in the new year with you. All right. Let's hit this next one from Benjamin Branscombe. Just want to say Happy New Year, gang. Can't wait to see y'all on the 11th. That is a great opportunity for me to tell you, yeah, the 11th, it is sold out. You can't get in at least into our suite. I'm sure you can find tickets everywhere, maybe game time. But he can't come to our suite. We've sold all the tickets for the cutter game. But if you want to hang out with us, why don't you come with us to Montreal? Damn it. To Montreal, it is going to be an awesome trip. It's near the end of the season, April 4th to the 7th Flyers v Canadian's and who knows, man, maybe, maybe Myschka v Hudson is the Calder race at that point and we'll get to see them go head to head. But we're doing it with Philly sports trips. It's going to be an awesome time. I got an opportunity to talk to Brian prop the other day, check out that interview on our YouTube page. He's going to be on this trip with a meet and greet. All sorts of great stuff plan for this. Check it out. All PHL Y dot com. Hit that events tab. All right. This next super chat here from Gary B bill. I took Flyers money line and TK to scores who got the early payout, but missed Mac to score and Matthew Myschka. I don't know how that same game parlay works. Yeah, it's it's rough sometimes. It's it gets marked a winner, but it's listen, don't follow any of my bets. That's all I'll tell you. I am getting absolutely freaking crushed this season. I thought this was a great game to get that over. Yeah, it's like two of the four worst defensive teams in hockey. Why not? No, we get a freaking shutout because of course we do. Yeah. Matthew Myschka v. Why wouldn't he score against celebration? Well, he didn't. It is what it is. But we just keep betting. That's what we do. You eventually break even. I think that's how it works. That's like regression or something. Charlie taught me all about it. Well, that's 50. The problem is that's the regression happens. You regress to your true talent level. So if your true talent level is a better is real bad. Regression isn't a good. Yeah, I can make too many. I just I'm an emotional that math. Yeah. I question that. I think that's going to motion and vibes. You know, that's how you should that make out Rachel Dory. So you want to be able to add a little bit. Check it out. All right. Let's hit this next one here. From there. Why not us? Yeah, I know what Vince. We do not want to start the new year on a negative note. Won't mention that the sharks are absolutely freaking terrible. That matters. Yeah. Why not us? Why you're right? 2025 could absolutely be our year. If not for the Stanley Cup, maybe the draft flattery. Who's to say? Calder trophy. The Calder trophy. Yeah. Alexi Colosov. Calder chew. Calder trophy champion. How was that noise? Oh, oh, Ava has a noise maker out in the living room and scared. There's an animal. All right. We still have 25 minutes. Anyway, from Adam s maybe sealer. Maybe sealer is that high end offensive defense in the fliers. But that's what we're looking for. Love you guys. Happy new year, especially to Hanks. Yeah, listen, I'm just happy for guys like Nick sealer when they have a night where it's like they stand out because it's cool. They're usually just absorbing blocked shots, breaking toes that no one even knows they broke, hoping to get the feeling back in their leg. Yeah, like, it's it's all unappreciated work a lot of the times. And when you get to see him have a highlight play, it's hard not to be happy for a dude like Nick sealer. Yeah. I agree. All right. This next one from Timbo slice also met a few people who did the whole three game road trip. We travel well and damn, this was an awesome series to watch in person. All three games were peak. I love that. Timbo has been Timbo has been on this road trip with the fliers. I believe he's going to Vegas. So we'll see about how they follow up. But pretty decent trip for the team so far. They've, you know, they beat Anaheim. They win tonight. They've looked pretty good. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, they've been so up and down. It's hard to be like, Oh, well, now they're going to find consistency. Like, I don't know, they beat two teams that are bad. But they're supposed to. I'm happy for the people who went out and traveled this week. That's cool. Yeah. All right. This next one from W Boro goal. I have been with you guys since Bill was fielding calls on Facebook live. Oh my God. So there's one for old Lang Zine. Oh my God. Remember show the couch? Just there would be these like raids of like trolls or something who would come into random Facebook lives. Pretend that they were there for someone selling a couch and demand to see the couch. And this looks a wild place, man. It somehow became our career. I don't know, man, but the years can be very weird. Sometimes that's the moral of the story. They absolutely can. But thank you for being with us this whole time. It's been it's been an awesome freaking ride. And we ain't going nowhere. Like I can't. I got a contract. So this is all I'm going to be doing. All right. Do we have another? Yes. We do from a personima. Drysdale is puck purgatory on power play frost. He does he has he has some decision making skills to acquire on where to move the puck when to move the puck how quickly. But this is where this is what these seasons are for is teaching and ultimately figuring out if guys have it or not. I still have optimism for Drysdale. But yeah, you see open guys sometimes and it just takes him an extra second. He's like, maybe I can. Oh, okay. There he is rather than moving the puck super quickly. It is what it is right now. I don't think he was terrible tonight. No, no, no, no, no. He picks up to it since one was on the power play. Yeah, he's not a high end power play quarterback yet. They're hoping they can develop them into one. I guess we'll see. I think that's what people liked about about Samoula last year. It was like, well, he's just going to fire it because it's not like he's going to like dangle someone or make an awesome like backhand sauce pass. He's just going to fire and we'll get it. We'll get a touch push in the crease and it worked. And I think people kind of missed that a little. All right. Do we have any more? We have another Timbose slice also also Happy New Year. PHL Y. Bill Charlie Kelly. Love you all. Keep being awesome. I certainly plan. We will certainly plan on remaining awesome in 2025. That's my that's my New Year's resolution to to change the loss. Yeah, keep being awesome. All right. Do we is that it? That is the end of I think that's it. All right. I think that's it. That is it. And that will do it for the PHL Y Flyers post game show.
