The Craig Way Show
Texas to face Ohio State in CFP Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl
From Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, it's the Chick-fil-A peach bowl. The quarter-final round on the college football playoff. The Texas Hall Awards against the Arizona State Sun Devils. On first down, play action. Viewers over the middle with a big catch of the 40, 45. This is Matthew Golden, the Midfield Golden, in a foot race to the 30, to the 20, and Golden who had a big game here in the SEC Championship game. Takes it all the way down to the 15-yard line of Arizona State. It'll be first down Texas. Officially, they're going to mark him down to the knee touchdown to the 22. So it's a 50-4-yard game. Now, Jaden Blue in the backfield, shifts in motion to the right. Pumps and pass to the right. That ball is caught. Touchdown, Texas DeAndre Moore. Well, that didn't take long. Two plays. And the law board's strike right back and take the lead. So he sets the puck now, and the law board's set up the return. High kick. Back paddling, Golden fields. It gets away from one Sunday. It turns it up here, 35-40. Here's Silas to Midfield. Golden to the 40, pull the 30. Say a good night to this one. Silas, Golden brings it back all the way for a touchdown. 74 yards. Lemon under center on four down. Hands off, scataboo. He's hit. He's rocked. The law boards hold. And Texas will take over on downs. Ham, scataboo. The one who said he couldn't be stopped is stopped. Up first down, he swings back a pass. Upfield goes Wieser. Trade to the 40, 35. To the 30, Wieser inside and down the other 20-yard line. Nice run after the catch by Contravian Wieser. He takes it 23 yards down to the Arizona State 21. On four down and two, yours, throws it to the air. It's caught by Golden. It's a first down. Matthew Golden comes through again. The ball down at the eight-yard line. Lofted it in the air, Golden had to climb the ladder. And he did a five-yard catch with a first down. Well, you aren't kidding. He did have to elevate and also make sure he got that foot down and bounds it. Six feet tall, he played big right there. Snapping home to pick his up. Bird Auburn's field goal is good. A 54 remaining in the half. Texas extends the lead now. The margin is 14 points. The law board dropped by a 17 to three count. 11 out of the shotgun as Cam's scataboo off set to his left side. On four down and 10 at the Texas 34, shotgun snap. Back to 11, steps up in the pocket. Scrambles left, wrapped up, down he goes. Train more, state with him, wrapped him up, and trapped him for a four-yard loss. And for the second time in his first half, the football will go over on downs to the wall boards. Near the right half, 36-yard field goal climb. This kick is up in it. It's either partially blocked or just never shot goal, it's no goal. And Arizona State comes away empty handed. 11th in the shotgun, up to the line of scrimmage, perhaps, to change the play call. Now back in the pistol. Fourth and goal of the Texas 2. Hand off, Cam's scataboo is driven down. Down he goes, he kept climbing fourth, but he was only able to regain a line of scrimmage. The long one deep, that's a stone wall. Pulling again the day, Anthony Hill, and Baron Sorelle and Andrew Makuba team up again. Once more, the sun doubles are turned away at the goal. Third down, and 13 for Arizona State at the Texas 15-yard loss. Levett from the shotgun, has the snap. Back to throat. What's under pressure? He goes down. Helen Simmons records another sack. It's a loss of four, and it brings up four shots of the shotgun, shifting DeAndre Moore in motion from right to left. Three receivers, wide lap, one of the shorts on split line. Blitz coming from the sun doubles, yours, going down the sidelines looking for Matthew Gough. He caught it. What a catch by Golden. Inside the 10 down with a nine-yard line. Looked up over the shoulder. What a throw, what a catch, 29 yards. It's first and goal with the nine. Five-yard line. When yours out of the shotgun, shotgun snap, yours looks to throw pressure coming. Scramble's right, still looking. You won, pin number five. Quinn dies. Touchdown, Quinn, yours. Yours tucked it in at the last moment. Transcredient, a dive into the end zone. QV-1 with a huge Texas touchdown. Yours out of the shotgun, the two receivers out wide line. Blitz look from Arizona State. Quinn, in the gun. Ready to take the snap, has the snap. 4th and 13, yours looking. Fires, he's got Golden Open, he caught it. Touchdown, Lexus, Matthew Golden strikes again. 28 yards on 4th down and 13. And the law board scoring touchdown. First and 10, Texas at the Arizona State 25-yard line. A line up in the pistol, Weister, the beat back, play action. Yours looking to throw, steps up. Fire's down, feel for him. He caught it. Touchdown, Texas, back to back plays. And this time, Gunnar Helm catches the touchdown pass from Quinn, yours. And the law boards are back in front. Yours doing a great job. There was some heat coming. He stepped up in the pocket. And then through a strike to Gunnar Helm, how about his last two throws, a 4th down touchdown and then a double overtime touchdown to give Texas the lead. Now the law boards have to go for two for a roll. Yours to take the snap. Shifts Blooter is right now. As the snap, yours rolls right. Looks, fires for the end zone. It is caught to a two-point conversion. Guess who? Matthew Golden, a two-point conversion. Catch. And Texas leads, 39-31. Three receivers out wide left for a issue. Now Scatterboos shifts to the left side from the quarterback Sam Levitt on third down. Play action. Levitt looks, fires for the end zone. That's intercepted. Pick off. Intercepted. Cuba, Cuba. This ball game is over. Texas is going to the final four. The law boards win it in double overtime. 39-31. What a ball game, folks. An instant classic in the college football playoff in Texas this time on the right side of history. Good afternoon. Cameron Parker with you as we begin our three of the Craigway. She'll fling in for Craig who is up in Norman, Oklahoma, Texas women's basketball in action tonight. Number five versus number nine as Texas takes on the Sooners. 745 pregame start on 103-1 FM. Tip off time, eight o'clock. Craigway and Kathy Arston will have the call. So I'm with you for today's show. No show tomorrow. That's because Craig will be traveling back and I'll be on the road with the Texas men's basketball team traveling the college station, but the morning kickoff will hold it down for you from seven to nine a.m. and then back to normal next Monday with Craig and myself back in the studio. But what a game for the Texas Longhorns. Again, they led early on after trailing three nothing. Up 14-3, 17-3, 24-8 in the fourth quarter. Thought that Quinn Ewer's touchdown run was going to be enough. It was not Arizona State. Would pull out everything but the kitchen sink in this game. You had a fake punt. You had a cam scataboo passing touchdown. You had pretty much everything. Two two point conversions converted. You got to give credit to Kenny Dillingham in Arizona State. A fantastic football team that played their guts out in Texas despite a couple of big miscues, costly turnover, some poor penalties, some bad execution and not able to get the run game going. Longhorns able to come from behind in overtime and win this game 39-31. Funny enough, it wasn't the first time Texas had played an overtime game in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium because in the SEC Championship, Texas would end up falling to Georgia in that game 22-19. In overtime, Steve Sarkisian was asked about it yesterday in the Post Game Press Conference. If that overtime loss played a role in how he prepared for overtime in this game. Yeah, you know, I felt like the way the game was going tonight, I definitely wanted to stay aggressive. You know, and even though in the first overtime, we kind of took a shot on the first play and it wasn't quite there and then we came back and then we get a false start after the run and then we get the second false start. That's how we end up in the fourth and 15. I just, I feel like we wanted to be aggressive. And that's why we got the first play to come right back out for the second overtime. State aggressive, trusting your best players to make plays between Quinn, Connor, Matthew, and those guys have been so clutch for us all year. We find a way to get the ball in their hands and see what they could get done. And so that was a mentality. You know, I guess I'll take a third overtime if we can get back here on the 20th, right? So if that's what it takes, so we'll keep everybody on their toes a little bit. Texas will have to be Ohio State next week to get back to Atlanta National Championship Game January 20th back at Mercedes Bend Stadium. Jadi Barron also in the Post Game Press Conference alongside Quinn and Steve Sarkeesian. He was asked about Quinn's performance and if it surprised him and what he made of it of QB1 delivering a comeback for the horns in overtime. >> I mean, this starts all like during the summer, you know, our culture wins that is, and again, just open up one another. But, I mean, I wish I was circuit. He could have a card. So we do these culture things on, I would say Friday, but, you know, today's not Friday. So it'd be Tuesday. We do a Tuesday night, a team activity. We'll be writing a card. And in the card, I will just thank him, Sarkeesian. And the last bullet point was Quinn's going to play fast. And the reason he's going to play fast is because he's got the creator. He's going to give all his worries, everything he has. And now he's just going to give it to him. He's just going to allow him to play free. And I think that's what Quinn did when our backs against the wall. He just kept fighting. He made some big time plays in those three throws. >> Now on Jadi on facing Cam Skadibu. Obviously, Cam Skadibu earlier in the week said, no one could stop him after the win over Iowa State said he was the best running back in the country. And he delivered in this game. He did it on the ground. He did it in the air. He did it receiving as well. Overall, in this game, total Skadibu, say pull up the stats real quick on the ground. Skadibu had 99 rushing yards, 12.4 yards per carry. Sorry, sorry, there's receiving yards. Rushing yards, 143 yards total. Two touchdowns, average 4.8 yards per carry. Texas did stop him, but there was times where they did not stop him, including the first overtime touchdown. Receiving yet eight receptions, 99 yards, including that 62 yard reception down the sideline. And then passing had a 42 yard touchdown completion. Cam Skadibu literally did it all. And so here was Shadi Baron and asked about facing Cam Skadibu. >> I mean, as a competitor, you know, it's fun. It's fun when guys, you know, I mean, they say what they say before the game and that's just his confidence level and things like that. But just to go out there with my guys and just to keep fighting, you know, I think we kept fighting. Sometimes, you know, if we had a penalty and they got another drive, another play, we just continued to fight. And I think ultimately that's what it means. And that's what a brotherhood means here in the culture and level bond that we have and the level bond that we share. >> I'm trying to, you know, recall my mind, a player of Skadibu's caliber who played the way he did against Texas in terms of just not being able to stop them. I think Michael Pennick's junior last year in the Sugar Bowl semifinal, he was something that I feel like Texas just really could not stop. Like, who else comes to mind? Sidi Lamb, Oklahoma, Calamari, Oklahoma. There's not a lot of guys who I thought played like Cam Skadibu did against Texas yesterday. They have in years past in terms of just really being a one-man wrecking crew, there's been, I mean, Sidi Lamb, the Cotton Bowl, the one year in which they went to what? Four over times, he was unstoppable in that game. Calamari, the year, the kicker, the second half come back. It felt like Texas really could not stop Calamari in that second half and it felt like Texas in that in this game could not stop Cam Skadibu whether he was running the ball, throwing the ball, or catching the ball. A fantastic job done. I believe he was the offensive MVP of this game. He deserved it, a fantastic running back, and he's going to make an excellent running back at the next level. Last quote for you before we hit this break and get you an update on Georgia Notre Dame, by the way. Last year, I mentioned the Washington game, Michael Penic, Jr., obviously college football, semi-final text to lose that game. How much did that game help in this game, in this situation? Another college football playoff game coming down to the wire. You can't really coach your teacher experience, so just the amount of maturity and poise that we have in these games I think has definitely helped us over time. You know, Sanki told us that I have time. This was the point where we were at last year and we didn't have a business and just to be able to have another opportunity to go out there and go out there and have a business. That was a blessing. You could do that. So him just continuing to just fight us and just push us through that missed adversity and things like that. So, you know, I'd say from a coach's perspective, the more times we get in these moments, you know, whether it's now back to back years of being in the playoff, back to back years, being in the final four, playing at a big 12 championship and winning it last year, you know, winning, you know, competing in the SEC championship this year, going on the road a year ago to Alabama, going on the road this year in Michigan. We've been in some pretty big environments, some pretty cool arenas, some pretty big games that not to say that these aren't great experiences. They are. These are amazing experiences for these guys. But the moment at this point doesn't seem too big, right? We're not in awe that this is where we're supposed to be. And I think that they understand that and then they get back to their preparation so that we can try to play our best football. But that's what experience gives you. It gives you, you know, being on the stage, being in the arena and understanding what it's like to be in the arena so that you can focus on your play rather than all of the other stuff that's going on. And now Texas will take on errors. I'm sorry, take on Ohio State next week, Friday, 6.30 p.m. kickoff time. Our coverage will begin locally 3.30 p.m. with our pregame show, Myself, Mike Harge in Mark Henry. And of course, network coverage begins at 5.30. Craigway, Roger Wallace in Will Matthews live from the Cotton Bowl, 18 T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. That's your postgame sound from Steve Sarkeesian, Quinn Ears, and Shoddy Baron update for you in the college football playoff quarter final at the Allstate Sugar Bowl right now. A three, three game all tied up in the second quarter. Georgia, I mentioned Aidan Smith had a long reception from Gunnar Stockton. They would settle for a 41 yard field goal Notre Dame with the ball back, their first real sustained drive of the game. Finally, moving the ball down the field. They would also settle for a field goal. Mitch Cheetah, a 44 yarder, 3-3. Georgia would just punt after picking up one first down. So Notre Dame getting the ball back with 5-47 to go in the second quarter. All tied up at three apiece. The winner will take on Penn State next week. We're just starting our three here today's program. More to come as the Craigway show continues after this.
Hour 3 of Thursday's show begins with highlights from the Longhorns' win over Arizona State, audio from Steve Sarkisian, Quinn Ewers, and Jahdae Barron, and a look at the Ohio State Buckeyes.
