The quarter-final round on the college football playoff, the Texas World Warms, against the Arizona State Sun Devils. On first-down, play action, viewers. Over the middle with a big catch of the 40, 35. This is Matthew Golden, the midfield Golden, in a foot race to the 30 to the 20, and Golden got a big game here. And the SEC Championship game takes it all the way down to the 15-yard line of Arizona State. It'll be first-down Texas. Officially, they're going to mark him down to the knee touchdown to the 22, so it's a 15-40-yard game. Now, Jayden Blue in the backfield, shifts in motion to the right, pumps, and pass to the right. That ball is caught. Touchdown, Texas Deon Raymore. Well, that didn't take long, two plays, and the law horn's strike right back and take the lead. So he sets the puck now, and the law horn's set up for return. High, kick, back, battling, Golden, fields it gets away from one Sunday, and it turns it up, field, 35-40. Here's Silas to midfield, Golden, to the 40, pull the 30, say a good night to this one. Silas, Golden, brings it back all the way for a touchdown, 74 yards. Lemon under center on four down, he ends off, Skataboo, he's hit, he's dropped. The law horn's home, and Texas will take over on down. Cam Skataboo, the one who said he couldn't be stopped, is stopped. Up first down, you will swing back, a pass, up, field goes wiser. Trade to the 40, 45 to the 30, plays for inside, and down near the 20-yard line. Nice run after the camp by Contravian Weisner, he takes it 23 yards down to the Arizona State 21. On four down to yours, throws it to the air, it's caught by Golden, it's a first down. Matthew Golden comes through again, the ball down at the eight-yard line, wafted it in the air, Golden had to climb the ladder, and he did a five-yard catch in the first down. Boy, you aren't kidding, he did have to elevate and also make sure he got that put down and bounds it. Six feet tall, he played big right there, and snap and holds, but kick is up. Burn Auburn's field goal is good, a 54 remaining in the half, Texas extends the lead now, the margin is 14 points, the long ones are up by a 17 to three down. Leven out of the shotgun as Cam Skataboo off, sent to his left side. On four down and 10 at the Texas 34, shotgun snap, back to Leven, steps up in the pocket, scrambles left, wrapped up, down he goes, trade more, state with him, wrapped him up, and trapped him for a four-yard loss, and for the second time in this first half, the football will go over on downs to the long ones. Here are the right half, 36-yard field goal trial, this kick is up and it's either partially blocked or just never got going, it's no good, and Arizona State comes away empty handed. Leven, in the shotgun, up to the line of scrimmage, perhaps to change the play call, now back in the pistol, torch and goal of the Texas two, hand off, Cam Skataboo and driven down. Down he goes, he kept driving fourth, but he was only able to regain the line of scrimmage, the long one defense, a stone roll, holding again the day, Anthony Hill, and Baron Sorrell and Andrew Makuba team up again, once more, the Sun Devils are turned away at the goal. Thurn down and 13 for Arizona State of the Texas 15-yard loss. Leven, from the shotgun, has the snap, back to throat, looks under pressure, he goes down! Helen Simmons records another sack, it's a loss of four, it brings up four down. Out of the shotgun, shifting DeAndre Moore in motion from right to left, three receivers, wide lap, all in shorts, that split light, Leven's coming from the Sun Devils, viewers, going down the sidelines, looking for Makuba, he caught it, what a catch by Golden, inside the ten down of the nine-yard line, looked up over the shoulder, what a throw, what a catch, 29 yards, it's first in goal with the nine, five-yard loss. When viewers out of the shotgun, shotgun snap, viewers looks to throw pressure coming, scrambles right, still looking, you run, win number five, win dies, touchdown, win viewers! Viewers tucked it in at the last moment, ran straight in, I've died within the end zone, QV1, well that huge Texas touchdown. Viewers out of the shotgun, the two receivers out wide right, Lynch looked from Arizona State, win in the gun, ready to take the snap, pass the snap, fourth and 13, viewers looking, fires, he's got Golden Open, he caught it, touchdown, Texas, Matthew Golden strikes again, 28 yards, on fourth down and 13, and the Lawmore in story touchdown, first in ten, Texas at the Arizona State 25-yard line, a line up in the pistol, Weister, the deep back, play action, viewers looking the first, steps up, fires down, feel for him, he caught it, touchdown, Texas, back to back plays, and this time, Gunnar Helm catches the touchdown pass from Quinn Ears, and the Lawmore's are back in front. Viewers doing a great job, there was some heat coming, he stepped up in the pocket, and then through a strike to Gunnar Helm, how about his last two throws, a fourth down touchdown, and then a double overtime touchdown to give Texas the lead, now the Lawmore's have to go for two, for a home, viewers to take the snap, shifts Bloom to his right now, pass the snap, viewers roles right, looks, fires for the end zone, it is caught, to the two-point conversion, guess who, Matthew Golden, a two-point conversion catch, and Texas leads 39-31, three receivers out wide left for ASU, now Scatterboos shifts to the left side of the quarterback, Sam Levitt on third down, play action, Levitt looks, fires for the end zone, it's intercepted, picked off, intercepted, and Drew Makuba, this ball game is over, Texas is going to the final four, the Lawmore's winning in double overtime, 39-31. Never a doubt right, holy cow, good afternoon here on this Thursday edition of The Craigway Show, Texas defeating Arizona State in the college football playoff quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl, 39-31 in double overtime, a game that began very quickly for the Lawmore's on the good side, felt like they were going to run away with it, Arizona State kept fighting back, and despite a 24-8 lead for Texas, the Sun Devils would end up tying the game, and two missed field goals later in regulation, the game would go the overtime, Arizona State would end up leading in overtime, and then Texas, back-to-back throws from Quinn Ewers would put the Lawmore's in front, and then Andrew Makuba, the hometown Austin native, with the game sealing interception, and now the Lawmore's are back in the college football playoff semi-finals for the second consecutive year, or they'll face a familiar quarterback, Will Howard, in Ohio State, next Friday in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium, it's the Cotton Bowl with a 6-3 PM kickoff. Good afternoon, Cameron Parker filling in for Craigway, and Craig, out today, because, well, he's traveling to Norman, Oklahoma, as Texas will take on the Oklahoma Sooners and women's basketball tonight, but Craig, fortunate enough to be able to spend some time with us this afternoon right now here on the Craigway show, and Craig, you've had some fantastic fourth-down calls during your Texas football career. I mean, even the last two seasons, it feels like every other game, there's a fourth-down goal line stand from this defense, whether it's Kansas State last year, A&M this year, Clemson, Arizona State this year, and of course, there's a fourth-and-five, Finch Young against USC, the National Championship, his game-winning touchdown. Now, the fourth-down conversion in overtime, it's probably not the same as fourth-and-five, Craig, but it's definitely up there. Yeah, you know what it kind of reminded me of a play that happened 20 years ago, it was fourth-down and 17, I believe it was, fourth-and-eight, 18, and Texas was on the ropes at Kansas, and Finch Young picked it up on what seemingly looked like three strides that you just kind of delighted in for 23 yards, and then two plays later was able to throw a game-winning touchdown pass to Tony Jeffrey, and the impact of that game was, and I'd mention this, is that if he doesn't convert that, because Texas was down to Kansas 23-13 with like just under four minutes to go, if he doesn't convert that, that fourth-and-eight team play, Texas doesn't win that game at Kansas, they don't go to the Rose Bowl to play Michigan, and I don't think it sets the stage for the great run next year to win the National Championship. Put it this way, they would have had to do a lot more, would have been a lot harder path to get to that Rose Bowl than when they started at number two next year, because the way they finished 2004 season with that thrilling win over Michigan in the Rose Bowl, they never would have been in the Rose Bowl, they would have gone to the Alamo Bowl and said, and even when they won that, and then when their last game, you had Aaron Rodgers playing for Cal at the time, grumbling and griping, saying they deserve to go, Cal instead of Texas, they didn't get the bid, Cal, by the way, went promptly down the coast to play Texas, attacking the holiday bowl, and beat him by I think 17 points of tech team that lost at home by 30 to Texas, so all of that stuff was put in motion by the fourth and 18 run by Vince Young, and I think, you know, obviously the long ones were down to their last down there on 4th down and 13 and if Quinn Eures doesn't make the pass for the touchdown, they don't win the game yesterday and their season is over, but he was so cool and so calm under it, they said in the post game press conferences that they worked at playing practice against the blitz with zero coverage, where they was just man coverage and there was Matthew Golden able to get to the end zone. Yeah, we have some post game sound from from Sarkin Quinn Eures that we'll play later on in the show and to your point, Craig, they said, yeah, we practice that same play against that same defensive look, and we got it against Arizona State and Texas executed it perfectly. Real quick, Craig, before we hit this break, hopefully you can stay with us for one more segment. Sure. The grit and determination from Quinn Eures, I mean, it reminds me of a lot of other past Texas quarterbacks like Sam Ellinger, like Colt McCoy, like Vince Young that just no matter what they seem to always show up in the big moments. I totally agree with all of that. He's a gritty tough guy and I'll give you one more name as well, and there's a reason why I would say this name. The other name that I would toss in here would be Chris Sims because Chris Sims went through a lot and he went through some adversity and Chris Sims to this day, I think remains the most unappreciated quarterback in Texas history, but Quinn Eures is quickly climbing ladder. There was a great piece written in the athletic today by Sam Cahn, or after the game last night, about how Texas fans so many, not all of them, but there are a lot of Texas fans ready to move on. Let's move on to Harge and they're not appreciating Quinn, not only for the moment, what he's doing, but for what this team is doing, getting back to the final four. And I think Sam made a good point and, you know, when my scramble to get to the airport yesterday, after we got off the air and make a flight to get the Dallas Fort Worth to connect, to get up here to Oklahoma City, to get to Norman to call this huge women's game tonight between number five, Texas, the number nine OU opening up SEC play. But as I was scrambling through, I read a lot of the things on social media and there was just a lot of people that just were more happy grumbling about the things that didn't work than the things that did work. And in a memorable double overtime game, a win for Texas, which by the way, makes them the first team in college football playoff history to win all six New Year's six ball games. The only one they had one was the peach ball. Well, now they've done that. So I think there's an unappreciation, not only for Quinn, but really for this long-term team overall, and hopefully folks will appreciate it a little more as they move into the final four for the second straight year. Sam, with us for one more segment, Craig, got ahead a break. We'll continue the breakdown this game and also talk about Texas basketball against Oklahoma tonight. A huge SEC opener, and then a big win for the men's. On Saturday, they take on A&M down in college station, seven PM tip off time. We'll be back here on the Craig way show just getting started, recapping Texas's victory over Arizona State in the college football playoff quarter final.
