Welcome to True Crime, the Court of Public Opinion, and this special episode of Alexis Knight Investigates. In this episode, we're going to dive into something that is changing everything, artificial intelligence. And I'm talking about the AI you use every day, from chatbots to face filters. But guess what, this is not all harmless fun. As we move into 2025, AI is deeply embedded in crime, if you didn't know, both in committing it and fighting it. Deep fakes, AI-generated scams, predictive policy. This technology is reshaping the way crimes are carried out and solved. And with that comes power, danger, and let's be real, a lot of unanswered questions. So where are we now? Where are we headed? And how is AI being used to blur the lines between justice and chaos? This is Alexis Knight Investigates, AI, crime, and the thin digital line. Let's get into it. Okay, now let's start with the dark side. How AI is being used to commit crimes that frankly feel like something out of a sci-fi thriller. Now picture this, you're scrolling through your phone and a message pops up. It's a video of your boss, or maybe a loved one, asking you for a favor or some urgent help. I mean, it looks real, it sounds real. Why would it be anything else? But here's the twist, it's not. It's a deep fake. AI-generated content that is so convincing, it's almost impossible to tell that it is fake. 89% of business leaders say AI is a top priority. But with AI tools popping up everywhere, how do you separate the helpful from the hype? The right choice is crucial, which is why teams at one-third of Fortune 500 companies use Grammarly. Eighteen plus, terms and conditions apply. Without some expert analysis. These deep fakes are becoming weapons for blackmail, scams, and even disinformation campaigns. Imagine the chaos they could create in courtrooms or politics. And it doesn't stop there. Scammers are now using AI tools like the worm GPT and fraud GPT. These are not your average chatbot skies. These are designed for cyber criminals to automate phishing scams, write malware, and craft fake legal documents. Yup, and the result, crimes that once took weeks now happen in seconds. And then we've got the pig butchering scams. And yes, that is the actual term. These scams lure victims into fake investment schemes, with AI powered chat tools pretending to be trusted financial advisors. It's like having a con artist who never sleeps. And don't think it's just money thereafter. AI is also being used to hack into systems, bypass security measures, and even impersonate voices. The digital age has opened the door for crimes we never imagined possible. And trust me, it is only getting worse. And hey, it's not just videos. AI generated photos they're causing havoc too. Imagine waking up to find an account online with your name, your face, and details about your life, but you did not create it. It is happening. People are using AI to create fake accounts with ultra realistic photos of others. And sometimes these accounts are harmless scams or catfishing schemes. But other times, they're far more destructive, just as photos. Profiles. I mean, these fake profiles have been known to post inflammatory or inappropriate content, making the real person appear guilty of something they had no part in. Imagine losing your job or reputation or even personal relationships because of an AI generated lie. The technology is so advanced that proving the photos aren't real can take an expert and by then the damage is already done. And that's the real crime here, how these fake posts can destroy lives without a single shred of truth behind them. At Arizona State University, we've made online education better, smarter, and more personalized so you can go further in your aspiring field. I decided to pursue medicine once I realized that ASU did have the online program for biological sciences. You're still required to learn the same curriculum. Avoid where prohibited by law 18+ terms and conditions apply. Crime many of us don't even consider. And now you're probably wondering, well how do you fight something that can outsmart you and wreck your life without even touching you when you're not even aware of it? Well, the answer might surprise you. AI itself is stepping in to take on AI and that's exactly what I'm going to get into next. Alright, we've talked about the dark side, how AI is being used as a tool for crime. But now let's flip the script because when it comes to fighting back, AI is not just sitting on the sidelines, if you didn't know, imagine this, a city with thousands of surveillance cameras all feeding into a single system. It sounds like something out of a spy movie right, but this is real and it's happening in cities around the world. AI powered tools are processing live data from these cameras, spotting suspicious activity in real time. They're identifying license plates, tracking movements and even recognizing faces. And yes, I know facial recognition is controversial, but when used responsibly, it can lead police to suspects in record time. Take real time crime centers. Have you heard of these? Could be called RTCCs in your town? These centers are using AI to analyze social media posts, 911 calls and even patterns in criminal behavior. And the result? Officers are armed with better information before they even get to the scene. Can you imagine? And it's not just about catching criminals. It's about predicting where criminals might happen. Live analytics driven by AI are helping law enforcement allocate resources more effectively, reducing crime rates in high risk areas. But here's where it really gets interesting. AI is now being used to fact check its own creations. Deep fake detection tools are becoming more advanced, helping investigators identify doctored videos and photos. It's like fighting fire with fire. And honestly, it is about time, isn't it? But now here's the other thing. Just because we are using AI to fight AI, it doesn't mean we have it all figured out. We can't just say, "Oh great, that's done and taken care of." I mean, the line between justice and invasion of privacy, it's thinner than ever. And that's exactly what we're going to get into next. And I mean, why would you care about any of this? Why should you care about all of this? If AI generated crimes sound like something that only happens in headlines, think again. Because the truth is, these tools don't just impact governments or corporations. They can hit you, personally, in ways you might not even see coming. Let's talk about personal security for a minute. Think about how many times in a day you interact online. Every post, every like every photo, it's all data. And guess what? All of that data, it can be used against you. Imagine someone creating a profile that looks just like yours, using your photos, your interests, even your voice. They don't need to hack you, they just need to recreate you. Suddenly, your friends and family are getting messages asking for money, or worse, people are being tricked into thinking you have done something illegal. This is not paranoia. Do not brush this off. This is happening. AI tools are making identity theft easier and more convincing than ever before. Even employers are falling for these scams. They are firing employees based on fabricated content. And here's the kicker. Once your reputation is damaged, cleaning it up is almost impossible. Pay content spreads faster than real explanations. You might never even know what opportunities you've lost, because someone believed a lie out there about you. And really, a lie you may not even know is out there. What keeps me up at night? If AI can be used to steal identities, fake evidence, and manipulate people? Not allowed to have fun, anytime, anywhere. Step 1. Go to ChumbaCasino.com. ChumbaCasino.com. Got it. Step 2. My dad works in B2B marketing. He came by my school for career day and said he was a big row as man, then he told everyone how much he loved calculating his return on ad spend. And who's holding these creators accountable? But let's not just ask the questions, let's explore what is being done and what you can do to protect yourself. We've covered the tools, the tricks, and the damage AI can do. Not all of it, but we're touching base on the bigger picture. But let's take a step back for a moment and ask a bigger question. Because who is responsible for all of this? All of this AI that's happening around all of us. The criminals using AI. The tech companies building it. Maybe the responsibility lies with all of us. We're trusting it all too much. Here's the reality, AI does not create itself. Behind every deep fake, fishing scam or hacked account is a person, sometimes a group deciding to use AI for harm. But should the creators of these tools share any blame? What are your thoughts? Have you thought about it? Some companies often say their AI is just a tool, it's not a weapon. But when a tool can be used to destroy someone's life, doesn't that make its creators at least partially responsible? If it can't be controlled, I mean if someone builds a self-driving car that crashes because of a design flaw, we hold the company accountable. Shouldn't we do the same for AI? Or is that too much to think about? We need to. I mean the problem is, laws have not caught up to everything going on. In most places there's little regulation around AI and that lack of oversight, it's a gold mine for criminals. And here's where it even gets messier. What happens when AI makes a mistake? Real recognition software has falsely identified people as criminals and it has led to wrongful arrests. And deep fakes, imagine being accused of something you did not do because someone decided to create a fake video of you and its evidence. The ethical lines are blurry and the stakes are high until we figure out who is responsible whether it's governments or tech companies or just the users themselves, we're stuck in a game where the rules are being written as we play. And think about this. When we think about true crime, there are a lot of true crime fans out there. Our minds often go to the big stories right, the murders and the robberies and the kidnappings. The kind of cases that keep dateline fans glued to their screens. But let me ask you this. What happens when an entire life is destroyed without a weapon, without a physical altercation? Just through a phone. This is where AI takes crime to a terrifyingly personal level. Imagine waking up to find someone has spread lies about you and they've used convincing AI to do it. They've created fake images, they have written false stories, they've shared them all online and the fallout you lose your job. Your friends question you, no one believes you, your family is devastated. And here's where it gets even darker. What happens when these lies don't just ruin reputations but they escalate into violence? There's a case from a few years back where a man was falsely accused of heinous crimes through a fake social media account. The accusations were so convincing that his community turned against him and he ultimately took his own life. What is the power and the danger of AI when it is in the wrong hands? And let's not forget how misinformation can drive people to commit crimes themselves. We've seen cases where conspiracy theories online have pushed individuals to violent acts. Imagine what could happen if those theories were backed by AI-generated evidence. The scariest part? This is not science fiction, this is happening and it's happening right now. The same technology that lets us create art and write essays or automate tasks can also manipulate the truth and people's lives on a massive scale. We are living in a world where a single post can destroy a life or spark a chain of events that no one can control. And as vulnerable as we are today, imagine how much worse it could all get tomorrow. Looking for excitement? Shumba Casino is here. Play anytime, play anywhere. We know how serious the stakes are. But what can you do about it? Getting safe in the age of AI takes more than just common sense. It takes awareness and action and accountability. Let's start with what you can do as an individual. Your digital footprint is your first line of defense. Think about how much of your life you share online, photos of your kids, updates about your vacation plans, even the food you eat. Each piece of information is a puzzle for someone with malicious intent. Be selective about what you share and who you share it with. Now let's tackle the tools you already use. Most of us have phones, laptops, smart home devices, and countless apps. Take a hard look at the permissions you've granted. Does that app really need to access your camera and your microphone and your location 24/7? Probably not. You probably think it isn't, but have you looked lately? Adjust your settings, limit unnecessary access. And passwords are another big one. And no, this can no longer be your dog's name. Your birth year, none of that is not going to cut it anymore. You need and must have a password manager that will create long and unique passwords for each account, enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. It's one of the simplest ways to add an extra layer of security, but people are bothered. It's too much to deal with. I just don't want to set this stuff up. Now let's talk about spotting those AI-generated scams, because they're everywhere. Deep fakes and AI-powered phishing messages thrive on one big thing, believability. If a message, email, or video seems out of character for someone, trust your instincts immediately and do not change your mind. Call or message this person directly, confirm what's going on. And remember, real institutions, you know, things like banks, government agencies, they are not going to ask you for sensitive information, over a text or even an email. Don't do it. When it comes to deep fakes, look for the tells, AI-generated videos often have these little inconsistencies, you know, like in the matrix, the glitch? These can have those flickering in the background, some unnatural eye movements, things like that, even awkward speech patterns. They are not perfect, and if you can spot these little imperfections, it could save you from falling victim to a scam that could ruin you. But let's also be real. No matter how careful you are, there's only so much you can do on your own. That's why we need systemic change. Governments need to step in with stronger regulations on how AI is developed and used. Think about this, cars have seat belts, airbags, and crash tests to ensure safety. Why don't we hold AI to the same standard? And then there are the tech companies, they've built this technology and they profit from it. This means they should also bear some responsibility for its misuse. We need transparency, clear answers about how our data is being used and what safeguards are in place to prevent abuse. Of course, education, that's another piece of the puzzle. AI literacy, it needs to be a priority. Starting in our schools with the kids and adults, everyone needs to learn how to spot scams, have the confidence to question suspicious content and protect their digital lives. Knowledge is key and the clock is ticking and AI is not slowing down if you think it's quiet out there. Oh, things are happening and if we don't act now, we could risk falling behind. Anybody out there, it's moving quick and the consequences of being too behind or not catching up on how this is all being managed could very well be devastating. And I realize for a lot of people out there, this is really hard to grasp, can't see AI, how can it hurt me? So to truly grasp the gravity of AI's influence in the realm of crime, I'd like to examine some real world cases where this technology has played a pivotal role, sometimes with those devastating outcomes. Let's look at our first case, a deep fake audio that led to financial fraud. In 2019, the CEO of a UK based energy firm received a call from what he believed was his own pairing company's chief executive and that man was instructing him to transfer $220,000 to a Hungarian supplier. It was convincing, utilizing the exact tone and German accent of his superior. However, this was a deep fake, a deep fake audio generated by AI. This all led to a very successful fraud. How about this example? AI generated child exploitation material doesn't sound fun and it's not in 2024, reports emerged of AI being used to create synthetic child exploitation material. These AI generated images and videos depicting non-existent children, complicate law enforcement efforts as traditional investigative methods rely on identifying and rescuing real victims. The existence of such content poses significant ethical and legal challenges. Here's another one a deep fake used in political disinformation. I know we hear about this in the news and at this point we just don't really want to hear about it but it's a real thing. During the 2024 US elections, a deep fake video surfaced depicting a candidate making inflammatory statements. Now this video was widely shared, before it was debunked. Now the debunking? That wasn't shared around, okay? Because before it had been proven fake it had already hit everyone. The entire public with their very strong opinions don't even realize what they saw was not even true. This can affect elections and just this one incident alone underscores the potential of AI generated content to disrupt democratic processes. And that's not good for anyone, I don't care what side you're on. About this real case, AI generated misinformation leading to public panic. Not that long ago guys in 2023, a deep fake video showing a fabricated explosion at the Pentagon went viral on social media. And for many this caused public panic and a brief dip in the stock market even which can be devastating for many. The video was later identified as a deep fake but the damage had already been done. This video highlighted the potential of AI generated misinformation and how it can cause real world chaos. That is a security issue. How about in 2024 when individuals discovered many individuals, discovered AI chatbots that had been impersonating them without consent, these bots engaged in conversations with people that were misrepresenting the individuals they appeared to be leading to personal and professional distress, imagine trying to defend yourself, saying that video is not me. The person watching it is convinced it is you. They don't even believe in AI and realize it's power and they never believe you. You could lose your job. You could lose your significant other over something like this. Depending on what it is, you could even go to prison. If no one believed you and no one did the research and figured out if that video was not real. These cases that I'm sharing with you they are not just stories. These are reminders of the tangible impact AI can have on all of our lives. And as we continue to integrate this technology into our daily routines, which most of us are. Understanding its potential for misuse becomes not just important. It becomes essential. As this episode comes to a close, let's talk about where we go from here. Because here's the thing, AI isn't going anywhere, and if anything it's only going to become more powerful, more accessible, and more ingrained in our lives. In 2025, we're living in a world where technology can create miracles or cause chaos. AI has given us incredible tools, but it's also opened doors for harm we never saw coming. We can't afford to treat AI like any other tech trend. It's not just a shiny new gadget or a cool app. This thing is a force that's shaping how we communicate, how we work, and yes, how crimes are committed and solved, true crime junkies. Every one of us, individuals, companies, governments, has a role to play in making sure this technology is used responsibly. That means pushing for stronger regulations, holding tech creators accountable, and educating ourselves about the risks. And let's not forget the human side of... It is Ryan Seacrest here. There was a recent social media trend, which consisted of flying on a plane with no music, no movies, no entertainment. But a better trend would be going to Chumbagocino.com. This behind every AI driven crime is a victim and a person creating the crime on the other side. Someone who's life, reputation, or safety has been shattered, and for every crime that happens, there's another that could have been prevented if we had taken AI more seriously and believed in its true power because the criminals are. Take note, deep fake attacks in 2024 deep fake attacks occurred every 5 minutes, marking a 244% increase from 2023 and a staggering 1600% surge since 2021. How about financial fraud? In 2024, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network observed an increase in suspicious activity reports from financial institutions describing the suspected use of deep fake media in fraud schemes targeting their institutions and customers. How about cyber crime costs? The global cost of cyber crime reached 8 trillion in 2023, amounting to over $250,000 per second and is projected to rise to 10.5 trillion by 2025 and here we are. How about business vulnerability? In Australia, 20% of businesses were targeted by deep fake scams in the past year, leading to tens of millions of dollars in losses. Doesn't just happen to you guys, doesn't just happen in your country. How about Southeast Asia scams? Cyber criminals in Southeast Asia stole up to $37 billion in 2023 through various illicit activities with AI-driven crimes on the rise. These statistics underscore the escalating threat posed by AI-driven crimes, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and robust countermeasures. So as we move into 2025, let this be a call to action. Whether you're a true crime junkie or just someone trying to keep up with the times, it's in all of us to demand better. Better protections, better accountability, and better understanding of what it is we are dealing with because the truth is, AI does not decide how it's used, people do, and it's time we start making smarter and more responsible choices, I mean, the stakes couldn't be higher.
