Welcome to the table!
In this episode, we're going to be talking about a big splashy healing Jesus did in Jerusalem on the sabbath. This healing of a man at the pools of Bethesda initiated a conversation between Jesus and the religious leaders. My favorite healing in John is coming up in John 9. Jesus does both of these healings at two different pools on the Sabbath. This healiing of this man, who had been suffering in his condition for 38 years, ends sadly with the man not worshipping Jesus but walking away from Jesus to tell the religious leaders that it was Jesus who healed him.
Jesus initiated healing with a man who would walk away. There is nothing to indicate this man had faith. In fact, he was waiting for the pools to bubble. He was hoping for a miracle but he was hoping in a myth about the bubbling pool.
John 5 begins with the healing. The big draw to me is not the big miracle, but the conversation the miracle initiates with the religious leaders. I think Jesus is asking everyone in this chapter, do you want to get well?
