We have to be careful with this episode and part two, which is we're doing Sunday. We got to keep an eye on picked on D because I know as an interview, when you actually meet someone, it's hard to shit on them after the fact you become enamored with them. Oh, hey, who was a good interview like Mike Leach. We love Mike Leach. The reason was Mike Leach was really nice to us. And he was a cool guy. I mean, I liked him before as a coach, but it would be hard to kill Mike Leach because we know Mike Leach. Who is the guy? Who is the guy that you've interviewed that has changed your opinion of them the most in terms of the team or just no, not you. This is a Sean question. Like in terms of a guy you didn't think much of that you were like, yeah, this fucking guy is awesome. Put you on the spot. I got, I got one. Okay. Why don't you go pack man Jones, pack man Jones. He's a great guy because there were some incidents where you could maybe kill him. Isn't the right word considering some of the, you know, night club incident he was tied to, but he, and he's had a bunch of incidents where you're like, this guy's fucking crazy, but we hung out with him for 10 minutes. He did the interview. He was nice to us. So now it's like old pack man's about guy. It was, it was like a surprisingly authentic like he, he was actually trying to do a good job. That was what stood out to me. That he recognized that I was also at Virginia Tech when we were in the, he said we were in the big East together. So basically was on the football team. No, I would say, yeah, then on the other side of the coin, I'd say the, the unreleased interview of Mr. Brandon Lang, maybe one day that would be the other way in terms of like meeting Santa Claus and being very disappointed. Anyway, so, but yeah, to bring you it back to the mountain west, unless Sean has, has him. No, no, I'm trying to think. I mean, yeah, I'm, who was, who is like immediately you are all in defending them. Well, it's more just like you go from, all right, because I would say most of these things you go into it, not hat with the exception of maybe like the times I've spoken to like a giant or someone that I was like a fan of, you mostly go into it hoping that they're going to be willing to have a good conversation. I'll say this, Ryan, Brandon Jacobs was harder to hate after doing our show because, well, one, he gave us a great intro to the show. This is Brandon Jacobs. Fuck the Cowboys immediately. It's a little harder to hear that guy. And he told us the story about trying to break some, like break the stadium in Dallas. Yeah. I broke some lights. I, I just, I loved, he told Shawnee would have played for the league. Like the other team he wanted to play for was the Eagles. I love how much he just loved football. I love what a huge fan. He was of his son. Well, I was going to say Colby, you better be ready to see his son's like a five star left tack, like tackle recruits. So anyway, but yeah, what was that? Which, what was the, the one program team coach player where you were like, man, I got it. I'm, I'm all in on this guy, this girl, I, this guy or girl. I mean, well, I know you're a big fan of the commissioner. Look, Colorado States, Jane Orville recently had Jerry Glanville on, on campus talking to the team. So that, that wins me over. That wins me over from the start. But, uh, look, I would say the one that, because I had talked to Norville the year before, I would say the one though that, that to me just came off super cool that I had not met was Kenny, I'm on to Lolo, but the one that you're going to run through a wall for is Timmy Chang in Hawaii. Oh, really? After talking to Timmy Chang, I was like, I'm not talking to a quarterback. This has got to be a guy that played middle linebacker because like he's very passionate about his team and what's going on. And of course, we had June Jones on earlier in the off season. And he got again, pro close to the program, super biased. I'm sure. But he got, I mean, he got me hype for Hawaii football. He got me in him saying, um, you know, Brayden Schrager was a is an NFL prospect. And this is a guy who has coached a bunch of NFL quarterbacks. He's made that call, uh, definitely made me way more excited about Hawaii this year in Hawaii. You look at him, even Phil Steele has a lot of like, trending up trending in the right direction. This could be that third year where everything clicks for the head coach, the program. Like if I had to describe it, it'd be like Tedford and Calhoun is at the time. Tedford had not retired. They, it's like they've been to this rodeo so many times, right? Timmy Chang and Sean Lewis, which is San Diego State's head coach. Those guys had me like convinced like I'm going to, I didn't want to board a flight right now. Timmy Chang, Timmy Chang interviewing with me. He's like, we're building this there and he keeps doing this. He's like, and we're doing this and you're just like, okay, okay. And he's passionate about it too. He's like, he's like, and I knew when we hired Dennis Thurman, getting him Rex Ryan guy, we're going to be a hard hit and defense. And I'm like, oh man, this is a quarterback talking to me. You know that moment where the guy at the dog park who has the fanny pack full of treats and all the dogs are just standing around wagging the shit out of their tail. That's Colby. All the coaches that have also had a tail wag. He's just like, Oh, yeah, Colby's on one side. I was like, yeah, keep talking, keep fucking talking. Let's go. Let's go. You can see what you had, what it takes. Right? Like that's, that's why, you know, I think both guys, that's why people speak highly because you, if you have energy, it does feel like you're given some credit and benefit of the doubt because when you get in a room with someone if one on one interview with whatever media guy, they're going to probably feel similar to you, right? Because they, you know, unless they completed, you hate college football. It's like, yeah, this is, this is what it's about bringing energy to a college program and actually trying. The other side of that coin is like the establishment that you already have the machine running, but that's like dying off big time. You got to have the energy. I'm a big, as someone who watches, I now watch my kids get coached by like quote unquote professionals. It blows my mind when coaches don't have energy for young people. Like, even up to the college level, it works. Every coach I've ever seen that is great is great because they have energy very rarely do you get to be great having fucking Andy Reid's to me and strike me as a, as an energy guy. Go watch and went younger on the Giants. Like go, he was definitely a little bit more obviously, like Parcells to be had more energy than, than, than, but when they coach, also too, I mean, when they coached together though, they did have some energy on them. That was a fire. I think is a tough read. Like he went out of his way to like promote this like iron face stone jaw. Not going to give you Jack shit in the, in the media. I guarantee we could do a cut up of him as the Giants DC just fucking grabbing people by the face mask and getting, getting into people. So I think he matured into that in fairness. Yeah, which I think also too, I think behind the scenes, it was a different bell check. Of course, everyone that played for him says that, you know, that's, that's how most coaches mature. I mean, the Pete Carroll's are the ones that are more rare where you maintain this energy into your, into your 70s. And I think for the most part, you get your little lady mother fuck the stoic, the guys who were stoic get to be stoic because they win for a long time and they, they eventually realized they don't need the energy anymore because they got kids around them to bring their assistance to bring the energy. I know what bringing it home though, what I thought was great was I asked Troy Calhoun on, you know, last season, he gave me a dud. Yeah. You know, I interviewed Troy Calhoun last year and he's like, you know, the NCAA rule changes. I just don't know how we're going to be any good this year. I know we have a lot of returning starters, but they keep trying to destroy the sport. And I don't know if I can, I don't think we can win any games. And I'm like sitting there like, damn, I had Air Force as a contender, right? And he's at the way after talking to him, I was like, they're going to be horrible this year. No, he was actually great. And that was a great sand bag. Yeah. And there's always normally last year he had a reference to the, what was it? What was like the Geneva Convention? It was like he had some type of reference historical. This year was the, gosh, man, what is it like the guy who invented the light bulb Edison? Yeah. I'm brain dead right now. It's just a funny. Yeah. I mean, you want to kite Benjamin Franklin, maybe? Yeah, if you're guessing, just go Franklin. No, no, I actually know. And I'm like, doesn't that help though? Like that, that would have been, it's like coach, maybe continuity is the greatest advantage in the game now. And he also still, you know, really defends that the NCA is in the wrong with this rule change because you're leading to more head on collisions because you're not blocking low. And it's bad for the state of football. He's adamant about that and that, you know, they need to reverse that rule. I like that. You had a serious, how many coaches did you talk, talk shop about about the triple option? Did you bring up targeting over under targeting? Oh, yeah. They're probably having a conversation at the water cooler be like, that fucking guy won't, well, he won't let it go. He won't let it go with this targeting thing. I don't know the rule change, what more header and injuries. So that's bad, right? That's what they say. Well, legs are bad. Legs are important too. Air force five and three last year. So definitely lied to you. Right. Right in your face. Colby. That's got to hurt nine and nine and four, man. Overall as a team, eight and four in the regular season, nine and four. If you include the the bowl effort, wind total drops to six and a half this year, minus one 35 to the over plus one 10 to the under 13 to one to win the conference. So put some right on the outside. Like they're, they're outside of that like contender bubble of three teams, 60 to one to make the playoff and 1000 to one to win the college football championship. You know, I do think with, you know, as I was plugging in some of this data and looking at schedules, it seemed evident that you, you know, you, there were some teams that you just missed all the good teams and air force schedule. They have, they have a, you know, some non con stuff we should talk about, but other than that, I don't hate this situation. And I guess it depends how you how much you like the army navy situation this year. But, you know, we, we gave you the, the teaser of like be careful. Colby's going to be high on a lot of these teams because he's had some face time. They, you know, had some flesh touching other flesh. Well, they're scheduling. I think it's pretty doable. Although they only have six starters returning and, but air force has kind of been pretty consistent 40 and 12 the last four seasons. Like the ceiling isn't super high for this program, but I think they have a decent floor. And then Colby was telling me the guy who does a play by play for air force he has on the team preview every year. He's been taking the over on air force. And you said this year he actually took the under, which was surprising to me makes a little concerning. Yeah. And, and you know, why, why was he doing that? Well, normally they have more return. Well, he's in practice. And he says like, you know, I will say this triple option teams, it's about your rhythm. Yeah. You need to find that rhythm. He said there, you know, in his opinion, they're not there yet. And I kind of got that feeling from Calhoun again, but once again, sand man, you know, this is a guy that won nine games last year and the previous three, 10, 10 win seasons that, you know, so if you throw out the COVID year or they couldn't block, this is a one, what 39 games in the past four seasons. Yeah. It's crazy. Did you ask? I mean, he didn't stop tackling. But he, he, the air force was okay with tackling. No, there's something ironic. They had problems too with that shit, man. But, but I mean, breaking in a new quarterback too. And John Boucher. That's great. Great name. Yeah. Great name. But he, and here's another thing. He's more of a passing option quarterback than previously. So when are you talking four or five passes again? I don't know. He told me, but I will say this. I did say, Hey, you got six starters returning, Troy, correct me and said five. Really? He said five, but that's what he likes to do. He's saying back. Yeah. Keep the expectations low. And then he knows you. He's a great fucking coach though, man. And as much as, as much as I want to say, like, I'm weary of the beat writer, but just look at this 17 years at air force, 130 wins, 82 losses. Like the, yeah, he's just really consistent every once in a while. Yeah, there'll be a done year, but you got to go back to 2018, five and seven, 2017, five and seven. But man, for the most part, pretty consistent air force is 134 out of 134 and returning production. Yeah. That's bad. And that's where it gets scary. But also too, like as air force has it ever been about like the guys on the field, like no, it's about the program. It's about the coaching. Yeah, that newity helps. But I, and sure, looking at what they start out with, Mary Mac warriors, are they going to win that game? Yes. Now at home against San Jose state, I think that's a 50 50 game. That's a tough game. But the fact that they're in Colorado Springs at elevation, of course, not as high as I was Wyoming, a good spot for them. And then at Baylor, you know, he beat Baylor in a bowl game about two years ago. So a lot of guys on that Baylor team probably won't revenge there. I think you got to remember. Yeah, I do. They historically struggle in Laramie. So that's a little tough. But I will say right here, this is their stretch. They've had the upper hand on Navy of late. They could beat Bronco Mendenhall into Mexico is in year one. And they've definitely owned Colorado state. Now Colorado state, I'm kind of bullish on this year, but historically, I think one, he's like 14 and two or something against Colorado state. Look at them at home in the Troy, Calhoun era, 76 and 25 at home straight up like, so all right, they do have a bunch of road games. But if they win their home games, maybe they split Fresno state and Oregon state. If you want to be conservative, so it's five wins. And they win. Can they, where are they getting road wins? Where are they getting Nevada, New Mexico, maybe two, they might be able to beat San Diego state. So you feel good about them getting two road wins. One's going to be army. Wait, the win total is at six and a half, six and a half. Yeah, they're getting seven wins. I'm sorry. Aim. Hi, baby. What are you? What's happening, Colby? Look, I did the preview. I took the over. So it's like you have a unique thing. These guys like a lot of new coaches in this league, a lot of them probably not very familiar with triple option schools. So you do have that in your bag. I just, I had a real, it'd be pretty easy for the government to, I see a bills mafia deja 92 in the chat referring to the idea that maybe we could get a little NIL money from the government. I mean, we're put, there's money leaking all over the world right now from this government. Why not spend a little on the old NIL to the air force? Maybe get a couple key, key late transfers here bolster that returning production. We should be fading this team just for the record, but we're all going to take the over. Yeah. I'm not going to, it wasn't, you're taking an over. It wasn't, it wasn't worth having friction with Colby noted lover of Troy Calhoun and you noted lover of fly boys. Let's go. Boys, the state six and two in conference six and six overall. That's not very good. The blue turf is still annoying. Nine and a half the wind total this year. They are the chalk in the conference a plus one 10 to the over minus one 30 to the under plus one 10 to win the conference. So basically they're saying, you know, just stopping right there. What do you like better Colby over nine and a half wins or win the conference? Cause it's the same price. I'd still take the nine and a half. Yeah. Oh, I think you can go 10 and two and not win the call. So say like Fresno to me, the news with Tedford makes me think a little longer about it, but oh, I think 100% a team can go 10 and two in this conference and not win the conference. So to be able to get the over at plus one 10 versus win the car. Like did you think someone can win the conference at nine and three? Maybe I guess potentially. I mean, we have so many new coaches now with the two recent ones. This whole conference is new coaches plus 490 to make the playoff. That's the, the juiciest number we'll talk about in this conference and 500 to one to win the national championship. Yeah. I don't think that's happening for four ninety for the playoff for Boise state. Seems a little rich. Are they like, what's the, what's the hype all about Colby? Five star Malachi Nelson transfers out of USC. I do like their, they are getting a, they have all their starters back on defense. Yeah. It might be one of those bitches who doesn't have his teammates at his birthday party. Really? I mean, Colby's deeper than I am, but I did see some stuff about him. Well, obviously redemption shit. Like he's a five star. He's, but in terms of he has regressed as a prospect. Like he's not the prospect. He was when he came out of high school was going to be the next time in Canada, next system, based that off of him transferring to Boise, right? No, this is before he, I honestly, I read about this before he even went to Boise as, as basically like it was a comparison between him and someone else, some other prospect from that same class and kind of stock up, stock down kind of situation. And you know, him having to go to Boise kind of accurate than his stock is down. That was the best option. I heard they put together a quite nice and I, okay. So maybe, maybe it was the best option for him, but still, if you're a five star guy and Boise's the best option, I'm guessing he's not from Idaho. Big potato guy. I thought he was crazy. Boise State. That's what I'm saying. It's, it's not his first choice. So he's, he's down. Boise State. I know when the college football video game released there, like top 10 places to play at home. I don't think Boise State was up there, but why not? Last 20 since 2003, a hundred, they've only lost 15 games since in the past 20 years last five years. So since what 20, they were very elite for a while there. Like that, that first 10 years of the range you just gave us, they might have only lost one game. Since 2018, they're still 27 and not 75% at home. So to your point, yeah, not as they're not in the mix for, you know, national championship or when they, what was their peak, the fiesta bowl, the guy proposing after the game, after winning with the statue. I mean, that was probably like their hilarious, but you remember where you were when you watched that. That was like a moment. There, there are not many moments in Johnson's name of the last 20 years or 25 years in college football where everyone remembers watching that game. I'll tell you this. I wanted to kind of fade them and fade the hype, but Oh, 100% but 10 and two kind of feels doable here. The, the, I think the sneaky spot that they're going to lose is the back-to-back road spot at Wyoming Saturday, November 23rd. It's a back-to-back road spot. I think they could lose that. That is a big one there. But, you know, I, we, this guy's never started a game, but he's, he's highly touted. They're running back. Ashton Gente is a fucking stud. You can actually argue that he might be the best running back in the nation. They're at Oregon. They play week two that they have an interesting schedule at Georgia Southern at Oregon week two, then they have a bye. Then they have Portland State at home, Washington State at home, Utah State at home at Hawaii, which should look out that. I mean, they have a bye and then another at UNLV. All right. Fine. San Diego State at home Nevada at home at San Jose State at Wyoming, Oregon State at home. Three losses feels possible here. It's still though, like, but you still need them. They're laying 10 points against Georgia, Georgia Southern that first week. Fresno is not on the schedule, which normally gives them trouble. And the team that really gives them trouble has been Air Force and they're not on the schedule either. I think you got to lean over here because I just don't like there's so many. I know Spencer Damiss is a new coach, but he was actually coach. He coached four games last year and he was with the program. I think there's a little bit of a leg up on that. And where, where are the losses, man? They get it on nice schedule like that. You know, I'll tell you right now. How do you get the three losses? I don't tell you right now. I'm listening. Well, Hey, they get Washington state and Oregon state. Okay. So maybe losing one, but they're a surf turf though. That's fine. I'm just saying they're catching both both of the pack two teams. I do think the opening two games are tricky that that opening game. Are you kid Sean? We're taking Georgia Southern as a 10 point dog week. We just write it down right now. I do think that is a little. And Sean, when you watch this kid play quarterback you're going to be so out on him. He's not a cold weather guy. I'm out on this. And you see, he just said it at media day, that was this thing, him and Tory Horton, their star wide out, were offered like, I think 600 grand, he quoted from Kansas state and a few other schools, and they turned them down to stay at Colorado state. I like how people are just airing all that out. Yeah. But the big thing to me is the schedule here. Like they historically Boise has owned them. Boise's not on the schedule. Yeah. You look at all the other spots. The game that I had circled was the Fresno game. That got a little easier with the Tedford news. No, they still might lose that. But I just think it's a really nice schedule. Like they, they, okay, at Air Force, they traditionally lose that game. But you know, the rest of their hard games, there's not many of them. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, I'm with you. I think they certainly have some loseable road games, but yeah, the home games are all, you know, very nice. Yeah. And I think that's why you got to take the over here. I think, and I actually believe like there's value in them to play for the conference championship. Two overs. I mean, if they went nine and three, would you be shocked? No, I don't think so. And that's why I think why Phil Steele is highlighting like only three mountain west road games because their conference schedule could be pretty damn good. Well, think about what conference, what you want on the schedule if you're a mountain west team. Yeah, they're, they're road game at Nevada. Nevada's a train wreck. Yeah. Utah State just lost their coach. New Mexico, San Jose State. They're all on the schedule. So you got to like it. Wyoming at home. Yeah. You don't have the only team there. They're tied for first in conference returning production. I like this. I think Colorado state to Colby's point them. We'll see. I like playing that. You, like you're, you're playing the chaos idea that they can, maybe they lose two games out of conference. Only one in conference gets them in the championship game. You're sitting on a 15 to one ticket. We have to, has the mountain west announced what their tiebreaker procedures are? Well, they only have 12 teams. Well, hold on. That was chaotic last season. Actually, last season, they added teams, which increases the odds. There's going to be a tie up top. Why are we the only outlet that is mentioning these conference prices are fucking bonkers because one of these teams, these longer shot teams are going to fuck up a big conference because they have a softer side of the schedule. They're actually a great example, the mountain west, because they had, they did have 12 teams last year. Yes. Correct. All right. So they had, they, 12 teams, they still had a problem. These other conferences have like 18. Yeah. Yeah. But, and so last season, they used the, I think it was the strength. They used the record of, of the opponents, even though San Jose state of just what they ignored, they head to head, which was shocking to me because San Jose state beat the shit out of, of you and all the in Vegas. It is very complex. It can get complicated to break ties with multiple teams if they haven't all played each other. And it always is, it looks so stupid when you pick a team that just got their ass beat. Yeah. The week before literally the week before, come on guys, can we, can we, this is where like maybe the eye test helps a little bit. I think I'm on the over too. Yeah. I think it's a really good over. That's fresh Colby minus one 50 to the over plus one 20 to the under plus three 60 to win the conference. 20 to one to make the playoff and 100 to one, or we're sorry, one thousand and one to win the national championship. Colby, you were high on this team and then there were my preseason favorite, some news broke. I still think, you know, you should be bullish on this team because Tedford's coaching tree is normally so damn good that the guys are probably very well qualified to do what he was planning on coaching. Yes. So that's tough. But I'll tell you what's not tough. Last year was the year to catch Fresno because they lost a ton of production. Yeah. Mikey Keene comes in and he did good, but now it's year two in Tedford's offense, which I think normally quarterbacks in year two, going back to Aaron Rogers or a Kelly Smith or Joey Harrington, like they have monster years, the year after. So that is, is something. And I also think Malik Sharad, the running back, they figured him out. He's a stud. Their receiving court is really good. They returned their entire offensive line. The defense, uh, they go out and get a couple of USC transfers. One that was, was a five star. So I do think this team is like just, I'm leaning, I'm leaning under one because of losing Tedford. And then two, they did have some regression signs. They were minus 76 yards per game in conference and they had a plus nine turnover differential. So you're saying they should have been 500. No, but I'm saying like the difference between a eight and four and seven and five could be a couple turnovers in the game. And the juice suggests like at minus one 50, I don't know, man, I think losing Tedford, who is a good coach, I'll take the under of Fresno state. The, but the main thing is the schedule, man, the schedule, like, I think they're favored in every single game, not, not named Michigan. So the, yeah, the minus one 50 makes it like 7.9. I mean, certainly it's, it's still eight to win. It doesn't change a ton. Fresno is actually catching 20 and a half against Michigan. That's a fun upset spot. It lost, it lost a little luster though, dude. I mean, so, but if you liked, are they making any big changes in the coaching staff? No, we don't know that. The coaching staff has been together for years. So then maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe it doesn't matter. The schedule is fucking beautiful though, man. Like it's a good sketch. To me, Tedford is enough to take this team from maybe a nine and three to a seven and five. It's his system, potentially. Yeah. But I don't know. So he's that the roster's a little more familiar, in my opinion, than traditionally coming in. So I like, I don't think it's going to be easy, but I think I lean over here just because I think Mendenhall will Jason back the offensive coordinator will fight away to get that thing. He's the guy that converted Brandon Armstrong from safety to quarterback and put up monster numbers at UVA. I think they'll find someone and they'll be just good enough. Give me the win against Montana State. Give me the win against New Mexico State. And they'll upset somebody. Maybe it's Utah State. You know, he's got it. Now let me down for Colorado State conference to 15. All right. Colby, what are you doing? Let's lock up that Nevada under two and a half. Then Fresno over seven and a half. And I will then go Colorado State over six and a half. I almost did the Colorado State. Well, he had a future. Let's take Colorado State to win the mountain west. Was that plus 1500? Yeah. Also, give me a little bit of Fresno to make the playoff. Let's go. And that is 20 to one. Yeah. Let's get it. So that's. Is that real? What? I'm just saying. You think that you think there's, there's, there's value and then there's the, are they actually going to let them in? Well, it's true. I'm sure there are going to be odds. If they have, if they give Michigan a scare, they could. What group of five conference you think gets the bid? That'd be a good future for someone to put up. Well, it's weird. I think like Memphis and the AACs have got a great shot at it. I do think it's going to come from one of the shittier conferences. Liberty. You think Liberty? Liberty is a good. That's probably the Appalachian state in the Sunbelt. Sunbelt Toledo in the Mac. Well, I think it's one of those things. Like the metrics will probably say, Hey, these are similar conferences. Like, but the disparity, like the Mountain West does seem to have a little bit more of that big 12. You know, a lot of teams can beat a lot of other teams. The mountains is to me, like with all those teams, even the two bad teams, it's way better conference than any other conference in the, in the group of two. It's all, I mean, not, I would also say it's one of the more interesting, like set of road spot. Everything about the Mountain West is interesting. I like it's my favorite conference. I would say that. So the, if the Hokies, when the ACC falls apart, if they extend, that would be awesome. I mean, of course, Blacksburg, not far from mountains. You know that Colby, but no, I, yeah, 100%. I mean, think about all the Jersey combinations and all like some of the locations they go to. It's a great. And they play late night on the West coast.
