Day one of the Republican Convention in Milwaukee starts today. We'll run today tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday. And we will carry coverage and have it for you, starting at seven o'clock tonight. Right here on this radio station. John Decker, our White House correspondent joining us now from Milwaukee. He's there at the convention. John, welcome and thanks for being here. Thank you, JT. Thanks for having me on today. Absolutely. First of all, your reaction. Where were you when you saw and heard about what happened with Donald Trump Saturday afternoon? Well, I arrived on Friday afternoon here in Milwaukee. So I learned the news just while outside the convention center here in Milwaukee shocked like everybody else. And then like everybody else in America glued to the news to make certain that the former president Trump was okay. Initially, you know, really concerned when you saw those still photos, which indicated that he had been in some fashion, but so fortunate in terms of the outcome. Obviously, so sad, you know, that there was a fatality here, two injuries, and now questions will be asked about how this could have happened in the first place. You know, how the Secret Service was, you know, essentially not on the job to allow this would be assassin from being able to take out those shots. Now, you mentioned the victim, Cory Comatore, he's from Pennsylvania, their former firefighter, 50 years old family guy. And basically, I think he did save his wife and daughter from the gun fires. He immediately covered them and he took the bullet and unfortunately passed away. I can't say enough about this hero from Pennsylvania that did exactly what, you know, a loving father and husband would do in protecting their family. And he paid the ultimate price for it. There's a couple of other victims you mentioned. David Dutch, who was 57 and a third victim, James Coppenhaver, who's 74 of both of those guys, you know, being from Pennsylvania are in stable condition as of yesterday. So one fatality in the crowd and Donald Trump talked to me about what you thought of Trump's resilience in getting up in this fist pumping and blood coming down his face. And, you know, how he just was still concerned about the crowd and getting his message moving forward for this country in the right direction. Well, the image that you're describing is an iconic image. You know, my good friend from AP Evan Vucci is a photographer who snapped that photo that you're referring to. And, you know, look, I've already seen that image right here in Milwaukee, you know, in terms of delegates having it on a poster or having it on a t-shirt. It's that type of image that really resonates with the people that are here at this convention. Which gets under way tonight. And I think the tone for this convention will be a little bit different than what would have been taking place had that assassination attempt not taken place on Saturday. We hear this from the former president that he's changed the tone of his acceptance speech when he accepts the nomination as a Republican nominee on Thursday night. And we heard it from president Biden last night lowering the political temperature, lowering the political rhetoric. You know, I don't know how long it's going to last JT, but you know, we'll take it. You know, I mean, it's a divided country, but we'll take it. Yeah, it's certainly on pause right now. I saw, I think it was Congressman from Tennessee said, yeah, it's on pause for sure now, the rhetoric. But let's talk about it a week after the convention as to, you know, the left and the Democrats. And, you know, the aggressive rhetoric that they've been having for quite some time towards this president, I was just mentioning it's odd the DOJ is doing the super investigation as to what took place, how it took place, why this guy got to the roof. And on the other side of the, you know, hallway, the DOJ is also doing an investigation on how to put Donald Trump in jail, you know, it's just a weird, crazy scenario that we've got going on in this country. I also heard that Trump is not only going to, you know, be there Thursday and it obviously for the culmination of the convention, but he is there now and is expected to show up today at the convention and speak anywhere on that? I don't know if he's going to speak today. You know, I think that what is typical is what I've seen in previous conventions, I've covered a lot of these JT would not be surprised at all if we see an appearance by the former president. But I think he's going to wait until Thursday to make some, you know, meaningful remarks, you know, nothing, you know, extensive even if he makes remarks today, you know, welcome to Milwaukee is going to save, you know, his speech until Thursday night and keep the anticipation going. All right, John, well, be safe there and we'll talk throughout the week. I appreciate your update this morning, John Decker in Milwaukee. Thank you, John. Thank you.
