It is incredibly hot out there, and of course, that heat is not good for you physically, but it turns out it's also just as bad for you mentally. Joining me right now is Dr. Vince Callahan, who says that he has three decades of experience in both private and public practice. And Dr. Callahan, what kind of mental impact can this weather have? Well, what happens if it's a subtle thing? We have an alarm system in our brain that is triggered for survival, and it's called fight-flight or freeze, and so when we're in the heat, we actually get that same fight-flight or freeze phenomenon happening where our brain goes, "Okay, danger, danger," and it creates cortisol, and it goes into survival mode and all those kinds of things. Heart rate goes up, sugar levels go up, blood pressure, everything, and so that is one of the mental health issues that happens, and it creates irritable moods, especially if we get into fight mode, if that's our normal system, then everybody's an enemy, and everything's bad for us, and everybody's coming to get us, so we're going to fight our way out of the situation. And then also, medications, a lot of medications don't interact well with the heat, so you've got mental health meds that when you're out in the heat, it's almost like you're not even taking those meds, which can prove very problematic because if you need those meds to maintain your good mental health step, then you're not even, it's like you're not even taking it. And Dr. Callahan, I've seen studies where during the summertime, road rage is much higher because people are already angry behind the wheel of the car, so that can have an impact on your health as well. Absolutely, and that goes back to the fight-flight or freeze. If your fallback position is fight, and now you're driving, and it's hot, and if your air conditioning isn't working in your car right, now you're irritable, and you're in that fight-survival mode, so now we get road rage, and we get a lot of stress going on, and it's just an accident waiting to happen. Dr. Callahan, thank you so much for joining us. 5280 exteriors James Hardy-Siding is a low-maintenance sighting made primarily of cement that resist flame spread and repels woodborne insects and woodpeckers.
