Jay Ratliff flies in to talk stocks and planes

First of all, welcome into our holiday weekend. I hope you have a great weekend with Sherry and you guys have a blast, but I'm, I'm getting asked a lot of people, Hey, look, and we're trying to figure this out. What do you, what's your expert telling us on interest interest rates? Are we, is it over? We're done for the year. Do you think we'll see another one? What do you think? I, I think there's an increasing likelihood we could see an interest rate cut in September. That's kind of the way we're leaning right now. We may see one. I'm hoping for two. Now you've got people out there already saying that we're going to have at least three and I'm thinking, I don't know what your calendar shows, but we're running at a real estate here. And if we can get one, I'll be very happy. And we had some inflation numbers come out last week that indicated that we are trimming in the right direction, not nearly as fast as the Fed would like. So we've got the jobs report on Friday. We'll see how that goes and we'll see additional data between now and in September to see if the rest of the summer confirms that we're headed in the right direction, but it's too early to do a Snoopy dancing that we're going to multiple interest rate cuts this year. I just, at this point, I don't see that happening. And to clarify and confirm once again, Jerome Powell doesn't give two rips about who's in the White House, right? He's not partisan. He's not going to, he's not going to throw Joe Biden a bone and drop a rate right before election day and going, Oh, look, I guess Joe's got the economy moving in the right direction. He has had the opportunity before to do such a thing and he has refused to do so because they have, they've got their data in front of him now. He does it in September. He's going to be accused of it, but it's not consistent with his, uh, his approach over the last many years. And I don't see it happening now. All right. I know you spent years in the airline industry. And I'm sure you saw the story about Southwest and I got to get your thoughts on this. There apparently is now an investigation going on as to why the Southwest Airlines flight took off from a closed runway. I mean, with vehicles in its path, what happened here? Well, there's a thing called a notum. We used to call him notice to air, uh, notice to airman. We can't call him that anymore because it has the dreaded word men in it. No longer appropriate. So it's called notice to air emissions. And it said that at this Portland main airport that this specific runway was closed. Well, Southwest Airlines is departing at 543 in the morning and they're taxiing out, they get on this runway that is closed for some reason. They did not see the notum indicating that that runway was closed. Do not use it. Now the air traffic control tower doesn't open up until 545 now flight operations can happen before and after the air traffic control tower is open. We've got procedures for it, but this airplane takes off JT and they had, uh, equipment on the end of the runway and fortunately, they hit the rotation point where they pulled up and they, you know, took off and there was no problem at all, but it could have been a major, major situation, uh, had any of that ground equipment been at a point further up the runway where they might have impacted it. So this is the third Southwest Airlines incident we've had where one, they were on a super low approach at 500 feet when they were about nine miles out of the Omaha airport. They were supposed to be a 3000 feet air traffic control had to tell them to get their altitude up and fast with a flight coming out of Honolulu a few weeks ago that took off hit a thousand feet, started to drop towards a Pacific ocean. They pulled up at 400 feet and then went back in Honolulu and landed. I don't know if all of these are pilot air. If it's some mechanical combination of both, but it is a scary situation. And for Southwest, it continues. It's like they're competing with Boeing to see who can get the most bad headlines in a week. Wow. And with more travelers now with a holiday here, that can't risk too easy with a lot of people. But you mentioned something interesting to me that planes can actually take off before the towers even open. Oh, yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of our airports around the country that aren't staffed 24/7. So they have frequencies where pilots communicate, what their intentions are. And they're able to take off and land successfully. Now, obviously that doesn't happen at the airports that are around us, you know, or anything like in Atlanta or anything like that. But some of these smaller regional airports, that happens quite a bit. Right. And it happens every day without any problem at all. And this wouldn't have been a problem. Had the pilots been aware of the notice that they were provided. But for some, for some reason, just failed to check or to adhere to. Well, that could have been ugly. Well, Jay, have a great weekend.
