Welcome to June 28th on the National Day Calendar. Today we're recalling a legendary figure and celebrating a rich culinary tradition. Albanian Day honors the larger-than-life lumberjack from American folklore. Albanian, with his great strength and his faithful companion, Babe the Blue Ox, is set to have created the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe and formed the Great Lakes to water bait. Although Albanian stories are rooted in the tall tales of logging camps in the late 1800s, they continue to be a beloved part of American culture. So let's reminisce on these tall tales and appreciate the rich tradition of American folklore. I used to love the Paul Bunyan story. Me too actually. And I thought he was real at one point. I did too. I think most young children think Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox are real. And I thought the Blue Ox, like I'm like, "How can knocks be blue?" So I thought maybe he was just gray and they thought he was blue. And if you go into Minnesota, Upper Minnesota, there are towns that have big statues of Babe the Blue Ox and Paul Bunyan, it's so cool. Really? Yeah, speaking of road trips, we should do that sometime. That actually sounds really cool. From the wild tales of Paul Bunyan, we switch to the savory and soulful celebration of soul food. Soul food, with its roots in the African-American community, is a hearty, flavorful cuisine born from necessity and innovation. Staples like collard greens, black eyed peas, cornbread, candy yams and fried chicken have rich cultural significance. This month, we honor not only the delicious dishes, but also the history, the community and the comfort that soul food represents. Candy yams, born from necessity, really? Yes, and deliciousness, it's innovation, and let me tell you. I believe you. I'm just kidding. I'm going to cook a traditional soul food meal for you today and we're going to watch the movie Soul Food while we eat it. This sounds like the start of a new tradition. It's going to be great. I'm Latoya Johnson. I'm Marlo Anderson. Thank you for joining us on our journey to celebrate every day. And join us on Instagram and Facebook at Destination Celebration Show. Until next time, keep celebrating. I'm certainly glad to have Destination Celebration, part of our Rockingham County Today newscast. It's available seven days a week. So yes, you can hear that on Saturday and Sunday as well. And speaking of celebrating, time for the birthday club, wrapping up the week and our giveaway. Now some big name birthdays, Mel Brooks 98, Elon Musk 53, Kathy Babes 76, Kelly Pickler 38, John Elway 64, Mike Lindell 63. In our music spotlight today we remember Little Eva. She was born June 29th, 1943, a North Carolina native born and raised and buried in our state who had one of the biggest number one hits in the early 60s. That would be the locomotion. She was discovered by Carol King. Carol Eva, a real name, Eva Boyd was a babysitter for Carol King's daughter and Carol King is actually doing backup vocals on the record, locomotion. And I'm going to do something I've never done live here in the program. I'm going to be playing the song here from the record. So this could be a little tricky, got to hit the exact groove here, hang on, I can't see the groove. Okay, hang on, bear with me, I should have figured this out another way, oh my minute, I'm so sorry. Okay, wow, this is embarrassing, I've practiced this all morning. Okay, well that was the end of Duke of Earl, okay, that's as close as I can get, it really worked well about 15 or 20 times, here we go.
