My core media, the first place to hear Rockingham County News and Information. News is sponsored by Lane's Family, Pharmacy and Home Healthcare. Funeral services for Rockingham County historian Bob Carter are tomorrow at First Baptist Church in Readsville at 2, with visitation this evening at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 6 until 8. He was everyone's go-to person if we wanted to know anything about our county and calmly shared his years of knowledge. Bob was voted most intelligent when he graduated from Wentworth High School in 1956. His passion was local history, traveling the county, listening to people's stories, researching property and families. He was instrumental in founding the Mark Museum on Archives of Rockingham County, was editor of the Historical Journal, editor of the Heritage of Rockingham County, and contributed to the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography, recognized across the United States. He served on the board of the Eden Historical Museum, Wentworth Preservation Committee, Mayo River State Park Advisory Committee, Naturalist Club, and Sons of the American Revolution. Survivors include wife Diana, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, and son Tom. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bob Carter Fund, created for gathering, preserving, and cataloging his vast historical collection for the mark. Trag Travis, who was a Rockingham County Commissioner from 2011 until 2022, and lost in the 2024 Republican primary, filed a lawsuit this week against two current commissioners, Kevin Berger and Mark Richardson. Others were also named, claiming the defendants sought to discredit him by publishing false statements to voters in mailings on social media, emails, and other communications, all steaming from his opposition to a proposed casino project. Trag Travis says the accusations contributed to the loss of the election and his good reputation. Now news from around our state. The man caught distributing counterfeit fentanyl pills in the Wilmington area was sentenced this week to 16 years in prison. Timothy Blackbin, 29, was going to California and mailing them back to North Carolina. More than 11,000 counterfeit pills and about $100,000 in cash was found at his home. The theater guild of Rockingham County presents Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma at Rockingham County High School. This evening at 730 Sunday, Matt Nay at 230. I was at last night's opening performance and, as always, so impressed with our local community theater. Yes, a number of stand-out actors, but a very talented ensemble of singers and dancers. I counted more than 35 on stage one time. Lots of great choreography and, of course, an award-winning music. The stage at Rockingham County High School is really wide, and the cornfield backdrop was as realistic as it gets. Sets on either side, great lighting, costumes, set designs, it all comes together for a great show. Looked for my review on Facebook, Mike Moore Media, available this morning. International Yoga Day celebrates the physical, mental, and spiritual practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Yoga involves a series of postures and breathing exercises aimed to promoting flexibility, strength, and mindfulness. Today, yoga is practiced worldwide, offering benefits such as stress reduction and improved wellness. So, let's roll out our yoga mats and embrace the serenity and balance offered by this ancient practice. I still want to know where the goats are. How did that even become a thing? It's a yogi thing you wouldn't understand. You truly believe that anybody understands goat yoga. You got to try it. You got to try it first. All right, you're right about that. From the peacefulness of yoga, we switch gears to a product of modern technology. It's "selfy day." The advent of smartphones with front-facing cameras has made self-portraits easier than ever, leading to the selfie phenomenon. While the first recording selfie dates back to 1839, the term "selfy" only entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013. So, whether you're capturing a memorable moment or just feeling particularly good, let's celebrate the selfie and the instant personal connections it allows us to make. Oh, no, I'll take the photograph. You see, it's type of a self-photograph. I can take it and I will be in it also. You know what, I find to take the most attractive photographs. You need to purse your lips together like a duck-billed platypus. Say cheese. Cheese! So, how long do you think Robert Cornelius had to stand in front of the camera for the first selfie ever in 1839? I was just about to say, can we talk about 1839? 'Cause I didn't even know that was a thing. Was it like he had the little thing that you push and he just stood there? No, there was none of that going on at all at that time. You just stood in front of the camera for 10 minutes. That is so horrible. I mean, trying to get the right selfie with you. I technically stand in front of the camera for 10 minutes. He's not even smiling. He's just sitting there with a frown on his face, so... That sounds like you. I'm a talking Johnson. I'm Marlo Anderson. Thank you for joining us on our journey to celebrate every day. Get on over to Facebook and Instagram to follow us about all of our journeys. Until next time, keep celebrating. I can probably count my selfies on two hands, but my lovely granddaughters certainly make up for them. Yes, young people today always taking selfies. Now, the birthday club to finish up the week. I have names for Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd. Today, Tammy Alvarez. Tomorrow, Scott Weinberry. Happy birthday to you. Tammy Alvarez and Scott Weinberry. That's all I have to finish the week. But I do have a pretty good week's worth going back to Sunday the 16th. So I've got 16 through 22nd. I'm shuffling them up for our winner of the week. And it is Tammy Alvarez. Oh, that's today. Well, congratulations, Tammy. Let me know who's celebrating birthdays for the rest of the month. The 23rd through 30th and all of July. Text him to me at 336-932-1881. Get in on the birthday club. Some big-name birthdays. Scotty Scheffler. 28. Juliette Lewis. 51. Michael Gross. Meredith Baxter. 77. Prince William. 42. What other prints is celebrating today? In our music spotlight, all this week, I've been playing songs by some of my favorite people. Today, my favorite amphibian. Why are there so many songs about rainbows? And what's on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions. And rainbows have nothing to hide. So we've been told and some choose to be remembered. I know their own way and see. Someday we'll find it. The rainbow connection. The lovers. The dreamers and me. Who said that every wish would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star? Somebody who thought of that and someone who believed it. But what it's done so far. What's all amazing that keeps the star gazing? And what do we think we might see? Someday we'll find it. The rainbow connection. The lovers. The dreamers and me. All of us are under its spell. We know that it's probably magic. Can you bend and breathe? And have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name. Is this a sweet sound? That only yawns there. The voice might be one and the same. I've heard it too many times to ignore it. It's something that I'm supposed to be. Someday we'll find it. The rainbow connection. The lovers. The dreamers and me. All of us are under its spell. All of us are under its spell. I love that Kermit the Frog song. But here's something a little more lively. Oh, there's no fire in the fireplace. There's no Kermit on the floor. Don't try to order dinner. There's no kitchen anymore. But if the roving gun above me and you need the rest of the spell, well, welcome home to Happy Desert Hotel. Hey, how are you guys fixing to pay? What are our choices? A, credit card, B, K, C, sneak out in the middle of the night. We'll take a seat. Very popular choice. If you've got luggage, keep it handy. But you're running out of luck, cause the help seem to organize and the elevator's stuck. Still if you don't find friendly animals and can learn to stand the smell, well, welcome home to Happy Desert Hotel. Welcome home, welcome home, welcome home. No matter where you wander, you won't ever do as well. Oh, kid, a lot is nothing shared here. It's got the wrong events. And all that thing has been pinned down by marathon express. Still the man is with his cheerful load. Still though the whole time got to hell. Oh, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't. You guys live here? Yeah, but only between gigs, is that me? Then here this time, what, five years? Yeah, but like, okay, you know, are each new, like you said they mean, like things are really gonna break, cause they need to get our new clothes. What's wrong with the drummer? He looks a little crazy. Oh, he's just upset about this and the more nags of the National Gallery. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Oh, there are bugs, and there are lies. Sure we have our little problems, but you'll never repeat the price. You got every kind of credit. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Okay, that's a pretty good dose of Muppets for the week. And that's our program for the week. Here's our motivational moment. Thanks to Livingstone Wealth Management, Raymond James in Madison. Award for the day, balance. Never let success go to your head and never let failure go to your heart. Thank you, friends, for listening. I appreciate that, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Be sure to count your blessings. [BLANK_AUDIO]
